ussher_I compiled ffmpeg from source, it works, but now when i try adding things that require it, like kdenlive from apt-get it throws errors " Depends: ffmpeg but it is not going to be installed"  How do i tell apt-get that ffmpeg is already installed.07:43
ussher_$ which ffmpeg shows me /home/(me)/bin/ffmpeg07:44
nick07hello, i need some help mounting a nfs share in kubuntu08:10

radio-tvnrkde cannot find usb scarlet and is not working only in jack09:12
valorieussher_: you have to set the path09:14
valorie!path09:14
ubottupath is The $PATH variable tells the shell where to look for the commands you tell it to run. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables#File-location_related_variables09:14
ussher_cheers valorie  ill check that out now.09:20
ussher_valorie:  I added /home/(me)/bin  to the /etc/environment then logged out and restarted the X server.  when i came back in and did $echo $PATH the changes had taken effect, but apt-get still complains "kdenlive : Depends: ffmpeg but it is not going to be installed"09:30
valoriehmmmm09:31
valorieI'm no expert, but I do build amarok locally like you have built ffmpeg (in your home)09:32
valoriethe very detailed instructions we use to build might help09:32
ussher_no worries, its not so important.  Its pretty much how I want it so might be best not to mess with it.09:32
ussher_thanks for your time.09:32

guest7h8vuocan someone assist with a looping login issue? http://askubuntu.com/questions/314362/ubuntu-13-04-login-loop11:41
guest7h8vuoive tried many things.  id take the time to list them but im not sure anyone is around11:41
BluesKajguest7h8vuo. , so the proprietary amd/ati driver doesn't help11:44
guest7h8vuoBluesKaj:  no11:44
BluesKaj!nomodeset | guest7h8vuo , try this11:46
ubottuguest7h8vuo , try this: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter11:46
guest7h8vuoBluesKaj: kubuntu 13.04 has worked with this card for a while, and some earlier versions. i dont see why you suggest a graphical incompatibility11:48
BluesKajguest7h8vuo. it's not incompatible , it bypasses all the programming of the hardware specific clock rates and registers on the video card11:51
BluesKajit's your call11:52
BluesKajperhaps the the gurus at #ubuntu can help since it isn't a kde specific problem , it's an X loading problem , guest7h8vuo11:53
guest7h8vuoBluesKaj: an x loading problem it seems, yeah11:54
BluesKajand my ati graphics knowlwdge is limited , so the guys at #ubuntu know much more than I do , and the room has almost 8 times the population here , chances for a solution are much better there11:56
BluesKajI'm a nvidia user11:57
guest7h8vuoBluesKaj: checking in ubuntu, thanks12:06
guest7h8vuoBluesKaj: thanks for your assistance yesterday too12:06
BluesKajguest7h8vuo. np12:07
guest7h8vuoto reinstall lightdm its 'sudo apt-get install --reinstall lightdm' no?12:29
BluesKajguest7h8vuo. yes12:34
BluesKajguest7h8vuo. another suggestion , altho sybtle it does make a difference on a personal level and that is to choose a real nick and stick with it, so ppl can get to know you and are much more likely to help12:42

Guest80745logged in as guest into kubuntu earlier, large files in /tmp directory i may need to delete.  now logged into livecd kubuntu, what directory contains the guest user files?14:50
lordievaderGuest80745: Thought it was /home/kubuntu (it is made during the boot).14:52
Guest80745lordievader: are guest account tmp files deleted upon exit?14:54
Guest80745it doesnt seem to be so14:56

Guest80745also, what is the default guest account password14:57
Guest80745to login with ctrl+alt+f114:57

hazard_which kubuntu version is More Stable ??14:58
hazard_anyone ??14:59
lordievaderGuest80745: Prgrams may not expect that files remain in /tmp after a reboot. For /var/tmp they may expect them to remain. Or so I read.15:01
lordievaderGuest80745: Oh and I thought you were asking about the live-cd user. I'm not really sure what the homedir is for the guest user. I think something like /home/guest.15:02
Guest80745lordievader: no, its not home/guest, hmm15:03
Guest80745/home/guest15:03
lordievaderGuest80745: You could login as the guest user and issue "echo $HOME".15:05
sebastianHi there! I have a pc with windows that stopped working. I then formatted everything and installed Kubuntu on it. Now I realised that some files that were on the windows partition could still be useful to me (some pdfs) and I would like to recover them. Can someone give me some tips? I am now booted into kubuntu. I downloaded testdisk but Im affraid I am not very good at working through it. Cheers!15:05
Guest80745lordievader: deleted /var/tmp, and good to go i think, guessing guest tmp file(s) is in there somewhere15:06
Guest80745thanks15:06
lordievaderGuest80745: Deleting /var/tmp is not a good idea...15:06
lordievadersebastian: You can forget about those files. If you only formated the disk they might still be recoverable, but since you installed Kubuntu over it the change of recovering anything is near zero.15:07
sebastianlordievader: However the kubuntu install is much smaller than my previous windows installation and all those files. Do you think, given that, there might still be a chance? at least for getting a list of the files still recoverable...15:09
lordievadersebastian: If there is, it is going to be very slim. Also if you are currently using the disk the chance of recovering anything gets smaller and smaller with time.15:11
lordievadersebastian: This is the reason why backing up is so important.15:12
sebastianlordievader: I understand what you mean. However I tried using testdisk just in case there would be that slim chance. I just dont really know how to operate it after the point of selecting the hard disk, which afterwards leads me to the list of partitions of kubuntu. ... and I dont know what to do next. I understand the chance is slim , however I would still like to give it a try. Do you know how should i use test disk?15:14
=== user2 is now known as guest324234
lordievadersebastian: No I don't, I'm afraid. File recovery is a very complex task better left up to professionals.15:17
BluesKajsebastian. and it can be very expensive15:18
lordievaderYes, hiring a professional will be very expensive.15:19
sebastianOk, cheers guys! I'll see how can i deal without the files then15:19

jovandohello can somebody give me a tutorial for chroot?23:41
valorie!chroot23:42
ubottuA chroot is used to make programs believe that the directory they are running in is really the root directory. It can be used to stop programs accessing files outside of that directory, or for compiling 32bit applications in a 64bit environment - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BasicChroot23:42
valoriejovando: ^^^23:43
jovandoi try since 3 hours to do that - have also read the articles but i cant establish23:43
jovandook, thanks but i dont believe that i can establish it with this article23:44
jovandobecause sb said i dont have to install extra packages23:45
jovandothe case is that i cant boot anymore because of load fallback graphic device fail23:45
jovandoso i booted live cd23:46
jovandonow i can do something with chroot so that the system believe i am the system root - not the root of live cd23:46
Joitdont you have a option to boot in recov ery mode with grub?23:48
Joit...by pressing shift key during boot, it should show the grub menu23:49
Joit@jovando23:49
jovandoyes but there are just a menu where i can choose several options23:51
jovandoone moment i will check it on the issue computer23:52
Joitmay try to boot an older kernel, or go to the konsole after the recoverry menu did load?23:52
Joitthen reinstall an other driver for your video card?23:52
jovandook one mom23:53

jovandogrub come automatically....23:53
Joitah, not bym e anymore :)23:54
Joitby me23:54
jovandono kernel works of all any more23:54
jovandook i will choose the recovery mode23:54
Joithow did you manage that23:54
Joitthen you may first check all filesystems23:55
jovandodidnt need shift because boot menu (grub) appears anyway23:55
Joitok, was just in case it didnt anymore23:55
jovandoi chose recovery mode23:55
Joitok23:55
