OjzcrocI put ubuntu touch on my Nexus 4; however, when I tried to connect to wifi, the wifi password wasn't prompted, and it wouldn't connect. Does anyone have any idea why, or how it can be fixed?00:50

JasonFeliceOjzcroc: I just did this but I don't remember.  Maybe you have to go to settings?01:34
OjzcrocI tried going to settings; it still wouldn't prompt01:35
Ojzcrochttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Networking#A.2BIBw-Wi-Fi.2BIB0_screen_of_System_Settings01:35
Ojzcrocthis thing tells you how to do it, but one of the buttons they tell you to press is nonexistent on my phone's setting01:35
Ojzcrocthis thing tells you how to do it, but one of the buttons they tell you to press is nonexistent on my phone's settings01:35
Ojzcrocit says "press other network", but my phone has no such option01:36
JasonFeliceOh, you don't see the network in the network list?01:36
OjzcrocI do see the network; the tutorial says that under "other network" you can type the name of the network, and also the password, since it wouldn't prompt for the password01:37
JasonFeliceHrmm.  Let me try to join a different network and see what happens for me.01:38
Ojzcrocok01:39
JasonFeliceIf I pull down the network list from the status bar and I tap on a different network, it prompts me for the WPA password and gives me a 'Cancel' and 'Connect' button.01:39
OjzcrocMine just ticks the box01:39
Ojzcrocand doesn't prompt01:39
Ojzcrocthis was on the list of bugs, but they said they'd fixed it01:40
Ojzcrocmaybe i'll reboot the phone and try again01:40
JasonFeliceThe box stays ticked?  Are you sure you don't have network?01:40
Ojzcrocyep, i tried using the browser01:40
Ojzcrocsays it can't connect01:40
Ojzcroci'll reboot01:40

JasonFeliceOjzcroc: You're on build 100?02:11
JasonFeliceBy the way, I just wrote this: "Goodbye, iPhone" http://objvimmer.com/blog/2013/10/19/goodbye-iphone/02:12
OjzcrocI don't know how to check the build number02:15
Ojzcrocthe OS option under "about phones" in settings says "Ubuntu 13.10 (r100)"02:17
Ojzcrocnot sure if that's helpful02:17
JasonFeliceThat is... it's the same build I have.  And I have a Nexus 4, too.02:18
JasonFelicer100 is the build number.02:18
Ojzcrocok02:18
Ojzcrochttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-system-settings/+bug/123032002:18
ubot5Ubuntu bug 1230320 in ubuntu-system-settings (Ubuntu) "[wifi] doesn't ask for credentials to connect" [High,Fix released]02:18
OjzcrocI found this02:19
Ojzcrocbut it says the problem was fixed02:19
JasonFeliceThere's several different kinds of wifi authentication and encryption mechanisms.  I wonder if Ubuntu Touch doesn't support yours?02:19
JasonFeliceDo you have access to the wi-fi settings?02:20
OjzcrocWEP encryption02:20
Ojzcrocthat's what the router webpage says02:21
JasonFeliceHrmm.02:21
JasonFeliceWhat are the options?  Mine asked for WPA password.02:22
JasonFeliceI know WPA and WPA2 are authentication mechanisms.02:22
Ojzcrocwhat do you mean by options?02:23
JasonFeliceI just found this: "The Wi-Fi Alliance intended WPA as an intermediate measure to take the place of WEP pending the availability of the full IEEE 802.11i standard."02:23
Ojzcrochmm02:24
JasonFeliceSo, I guess WPA supersedes WEP, and WPA2 supersedes WPA.  So if you can configure your router for WPA, maybe it works?02:24
Ojzcrocmaybe02:24
Ojzcrocworth looking at02:24
JasonFeliceI'm completely just guessing, by the way.  I'm just starting to use Ubuntu Touch myself.02:25
OjzcrocI might ask the person who said they fixed the bug02:25
Ojzcrocalso, do you find that your keyboard won't work in landscape? or is that just me?02:26
JasonFeliceHow do I install QtTest?  And also make autopilot work?  Anyone?02:27
JasonFeliceOjzcroc: My keyboard works in landscape.02:33
Ojzcrocdamn.02:34
JasonFeliceMy biggest problems are apps hanging, the lock screen hanging.  I can usuall reboot it.02:34
JasonFeliceOjzcroc: English keyboard?02:35
yahooJasonFelice, are you on nexus 4 ?02:35
JasonFeliceYes02:35
yahoooh ! i thought only Gnex had problems02:35
yahooKeyboard has issues in terminal app. it wont show once closed.02:36
JasonFeliceThe apps hanging thing seems app-specific.  Just my intuition.02:36
JasonFeliceyahoo: I just saw that a little bit ago, but was able to wake it up.  Forget how.02:36
JasonFeliceThe lock screen happens if I swipe spastically to unlock it.02:37
yahooswipe lock screen towards left02:37
JasonFeliceI can get it into a slightly-unlocked state that freezes and not be able to unlock it.02:37
JasonFeliceLast time, I received a text, and whipped the phone out of my pocket and tried to swipe to unlock in one motion,02:37
JasonFeliceended up throwing my phone on the carpet and half-unlocking it.  Had to reboot.02:38
yahooIts dead slow on Gnex but i can still use.02:38

