bigcalmTheOpenSourcerer: +1 I really value mine08:21
TheOpenSourcererGosh - I was being rather facetious. I've only ever had one massage in my life - didn;t really like it much either.08:22

* MartijnVdS wants the Nexus 5.. rumours and hints (given by Kit Kat's official G+ page) suggest it'll be released on Oct 2808:23

TheOpenSourcererI've got a good idea...08:33
TheOpenSourcerer"Let's mix salts of magnesium and iron with gelatin to create a foam... then if we heat this foam to 800°C it should trigger a process called calcination, which degrades the gelatin and oxidizes the metals..."08:33

JamesTaitYeah, I'm not sure what the situation is there, tbh.08:51
JamesTaitI was too busy re-requesting the click index all night, seeing what new apps popey had uploaded, to pay any attention to anything else that might be going on.08:52
JamesTaitOh, apart from Random Cats.08:53
* Laney ticks that one off the PRD08:53
bigcalmTalking of apps, today's Cyanide & Happiness is amusing :)08:53
MartijnVdSbigcalm: 8-)08:54
JamesTaitHah!08:54
Laneyffs08:54
LaneyI just did sign in and now I'm not getting any apps returned :(08:54

SuperMattman, as much as I love using citrix ica for my copy of outlook, I really hate that it keeps stealing focus as it loads >:(08:58
Laneygrug08:58
MartijnVdSSuperMatt: my sarcasm-o-meter just exploded08:59
SuperMattmaybe love was a little too strong08:59
SuperMattI merely put up with having to use outlook at work09:00
MartijnVdSSuperMatt: we use some kind of online version of outlook at work09:00
MartijnVdSOffice 360 or something09:00
SuperMattI wouldn't be surprised if my company moved to that09:02
SuperMattI think they want to be as platform agnostic as possible, considering the number of macs in the office09:02
MartijnVdSyeah macs *are* useful for that ;)09:02
JamesTaitLaney, getting apps now?09:07
Laneyno09:07
JamesTaitWeird.09:08

JamesTaitOK, I can stop worrying now then. :)09:09

bigcalmUpgraded my laptop from 13.04 to 13.10. It gets to the login screen just fine. Once logged in, the screen is black. The mouse continues to move about okay. Nothing loads. There is a crash file in /var/crash of "_usr_lib_x86_64-linux-gnu_hud_hud-service.1000.crash". I'm given the chance to report the error and then nothing else happens09:54
SuperMatt:/09:54
bigcalmI can ssh into the laptop, so rebooting isn't a case of holding the power button09:54

davmor2bigcalm: have you installed the binary gfx drivers if so remove them and reboot10:28
bigcalmHumm, okay10:29
davmor2bigcalm: sometimes the new drivers can't cope with the old config this is why I back everything up and do fresh installs :)10:32
mungbean_can't decide whether i want 2 x 4:3 monitors or one 16:9 monitor10:40
awilkins2x 4:3 monitors as long as they are 1600x1200 ones10:41
awilkinsBut where would you find a 4:3 1600x1200 monitor these days....10:41
mungbean_they are 1280x012410:41
mungbean_i just scavenge what i can find10:41
mungbean_i think my performance problems are related to 2 monitors though10:41
MartijnVdSmungbean_: one 21:9 one10:41
awilkinsHmm, well, the 16:9 one is likely to be a 1920x1050 one, max10:42
awilkinsSo I'd go with 2=10:42
mungbean_yeah10:42
mungbean_i think i'll ask for a bigger single monitor10:42
awilkinsI just have 2 widescreen ones...10:42
awilkins1920x1080 (high Hz 3D one) and a 1680x1050 one to the right. After my primary 1680x1050 cold cathode tube failed10:43
awilkinsAt least I think it was the tube10:43
awilkinsNew one is LED10:43
SuperMattWho were the two young guys at the launch party last night? From Oxford. Are you here?10:45
bigcalmdavmor2: yeah, the laptop does work with the basic driver. Same problem I had when I upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 though - fan always running and slow graphics. Guess I need to wait for a PPA to come out with legacy ATI drivers that work in 13.1010:45
davmor2bigcalm: no now you can try the ati gfx pick the -updates one see if that works if not install the standard ones10:47
bigcalmdavmor2: eh?10:47
MartijnVdSalso, the new kernel doesn't enable the new ATI bits by default, does it?10:47
davmor2bigcalm: the config is now set to the current free driver. The issue was possibly that you had a ppa gfx install with it's cofig that was different to the standard, you can now try the ati drivers as it will have a fresh config now10:49
davmor2bigcalm: don't forget ppa are disabled on upgrades and not re-enabled so you, ppa build driver would still be set for raring with a possibly modified ati config10:51

