[00:10] Hello [00:12] hi [00:13] How big of a HDD partition is good enough for xubuntu? [00:13] others may happen along later. its best to state the issue and wait [00:13] 8GB is the smallest i'd go [00:13] you can do 6 [00:13] I am trying to partition my 80GB HDD into three sections. [00:14] for? [00:14] One for that nasty MegaSatan stuff. One is for FreeDOS (So I can program some old radios). The last is for Xubuntu [00:14] however you need the space you'll be good [00:14] win7/8 needs at least 20gb [00:15] Would 20GB be good enough for xubuntu? [00:15] yup [00:15] i use xubuntu on thumbdrives [00:15] Wish I had a SATA adapter for this laptop. I have an old 320GB HDD I ripped out of one of those external ones. [00:16] you can get adapters, the issue is space [00:17] That's why I want the 320 GB. [04:12] does anyone know what it is about Xubuntu that makes it use system tray icons for update notifications? [04:12] package, config, etc [04:13] I installed ubuntu-desktop package over an Xubuntu install, because I was testing some things, and in Unity it had those tray icons.... which I want to replicate on a straight ubunt instal. [04:13] install* [04:13] ubuntu* [04:13] sheesh [04:15] update-notifier? [04:18] that is on a default ubuntu install.. so I am curious as to what makes it different [04:18] ubuntu itself uses popups that are annoying. [04:18] I would rather have it be the tray icon version, same with apper. [04:19] Raring or saucy? [04:19] raring [04:21] (I have mangled versions of the indicator stuff, and killed the notifier long ago as it's a pain.) [04:21] yeah, it's just less of a pain in xubuntu. [04:21] in unity it bugs the heck out of you by popping up in your face. [04:22] ...Does the manager come up? [04:22] same with the "you need to reboot and this will stay open until you do" [04:22] it does. [04:22] I'm just curious as to what makes xubuntu different. [04:23] /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/20_xubuntu-default-settings.gschema.override that might. [04:23] I shoulda kept the xubuntu ones. [04:23] ahh nonexistent file. [04:23] so that may do it [04:24] From xubuntu-default-settings [04:24] aahhh xubuntu-default-settings [04:25] hmmm that may pull in more than I want [04:25] :( [04:25] sounds like a VM is in order. [04:26] wait a minute [04:26] xfce4-notifyd [04:26] lol? [04:27] Much better than the "default" one. [04:28] :-/ [04:28] "notification-daemon" [04:28] where is that executable normally located? [04:28] I installed it, but it isn't in /usr/bin [04:29] It's a daemon, but it has a configuration tool at /usr/bin/xfce4-notifyd-config [04:30] yeah but how do you start the daemon [04:30] :( [05:14] Would anyone have suggestions for reducing bootime? I'm at 100 seconds! The machine booted faster before switching to linux... [05:15] meh_: install bootchart and post the results or google to check for the unneeded services which you can disable [05:18] baizon_:okay. [05:19] baizon_ how could I post it? [05:26] baizon_: I'm kind of new to irc would be able to tell me how to post a chart [05:47] sorry was afk. [07:01] hi i got a liveSD (usb) but I notice that my installation is not persistant [07:01] after a reboot I get the defautl desktop no config files [07:01] should I disable some kind of fs switch [07:02] maybe because I choose to 'try xubuntu before installing' [07:02] has some kind of union-filesystem or something that makes a steady state [07:20] anyone around? [07:26] not many I'd guess [07:26] I'd assume if you've not got persistence you've not set it up to have it - a normal default usb image won't [07:27] !persistence [07:27] To have some persistent storage when using a Live CD, follow the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDPersistence [07:34] elfy: thanks. [07:35] elfy: I am reading about it, seems is not that easy, since I am running on the liveUSB, I guess I need to re-download the iso and open it [07:35] and then do the initrd, I wonder if I cnan pass this as a boot argument [08:04] I want to install on an SD === brainwash_ is now known as brainwash [10:29] does anyone have experience working with pcmcia memory cards in 12.04? [10:30] What are they supposed to do? Presenting awfully slow memory to a computer? :) [10:30] sure [10:31] i am just trying to use it to load a driver [10:31] pcmcia? are those still around? [10:31] not really [10:31] this isn't even flash [10:31] rygD, um, USB is WAY faster - and cheap too! [10:31] 2meg sram [10:32] cfhowlett: doesn't work with what i am using [11:14] Hey, how do I add a new window manager? [11:15] Like, what manual steps do I need to do to make it either run by default or be selectable somehow? [11:16] buu, sudo apt-get install...then logout. choose the other option. login. [11:16] cfhowlett: The one I installed wasn't via apt-get =] [11:17] buu, ok HOW did you install? :) [11:17] make install! [11:18] buu, try the logout/login method [11:18] buu, if that fails, ask in #ubuntu ... more eyes to see [11:25] cfhowlett: do you think someone over there might be able to help with my issues? [11:26] rygD, couldn't hurt to ask [11:27] buu: you wanna run it with xfce or just by itself? [11:32] Sysi: Just by itself [11:33] Also, new question, how do I get it to stop going into suspend when I close the lid? [11:33] Do I have to restart for the setting to take effect [13:31] Is there any quick and easy way to temporarily mount a samba share without cli mount/fstab stuff? [13:31] Like via the file browser? === daniel is now known as Guest23518 [13:40] Hi [13:41] some people have see this clones on the panel : http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/capturedcran-05102013-153749.php ??? I'm running Xubuntu Precise on my laptop. And I'm a problem that I can't log in. The screen that asks for the password doesn't show, and I get a few messages like "checking battery state [ok]". The last message is "could not open a connection to your authentciation agent", and the screen is stuck there. [16:39] If I press the shut down button, I get a couple more messages and it shuts down fine, though. === em is now known as clickgay === clickgay is now known as em [23:09] hello.