JasonFeliceI did some iPad games for Blue Frog Gaming.  We used a layer on top of OpenGL ES called Cocos2d, which was nice.03:17
JasonFeliceThough I'd love to write another game framework, because I don't see any that deal with state in a nice way.03:17
OjzcrocI reinstalled ubuntu touch, the wifi still won't work. I sent a message to the people who said they fixed the bug in build 89.03:28
OjzcrocI tried both the messaging app and the terminal app, neither work in landscape03:43

ghanashyamhi, is there a way to sync google contacts into ubuntu phone06:56
markohi06:58
ghanashyamhi07:12
ghanashyamping?07:12
ghanashyamis there any activity here?07:12
ghanashyamtrying to sync google contacts to ubuntu phone07:13
ghanashyamwanted help here07:13
nhainesghanashyam: use 'adb shell' to connect to your phone from your computer, then type 'su -iu phablet'07:22
nhainesThen, you'll type 'syncevolution --configure --sync-property "username=email@gmail.com" --sync-property "password=secret" Google_Contacts', filling in your contact info, of course.07:22
ghanashyammy device just crashed and not booting up again07:22
ghanashyamnot even into recovery07:22
nhainesThen just run 'syncevolution --sync one-way-from-server Google_Contacts addressbook' until it's finished syncing contacts.07:22
ghanashyammine's a galaxy nexus :) so figuring out hwo to get back nowo07:22
nhainesghanashyam: pull the battery, wait 5 seconds, replace the battery, and then hold the power button down for 4 seconds.  Should work. :)07:23
ghanashyam:) wow let me try that07:23
ghanashyamthere is a lot of slowness that i experienced with this ubuntu image07:24
ghanashyamkinda terrible07:24
ghanashyamother problem was with the keyboard layout07:24
ghanashyamdoesn't have $ etc keys07:24
ghanashyamhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/ReleaseNotes07:24
ghanashyamwill this solve the keyboard layout issue?07:24
nhainesghanashyam: the keyboard does have $ keys?07:26
nhainesghanashyam: what layout are you using?07:26
ghanashyami booted into ubuntu - and i checked that the $key isn't present07:26
ghanashyamon the keyboard07:26
nhainesIt is present.07:27
nhainesWhat layout are you using?07:27
ghanashyamhow do I change the settings for the keyboard07:27
ghanashyamno idea how that's accessed - Aaaaaaand it crashed again07:27
nhaineshttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/ReleaseNotes#Keyboard07:27
ghanashyami just did a google contact sync but turns out only a few contacts were synced up07:35
ghanashyamnot all07:35
ghanashyami could say not most07:35
ghanashyamfrom my previous phone list07:35

nhainesghanashyam: when I reread my instructions, I was less than clear about that--I assumed something from the instructions I was updating.07:52
nhainesSo sorry about that.07:52
ghanashyamso is it that it just picks up 50 contacts at once?07:53
nhainesYup.07:53
ghanashyamany way to reduce the font size :)07:54
ghanashyamits huge huge07:54
nhainesThey're all coded as part of the SDK.07:55
ghanashyamso we ll have to figure that out?07:57
ghanashyamand insert into that image?07:57
ghanashyamor is it available in the image?07:58
nhainesI expect that 1) it's in the Ubuntu QML themes and 2) changing it would break everything.07:58
ghanashyam:)07:59
ghanashyamsecondly how to i close running apps - is my phone real slow or may be the memory is being hogged?07:59
nhainesghanashyam: in the Applications Lens, long-press an app thumbnail, then tap the Close icon that appears.08:01
nhainesIt's probably just Mir being sluggish.  It clears up after a few minutes and stays pretty fast after that for the most part.08:01
ghanashyami wanted to install xda forum app that it suggest -and it redirects me to login to ubuntu accounts08:06
ghanashyamand it takes me to cellular08:06
ghanashyamwhy's that? so08:06

