sisterFisterhey not sure if it was posted before because i got disconnected.00:06
sisterFisterso I installed knapshot to get a screenshot. Print sc key didn't seem to be auto saving to anywhere. Anyway any insight as to why my terminal letter spacing looks this way? http://imgur.com/085KN3r    I'm using Lubuntu by the way.00:06
sisterFistersolved it. Thank you :D00:08
sisterFisterAnyone know how to set global keybindings in lubuntu?00:11
* ianorlin wasn't sure that was working00:39
ianorlinthe keybinding would be in ~/.config/openbox and be the lubuntu-rc.xml00:42

ZenGeisthi all, is it safe to upgrade lubuntu to 13.10 from 13.04?12:44
leszekI did an upgrade on my virtual machine which worked just fine. But it really depends if you are having tons of ppas activated and different software installed though12:46

lummoshello is the official lubuntu channel?16:43

lummosthanks. it's not well documented where to find it.16:44
wxlhttp://lubuntu.net/tags/irc16:45
holsteinlummos: how can we officially help you?16:45
lummoswxl: yea you would think the word freenode would appear on that page somewhere :-)16:45
lummosholstein: still experimenting with lubuntu: nothing broken yet! :-)16:46
holsteinlummos: what page?16:46
holsteinlummos: is that why you are here? you want us to update a link or documentation?16:46
lummosno i am fine, i was just looking for the official IRC16:46
lummosit was hard to find, that's all16:47
lummosholstein: but now you mention it, you probably might want to add a link to this channel at the page wxl linked. it's also where google takes you to if you look for this channel.16:48
wxlit's where google MAY take you16:49
wxldepending on how it has profiled you16:49
holsteinlummos: i'll mention it.. thanks16:51
zanzacarHello everyone. I recently installed Lubuntu on my mothers computer. Everything was going great compared to winXP that she had installed. That being said she clicked to upgrade to the new version and it upgraded her to Ubuntu. Which I thought was odd. Is this standard? I am guessing I will have to let her know not to upgrade or something.17:09
zanzacarIs there anyway of just going from Ubuntu back to Lubuntu without too much hassle? It is a new installation.17:09
zanzacarSo really no reason I couldn't just install Lubuntu (new version) and move forwar17:09
holsteinzanzacar: i typically do the upgrades manually for other users17:09
holsteinzanzacar: lubuntu *is* ubuntu, so, in theory, its going to be easy-ish for you to change it back to lubuntu17:10
zanzacarholstein: right which is what I figured but I wasn't sure. I think I will have to do the upgrading for her and just let her do the updates.17:10
lummoszanzacar: from ububtu i can say you should in theory be able to 'apt-get install lubuntu-desktop' but i dont know whether that's a full lubuntu or not17:10
lummosnor do I know what ubuntu added when it installed17:11
holstein!info lubuntu-desktop17:11
ubottulubuntu-desktop (source: lubuntu-meta): Lubuntu Desktop environment. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.52 (saucy), package size 2 kB, installed size 31 kB (Only available for i386; amd64; powerpc; armhf)17:11
holsteinshould be that easy.. and it could be that LXDE is there, and it can be selected at login17:11
holsteini would just check from the login manager and see that the lxde or lubuntu session isnt there already17:12
zanzacarI guess that is a good point. I can't do much remotely so I will be going over there sometime soon.17:14
zanzacarIf all else fails I can always just go back to a fresh install.17:14
holsteinzanzacar: i disable the popup nags and everything.. i only upgrade when im there17:14
lummosyou might have to switch the applications back - nautilus to pcman or something17:14
zanzacarI will have to look for the upgrade popup/nag button and just let her update the software as occurs.17:14
lummosi am really liking pcman actually17:15
lummosit doesn't seem to treat the desktop the same as a pcman window17:18
zanzacarits amazing the difference between lubuntu and ubuntu. My mom said her computer wont even load or anything unless it takes several hours or something.17:18
ianorlinit still draws the desktop though17:18
zanzacarI mean its an old computer, but lubuntu works just great.17:18
lummosi have a script in a folder in pcman, i can click it and it asks if i wish to run or view it. on the desktop it doesn.t17:19
holsteinzanzacar: its likely the 3d dependency of unity17:19
lummosthere's a setting somewhere?17:19
lummosi agree, ubuntu's DE needs 3d acceleration now17:19
lummosYea there is something weird about the behaviour of icons in the desktop, it's not the same as in PCMan17:23
lummosgoing to upgrade - remembering zanzacar's case, i hope i don't get ubuntu! :-)17:24
holsteinlummos: it doesnt take over the desktop like nautilus for example17:24
zanzacarI am have tempted to install the older vsion of lubuntu and try and figure out how to upgrade just lubuntu and not everything. either that or I need to just never upgrade, or figure out whats changed by the upgrade and revert it back. who knows.17:25
zanzacarThanks for your help though.17:25
lummoszanzacar: did you install it as lubuntu, or as ubuntu then switch it?17:26
=== Soul-Sing is now known as ZoZie
holsteinzanzacar: for users like that, i make sure its easy to reinstall.. keeping good backups easily, or just using cloud services17:27
holsteinzanzacar: fact is, you dont know what mom clicked on, or why..17:27
zanzacarlummos: I had installed it as lubuntu. she upgraded it and it went over to lubuntu.17:30
zanzacarholstein: ya I think I will have to do that. Not sure what I am going to do as far as backups but I will figure it out soon enough. Maybe just have all the file stored on a seperate HDD.17:30
lummosthis remind me PCMan doesn't seem to support the Ubuntuone extensions. I don't really think that's a bug though.17:31
holsteinzanzacar: if they arent on some seperate location, the they are not backed up at all17:31
zanzacarholstein: this is true, but I really don't want to spend the money on seperate location storage etc.17:31
lummoshow much data are we talking about? i assume therefore it won't fit n a usb stick?17:32
holsteinzanzacar: i suggested nothing that costs anything17:33
holsteinzanzacar: dropbox is free.. other "cloud" services are free to a certain size... ubuntuone, etc17:33
holsteinmy only point is, make sure failure is an option, no matter what OS or user, then you wont be surprised or caught off guard.. this can cost anything from free to anything17:37
lummosit's very good advice17:38
zanzacarright it is good advice I might look into dropbox or ubuntuone. I didn't realize it was free to a certain size. I am not sure how much size they have.17:39
lummossolely in my opinion, dropbox is better as they support file versioning. As well as recovering deleted files, you can recover the last (i think 10) versions, in case you mess up a document edit. they both have windows and linux clients that will automatically synchronise to the web.17:40
zanzacarI will have to look into that option then. I think mainly just has some pictures and what not but it would be a good idea to store them off site.17:41
holsteinthe "best" will be what works for the user.. you have to think of what mom will do at this point17:41
zanzacarI am not sure the size I could also have it sync over to my own server but I don't have infinite size myself17:41
zanzacarI am thinking I should just manage the backup myself and not have her be a part of it. I am sure they can have everything run in the background from the user.17:43
holsteinas long as its working.. if its on a schedule, and she leaves the machine off.. or, if it does it on startup, and kills the performance.. who knows.. thats up to you and mom17:44
lummosurgh, steam giving me errors installing17:54
lummosok for some reason my system locale was wrong, don't know why. fixed now.17:57
zanzacarholstein: ya I will just have to figure it out with my mother.18:01
FukUmisthow do you conduct a minimal install with very low ram?18:16
holstein!minimal18:16
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD18:16
holsteinthen, add what you want..18:16
