=== Alien_ is now known as Guest58267
Guest58267I'm having a lot of trouble getting Xubuntu to load from a usb on my UEFI Gateway LT41p netbook00:41
Guest58267I've read a ton of materials and nothing seemed to have worked.  Any way to get my system to boot from USB?00:41
GridCubeGuest58267, it depends on the uefi00:44
bekksGuest58267: Disable safe boot, set boot order to usb.00:44
Guest58267I did that bekks, and it still boots to Windows8, I disabled safe boot, fast boot, theres no option for legacy bios00:45
Guest58267When I go to select boot device, the only option present is Windows Boot Manager00:45
Guest58267Any ideas on how to get it to boot usb?00:49
Guest58267Anybody?00:57
xubuntu299Hi00:58
MegabyteHello, guys02:18
MegabyteI've downloaded safe-rm02:18
Megabytebut... it is not working... I created a test folder on my drive and tried to delete it, and it was successful02:18
Megabyte(as a regular user, naturally)02:18
xubuntu285helo03:54
xubuntu285?03:55
holsteinxubuntu285: do you have a question?03:56
xubuntu285hi yes i have been trying to get multi-touch working on the synaptics touchpad on Xubuntu,03:57
xubuntu285i cannot get the touchpad detected,,,,}03:58
holsteinxubuntu285: it works out of the box for me.. are you sure the touchpad is functional?03:58
xubuntu285yes it works like a regular mouse, bur i wanted to get the two-inger scrolling working..03:59
holsteinxubuntu285: so, the touchpad is detected then? what is not detected?04:00
holsteinxubuntu285: what exactly are you trying to make happen? i have 2 finger scroll, and depending on the hardware, i get a few more features04:01
xubuntu285device shows as "Virtualbox mouse integration" - i want two finger scrolling, but it doesnt work.04:02
holsteinxubuntu285: if its a guest, it might not04:03
holsteinxubuntu285: xubuntu is virtualized? what are you trying to enable?04:03
xubuntu285i am running Xubuntu in a VM on a Win7 box.04:04
holsteinxubuntu285: it may not pass through from the host like that04:04
holsteinxubuntu285: as far as xubuntu is concerned, you are using an actual mouse on a machine somewhere that is called "virtualbox".. not a synaptics touchpad04:05
Poisoned_DragonI don't even know if win7 does two-finger scrolling.04:05
holsteinxubuntu285: have you enabled/installed the guest additions?04:05
xubuntu285yes i have the latest version of virtualbox and the guest addtions04:06
Poisoned_DragonSo, if Win7 doesn't, and Win7 is the host, it probably won't work in any OS in VM.04:06
xubuntu285on win7 is works fine. it is a hp notebook and comes with a synaptics driver utlity04:07
holsteinxubuntu285: this is a virtualization issue.. this will not be solved by troubleshooting enabling 2 finger scolling with a synaptics touchpad.. your question should be "enabling 2 finger scrolling from win7 host to xubuntu guest"04:07
holsteinxubuntu285: this is not a synaptics device to xubuntu.. its a virtualized device04:08
xubuntu285ok i see. i will try to search around that issue. thanks for your help.04:08

arpad2how can be some programs' autostart altered?11:42
arpad2in 'Session and Startup' menu I don't see those programs which start automatically after login11:44
krytarikarpad2: And which are those?11:47
pjotterHi people! Just wanted to ask a question here about the xfce desktop12:16
pjotterIḿ having this problem with the Trash. It seems that everytime I log in or restart the computer, the trash is shown to be empty in thunar. Even though there are items in it.12:17
pjotterSometimes it helps to close thunar and restart it. Sometimes, thunar will then show the trash to be full and I can go ahead and empty it. But most of the time, thunar indicates that it is empty and I can't empty it. That option is grayed out.12:19
pjotterThe only way to get it working again is to create a 'dummy file' and put it in the trash. Then, alloversudden. Everything works fine again.12:19
pjotterHas anybody else noticed this behaviour in Xubuntu?12:20
well_laid_lawnpjotter:  I've had that previously. I would just rm ~/.local/share/Trah/*12:23
well_laid_lawnpjotter:  I've had that previously. I would just rm ~/.local/share/Trash/*12:23
pjotterThat could be a solution. Although it is pretty annoying that you can;t rely on the trash to give you the right information about it's status.12:24
well_laid_lawnyep. There's something else going on. iirc a later update fixed things12:25
well_laid_lawnmight pay to see if someone in #xfce has a clue12:26
pjotterWhat update was that? I keep my Xubuntu up to date. But the problem still persists.12:26
well_laid_lawnit was a while ago I had that issue12:27
well_laid_lawnmaybe a year or so12:27
pjotterOk. Well I just installed a new Xubuntu 12.04, upgraded to xfce 4.10. Ran all updates but still have this problem.12:28
well_laid_lawnI never found a solution or worried about it too much. If it bothers you enough trying the xfce channel might get you a solution12:29
pjotterWell, like I said.. Putting something in the trash seems to normalise the problem. I might have a script run at startup that does just that. Maybe that will 'fix' it?12:31