ghanashyamgreat suggestion:)08:21
OrokuSaki=)08:21
OrokuSakifound out the hard way myself08:21
tvossnhaines, ghanashyam for maguro specifically, we will land performance optimizations over the next week08:21
OrokuSakirelease a rom for people.. and.. oh hey.. systemd is using all the power.. neat08:22
tvosspoint is that the gpu driver is dated and does not support the hardware compositor 1.1 interfaces as defined by android08:22
nhainestvoss: that is good news.  :)08:22
OrokuSakihad to add accept4 to my kernel.. as I am on 2.6.3508:22
tvossogra_, you around? if so, I remember that you curated some changelogs for images in the past. Do you still do that?08:23
tvossnhaines and ghanashyam would be quite interested08:23
OrokuSakiOgra is not usually online during the weekend08:23
nhainesHmm, that's such a shame.  It runs beautifully in Android 4.3.  I'd have expected some sort of updates there (I know the Android kernel used for this project is older.)08:23
OrokuSakinhaines.. it should be possible to downgrade, no?08:24
OrokuSakiwith the sources08:24
nhainesOrokuSaki: downgrade what?08:24
OrokuSakiconfused nevermind.. thought your device was cm10.2 only... =)08:24
ghanashyamI think i will need to install Terminal app - or is it inbuilt?08:24
OrokuSakiit's built in08:25
nhainesghanashyam: where are you looking for applications?08:25
OrokuSakifind the carrot ^08:25
OrokuSakiby applications08:25
ghanashyamhome button08:25
nhainesThey're not there.08:25
ghanashyamthe ubuntu home and it shows just browser and gallery and stuff08:25
nhainesSwipe to the left (move right) to the Applications Lens.08:25
OrokuSakiswipe to the right where the click apps are08:25
OrokuSakior.. yeah08:25
tvossnhaines, it's less about the kernel, more about the specifics of the graphics driver. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with it, just that we need to optimize for its specifics08:26
OrokuSakiWish the codecs were working...08:26
OrokuSakiSooo want to watch a video08:26
nhainestvoss: Well, I'm glad you guys are doing that.  I know it doesn't scale.08:26
OrokuSakiI noticed.. 14.04 started08:27
OrokuSaki*trusty*08:27
tvossnhaines, scale as in optimizing for every single gpu? yes, fully agreed. But maguro is still an interesting device, so let's see08:27
ghanashyamgot it - but does it just list08:27
ghanashyami did a" search" from the left top08:27
ghanashyamsearch bar once i was in applications08:27
nhainestvoss: I can only troubleshoot and report bugs.  So I'm happy for all the development work done for it.  :)08:27

nhainesReminds me, I need to file a bug against Terminal for its default directory.08:29
ghanashyamis there an Applications window where it lists all the applications?08:29
nhainesghanashyam: yes, the Applications Lens.  It works exactly like Ubuntu 13.10 on your desktop.08:29
OrokuSakiI have to edit a qml file for the keyboard to be correct... for the terminal.. I have to take it out of side stage08:30
OrokuSakiand I am pretty sure my device thinks I am a phone.. as unity seems to be chosing the phone background08:30
OrokuSakiguess I should grep for form_factor or something08:31
ghanashyami am still not sure about the keyboard layount08:32
ghanashyamit doesn't include the $08:32
nhainesghanashyam: yes it does.08:32

tarelerulzWhat is the  phone Gyula ?09:48
Gyulagalaxy nexus09:48
nhainesghanashyam: Not sure.  You'll have to see what build you're on.09:48
nhainesGyula: it means be patient, because it's sending the files, just as it says in your terminal window.09:49
Gyulabut is looks like no problem, now i see the android bot :)09:49
nhainesghanashyam: The on-phone updater only updates to images that have been verified as working and stable by Ubuntu developers.09:49

nhainesGyula: great.  :)09:50
Gyulanhaines: yes :)09:50
ghanashyamthere's no problem09:50

nhainesThat's the answer anyway.09:51
nhainesRun 'adb shell system-image-cli -i' and check what build you're on.09:51
ghanashyambut why would it show no software available09:52
ghanashyamif r101 is available?09:52
nhainesI can think of lots of reasons.09:52
ghanashyamso can't i force it to r101?09:52
nhainesBut we don't even know what you're running on your phone and you refuse to check.  :P09:52
ghanashyamthe About Phone shows r10009:52
ghanashyami did check09:53
ghanashyamand it doesnt update09:53
ghanashyami am still on r100 (13.10)09:53
nhainesghanashyam: well, you can always try -c devel-proposed, I guess.09:54
nhainesIt'll save everything except your timezone and installed apps.  'phablet-flash ubuntu-system -c devel-proposed'09:54
ghanashyamummm09:54
ghanashyamlet me try that right away09:55
ghanashyamhopefully it won't ruin my sycned contacts :)09:56
nhainesNope, saves those.  :)  And if it didn't, at least now know you know how.  :)09:58
tarelerulzDo you have to sync from a  file or can you use  Google?09:58
nhainesI should probably find a dull fork and fight someone at Canonical to update the Release Notes.09:58
tarelerulzhave any of you used it on a Tablet?09:59
nhainestvoss: are you still around?  Can we get some Google contact sync info in the release notes if I write the steps?  The blog post linked to is out of date.09:59
Gyulamay i ask something? How can I use my galaxy nexus (after install :) ) like a desktop on my monitor?10:05
Gyulaaprox. how log is this install?10:09

