rick_h_greg-g: you forgot the details :P02:44

brouschHeh. Ruby is taking some blame for the healthcare.gov website debacle, even though it's really just the front page and not the failing part https://github.com/CMSgov/healthcare.gov12:19
=== lotia-away is now known as lotia
rick_h_http://r.bmark.us/u/47073e446539c3 ok this one I might get into. I hate the fire alarms in the house13:17
rick_h_and since one is in the hallways the idea of it lighting your way in the dark is cool13:17
rick_h_oh and morning13:18
rick_h_brousch: I'm floored it's ruby tbh13:18
trevlarfun fact, healthcare.gov was designed by a royal oak design shop that a friend works at13:23
trevlarthey didn't do any development though13:24
rick_h_ah, very cool13:24
trevlarin fact, when I asked him, his exact words were: "we take no responsibility for the development disaster that happened over there"13:24
rick_h_lol13:24
rick_h_"once it loads it's kinda pretty...but that getting it to load isn't my issue"13:25
cmaloneyI'd be a little wary of getting an expensive CO detector13:46
cmaloneythey have a lifespan of 7 years13:46
cmaloneyThat said, you'll probably replace it sooner than that, so I'll just shut up. :)13:46
rick_h_hah13:47
rick_h_well, I have to admit that I'm dying to see if they can go hte security route13:47
rick_h_we looked at getting a security system once and it was killer. The devices were clunky, expensive, and the service was expensive. If I could put one of those in the hall up and down stairs and get phone notificaitons, etc along with fire, co2, and a cool hally night light...kind of killer13:48
cmaloneyYeah, that's a plus.13:48
rick_h_and I am on my 3rd fire alarm in the hall right now13:49
cmaloneyamn13:49
cmaloneyI replaced our CO detector mostly because it was designed to fall off the wall13:50
cmaloneyso I got a tabletop model13:50
rick_h_I had one that hung in the outlet13:50
rick_h_big thing13:50
cmaloneyYeah, and where we had it hanging was in a traffic path13:50
cmaloneyso it got knocked off the wall, and broke the clip13:50
ColonelPanic001the house I just bought has a simple alarm system in, I should probably get the service again. It's already installed and everything13:54
jjesse  i had a conversation w/ a heating and cooling guy who had pretty negative things to say about the Nest.  He recommended a  honeywell system that he said could do more13:57
jjessei never did any research to see if he could back up what he said13:57
* ColonelPanic001 needs to replace his thermostat13:57
rick_h_so everyone I know iwth a nest loves them13:57
ColonelPanic001I just can't justify $250. It does look neat, though13:58
rick_h_but with out two floors I know I'd have to get two and it'd really only work well if we did dual zone furnace I think13:58
jjessethis guy said a lot of times the nest wasn't configured correctly13:58
cmaloneyjjesse: Was this person selling the Honeywell system?13:58
jjessebut i think he was just complaining cause he wasn't getting paid to install them so not quite sure i could back that up13:58
jjessecmaloney, no he wasn't selling them13:58
cmaloneyjjesse: OK, then there may be something to it13:59
jjessecmaloney, totally agree13:59
ColonelPanic001I might just be naive, but paid to install them? I expected it to be "install a lightbulb" easy.13:59
jjessehe had 2 options he recommended over the nest13:59
jjessebut i don't remember the other one13:59
cmaloneyColonelPanic001: Older homes may not have the wiring to support it13:59
ColonelPanic001hm. what wiring? Power?13:59
cmaloneyI won a smart thermostat that I couldn't use because it only supported a certain number of wires14:00
ColonelPanic001hm. I have to read up on this later. My house is old. (1950)14:00
cmaloneyHouse was built in the 1950s and the wiring is very basic14:00
cmaloneyI couldn't wire up a Smarthome X10 wall switch because it only had two wires14:01
cmaloneyhttp://wiki.xtronics.com/index.php/Thermostat_signals_and_wiring14:02
ColonelPanic001bookmarked, thanks. That actually is very useful14:05
ColonelPanic001and for what it's worth, I've had this house for maybe two months after nearly 5 years of an apartment. I don't know much about houses. Feel free to enlighten me14:05
ColonelPanic001I mean, in general, not just this moment14:05
ColonelPanic001for example, I seem to have drastically underestimated thermostats. I assumed all the connection needed to do was AC on/off, and heat on/off14:06
brouschrick_h_: I get the impression that the static parts of the website are that ruby project, and the markeplace where the real work is done is elsewhere14:06
rick_h_brousch: lol, I love that the 'static' bits are a dynamic language server side14:07
rick_h_brousch: but yea, I'd guess as well without looking14:07
