oregonI've got an issue with aptitude. I run "sudo aptitude update," then "sudo aptidude upgrade." No problem. Then if I run "sudo aptitude install" later, it wants to bring in a bunch of older kernels. Even if it just brought them in last time, it needs to download them and install them again. What can I do to prevent this?07:38
ss_hazeoregon, you could do a barrel roll07:39
oregonWhat's that in this context?07:39
ss_hazebut seriously,  you have small disk space for those kernels07:40
jarkkowhy dont you just use sudo apt-get update and upgrade?07:41
oregonI've got plenty of disk space. I'm nowhere near the limit.07:41

ss_hazeI issues with kde not working like windows 7 ui, so I just use Unity, since it's ubuntu, but as they say, everyone have different taste07:43
oregonI come to #kubuntu for help and I get a suggestion to switch to mint... sigh07:43

lordievaderalvin: Could you pastebin the full output?09:21
lordievadernafg: In upstart: "start on starting lightdm" will start the script just before lightdm is starting.09:21
nafglordievader: I need lightm not to start until it's finished09:22
nafgIt can start much earlier09:22
lordievadernafg: Perhaps the documentation can help you with that: http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/09:26
nafgyes, i'm looking at it09:26
nafgi'm not convinced upstart is the way to go09:26
nafgbecause i don't think upstart waits until my script finishes09:28
lordievadernafg: "start on started <job>" I read here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/359468/upstart-start-after-task-finished09:30
nafglordievader: that person does not have a working solution09:31
nafgBut he's trying to do something different09:31
nafgHe has control over the *second* job that has to wait for something to finish09:31
nafgI need to *prevent* the other job from starting until my job finished09:32
lordievadernafg: Ugh should've read more, sorry. Anyhow I did find that there is some kind of finish signal. So if you can modify the lightdm.conf to start on the finish event of your script I guess you're done.09:35
nafgi can't do that09:36
nafgtoo messy09:36
nafgthis is an automated script to provision a kiosk09:36
nafgscripting such an edit will be too brittle09:36
lordievadernafg: You could make a lightdm.override, that should override the lightdm.conf.09:40
nafgThank G-d, I think I found the answer: you have to mark it as a task09:41
lordievaderThere is a started event: http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#starting-a-job Strange that it didn't work for that guy.09:41
nafglordievader: what does that do?09:41
nafgno09:42
nafgsorry, it still doesn't work09:43

ErtheIf you have never used IRC before, just do a quick Google search21:53
ikonianewboy: ok, so lets give you the basics21:54
ikonia!guidelines | newboy21:54
ubottunewboy: The guidelines for using the Ubuntu channels can be found here: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines21:54
newboyErthe: ok, so i gather now that I direct responses with name: follow up... good start.... and how do move around and find other channels or is that client dependant?21:54
ikonianewboy: if you read the URL ubottu has given you, that will tell you what's expected of your interaction any channels in the ubuntu world21:54
Erthenewboy: Depending on the client you're using, a list of all the channels would be fetched a little differently21:55
Erthenewboy: But the IRC command would be /list21:55
ikonianewboy: if you join the channel #freenode (/join #freenode) and ask for an introduction, a fair few people will walk you through the basics21:56
newboyikonia: thank you, will head there now for a run through. Ubottu: thank you for the URL reading that now. Erthe: Thank you, i'll attempt to not be a nugget next time, thank you all.21:58
ikonianewboy: no harm in ever asking21:59
Erthenewboy: Hey no problem, IRC was a bit daunting to me at first twenty some odd years ago, but it's easy to learn the basics in just a half an hour  :)21:59
newboythanks again everyone, hopefully I'll come across you all again at some point - great first experience.22:05