nhainesGyula: desktop mode (also known as "convergence") has not been developed and is planned for Ubuntu 14.04 or 14.10.10:17
Gyulaouch :(10:18
tarelerulzCan you sync your contracts from Google?10:18
nhainestarelerulz: yes, using the instructions in the release notes.10:18
OrokuSakiAny reason why grouper and manta haven't had a report lately? http://reports.qa.ubuntu.com/smokeng/10:19
nhainesOrokuSaki: they're not the target for Ubuntu 13.10, I imagine.10:21
GyulaERROR:phablet-flash:Installation is taking too long or an error occured along the way. :/ Now what can i do?10:21
nhainesGyula: just wait for the update to finish.  It should still be fine.10:22
Gyulaon the phone i see Ubuntu update complete.10:22
OrokuSakiI thought you guys targeted 4 devices? manta, grouper, mako and maguro10:23
OrokuSakigrouper is the nexus 710:23
Gyulanhaines: on the phone Ubuntu update complete. and a question  ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix? this cannot be undone.. and there is a lot of no answer and one yes disable recovery andf a go back10:24
Gyulai choosed yes... now it is rebooting :)10:27

melvsteris it possible to write an app for your phone without putting it through the market place?10:38
w-flomelvster, yes, but I think it's only possible via command line right now10:39
melvsterw-flo: ok thanks10:40
w-flosomething like "pkcon local-install filename.click" as the phablet user IIRC10:40
w-floor rather install-local... whatever :)10:40
Gyulaanyone can say something good for me? :(10:42
w-floGyula, flashing your device failed? are you sure recovery doesn't work anymore? if so, I think the correct thing to do is using fastboot to reflash the recovery. Don't take my word on it though10:43

melvsterwhen i run a terminal ... some keys on the keyboard dont press ... is that a known bug, or is it just me?10:46
Gyulaw-flow: I let my phone charging for a while, then a removed the usb cable, and the battery, then i put it back and it is working :) I see ubuntu phone.. it is a little bit slow, and new for me but i keep trying to know it better :)10:55

melvsterw-flo: i got net11:14

melvsteri have recent apps / installed / dash plugins11:17
w-flomelvster, wait.. same for me11:17

gregoryfentonHi all, installing ubuntu on galaxy nexus. How long should it take at the "waiting for install to finish on device" stage?11:43
gregoryfentonThe answer is "slightly longer than you had patience for", it just moved to the next step :P11:45
tarelerulzTo someone who is not into Linux , Why would you tell them to chose Ubuntu touch11:52
gregoryfentonWouldn't you be better showing them ubuntu touch and getting the feel of it, if they like it then they have done the job for you :)11:54
melvstertarelerulz: it's a better UX with all the edges of the screen used ... ive shown mine to non linux people and they like it11:55
melvsterof course it let's you have complete control of your device too ... and does not track you11:55
tarelerulzThat is cool point for me.  I rock Ubuntu on my computer and rock Android roms and now stock on note 3.   For the normal person11:56
melvstertarelerulz: one other feature people seem to love is that you can have your phone and desktop the same OS, so you'll be able to dock your phone one day and you wont need a home PC11:57
tarelerulzThat is cool feature.  That is one Android is missing for sure.11:58
melvsterphone / desktop / tablet / tv / server etc.11:58
melvsterlaptop11:58
melvsterin 1-2 years phones will be as powerful as laptops11:59
tarelerulzI  was at an at&t store and looking at the windows Tablet.  I asked if they sale well and the guy said not at all.11:59
melvsteri wanna get a nexus 7 and 10 and put touch on it12:00
tarelerulzIt seem like most people don't care if they can do more .   Android and Iso don't do as much as full pc.  The hardware don't limit this .12:01
tarelerulzTo me it realizing different uses.  A mobile computer is not used the same as  Desktop or laptop.  I think Ubuntu see that mobile is what people are going to be use  so make the os for mobile device12:05
nukleuzHi! Installed the new release on my Galaxy Nexus (takju, gsm). It's still lagging a lot. Almost useless when 2-3 programs running in the background. Is this normal?12:07
gregoryfentonsame for me nukleuz. Does your camera app flash when you use it?12:09

=== successus__ is now known as successus
nukleuzgregoryfenton: Yes, it does flash. Several times.12:25
nhainesnukleuz: it's normal.  Over the next week, they'll be improving performance on the Galaxy Nexus (the codename is actually maguro).12:26
nukleuzCould it be the bugs in MIR, which could be solved? Or is just «the nexus» to old and slow for this software? :p12:26
nhainesYou can install build r101 from System Settings > Update now.12:26
nukleuzI know its maguro, but takju is the GSM, and yakju (CDMA) i think?12:27
nhainesMir isn't spelled MIR, and the issue isn't bugs in Mir, it's driver performance issues on maguro.12:27
nhainesCorrect, but takju/yakju doesn't have a performance difference on Ubuntu 13.10.12:27
nhainesmelvster: when you build a click app, you can install it on the phone using 'click install foobar'12:29
nhainesGuest72756: mobile data works fine on maguro, but it doesn't switch back on when a wifi connection drops.  I've been able to get it working again by turning off wifi and then turning off celluar data and turning it back on again.12:31

