[04:04] Hi, xorg-edgers is what exactly? I'm reading a lot of different sites about dota2 issues and some of them mention this [04:04] it's related to graphics, but i don't know if it's nvidia or ati or both [04:04] and what it really does [04:04] http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/xorg-edgers [04:04] has warnings about broken system... [04:05] not sure i just wanna jump into it [04:31] xabster: ppa's are not officially supported, but that is a PPA for graphics drivers [04:31] !ppa [04:31] A Personal Package Archive (PPA) can provide alternate software not normally available in the offical Ubuntu repositories - Looking for a PPA? See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas - WARNING: PPAs are unsupported third-party packages, and you use them at your own risk. See also !addppa and !ppa-purge [04:31] yeah, i wrote that [04:31] xabster: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa should tell you everything you need to know [04:31] xabster: you wrote what? [04:32] that it was gfx drivers [04:36] xabster: you'll notice that there are drivers for both nvidia and ati at the link i gave, and maybe that answers the question you have [04:37] yeah, i saw that too, so i guess it [04:37] 's for both, and there are also other things [04:37] so it appears to be ... unofficial graphics driver updates? [04:40] xabster: they are *all*, bascially as official as they get [04:41] xabster: if you want newer versions of graphics drivers than are in the official repos, then you might want to try that PPA [04:41] right, but there were 33 updates after adding it, so i guess it's newer versions [04:41] i did [04:41] i'm not confused about what ppa's are, i was confused about what exactly it was offering [04:41] xabster: its offering newer packages from an unsupported source [04:41] i heard the xorg-edgers thing before [04:41] xabster: ubuntu is basically frozen, so, you can use ppa's to add sources easily [04:42] you're answering way too generally for what i'm asking but it's ok [04:42] i know.. [04:42] xabster: they are newer, and unsupported, and both nvidia and ati, as well as others [04:46] ok ty [04:46] reboot === buu_ is now known as buu [05:39] is it possible to change the theme of xubuntu using dconf editor ? [06:42] hi, so I installed xubuntu 13.04 as a dual boot on this windows 7 system, and the install completed successfully without any issues, but when I reboot, I don't see any option to choose which OS I want to boot, it just automatically boots in to windows 7 without so much as pause [06:44] question is, does anyone have an idea on what might be happening, known issues of this sort, etc.? The only thing I can think of is that I installed it on my main drive, which is a couple of SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration [06:47] Is this BIOS or EFI? [06:48] BIOS, I've never messed with EFI before, not even entirely sure what it is still [06:48] !grub [06:48] GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 [06:48] I'd check the first link. [06:49] just checking, you're talking to me, right? [06:49] xubuntu543: Yeppers. [06:50] xubuntu543: Grub is the Xubuntu boot manager, it should detect windows and list that as well. [06:50] sweet, thank you, checking through the link now [06:51] wait, the problem is that the windows installation was the first OS on the system, not the other way like the link suggests--I still have never successfully booted into Xubuntu beyond the LiveCD installation process [06:52] xubuntu543: Well, the process is still pretty much the same if grub failed to install when you first installed the system. [06:55] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing too. [07:10] Unit193: sorry for the lag, and thanks for that tip, I'm exploring that further, I suppose that totally makes sense, since I have no recollection of GRUB actually making it onto the system at any point in the process. === Noskcaj10 is now known as Noskcaj [12:09] hi, in xubuntu 13.10beta2 live cd, should permissions of automounted media in /media/xubuntu/* be 0700? seems a little restre] [12:09] ... restrictive to me, and im not sure if it is a bug [12:14] kurts: xubuntu 13.10 has not been released yet, so try asking in #ubuntu+1 or #xubuntu-devel [12:23] also beta2 is quite old already === em is now known as qman === qman is now known as em [15:38] how do i install LAMP? [15:39] gdos: sudo apt-get install apache2 mysql-server ... [15:39] bekks: isn't there a meta-package that installs and gives me a default configuration? [15:39] No. [15:40] !lamp [15:40] LAMP is an acronym for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. For help with setting up LAMP on Ubuntu, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP - See also the Server CD installation process. [17:15] alguem do BRASIL? [18:41] upgraded to xfce4 and desktop settings is different. i cant figure out how to use a custom image for background...? [18:51] I need to know why the fn keys to control backlight work in ubuntu and kubuntu but not in xubuntu [18:52] the notification shows the level of backlight, but it doesn't actually change [18:58] Um, a little more info would be helpful [18:58] like the make and model of the laptop [18:58] the version of xubuntu you're using [19:01] the laptop is a toshiba l750 with a nvidia card [19:01] xubuntu is version 13.10...but I have the same problem with 13.04 [19:04] LyzardKing, your laptop has an nvidia gpu? [19:14] Poisoned_Dragon: yes [19:21] hello, i want to start / install my blender version 2.65 but xubuntu doesn't react to the excute file [19:22] can someone help? [19:22] Poisoned_Dragon: my gpu is nvidia. I tried adding acpi_backlight=vendor to /etc/default/grub but that didn't work [19:33] I have a thinkpad t520 with ubuntu 13.04, xubuntu-desktop and an HP 6520 printer. The printer was working