inashhi there. am using saucy salamander, upgraded from raring. upon upgrade, everything works ok, except when running libreoffice & firefox, it shows ugly default gtk theme. on running " gnome-settings-daemon" on console, received message "(gnome-settings-daemon:15259): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error." any suggestion how to fix this?02:30
wilee-nileeinash, You were correct to be at #ubuntu02:32
inashwilee-nilee : is this some kind of joke =.='02:33
=== Guest64913 is now known as wylde
wilee-nileeinash, No, this is the development Chanel, saucy has been released, if you look at the direct to here and my response to that person on #ubuntu it will make sense.02:38
inashok then02:38
wilee-nileeinash, It's all in the channel header as well.02:39
inashyes I understand. apparently, nobody is giving a clue. on both side02:40
shadowshi, daily inst image boots installs and then black screen with "_" cursor blinking ;  can change to VT2 and login from text though....  Mobile 4 Intel Graphics05:33
shadowsbesides it being likely to be broken, I am confused how to troubleshoot this;  there is no xorg.conf, and then also should I go about making one to try and diagnose? is there a better "Ubuntu way" ?05:34

lord4163Hello18:15
lord4163Where do I find the server edition of Thrusty Tahr?18:15
pfifolord4163: its not available yet, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseSchedule18:17
lord4163pfifo: Damn, what version of php does 13.10 include?18:19
pfifo!info php5 saucy18:20
ubottuphp5 (source: php5): server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language (metapackage). In component main, is optional. Version 5.5.3+dfsg-1ubuntu2 (saucy), package size 1 kB, installed size 29 kB18:20
pfifo5.5.3+dfsg-1ubuntu218:20
lord4163Lol you guys have these bots answering any question :P18:21
elfylord4163: not any question - just those where it's easier :)18:32
elfynot everything has a factoid18:32
pfifotrue, but its eaaier to make a list of stuff we dont have factoids for18:33
IdleOnethe !info command isn't a factoid18:33
elfythanks18:33
IdleOneif you don't give it a package name the bot has no idea what you want18:33
elfyIdleOne: what is it then? never really taken much notice of the !'s to be honest18:34
IdleOnewell !info is a "service"18:34
elfythough I do know where to find the ubottu stuff if necessary18:34
IdleOneit gives information on the package18:34
IdleOnein this case php518:35
elfyyep - I can understand that18:35
shadowson boot, briefly see the (X?) mouse cursor and then it goes back to console with blinking cursor blank screen20:21
shadowshow to go about diagnosing this?20:21
shadowsit's not XFree86 anymore and I don't know the whole flowchart of Ubuntu boot20:22
shadowswhat should be loading so that we can log in, what is that, and how to single it out and determine why it failed?20:22
shadowsbug #969489  applies;  if I boot without "quiet splash" then it seems to work fine20:43
ubottubug 969489 in lightdm (Ubuntu) "lightdm tries (and fails) to start too early?" [High,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/96948920:43
wilee-nilee!nomodeset | shadows20:49
ubottushadows: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter20:49
wilee-nileeshadows, You might just need a graphic driver, you are aware 14.04 is a development?20:50
shadowswilee-nilee: ah, yes, I expect some things not to work20:50
shadowsit's humbling to realize that I don't understand anymore how to find the cause of problems :(20:50
wilee-nileecool, try the nomodeset option if it seems appropriate20:51
wilee-nileeNo one person can find all problems if that helps. ;)20:51
shadowsit was intermittent, so sometimes it would boot and no problem, but most often it would just be a blank VT with flashing cursor20:52
shadowsthat's frustrating for me because I don't know anymore what the name of things are to go find the log file or try to start something in debug mode :)20:53
shadowsanyway it is my friend's computer so I will be only 50% happy to get it working and not know what went wrong? ha20:54
shadowswilee, trying nomodeset like you suggested now20:54
wilee-nileeshadows, I would advise your friend to run a release, a development should be a secondary OS at best.20:55
shadowsthank you20:57
shadowsI think this is still a problem and it would be nice to know what the bug is21:02