You can make the filesystem read/write using adb shell touch /userdata/.writable_image and then adb reboot. nhainesnik90: and there's already been one stable official release since 13.10 (r100).20:35
nhainesmelvster: the precise long-term nature of updates should be more defined by the time 14.04 LTS releases, but since it's all image based, they do nightly builds on foobar-proposed and then promote builds that pass all the automated tests every couple of days on foobar.20:36
melvsternhaines: awesome!20:37
nhainesFor example, everyone's on saucy, and saucy-proposed is still getting updates that eventually make their way to the saucy channel.20:37
nhainesmelvster: this upcoming week should see a lot of performance improvements for maguro.  So that's good for me....20:38
cenorhey guys20:38
nhaineshey, cenor.20:39
cenori got a problem with the data connection20:39
melvsternhaines: ah cool, i think i run mako on my nexus 420:39
cenorwanted to follow this guide: https://plus.google.com/100264483712374857174/posts/3o1tjYo9Ghx20:39
cenorbut somehow i just can't save the mobile broadband connection20:39
nhainesmelvster: your Nexus 4 *is* mako.  :)20:41
cenordoes someone know a solution?20:41
nhainescenor: no, because we don't have any useful information from you yet.  It *should* "just work".20:41
nhainescenor: So, what phone are you using, and what is your carrier?  :)20:41
nhaines(Also, nothing on that page will work anymore.)20:42
tempnexusHi. I'm having a problem when manually installing ubuntu touch on a Galaxy nexus. When installing saucy-preinstalled-touch-armhf.zip i get E: Error in tmp/update.zip (Status 0)20:42
tempnexusany ideas here?20:43
nhainestempnexus: try using the phablet-flash tool.20:43
tempnexusnhaines: unfortunately i don't think i can in mac os x20:43
cenornhaines: the phone is flashing right now, it's a nex 4, but that should not affect my problem. it's about the guide in the link i sent. It says there I should add a mobile broadband connection ( on my Desktop Ubuntu) and then copy the file to my phone20:44
cenorbut i cannot create such a mobile broadband connection20:44
nhainestempnexus: actually, I think you can, because it's in python.  :)  But in that case, make sure you're booted into recovery, and if you have trouble it might be easier to burn an Ubuntu 13.10 DVD and just install from the live session.20:44
nhainescenor: 1) of course the phone affects your problem--many phones do not have working radio stacks, 2) nothing on that page works anymore, so I guarantee it will not fix your problem.20:45
tempnexusnhaines: ohh, then i'll search for the phablet-flash tool. I am definitely in recovery mode. Indeed, as the galaxy nexus doesn't have an sdcard, i'm pushing the 2 zip files through "adb sideload"20:45
nhainestempnexus: well that's your problem.  Don't do that.20:46
tempnexusnhaines: i cannot see any other way to do it. if i push the file through adb, and then reboot in recovery again, the autoupdate.zip is not there anymore20:46
tempnexusnhaines: how could i do it then?20:46
nhainestempnexus: the file still needs to be in /sdcard, which is not pointing to a physical SD card on maguro or mako.  It's a symlink.20:48
FabianCookHey guys, is there any official list of things that should be worked on?20:48
cenornhaines: ahm on what page ?20:48
tempnexusnhaines: If i do "adb push xxx.zip /sdcard/autoaupdate.zip" and afterwards "adb shell ls /sdcard/" the file is there. but it's not there after "adb reboot recovery"20:49
tempnexusnhaines: so the phones says autoupdate.zip not found20:49
nhainescenor: https://plus.google.com/100264483712374857174/posts/3o1tjYo9Ghx doesn't work.20:50
nhainescenor: it worked when it was written, but hasn't worked since July.20:50
cenornhaines: hmm i remember doing it another way. but doesnt matter. just saw that it is working20:51
cenornot the tut on the site but just so20:51
cenornhaines: btw, on the official page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/ReleaseNotes it says one should use that post ;)20:52
nhainescenor: yes, but it is wrong.  Can't get anyone to change it, though.20:52
cenorah20:53
FabianCookNo one wishes to reply to me? xD20:53
nhainescenor: I'm glad it's working.  Ubuntu doesn't seem to notice when a wifi connection goes down, and doesn't switch back to cellular data automatically.  A reboot (or turnning off wifi, then cellular data, then turning celluar data back on in System Settings) seems to work.20:53
D4rkSilverFabianCook: nope20:53
FabianCookGood good20:53
tempnexusnhaines: sorry, i meant autodeploy.zip. after a reboot, that file is gone from /sdcard/ or /data/media20:53
nhainesFabianCook: there's always https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-touch-preview   :)20:54
cenornhaines: seriously? :D20:54
cenorhahaha20:54
nhainescenor: yeah, it kept popping up after being fixed.  :)20:54
FabianCooknhaines, thats what I wanted, thanks20:55
FabianCooknhaines, didn't even think to look there20:55
nhainesFabianCook: :)20:55
nhainestempnexus: I don't think it's supposed to be there after you reboot.  It's supposed to be deployed and then deleted.20:55
FabianCooknhaines, Im just about to install it on my old gnexus and I have a few days off so I thought I would start out with something useful20:56
cenornhaines: developer?20:56