brouschI think it's actually a ruby static website generator14:14
jjesseare we talking about healthcare.org?14:15
rick_h_jjesse: yea14:15
jjesseoh14:15
jjessei read someplace that like 40 some files were generated or something crazy14:16
jjesseper person14:16
brousch.gov14:16
jjesseyeah whatever :)14:16
rick_h_ahhhh, the sweetness of a new battery14:17
rick_h_just keeps going and going14:17
jrwrenwhy would you want a home alarm?14:22
jrwrenif someone breaks into my house, they would look around, see not much of value, and leave.14:22
jrwrenor they would be stupid enough to take things that are not worth much of anything14:22
brouschDon't you have a big dog?14:23
brouschThey are my alarms14:23
jrwreni don't. But I agree, that is a better alternative14:23
brouschBARK BARK BARK JUST LETTING YOU KNOW SOMEONE WALKING BY IN THE STREET LOOKED AT OUR HOUSE BARK BARK BARK14:23
rick_h_jrwren: because I leave across the country or world with a wife and small child.14:24
rick_h_jrwren: and my wife freaks out by every house noise and sleeps in the guest room with the dog in her bed to help her get through the night14:24
jrwrenpeace of mind is a reason.14:24
rick_h_:)14:25
brouschwow14:25
brouschAlso, you live in Detroit. Don't forget that part14:25
rick_h_yea, I wish I could get my rot, I'd feel a lot better then14:26
rick_h_the boy is almost old enough but not sure the house is big enough for another pet :/14:26
jrwrenClarkston is NOT detroit14:28
rick_h_definitely14:29
rick_h_but we've had out cars in the driveway broken into twice since we've lived here14:29
jrwrenyou can't even claim detroit closeness unless you near a bus stop.14:29
rick_h_and we've got a few strange folks in the neighborhood since property values have gone down 100k14:29
jrwrenI think Great Lakes Cross is probably the farthest north that a detroit area bus will run14:29
jrwrendude, that sucks, but what do they take from your car?14:29
rick_h_money, cds, nothing much. We don't leave much in them. The most expensive thing is the car seats really14:30
rick_h_but they left those14:30
jrwrenmy wife got a little more cautious when she found out there was a reported sexual assault just down the street. But those are usually people who know people. AFAIK it was not a home invasion. those are very rare.14:32
rick_h_yea, unfortunately fear isn't always a rational thing14:33
brouschEverything East of Ann Arbor is Detroit. We've been through this discussion before14:34
rick_h_lol14:34
rick_h_AA is "out west" for me14:34
ColonelPanic001God if the northern suburbs are bad enoguh to be Detroit, Downriver must be... I don't even know14:34
rick_h_forget there's half a state out there14:34
ColonelPanic001There's nothing west of Ann Arbor but politics and fields, I assume14:35
jjesse+1 to brousch14:35
brouschColonelPanic001: You forgot Amway14:40
ColonelPanic001:\14:40
brouschfarms, politics, and amway14:41
ColonelPanic001So back in 2005-2006 we started WSULUG. Sitting on my desk now is a box of Ubuntu 6.06 install CDs from when they'd send you a free box.14:41
ColonelPanic001I have no idea what I'm going to do with them. I'm thinking "art project"14:41
jjesseman i need more coffee today… just spent way too much time trying to figure out why my test lab couldn't get out to the internet and then realized the server running DNS was turned off :(14:41
rick_h_oops14:41
jjesseyup14:42
brouschColonelPanic001: I have 2 boxes of CDs from cmaloney14:42
brouschTime to make a big fish for next year's artprize14:42
ColonelPanic001\o/14:52
jrwrenbrousch thinks NYC is Detroit14:54
brouschCome on now. Detroit ends at the lake/river14:55
jrwrenjjesse: monitoring with notification :p14:55
jrwrenbrousch: thinks alpena is detroit14:55
brouschit starts in the thumb pit14:56
jrwrenanyone ever use python C api to put python in C code?14:59
jrwrenpython-config has nice --cflags and --ldflags to help me, but I still get undefined reference linker errors14:59
brouschHm, remember the ERP I said could kind of run on Linux? Turns out they're using MySQL as the DB15:19
brouschDotNET with MySQL15:20
jrwrenbeen there, done that.15:51
jrwrenbrousch: ask for the source.15:51
jrwrenbrousch: the mysql connector for .net is GPL.15:51
jrwrennot LGPL, which means if they are using it they must give you their source.15:51
jrwrenunless they bought a mysql license15:52
brouschWhy would I want the source to the mysql_odbc?15:53
jrwrenGPL.16:19
jrwrenyou link to it, its open source.16:19
jrwrenyou GPL request the ERPs source.16:19
greg-gI think brousch is like "man, I don't read source, as long as its free as in beer I'm ok" ;)16:37
jrwrenwhat ERP software is it?16:39
jrwrenon 12.04 anyone filter dhclient message from rsyslog  have a howto?16:40
brouschjrwren: https://www.fabsuite.com/en/17:12
