jovandohttp://imagebin.org/27739200:02
Joityou cant do much wrong there, even can get a command line there00:03
jovandois this normal?00:03
Joityes00:03
jovandohave the command line now00:03
Joitit only says, now it mounts your devices, when they are allready mounted, you should not run fsck00:03
jovandofinished00:03
Joitthats why you use recovery mode, where you can use this function save00:03
Joitok, and no errors ?00:04
jovandohttp://imagebin.org/27739400:05
jovandoi dont know00:06
jovandois this a error or is all ok00:06
jovando0.1 percent looks not so good00:06
Joitit did say at the end if it there is something wrong, but if you get Press Enter, anything seems ok00:07
Joitthats ok00:07
Joitmeans only your files are not clean saved, but 0,1% is good00:07
jovandoomg00:08
Joitnow go to network and start it00:08
Joitwhat omg ?00:08
Joityou have anything at one partition?00:09
jovandooh my good00:09
jovandogod00:09
Joiti usually make 2 partitions, one for home, one for the system, that way i can set up all time a new system but keeping my files at the home partition00:09
jovandoi have 5 or 6 partitions00:10
jovandohttp://imagebin.org/27739500:10
jovandodone00:10
jovandoi have now a command line00:11
Joityes, thats a root command line00:11
jovandook, what now=00:11
jovando?00:11
Joithum00:11
Joityou didnt load the network now, right?00:11
Joityou can type "exit!" and come back to the screen00:12
jovandoi chose network00:12
Joitso, whats your video card, you say, it doesnt start anymore because it doesnt load your driver anymore?00:13
jovandoyes i have nvidia00:13
jovandoi chose network at this screen: http://imagebin.org/27739300:13
jovandothats the result: http://imagebin.org/27739500:14
jovandook, i am back in the menu now00:14
jovandonetwork should be enabled00:14
jovandowhat now?00:14
jovandoyes that is right error: load fallback graphic devices                [fail]00:15
jovandowhen i now click on network, the screen http://imagebin.org/277395 dont appear anymore00:16
Joitnow try root for a shell00:18
Joitthere you can try to install a new driver for yor system.00:20
Joitthe menu only executes the options, only the shell is permanent00:21
Joityou remind me at it, as i messed my video drivers up too, and i couldnt find a working one00:21
jovandook thx, and what should i type in?00:24
Joiti need to look what is the best. you may should use a packet manager like dselect00:26
Joitit can look if you have all depencies00:27
Joitmaybe try aptitude, or install it with apt-get install aptitude00:29
jovandoups have deselect installed: http://imagebin.org/27740300:29
jovandoi will remove it00:29
jovandohow can i remove that - so that nothing is left?00:30
Joitok. as you want, but its no big deal, try aptitude, i think its better00:30
jovandook, and how can i remove the program, so that nothing is left?00:30
jovandoremove? autoremove? or purge?00:30
Joitdpkg -r00:31
Joitor apt-get remove00:32
jovandohe writes: "dpkg: warning: there's no installed package matching dselect00:32
Joitapt-get --purge remove dselect00:32
jovandook done00:32
Joitnow install aptitude, its more handy i think00:33
Joitfrom your last screen it says you could update some packages00:34
Joita guess, did you have problems with your installation before, or did you delete some packages, where it did remove more as you did want?00:35
jovandook, sry i had to for my pizza00:35
Joithappy pizza then00:36
jovandoit seems like that aptitude is already installed00:38
jovandohttp://imagebin.org/27740600:38
Joitok, do maybe a apt-get -u upgrade00:39
Joitits on your screen allready too, to do apt-get update or apt-get update --fix-missing00:41
jovandothis is my screen now:00:42
jovandoshould i do the another first before i click yes00:42
jovando?00:42
Joitfirst update, then upgrade00:43
Joitbut not dist-upgrade00:43
Joitbut you can do that with aptitude too i think00:43
jovandook, first update means: apt-get update --fix missing00:44
Joitok00:44
valoriedist-upgrade is GOOD00:46
valoriethat upgrades all your packages00:46
valorieit does not move you to the next version00:46
jovandoapt-get update --fix missing dont work00:47
Joithi valorie good to see you alive :)00:47
jovandohttp://imagebin.org/27741100:48
jovandooh sorry i have forget the - between fix and missing00:48
valorieno, the --fix-missing should go with the upgrade command00:48
valorieupdate just updates your source repos00:49
valoriei'm alive but about to go fix dinner00:49
jovandoi have done apt-get update fix-missing, but i have several warnings and errors00:50
jovandohttp://imagebin.org/27741200:51
valoriejust do apt-get update00:52
valorieno --fix-missing00:52
jovandook00:53
valoriealso: do a copy/paste to a pastebin00:53
valoriethe images are impossible to read, since they don't cover the entire screen00:53
valorie!paste00:53