nik90FabianCook: you can help with reporting bugs or better help with the core apps such as calendar, clock, music which is all developed by the community20:56
FabianCooknik90, that sounds reasonable.20:57
nik90FabianCook: if you are comfortable with qml and javascript there are lot of things you can help out with in the core apps20:57
nhainescenor: I'm not a developer, I've just been testing heavily for about a month, and keeping up with the dev mailing list.20:57
nik90FabianCook: take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/CoreApps. It lists all the core apps20:58
FabianCooknik90, every real developer should be good at js, I am rather good at it however, understand it properly, I work with node a lot which helps.20:58
nik90FabianCook: I am one the developer of the clock app and we can always use help.20:58
nhainesFabianCook: I don't know js at all.  :P  Although I'm almost tempted to learn, what with the SDK and all.20:58
nik90FabianCook: well javascript is more supplementary...we create the UI using QML.20:59
nik90In the link I pasted above, you can find links to launchpad projects. Take a look at the code and see if you can help out with that20:59
FabianCookI hadn't even looked into ubuntu touch until today, well not the actual development side at least, ive been meaning to for a while however, was just waiting till I get a new phone before I can get rid of the gnexus as my main21:00
nhainesnik90: This reminds me I should submit a certain website as a webapp.21:00
nhainesFabianCook: good idea.  :)  It runs quite nicely as a phone, but there is a definite lack of apps.21:00
FabianCooknhaines, thats why I was waiting, I didn't want my main to crap out on me (not saying it will with ubuntu touch, just that I would rather android on it)21:01
FabianCookI am a Android developer by profession so I am use to mobile development as well21:01
nik90FabianCook: the ubuntu touch is more mainly for developers and early testers. I just started using it as my main phone and I miss certain things such as gmail, Whatsapp etc. But the basic stuff like making/receiving calls, sms, camera, music works21:02
* nik90 wishes someone makes an email app like gmail or something21:02
FabianCooknik90, Good good, I have a S4 as my main so I am not worrying about features not working atm.21:02
FabianCooknik90, sounds like something interesting to work on21:03
nik90FabianCook: glad...let me know if you need more info on what to work on.21:03
FabianCooknik90, Well, what urgent things need to be done? I would rather do functional things, but I am quite fine with UI21:04
nik90FabianCook: depends on which project you want work on. There are several core apps like clock, calendar, calculator, music, rss reader being worked on now by the community. So its up to you which project you want to work on. I can then point you to the right people21:05
nik90FabianCook: we just had the 13.10 release..we will soon be getting new designs for these apps. So they all need help :)21:06
FabianCooknik90, hmm. I honestly don't know what I want to work on.21:07
nik90haha21:07
FabianCooknik90, I have been working with database helpers on Android recently, are there any helpers out there yet? Feel like working on Datastorage xD21:08
nik90FabianCook: are you familiar with sqlite storage? Like providing the ability to upgrade databases without losing user data?21:09
nik90that's what we use for local storage of data atm21:10
FabianCookHold up, I shall get you a link to my work.21:10
FabianCooknik90, internet is being a bit slow, think I might move it all down stairs next to the fiber soon.21:12
nik90no worries21:12
FabianCookhttps://bitbucket.org/FabianCCook/dbhelper21:12
FabianCookIts all SQLite, a bit of an entity framework, still working on it.21:13
=== makimac|afk is now known as makimac
FabianCooknik90, so no one has really worked on databases yet?21:15
nik90nice..yeah we do something similar with SQLite. We (atleast for the clock app) have resorted to functions which create database and then push data to it21:15
nik90FabianCook: no all core apps make use of sqlite storage extensively21:16
FabianCooknik90, Ahh I see, I guess not then.21:16
nhainesI always love when I post to Reddit, then wake up and my comment karma is much higher and I have 6 replies in my inbox.  I can never remember if I was trolling or being helpful.  :)21:16
nik90FabianCook: if you want you can take a look at the database used by the clock. I am sure it could use your experience improving it.21:17
nik90nhaines: lol21:17
nik90FabianCook: We need an easy way to upgrade the database without disrupting user data. I am not familiar with it and hence am frequently breaking it :)21:18
FabianCookHmm. Okay. I shall have a look into it then. Are you dropping the tables or something? xD21:18
FabianCooknik90, What version of SQLite is included?21:19
FabianCook3?21:19
nik90FabianCook: we use the one provided by QT QML http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-5.0/qtquick/qmlmodule-qtquick-localstorage2-qtquick-localstorage-2.html21:19
nik90FabianCook: one example of our usage can be seen at http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-clock-dev/ubuntu-clock-app/trunk/view/head:/clock/WorldClockModel.qml21:22
FabianCook-afk- Reading about sqlite in qt21:22
FabianCooknik90, Just a note, I wouldn't use real to store coordinates...21:23
nik90FabianCook: see stuff like that :P could do an improvemnet21:24