fine, but now when I try to print it asks me for photo paper. I'm not trying to print a photo, I have no idea why it thinks I am, and I can't find any sort of dialog to see the active state of the printer. Settings Manager/Printer/Printer Properties/Printer Options has "Media Type" set to "Plain Paper" [19:34] I am literally trying to print some text in MousePad, so I don't know why it thinks it needs photo paper. [19:39] Hm, I found the "Media source" on the printer options, changed from autoselect to main tray...nothing happening. [19:40] Ah, had to hit the OK button on the printer's touchscreen, but still the same response, out of paper. [20:58] hi I have installed xubuntu on my SDcard but I have some issues [20:58] first of it gets very slow sometimes, for no apparent reason. [20:58] I put 2gb of swapping partition but still very very slow at some point. [20:58] I did dmesg and I got this Updating information on frequency 5580 MHz for a 20 MHz width channel with regulatory rule [20:59] not sure if its related. [21:15] hello [21:15] got a few questions if someone has the time [21:15] n3glv: First ask the questions, then see if someone answers. [21:16] ok, running xubuntu 13 on a gateway (acer) laptop [21:16] n3glv: Which "Ubuntu 13"? [21:16] it's an intel B960, was I right to choose amd64 distro? [21:17] umm, 13.04? might be 13.10 [21:17] xubuntu [21:17] n3glv: Check it using lsb_release -a [21:17] hence my reason to join this chan [21:17] k [21:17] Description: Ubuntu 13.04 [21:18] nearly everything works, but cpu stepping and lcd brightness seem to be borked [21:20] so I came to see if someone can point me in the right direction to fix [21:21] anyone> [21:21] ? [21:22] * n3glv Beuler? [21:22] I need to know why my installation go so slow [21:22] is a 16GB SD card [21:22] JZA_: slow internet? [21:22] and I use it as a HD replacement [21:22] oh [21:22] SD are SLOW compared to hd [21:23] what class / Mb/Sec? [21:23] n3glv: well it's much more slow than the liveUSB I was running [21:23] from [21:23] yes [21:23] how do I get that info. [21:23] dmesg gave me something like this.. [21:23] written on the ds card [21:23] SD rather [21:23] or packing it came in? [21:23] Updating information on frequency 5580 MHz for a 20 MHz width channel with regulatory rule [21:24] no, I installed from my usb -> SD card. [21:24] something like class 4? [21:24] yes, THE CARD HAS A SPEED RATE [21:24] know do I know which class is it? [21:25] and, if you installed vs making a live SD, it's going to be horribly slow [21:25] JZA_: Look at the card, it os printed on it, most likely. [21:25] since it's no longer ramdisk [21:25] well I am running from it [21:25] * n3glv wonders JZA_ home language [21:25] * n3glv doubts it's english [21:25] n3glv: what's the difference? [21:26] JZA_: does it have a circle, with a number, like 4 inside on the SD card? [21:26] n3glv: no idea, is inside the machine [21:26] where's the packing it came in? [21:26] n3glv: long gone.. is not a new card [21:26] so, prolly a class 4 [21:26] JZA_: the difference is: performance difference at a factor of 1000 between flash memory (SD Card) and your RAM. [21:26] or even slower [21:27] easily 1000x [21:27] I use raspberry pi for some things [21:27] bekks: so my liveUSB (which is even older) was running faster was because it was loaded on the RAM disk. [21:27] JZA_: Correct. [21:27] and going from class 4 to class 10 > rated at 30Mb/sec was HUGE improvement [21:29] a live CD / USB does not do tons of file i/o to the device [21:29] it caches most of what it needs in ramdisk [21:29] I see [21:29] so should it be better to disable persistance on the RAM [21:29] The I/O is used in every linux. [21:30] persistence to RAM is pointless. Turn off your computer, and your "persistent RAM" will be gone. [21:30] s/RAM/liveUSB/g [21:30] 12Why do you think persistence affect the usage of the I/O cache? [21:30] I just need to be able to work on this machine and save my files. [21:30] use cloud storage [21:30] Then use a persistent liveusb and store your files whereever you want. [21:31] or mount another usb device and write to that [21:31] huh? how can cloud storage help me? [21:31] n3glv: cloud storage is most likely massively slower than a slow SD card. [21:31] JZA_: it's non volitile [21:31] he said save files [21:31] I need to be able to work, some times include, installing new apps, and also saving configurations to it, like timezone, etc. [21:31] n3glv: Even for storing files, cloud storage is most likely slower than a SD card. [21:32] I said work [21:32] JZA_: Then just use a persistent liveUSB. [21:32] JZA_: external usb hard drive? [21:32] yes, casper [21:32] JZA_: Or just install Ubuntu on your harddrive. [21:32] that does not appear to be an option [21:33] nope [21:33] "nope it isnt an option" or "nope it is"? [21:33] I sometimes dont have the ext-HD available. [21:33] JZA_: Then a USB device is your only chance. [21:34] JZA_: Get a fast one, to have some performance at least. [21:34] bekks: right but I need to open it, casper is not really helping. [21:34] why not? [21:34] may need remounted rw? [21:34] because it doesnt allow me to install apps to it. [21:34] it _should_ [21:34] JZA_: It does. [21:35] also can't access the 3GB missing from a 4GB USB disk [21:35] JZA_: You can remaster an image as you like, using casper. [21:35] are you using sudo or as root? [21:35] sudo [21:35] I can sudo su root [21:35] install gparted [21:35] sudo su root is pointless. [21:35] gparted the usb device [21:35] sudo -i or sudo, no need for su. [21:35] see what it says is there [21:35] I have gparted, can I partition the USB which the OS is running from? [21:35] depends on how it's mounted [21:36] and partitioned [21:36] ok [21:40] well, I'm out for now [21:40] I am doing the partition, now, I will try to edit casper file for persistance check up