valoriethis time I'm really going aft00:53
valorieafk00:54
Joityou ned to sudo apt-get00:54
jovandoat apt-get update i have this result: http://imagebin.org/27741400:55
Joitbut well, i forgot its the recovery ko0nsole00:55
Joitat last, it updated some of your files?00:56
jovandoi know i dont have to add sudo, right00:56
jovando?00:56
Joitif some urls dont work, its not fatal error00:56
Joityou simple type sudo apt-get update ie00:57
jovandothe last error dont looks good00:57
jovandohttp://imagebin.org/27741400:57
Joit"sudo command"00:57
jovandoso i should repeat it with sudo command?00:57
Joitwell it says only some hosts are not reachable at the moment, its no big thing00:57
jovandook, so: sudo apt-get update ie now?00:58
Joitapt-get looks usually for more sources, where it can find the files to update,. if some dont works, it only says that00:58
Joitdid yur update finish allready or only showe this errors00:58
jovandoshould I add ie to the command too?00:59
Joitbut mainly, it compares the source hosts, compare the files, and dload them, where it can find some, else, for the others, what dont work, it shows this error00:59
Joitsimple. when you run a command, like apt-get, you either type apt-get install, then it says, you need root privileges, then you type sudo apt-get install01:00
Joitafter that, you need to type your root password in01:00
Joitso either, you run a command as superuser, (sudo) or as normal user01:01
Joitdoes that make sense?01:01
jovandoi think so - i know that you usually need sudo to install something - but here i am root01:02
Joityeah i assume too, that it works without root01:02
jovandoI was not asked about my password because of i am root anyway01:02
Joitdid it update now the files?01:02
Joiti cant see it on the screen01:02
jovandothe same error as before01:03
jovandoone moment01:03
Joitstrange anyhow,, apt-get update --fix-missing works by me01:04
jovandothis is what i typed in: http://imagebin.org/27741501:04
Joitok what happens?01:05
jovandoAnd this is the result: http://imagebin.org/27741601:05
jovando^^ no ask for password01:05
jovandowhat do you recommend?01:06
Joitdid you start your network this time ? you have a connection to the internet?01:08
jovandoi should because i have already installed dselect01:09
jovandowhen i try: "ping www.google.com"01:09
jovandothe output is: ping: unknown host www.google.com01:09
Joittry dhclient01:11
Joitor sudo dhclient01:11
jovandooutput of ping: http://imagebin.org/27741701:12
Joityou dont need to do a picture from any command :)01:13
jovandothis is the output: http://imagebin.org/27741801:14
jovandowhen i try sudo dhclient it is the same01:14
jovandoit is easier for me01:14
=== goodtime_ is now known as goodtime

Joitthen you come back to the menu01:15

Joitok. do dpkg or start network01:16
Joitwell i think we save some time without puictures :)01:16

jovandonow i am here: http://imagebin.org/27742601:36
jovandono, didnt hit Ctrl c01:37
Joitlooking up for that error01:38
jovandothis is the last screen: http://imagebin.org/27742701:38
Joitok someone says, you need to ... sudo apt-get remove nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx then reboot01:39
Joitthen sudo apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx01:39
Joitmeans uninstall nvidiakernle-dkms and nvidia-glx, reboot and isntall it again01:40
jovandook, must say for this here : http://imagebin.org/277426 i have tested this kernel01:40
jovandoi was the issue for that i couldnt boot into the KDE with no kernel01:40
Joitok, when this now works its ok01:41
Joitelse you may need to reinstall this both packages01:41
jovandook, i have pressed enter at last screen, now i am in the recovery menu01:41
geniiHm.01:41
jovandoshould i root again01:41
Joitstart the network first01:41
jovandoand type the commands you gave me?01:41
Joitgenii, hm?01:42
Joityou could try to boot the kernel, if it works01:42
jovando.-)01:42
jovando:-)01:42
jovandobefore i do your commands?01:42
Joitnormal, without recovery, when it doesnt work, you may do the reinstall01:42
jovandook01:42
geniiJoit: I came in at some point after the original problem had been described or addressed. Just noticing the 3.12 kernel on screenshot.01:43
Joithe says, he cant load his kernel anymore because something is wrong with his video drivers genii01:43
Joithe tried to boot with a cd and chroot somewhat, to install the right drivers or at last boot kde01:44
Joiti told him to use the recovery menu from grub, and there it turns out that his system is nt updtodate, and that is, what we did now01:45
geniijovando: Notmally on the grub menu you will have the last few kernels which are on the system from upgrades. You are not able to use a previous kernel which was working ?01:45
jovandofist i was able to use the kernel: 3.2.0-generic pae01:46
jovandoafter install of test kernel - just booted one time into kde and then no kernel worked (booted) any more01:47
jovandosorry i meant the kernel: 3.2.0-52 generic pae01:48
Joityou tried to compile on by yourself, yes?01:48
jovandoand the newer ones didnt work01:48
jovandoso after report to launchpad01:48
jovandothey wrote me a mail where i should try a test kernel01:48
jovandoand after one boot into kde with test kernel - i had to restart (recommended from system) - then i couldnt boot any kernel any more01:49
jovandocompile?01:49
geniiThe first thing you should do is get your system working with a stock kernel, and booting. Then to consider whether you need some custom kernel.01:49
Joitstrange story anyhow, do you have a exotic system for a "test-kernel"?01:49
jovandowhat does that exactly mean?01:49
jovandojep i have Netrunner01:50
Joitstock kernel - generic kernel, what you get with your packetmanager01:50
jovandohey, now i booted with "Netrunner, with linux kernel 3.2.0-52-generic pae and it works!!! :-)01:51
geniiNetrunner is not even a supported distribution in this channel01:51
geniiThis channel is for Kubuntu support.01:51
jovandobut it is the kubuntu version 11.04 LTS01:52
shadeslayerno01:52
jovandoit also look likes the same, except of the button on the left bottom corner01:52