FabianCookMy job is based around location ;)21:25
FabianCooknik90, In SQLite when selecting a real number it seems to only select a few decimal places.21:25
FabianCookBecause sqlite doesn't have things like spatial indexes it should be perfectly fine to store it as TEXT21:26
nik90FabianCook: wouldn't latitude and longitude be accurate within a few decimal points?21:26
FabianCooknik90, Yes, but when storing it you can loose the accuracy21:26
FabianCookIll find you an example21:27
nik90FabianCook: okay21:27
FabianCookThis is what happens http://i.imgur.com/cWp7D6D.jpg21:28
nik90ah21:28
zandm7Hey guys so I have a question regarding Ubuntu Touch on devices besides the Nexuses21:29
FabianCookyou want what ever accuracy the phone spits out21:29
zandm7"Development" for Ubuntu Touch on my device (Xperia T) has been stagnant for awhile now but on the dev thread for it the installation instructions just have you flash a version of CM 10.1 and then a really old version of Ubuntu Touch from the cdimage website.21:30
=== jono is now known as Guest72545
zandm7Would I be able to test Ubuntu on my phone by flashing the latest CM 10.1 and then the latest "saucy" build of Ubuntu Touch Preview from the cdimage site?21:31
nik90FabianCook: if you want you can submit that as your first fix. otherwise I will fix it after I am done with some stuff I am working on now21:31
w-flozandm7, I think you can't do that with "flipped" images21:31
w-flozandm7, the most recent "unflipped" image is from july IIRC21:32
melvsterhmmm i wonder how can i tell if openssh is running on my phablet?21:32
zandm7What is "flipped" and "unflipped"? Sorry I'm kind of a total noob haha :P21:32
w-flozandm7, "unflipped" => what your described, booting into CM/Android and then starting ubuntu on top of it. "flipped" is the other way round, so the device boots into ubuntu and then starts a few android services (for drivers etc.) inside a container21:33
nhainesFabianCook: that image gave me a chuckle.  :)21:33
FabianCooknhaines,  Why is this?21:33
zandm7How can I tell if an image is flipped or not?21:34
zandm7Thanks btw21:34
melvsterim getting 'port 22: No route to host' when trying to ssh ... could it be the openssh isnt running?21:34
nhainesFabianCook: I've known one or two people for which I would say they wouldn't notice the loss in accuracy on that chart.  ;)21:34
nhainesmelvster: it's not runnong by default.21:35
w-flozandm7, any recent image will be flipped.. because unflipped was deprecated a long time ago. those are the only unflipped images available: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/21:35
melvsternhaines: im following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/ReleaseNotes21:35
zandm7So this one: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/saucy-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip is flipped?21:35
FabianCooknhaines, Haha. Yeah, I was going to put a kinda bubble around it to show the real accuracy, but couldn't be bothered and fixed it instead21:35
melvsteri did both of 'sudo apt-get install openssh-server and sudo apt-get install ssh'21:35
zandm7Oh wait that one IS from July.21:36
w-flozandm7, everything in "ubuntu-touch-preview" is unflipped (i.e. booting into CM first, then starts ubuntu)21:36
nhainesmelvster: it's out of date.21:36
melvsternhaines: oh thanks, do i need to run service start or something?21:36
zandm7Ah. But it is still saucy-based. Is it really deprecated?21:37
nhainesmelvster: because the system is read-only, they installed it but don't activate it.  I think there's a magic file you can touch (like to run Mir or not) that starts it.21:37
nhainesmelvster: it might be easier to run the Ubuntu SDK and activate developer mode.21:37
melvsternhaines: i already touched the magic file21:37
melvsternhaines: 'adb shell touch /userdata/.writable_image and then adb reboot'21:38
melvsteroh ok i can do that21:38
w-flozandm7, you won't see any updates for those images21:39
nhainesmelvster: that's not the magic file for SSH.21:40
melvsteroh ok21:40
zandm7w-flo OK I see.21:41
zandm7What kind of functionality is on the latest unflipped build?21:42
w-flozandm7, hmmm.. I don't remember, really. A lot of things have changed since then.. I think they have no click apps, for example (so only preinstalled apps working)21:42
zandm7Huh. So is it worth testing or no, in your opinion?21:43
nhainesNot at all.21:43
w-flozandm7, nope :)21:43
melvsternhaines: perhaps /etc/init/ssh.override21:44
zandm7Haha.21:44
melvsterhttps://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-phone/msg04092.html21:44
zandm7I have another question then: Currently, on the cdimage site, assuming the non-deprecated branch is /ubuntu-touch/, there are no "generic" builds available, only ones for specific devices (mako, grouper, etc.) So how is device-specific development for Ubuntu Touch going to work from here on out? For devices that aren't officially supported, that is.21:45
nhaineszandm7: If someone commits to building the images and keeps them up to date, they're registered with Ubuntu and then 'phablet-flash community' works.21:47
zandm7OK I see, thanks nhaines!21:48
w-flozandm7, the zips for community-maintained devices are hosted all over the internet, like google drive, dropbox, ubuntu one and other share hosters21:48
zandm7Thanks w-flo21:48

