Aluminthe Kubuntu (12.04.3, alternate, 64-bit) installer is telling me it needs a firmware file (a ".ucode" file) for some of my hardware (judging by the filename, for wifi)00:30
AluminI have retrieved the file it's asking for, put it on a second USB drive (the first is my installation media) and inserted it, but when I say "yes" to "do you want to load this file", it just thinks for a minute and goes back to the same question00:30
Aluminwhere do I need to put this .ucode file so that the installer will see it?00:31
Aluminok that's odd...I pulled up a different virtual console and for some reason the system was failing to mount my (MSDOS partition table with a 64GB FAT32 partition/filesystem) thumb drive00:37
AluminI manually mounted it at /media (with simply "mount /dev/sdc1 /media", which worked fine) and went back to the installer, hit return...victory!00:38
Alumin*sigh* unfortunately, still no WPA2-Enterprise support, so I can't connect.  I do have wpa_supplicant at the shell, but can I bring up the wifi manually in such a way that the installer will use it without having configured it itself?00:40
Aluminnope, the installer's wpa_supplicant build doesn't support PEAP00:42
sithlord48Alumin: if you have wifi when you run the installer you have wifi for the installer00:42
Aluminok00:43
Aluminso I guess that makes the question, can I get wifi?  heh00:43
sithlord48if you can do it via the cli. if not a wire is good (if possible)00:44
Aluminyeah, this whole performance is to try and avoid snarfing one of my coworkers' network jacks00:45
Aluminyeah, I'm not sure I can do it via the CLI.  I commented out "eap=PEAP" in my wpa_supplicant config file and that got it to start without errors, but it's still not connecting00:46
Aluminpresumably because that functionality is, y'know, necessary.  :)00:46
sithlord48using iwconfig?00:46
sithlord48Alumin:  if your using iwconfig are you also remembering to run dhclient on the interface afterwards?00:48
Aluminmaaaaaaaybe :)00:50
Aluminok, so that was part of the problem...but I'm also having this problem:  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=189935200:50
sithlord48Alumin:  that one im not so sure about01:01
Aluminyeah, me either01:02
Aluminy'know, you'd think by 2013 this sort of thing would be a bad memory01:02
sithlord48Alumin:  is there a reason you don't use the normal installer?01:04
Aluminthree, actually01:04
sithlord48Alumin:  im using wpa2 for my network and iwconfig "just works" when i give it the info01:04
Aluminfirst, because it doesn't have any wifi support at all in the installer01:05
sithlord48that being said i have not used the alternate installer in a long time01:05
=== bugbear is now known as Guest6802
Aluminsecond, no support for encrypting the entire disk (just /home)01:05
Aluminthird, no LVM support01:05
Aluminyeah, if I had regular WPA2-PSK I'm sure I'd be fine01:05
Aluminunfortunately this is WPA2-Enterprise01:05
sithlord481. use the try kubuntu option and connect then click the installer on the desktop01:06
AluminI'd rather not do that...I don't know enough about full-disk encryption to set it up myself after the fact01:06
Aluminalthough that's good to know you can do that...hadn't thought of that01:06
sithlord48and iirc last time i installed on my laptop i did use LVM encryption as an checkable option01:06
=== Steakanbake is now known as Steakanbake|slee

Aluminthanks, but don't spend any more time on it01:07
AluminI'm fixin' to go home for the day :)01:07
sithlord48ah but i see your using 12.04 . it might be in 12.10 it was added or 13.0401:07
sithlord48either way good luck with it .01:08
Aluminthanks01:08
AluminI'm just gonna hijack my cube neighbour's Ethernet jack when I come in in the morning01:08
Alumin:P01:08
sithlord48lol01:08
Aluminwell01:09
Aluminthat or just install without the network and get my updates later01:09
Aluminwhich at this point I probably should have just done01:09
sithlord48i find its easer to just do it all at onece01:09
Aluminyeah, that was my thinking01:09
sithlord48and either way you still have updates when you reboot some times01:09
AluminWPA2-Enterprise is a real pain point...for me, at least01:09
Aluminthe only way I've ever been able to get it working is by running wpa_supplicant directly from the command line01:10
Aluminnever been able to get knetworkmanager or wicd to talk to it01:10
sithlord48that is weird.01:10
Aluminluckily I don't have to wifi much at work01:11
Aluminwhen I'm at home on WPA2-PSK it's fine01:11
Aluminand every other WAP I use01:11
Aluminjust doesn't work at work 'cause we have -Enterprise here01:12
Aluminanyway, thanks for thinking about it anyway01:13
AluminI actually did remember I had to run dhclient manually, but only a split-second before you mentioned it :P01:13