jovandooh, sorry yes01:52

jovandocan i remove my test kernel now?01:53
Joittrow it on mount everest ..01:53
Joitor from it down01:53
Joitwell, i dont know if you like to play around with it, maybe youonly missed to load some modules01:53
jovandomount everest? what is that?01:53
Joitthats a biig mountain01:54
Joitwhere this kernel hopefully falls into a deep hole01:54
jovandooh, sorry :-) yes i will do01:54
jovandocan you give me advice how to remove this test kernel?01:54
Joituse a package manager, it should do it01:55
Joiti have muon on my system :)01:56
jovandohm, i think i had installed it via dpkg on console01:56
Joitthat doesnt matter01:56
Joiti think all the package manager use it too at backround01:57
geniijovando: I just asked in the Kubuntu development channel to clarify where you should seek support. It is recommended either #kde or the forums at http://forums.netrunner-os.com/01:57
Joitbut any packet manager is good enough to remove something from the system01:57
jovandohuh, there are tousands of kernels01:58
jovandohow can i find it01:58
Joittry linux-headers and look right side, wich one is installed01:59
geniiJoit: If you wish to give jovando support, please go to PM, and keep the channel clear for Kubuntu users which may be seeking support here.01:59
Joityeah, well, i stayed here for about a half hour and noone said something, even did not ask my question, but now you think there are 100 ppls what look for support?02:00
geniiThe #kubuntu-offtopic channel may also be appropriate, if it is quiet there.02:00
Joiti may wait after jovanda another hour that someone maybe says something again02:00
geniiJoit: Regardless, this is not the netrunner support channel.02:01
geniiJoit: If you have a Kubuntu question, please ask again and it may be addressed.,02:01
Joitgenii: why does that look like a netrunner support, when he cant boot his kernel anymore02:02
* shadeslayer can look at questions right now02:02
shadeslayerKubuntu ones that is02:02
jovandook, sry, i didnt know that this is so strict - i use konversation the 2nd time in my life02:02
Joitjovando:  i hate it, that it is like that02:03
=== netrunner_ is now known as jovando22
shadeslayerJoit: sometimes netrunner ships Custom kernels from the mainline PPA which are not supported officially, they also use apt pinning and what not so it could be a upgrade gone wrong02:03
Joitand i big reason that i really seldom ask for help in this 'friendly ' channel for help02:03
jovando22ok, this is my other username02:03
jovando22my other system i mean02:03
shadeslayerJoit: which is why it's going to be hard to debug issues, and an entire waste of time for other Kubuntu users to try and help since the kernel could be vastly different from what they're using02:04
geniijovando: Because there are many distributions which are based from Ubuntu/Kubuntu and they all have their own specific quirks which are different from the regular official distributions, it is impossible to support them all and so we must stay with the official distribution.02:04
shadeslayerI know for eg. that Netrunner doesn't ship PA, but Kubuntu does, so any issues related to sound are also going to be hard to debug02:05
jovando22ok, i understand - but netrunner isnt a competition or so?02:05