=== jalcine is now known as jalcine_
Ferdi have a quick question.. can I install whatsapp on ubuntu?21:54
w-floFerd, no :(21:55
nickwgquestion: my while running the install command, which device connected, usb debugging on, etc, it downloads the image, then tries to reboot the phone, and it goes into the recovery menu, and terminal says waiting for device... is this normal?21:57
Ferd:( shieeeet.. I've searched on google to find an answer but found nothing and on the ubuntu.com/phone/ubuntu-for-android website is a whatsapp icon on the picture.. that confused me a little21:57
w-flonickwg, yes :) don't touch it21:58
nickwgoh ok21:58
nickwghow long does this usually take?  and my phone says fastboot usb, thats good right?21:58
w-floFerd, I think ubuntu for android is not the same as ubuntu touch21:58
w-flonickwg, depends on your hardware.. a few minutes at least, and it might take longer21:58
nickwgso if i have an htc sensation21:59
FabianCookI think my mission today is to get some DbHelpers written for QML21:59
nickwgi know its not supported, but i wanted to see if it would work, then i could work off that to make it more usable21:59
nickwgw-flo, i think ubuntu for android evolved into ubuntu touch22:00
w-flonickwg, most likely (I'd say 99.99% :D) it won't work22:00
FabianCookAnyone wish for a "SharedPreferences" like datastorage option?22:00
nickwgat what point wont it work, do you think?  I know, dragunkorr made an image, back in march, is there a way to use that and update it to all the changes, maybe?22:01
FerdOh, thanks22:01
FabianCooknik90, would a simple XML store be more helpful for the clock?22:01
w-flonickwg, porting is not the easiest task, you'd have to do a lot of modifications22:02
w-flonickwg, even experienced canonical engineers encounter issues when trying to make things work on a selection of 4 devices.. so.. unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time learning things and watching things break, I can't recommend that22:04
nickwgi know, i looked at the porting page.  i was attempting it myself, but got lost, at the breakfast stage.  It wasn't running the command, further investigation showed it was used when porting CM.  I have CM on my phone lready, that swhat i use, i was kinda hoping that would help... i really really love ubuntu touch and cant wait to use it, so i thought id try tonight to get it somewhat working on my phone22:05
nickwgw-flo, its still sitting in the recovery menu :(22:06
w-flonickwg, it won't work :|22:08
nickwgwhat if i install it manually?22:09
nickwgit sucks having to rely on others to port it... i program php, mysql, html and graphics and whatnot... android portnig is not my thing :(22:09
melvsteranyone know how to run qtcreator apps on the touch?22:15
melvsterthe docs say22:15
melvsterStart Qt Creator from the Dash, and select the new Devices tab22:15
melvsterPress the Enable button to activate Developer Mode22:15
melvsterbut i cant find that option22:15
melvsterthere's a devices inside options, but no enable there22:15
nhainesmelvster: yes, I think that's the one.22:17
FabianCooknik90, nhaines, this is where it will be: https://github.com/FabianCook/UTouchDbHelper22:17
nhainesFabianCook: great!  :)22:19

FabianCooktbh22:22
FabianCooknhaines, nik90, changed it before I did to much on it https://github.com/FabianCook/UTouchStorage22:24

zhanxnot sure where to start23:01
wilee-nileezhanx, There is touch and the saucy install as well.23:01
zhanxlink?23:01
zhanxi am not finding them with my crappy google fu today23:01
wilee-nileetake a look at the links above not sure though myself on your actual device23:01
zhanxnot listed, so i am waiting on asus support to see if i can get an unlock apk for the device, to go from there23:02
zhanxwill need to setup a build enviro for the tablet and build the image of course but, porting is not my strong point23:03
