[00:56] Hello, I have an old ibm x41. I had ubuntu 13.10 on it and my audio worked fine. System was slow so I intsalled lubumtu and over wrote everything. Now my sound doesn't work at all. any ideas? [01:04] !sound | stevieg [01:04] stevieg: If you're having problems with sound, click the Volume applet, then Sound Preferences, and check your Volume, Hardware, Input, and Output settings. If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files, see !players and !mp3. [01:04] i would open a terminal and run "aplay -l" and look for the sound device, the i would run "alsamixer" and trust no labels, tweaking everything [01:07] I will give that a try, thank you [04:32] i'm trying to resurrect an old dell 2400 for a senior citizen who only wants to surf a few websites...however, the onboard graphics are very buggy on linux and flash (i.e. youtube) is unwatchable. so i want to buy a refurb card for it, but am not sure about compatibility. how does someone know definitively if something is compatible in these situations with older hardware? specifically, i'd like to know if this c [04:32] minitube? [04:33] for youtube if flash isn't work [04:34] ianorlin: interesting...never heard of that app [04:34] but this system will be going to someone else...an older person who's probably going to want to watch youtube on a browser [04:35] and browse the web which is full of flash [04:35] DevZero: Let me guess, purple and green and wrong shape? [04:35] would rather just buy a card and forget about it [04:35] Unit193: yes exactly [04:36] http://paste.openstack.org/show/dTlOS3fXHicAmVG9hyuo as /etc/X11/xorg.conf or you can just get the new card. :) [04:37] Unit193: the solution is simple as that, huh? [04:37] DevZero: Your card is getting set to 16bit color, flash doesn't know how to handle that. [04:38] Unit193: it's not even a card, it's just the crappy onboard graphics, but i get your point [04:38] i'll probably opt for getting a card, but that's good information to know [04:39] Unit193: do you think the card in my link will work with the mobo? [04:40] DevZero: There was no link, you were cut off at "i'd like to know if this " [04:40] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130773 [04:40] if there is even a slot [04:40] ianorlin: lol...yeah...three, in fact [04:42] ianorlin: in case you're curious: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-2400_service%20manual_en-us.pdf [04:43] tech specs should be on pg 28 === mati75_ is now known as mati75 === MrGarlic_ is now known as MrGarlic [14:29] Hey people; How's it going? [14:31] I'm having a bit of a problem with my camera; Is this the place to get assistance? [14:34] YaMoonSun, Shoot it oit [14:34] s/oit/out [14:35] Gotcha mate; It's a lifecam-5000, and I can't get the audio to work on tinychat. The video is fine. If I enable both I get neither. [14:37] Audio and video are two different drivers [14:37] btw, you are able to play music right? [14:39] Just.. In general? I have yet to download an mp3. I'm watching a video though, and the audio's coming in just fine. [14:40] The audio and video are coming from the same device though; I was surprised that Linux detected the cam at all [14:40] Better something than nothing [14:40] Okay... What version of java are you having? [14:42] Just wondering whether it is a Java or a browser issue [14:42] I'm.. Unaware. I may have failed to install it, but if so I have no idea how Tinychat is funtioning. [14:42] Using the latest firefox [14:42] Java wasn't installed manually, so if it's not built in, I don't have it. [14:43] They offered me a taz file and I need a deb [14:43] you can check the version by running java -version in terminal [14:43] k [14:43] I don't think i have it, lol [14:44] hehe... Just install it from the software center and get back to us if you still have issues :] [14:45] and I'd suggest you to check the flash player too... [14:46] I have the latest flash player (From the LSC) but I don't see java in there [14:48] Do I get it from java.com? [14:48] Should be part of the metapackage lubuntu-restricted-extras [14:49] http://openjdk.java.net/install/ [14:50] Cheers, it's downloading. [14:55] Okies.. Just let us know about the outcome of the installation :] [14:58] How long have you been using lubuntu? (Or are you?) [15:00] Not at work.... I use lxde in one of my desktops [15:01] What's your primary OS, and what do you do? (Sorry for being nosy, just curious.) [15:03] YaMoonSun, you can join us in #lubuntu-offtopic ;] [17:27] I'm not entirely sure how to report bugs to Lubuntu (it doesn't seem to be very straightforward always!!), but I thought I'd post this here. It seems there is a conflict with system-logind and xfce4-power-manager. I posted about it on askubuntu and got a good answer, but this shouldn't be a problem I think. http://askubuntu.com/questions/363510/power-button-in-lubuntu-13-10-will-not-suspend/368306?noredirect=1#368306 [17:56] thehodapp: bug 1222021 [17:56] bug 1222021 in xfce4-power-manager (Ubuntu) "xfce4-power-manager does not inhibit systemd from handling buttons and lid events" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1222021 [17:58] * Unit193 knew it, did a lastlog and didn't see it though. Adobe and Java appear to be up to date, and the camera is being detected, but no display. [23:22] do you have flash [23:22] as that is waht tinychat uses [23:24] Yes, that was the first thing I installed after the OS installed. [23:25] does gucview work? [23:26] connecting to view works fine right? [23:26] Yeah, no problems, but I have yet to record anything with sound. [23:31] arecord -t 10 can see if mic is working or you can agian test in gucview and what browser are you using [23:32] Firefox 25 for ubuntu [23:33] arecord is a 3rd party softwrae? [23:34] YaMoonSun: no, it's part of alsa [23:34] I'm fairly new, and I can't find it; It's in the software center? [23:35] no in terminal [23:35] nope, you have it already [23:35] or you can use gucview for gui [23:36] gucview + firefox = Too much CPU usage - I have to kill the task. [23:39] Nevermind, it freezes regardless. [23:46] This is crap; I was able to cam up twice, I don't know why it's being such a little bitch. [23:58] My clock switched itself to military standard time; Why, and how do I change it back.