jovando22sry, just some last questions: does it matter if i remove the header or the image kernel first?02:10
jovando22i just want to remove the test kernel02:10
shadeslayerokay02:10
jovando22because it is not part of the repo02:10
shadeslayerno, it doesn't matter if you remove either of those first02:10
jovando22ok, i removed the image kernel, but i cant find the header kernel ...02:11
jovando22can i just remove it via console?02:12
geniijovando: Probably why nvidia driver failed, since it needs the headers installed, etc. Please come to #kubuntu-offtopic where I will try to give some help.02:12
jovando22ok thx02:13
jovando22and btw A BIG THANK YOU!!!! YOU SAVED MY COMPUTER!!!02:15
draikxWhat is the package to access large drives? I have 4TB drives that I'm trying to access.02:56
geniidraikx: There should not be any particular package for that. It's more dependant on the filesystem which is on the drive, where the limit is. I have for instance 11TB array with ext4 which is fine to read.02:57
draikxAlright. Let me work on this a bit further. Thank you, genii.02:58
draikxgenii, how did you format your drives? I'm trying to format the 4TB drive with ext4, but it fails in KDE Partition Manager03:02
geniidraikx: I just marked all the drives with partition type of RAID autodetect with fdisk, then in gparted assembled them into a RAID5 array, after which it formatted without incident03:05
draikxgenii, thank you. Going to do that now.03:06
draikxgenii, that's working :) Thank you!03:12
geniidraikx: Yer welcome :)03:14

jdolesHow can I see the current status of pulseaudio?14:48
BluesKajjdoles. status as in the daemon ? , if so just type pulseaudio in the terminal14:51
BluesKajotherwise install pavucontrol if you don't have it , for input and output etc settings14:52
jdolesBluesKaj: in pavucontrol, I see a moving bar for a pulse audio output stream, but there is no actual sound being produced.14:54
jdoles"sound" being air moving at a particular frequency.14:55

jdolesBluesKaj: I got it "working", but alsa and pulseaudio together do not form a consistent system.15:07

jdolesBluesKaj: this "UI design" can't really be made any worse.15:08
BluesKajjdoles. no kidding , linux audio lacks a comprehensive audio suite15:09
jdolesBluesKaj: I am only "asking" for Windows 1995 level sound features.15:09
BluesKajjdoles. just press the M key once15:10
jdolesCan I store my alsa and pulse settings somewhere such that I can always bring it back in this state?15:10
jdolesI mean: write a script to apply the current settings when some stupid system has messed up things again.15:11
excalibrSo after playing around with kde these few days, it made me realize how much rigid and dumbed down gnome based DE is. I like almost everything I see in kubuntu except those ugly looking gtk based apps. Is there fix to make them blend well in kde theme?15:11
jdolesexcalibr: what GTK app do you use?15:11
jdolesexcalibr: some have native KDE versions.15:11
jdolesexcalibr: otherwise, I just suggest you get over it, because any theme which is not 'default' is going to be buggy.15:12
jdolesSome people have made it into a sport to make it look exactly like they want, so YMMV.15:12
excalibrjdoles, they are some gtk apps that are shipped by default in kubuntu. i dont remember their names15:12

Do you know any solutions??17:06

BluesKajJohnDoe_DK. yes , do you have a question?21:04
JohnDoe_DKYes, I'm wondering, is it possible to add your google contacts to KAddressBook?21:05
BluesKajhmm, dunno JohnDoe_DK  , I haven't used kmail/kontact  since it  segfaulted after a few days of trying to get it to work for me21:07
JohnDoe_DKIt's just because I find the Korganizer rather handy, and it would be nice to be able to add your google contacts to your calendar appointments...21:09
BluesKaji'm sure import contacts should work if you export your gmail contacts to an .idif or .vcf file in your home dir, JohnDoe_DK21:10

crowellvalorie: are you trying to change your dm from lightdm?23:34
crowellvalorie: if you have kdm installed, you can `dpkg-reconfigure kdm` to make it the default23:35
yofelto answer #kubuntu-offtopic jovando and the dm question: the manager is set in /etc/X11/default-display-manager with the full path23:36
crowellO23:36
yofelor by running what crowell said (less error prone)23:36
* yofel always forgets about that..23:36
valoriecrowell: I was looking for someone else23:36
crowell?23:37
valoriesomeone who asked in the wrong chan23:38

yofeljovando: what's "greeter-session" set to in  /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf ?23:43
yofeljovando: you could also try to check the theme in systemsettings -> login screen (lightdm)23:44
jovandothis here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6434959/23:45
yofelyeah, looks ok. So I guess you're running the default one23:46
jovandoäh, first kdm was default - then i installed lightdm and set it to default23:46
jovandonow i dont need lightdm any more23:47
jovandoand want set kdm to defailt23:47
jovandodefault23:47
yofelfor that either run the command from above (dpkg-reconfigure kdm), or uninstalling lightdm would probably work too23:47
jovandoyofel: ok, i dont want to remove a default set display manager23:52
jovandoi try now: dpkg-reconfigure kdm23:52
