[07:13] :D [07:14] :o [07:14] lol === Guest85644 is now known as ronnoc [15:53] woo hoo...got a tiny box with 2 nics on it's way to replace my tiny router [15:53] current router is a 486 class embedded board [15:54] got a dual core atom with 4gb of ram....with dual gig ethernet [15:55] should be able to run circles around the 133mhz board with 64mb of ram :) [15:55] that's a lot of ram for an atom [15:56] thafreak: what vendor did you go with? [15:57] well...it was like $18 more to go from 2gb to 4gb... [15:57] and pfsense has packages like squid and what not that use extra ram [15:58] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856205007 [15:58] [ OEM Production 2550L2D-MxPC Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System - Newegg.com ] - https://j.mp/19h0Mty [16:00] so excited...my current router i've had for 8 years, but it can't handle lan to lan traffic [16:01] it takes a puke [16:01] well, it slows down so badly that it stops responding, doesn't fail or anything [16:02] i also found a cheap dlink switch that can do very basic vlan tagging [16:02] so i can replace the openwrt wrt54g i'm currently using as a vlan switch ;) [19:45] thafreak: so is the wrt the thing that freezes? [19:51] no, my router does [19:52] I've suspected my switch of choking [19:52] it's currently doing dhcp and dns too, and those both stop working when there's too much traffic [19:52] the latest chokepoint in the home network is my old laptop. [19:52] an HP G42 [19:52] which was cheap when it was new, and didn't get any better, but was surprisingly OK. [19:52] except that it just dominates the wifi spectrum [19:52] what spead? [19:53] er, speed [19:53] can't remember [19:53] 1.6GHz probably [19:53] oh, you mean the switch [19:53] 100GBps [19:53] how is it part of your network? [19:54] it was just a node, but it was doing . . . something that killed everything else [19:54] the laptop tjhat is [19:54] oh, strange [19:54] yeah, I applied some updates, and I think that reset the network and caused the wifi to come back on [19:54] even though I have it on wired ethernet [19:54] but basically I was seeing high packet loss [19:55] I started figuring it out when I saw I was getting acceptable completion on the wired network [19:55] then I remembered that my wife used to complain about her wifi when I was using that laptop. [19:55] I got into the habit of suspending it whenever I wasn't using it. [19:59] wow, I hope i never get a machine like that [19:59] heh [20:00] thing is, it suspended well [20:00] whereas this s230u freaks out about the usb stuff on suspend and so very often suspend fails [20:01] a guy who moved away but still posts to the LUG list has been figuring out lots of this little sort of stuff for his lenovo, different model but roughly the same age [20:01] so far, I can't be bothered with all the tweaking, yet. [20:02] me either...i can't even be bothered with simple stuff anymore [20:02] currently having a hard time picking a new desktop distro because i want something more bleeding edge, but with good lxc/docker support [20:03] Saucy was supposed to be awesome for lxc. [20:03] yeah, that seems like the best option, too bad it only has like 3 months of support left :/ [20:04] actually, 2 [20:05] wut [20:05] * Unit193 wonders where thafreak learned to count. [20:05] precise 12.04, quantal 12.10, raring, 13.04, saucy 13.10 [20:05] so, saucy will be good until 15.04, no? [20:06] 13.10 plus 18 months? [20:06] 9 months after release. [20:06] oh, that's the new thing now is it? [20:06] I guess I heard that but it hadn't sunk in [20:10] Kind of makes sense. [20:22] oh...suacy is 13.10...i was thinking it was 13.04 [20:22] and 13.10 doesn't work with docker [20:23] i thought non-lts desktop releases are only 9 months now