bigcalmdavmor2: https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx is the PPA that was using for the legacy ATI driver. But there's no saucy build yet. I tried using the raring one, but it didn't work11:07
davmor2How old is your laptop if it's using legacy drivers11:08
bigcalmReading the top line of the PPA page "If there will be no more driver updates made by AMD, than this repository will not support Ubuntu 13.10 and beyond. Use open source drivers instead (installed by default)."11:08

ixxvilor it's not exctly necessary unless i'm super anal about security?14:13
ixxvilor arethe updates only pertaining to what pkgs i've installed ?14:14
shaunoit's usually best practice to install them unless you have a real reason not to14:14
shaunoand yeah, you'll only get updates to packages you already have installed14:14
ixxvilah cool14:14
ixxvilthanks14:14
ixxvilalso i'm on 12.04, but i hear there's a 13 now, is there any reason to switch?14:16
diddledanyou'll have to go through 13.04 to get to 13.10 which was released yesterday14:17
MartijnVdSixxvil: 12.04 is a long-term stable release, the next release (14.04) will be one as well, you can upgrade to that when it's released in April if you don't want to do the intermediate upgrades (12.04 -> 12.10 -> 13.04 -> 13.10 -> 14.04)14:18
shaunoif it's a server, I'd be tempted to leave it on 12.04 (LTS) unless there's a specific need to upgrade14:18
MartijnVdSixxvil: (waiting results in the much simpler 12.04 -> 14.04)14:18
MartijnVdS!lts14:18
lubotu3LTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; with the exception of 12.04 (Precise Pangolin), which will be supported for 5 years on the desktop. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Precise (Precise Pangolin 12.04)14:18
ixxvilalright14:19
ixxvilthanks yea im not running anything big here14:19
ixxvilyou could say it is a server i guess, vps sort of thing14:19
MartijnVdSixxvil: but you might not want to download 6-700MB 3 times in a row :)14:20
shaunomainly because I'm lazy, and don't want to have to upgrade my server every 6 months. staying on the LTS track means I'm still supported through the lifecycle, but with a less frantic upgrade schedule14:20
ixxvilMartijnVdS: ye makes sense14:20

ali1234is there a way to do incremental backups of mysql?17:19
ali1234i've kinda inherited a server17:19
ali1234and it is setup to do rsnapshot backups17:19
ali1234but the only thing that ever changes on it is the database17:19
ali1234these are backed up by dumping each database to a text file, which is then part of the rsnapshot17:20
MartijnVdSwell that should then be incremental17:20
MartijnVdSas long as rsnapshot uses rsync17:20
ali1234it isn't17:20
MartijnVdSmaybe have it use rsync -c17:20
ali1234rsnapshot is incremental in the sense it only stores a new copy of files that changed17:21
ali1234if you change one row in the databse, rsnapshot stores a new copy of the entire 500B dump17:21
MartijnVdSali1234: there's automysqlbackup17:21
MartijnVdSmaybe that has some slick tricks?17:21
ali1234i was thinking of putting the mysqldumps into a git repo, and then rsnapshotting that17:22
MartijnVdSali1234: eek17:22
MartijnVdSthough you'd be able to keep ALL of the history :)17:22

knightwisealso something nice to play with;19:33
ali1234why not just buy a computer instead?19:33

knightwiseali1234: probably right .. but its always nice to try19:33

knightwisepretty expensive for a samsung accessorie19:34
DJonesIf you need a hardware keyboard, buy a laptop or a blackberry19:42
knightwiseaarg :) A blackberry :)19:42
knightwiseto be honest, I think you are right , a tablet is a tablet , i think there isn't a point into turning it into a laptop19:42
DJonesTo me there's 3 ways of looking at it, there's laptops, there's phones and then there's tablets, tablets seem the best of both worlds, phablets are an odd mix, too big for a phone, but too small for a tablet19:44

leo_33\i see.dont recruiters get paid once someone gets hired?21:28
ali1234no, i think they get paid based on how many resumes they submit21:30