lordievaderTaduro: As you can see 1500Mb is used for cache. So yes, it is cache.10:14
lordievaderTaduro: 112Mb is actual unused and free.10:14
Tadurolordievader: But when I open one more app, the computer freezs10:16
apacheloggerTaduro: you again have no cache10:16
apacheloggereh, swap10:17
apacheloggerswap is off again10:17
apacheloggeralso I think some plasma applet may be leaking memory10:17
lordievaderMight also be faulty memory.10:17
lordievaderTaduro: And as apachelogger suggests swap is usefull for a 2Gb machine. You quickly run out of memory and then you will get OOM-killers if you don't have swap.10:19
Taduroapachelogger: you know I enabled it the other day :S10:21
TaduroI don't undertand that.10:21
apacheloggernot permanently it seems :P10:21
apacheloggeryou'll have to add the partition to /etc/fstab10:22
lordievaderTaduro: Is there a line for swap in /etc/fstab?10:22

lordievaderTaduro: Does the UUID from this command "blkid `fdisk -l|grep swap|cut -d" " -f1`" match the one in /etc/fstab?10:25
Taduro/dev/sda5: UUID="80efe315-3d51-460c-a295-8cbf4adc829d" TYPE="swap"10:27

Tadurolordievader: nope10:27
lordievaderTaduro: Ok, then change the UUID line in /etc/fstab with the one you just got from the blkid command and reboot.10:28

AvihayI have annoying stuttering in flash. it starts after a long while when the computer is on, and it seemed to happen only in flash, and it seemed to intensify over time. I tried killing all flash instances, but tit didn't solve the problem, only a reboot did13:45
AvihayI started plaing FTL, and noticed it would crash without warning, and that the crashes correlated to when I start having flash problems. ran it in the terminal, and FTL complained about mixing base sounds13:47
Avihaywell, I can 1+1=4 like the next guy13:47
apacheloggerthat doesn't sound right13:48
Avihayso I @ pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start    and all the problems are solved13:48
apacheloggerwell, since both flash and ftl are propietary software I am not sure how we can help13:49
apacheloggermaybe report the issue to the pulseaudio people13:50
Avihayapachelogger: one of my math teachers proved to the class that 1+1=4 , with no apparent mistakes, so restarting pulse it is13:50
apacheloggerthat doesn't sound right either :P13:51
AvihayI wasn't requesting help, I was posting it here for anyone who might encounter a similar flash stuttering13:51
Avihayyhe, stuttering videos really don't sound right13:52
apacheloggerwell, seeing as IRC is non-peristent and knowing about the issue doesn't make it go away in the long run I stand by my suggestion reporting it to pulseaudio13:52

ezra-sis there something better and more complete than ARK for a compression tool in kde?19:05
lordievaderezra-s: What are you missing? For as far as I know is ARK just a gui around tar, unrar or gzip.19:07
ezra-slordievader, encryption19:07
ezra-slordievader, you can use many other formats to compress if you hit "new" in ark19:08
lordievaderezra-s: unrar should be capable of that.19:08
ezra-slordievader, I was refering to GUI tool for KDE19:08
BluesKajtar should as well19:08
ezra-ssorry for not being specific19:08
ezra-sit's not that I even need it now really someone asked in #ubuntu and I got curious since I see ark as no encryption options19:09
lordievaderezra-s: Oh, no idea in that case.19:10
ezra-smmm, it's surprising19:10
BluesKajencryption and compression are different of course19:10
ezra-sBluesKaj, I agree19:10
ezra-sit's just that some compression tools allow encryption19:11
BluesKajyes , but why bother , it was fine when space was at a premium19:11
ezra-s?19:12

ezra-sohh, hehehe, just curiosity19:12
ezra-ssince KDE is always full of options everywhere, it really surprised me see such a simple compression gui tool19:12

ezra-ssorry I do apologize I meant LUKS19:22
ezra-sfull disk encryption, with LVM and all19:22
Ertheezra-s: You should add encryption capabilities to Ark and submit them.  :D19:22
ezra-ssee? no problems at all I even forgot its name :P19:22
ezra-sErthe, I have no problem with ark being as it is, I said I wasn't complaining, I was just surprised since everything in KDE has so many options to configure19:23
ezra-sit all came from someone else asking in another channel and I got curious19:23
Ertheezra-s: I understand that, but I'd like to see some encryption options too  :)19:23
ezra-sBluesKaj, problem comes when you forget the password or masterkey ;)19:24
BluesKajezra-s. no kidding :)19:24
ezra-sit happened to me once with ecryptfs19:24
