kaddihi guys, I was referred here, because I have a tiny problem with my new laptop. It has a very high resolution (3200x1800) and it seems xorg can't quite cope with it. http://imagebin.org/273510 This is my desktop, on the top there's the display config, and it will only allow me to choose the maximum resolution, there is no other option. In the middle you can see quassel and there's a problem because the fonts scale according to the resolution, but not 17:13
kaddithe space in which the fonts are written. I was asking for help in ubuntu and they referred me here.  17:13
kaddimy xorg.log was posted here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6227541/17:14
kaddiand I can only get a screen at all, if I enable nomodeset during boot, otherwise I get a completely grey screen17:14
kaddii was advised to either post here for a comment from you guys or to file both the nomodeset and the lack of multiple resolutions as bugs. Which I will do, if you think it's worth it17:16

bjsniderkaddi, does this kde software scale window parts based on resolution? is this a real feature?18:01
kaddibjsnider: i'm not sure.. i posted also in kde about this, but am still waiting for a reply ;)18:02
bjsnideryeah i think that's really the issue18:02
kaddii would be happy if i could scale down the resolution a little for now. :p18:02
bjsniderand i don't think you're going to like the answer18:02
kaddiwhich is?18:02
bjsniderwhy not scale down the fonts?18:03
bjsnideri think they're going to tell you that window parts are not supposed to scale up, but i hope that i'm wrong18:03
kaddiat that resolution if I scale down the font to fit in the window parts, I probably won't be able to read the font anymore18:04
bjsniderit looks like the window border is the biggest problem18:05
kaddibjsnider: the weird part is that certain areas do scale, wile other's don't. Eg the menu-bar is perfectly scaled, but the title bar not18:05
kaddiyeah18:05
bjsnideri'm 100% sure this is a kde issue18:05
bjsniderdoes unity or gnome-shell work better?18:05
kaddihaven't tried yet18:06
kaddiif the resolution can't be changed there either, is there anything i can do?18:06
bjsnideri think gnome-shell would work because of all the whitespace in the cantarell font18:06
bjsniderthis was always going to be a problem as time progressed and people started getting these high-res monitors18:07
bjsniderwhat's the dot pitch on your fonts?18:07
kaddieh, how do I check that?18:07
bjsnidermust be a lot higher than 9618:07
bjsniderwhat are the physical dimensions of the monitor?18:10
kaddiit's a 13.3" screen. I can give you the actual dimension in a second18:12
bjsniderneeds to be measured, just the screen area18:14
kaddi16.5cm high, 29,4cm wide18:15
bjsniderin inches18:15
kaddi6.5 inches times 11.6 inches18:16
bjsnider276 dpi18:17
bjsniderso, typical monitors until recently had a dpi of 9618:17
bjsniderpaper is considered to be about 30018:17
bjsniderso you're almost at that level18:17
kaddi:)18:17
bjsnideryou shouldn't need much antialiasing or subpixel smoothing18:17
bjsnideryou're way above the level of hdtv as well18:18
bjsniderthat's why some parts of windows are so small, they're programmed for 9618:19
kaddiyeah, i woudln't mind to lower resolution to hdtv if it makes the problems  go away18:19
bjsniderto circle back around to the original point18:19
kaddihaha, yeah18:19
bjsniderit wouldn't18:19
bjsniderit would make everything blurry18:19
kaddioh well.. that's not what I'm going for >.>18:20
bjsniderunless this is a crt, which it isn't, you have to drive it up to native or everything will be blurry18:20
bjsnideri'd like to know what the kde guys have to say about this if you want to update me18:20
kaddii will... as soon as they asnwer :p18:20
kaddii don't think there's anyone there atm18:21
bjsniderbtw, the calculation, just for transparency, is resolution / physical dimension in inches18:21
bjsniderso 3200 / 11.6 and so forth18:21
kaddiok, thanks :) good to know :)18:21
kaddii've been playing with font sizes and it's looking much better now, but there are still issues ;p18:23
bjsnidertry turning off smoothing and hinting and see how the fonts look18:26
bjsnideri don't know how to do that in kde btw18:26
kaddiif I suddenly disappear it's the lightning we have atm18:26
kaddilooks good, but it doesn't help with the menu dimensions :p18:29
kaddiforcing the dpi of fonts to 96 makes things look fuzzy18:30
bjsnideryeah because it doesn't match the monitor's native dpi18:31
bjsnidertoldja so18:31
bjsniderwhat about a different theme18:31
kaddikde is saying that it's not an issue because it's configurable18:35
kaddiand they're suggesting to reduce the resolution, which I can't :p 18:42
kaddibut with their help i've been able to resize almost everything18:56
JanCbjsnider: "typical monitors until recently had a dpi of 96" is somewhat misleading; 10-15 years ago, it was typically higher for CRT monitors (something around 120dpi wasn't uncommon), but it got lowered again when LCD monitors came into fashion...18:56
kaddithanks for the tips cya all later :)19:01
bjsniderkde shouldn't be telling people to drive their monitors below the native resolution20:34