well_laid_lawnmore like a workaround but sure, do that12:31
well_laid_lawnluck12:31
pjotter'K Thanks :)12:31
xubuntu903bonjour13:19

krytarikOther than that, bonjour. :)13:20
xubuntu903sorry13:20
pjotterhi there13:43
pjotterJust to let you know. The workaround worked. Just run a script at startup that creates a dummy-file in the trash and immediately delete it will 'fix' the trash problem. It's not a very nice 'fix', but for the time being it will do.13:45
cfhowlettpjotter, (and I NEVER suggest this) sounds like a bug report might be in order13:45
pjotterI think so too13:45
knomelet me make sure; you are running 12.04 with the 4.10 PPA?13:46
pjotterI'll double check13:47
knomebecause in that case, you shouldn't file a bug report...13:47
pjotterYes, that is my setup13:48
pjotterWhy shouldn't it be reported as a bug?13:48
knomethe 4.10 PPA is provided as-is, with no promises of it working or not13:48
pjotterOk, I see.13:48
knomeif the bug appears without that, then please file it13:48
pjotterI'm not sure if this problem didn't already occur before the upgrade though13:48
knomewe have the new LTS incoming soon (in april) too13:49
pjotterI know. Looking forward to it! :D13:49
pjotterIn the next day I will be installing another clean 12.04 on another computer. I will check to see if the problem occurs.13:51
knomeok, thanks, and good luck13:51
pjotterI think it is this bug: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=900613:52
ubottubugzilla.xfce.org bug 9006 in General "Shows empty trash icon first time it's opened even if trash isn't empty." [Normal,Resolved: fixed]13:52
pjotterOk. So it appears. But upgrading to xfce 4.10 will (appearently) cause the bug to reappear?13:53
knomei have no idea, but that's completely possible13:54
pjotterI'll test it in a few days.13:54
knomecheers13:54
pjotterItś not really a 'big' thing13:54
pjotterIn meanwhile, the my 'fix' seems to work fine.13:55
cfhowlettpjotter, yeah, but that does need to be fixed.13:55
Poisoned_DragonI use 12.04 with the 4.10 ppa. seems fine for me.13:55
knomecfhowlett, my point is, it might be an anomaly of using 12.04 with the xfce 4.10 package.13:55
knomes/package/PPA/13:55
cfhowlett^^^^ point taken13:56
Poisoned_Dragonmy only occasional issue is a broken pipe at boot and being dumped to tty.13:56
Poisoned_DragonI just reboot and it's fine14:00
pjotterYou can test it by doing: 1)Make sure something is in the trash 2) restart Xubuntu 3) Open Thunar. At this point my thunar always reports zero items in trash. 4) restart thunar. At this point thunar -sometimes-  reports there are items in the trash.14:00
knomeif any of you are interested in helping us out, see http://xubuntu.org/news/help-us-test-xubuntu-14-04-lts/14:01
pjotterPoisoned_Dragon: I'm on an amd64 system. Is yours also amd64?14:03
Poisoned_DragonNo, I'm using 12.04 on an pentium M. 32bit.14:04
Poisoned_Dragonan=a14:05
pjotterOk. Sometimes bugs appear to be limited to only one architecture. Maybe in this case also. I don't know.14:05
pjotterI have two amd64 systems. So I wouldn't know if the bug also appears on a 32 bit system.14:06
Poisoned_Dragonyou can install a 32bit os on a amd64 processor. That could be a good way to test it.14:07
Sh1G3rUpjotter,  do you have any removable devices pluged in when the trash has items in it?14:08
pjotterJust one USB. But there a no items in the trash that originate from that USB14:09
Sh1G3rUpjotter,  every device actually has his own "trash" can, plug the device in and empty trash14:10
Sh1G3rUand you are done14:10
pjotterIt was already pugged in. But I will see if it changes anything to the problem I'm experiencing.14:11
Sh1G3rUwell you can try and restore the files, and see where they lead. usually are removable devices or external hdd14:12
pjotterI'm not sure how that relates to the problem I have?14:13
pjotterI must logout/in. brb...14:14
pjotterOk, the problem seems not to be related to the USB. It makes no difference wheter it is plugged in or not.14:16
Sh1G3rUpjotter,  do you actually have files on trashcan??14:21
pjotterYes14:22
Sh1G3rUnow go to the trash , right click on one of the files14:22
Sh1G3rUan properties14:23
Sh1G3rUpjotter,  check for original path14:23
pjotterok14:23
pjotterit's ok14:23
pjotterpaths are correct14:24
Sh1G3rUwhat does it say14:24
pjotterIt just gives the original path to where the files were located14:24
Sh1G3rUempty trash14:25
pjotterdone14:26
pjotterTrash shows 'empty trash icon'. No files in trash.14:26
pjotterBut this is not really what my problem is about14:26
Sh1G3rUnow remove any usb/removable hdd you have there and logout/login again14:27
pjotterThe trash is working properly. The only thing that is going wrong is when you just startup your computer. The tras is then always shown as 'empty'. Even if there are files in it.14:27
Sh1G3rUi see14:28
pjotterSh1G3rU: I already did that, and it didn't make any difference. Trash still shows up 'empty' after startup, even when trash contains files.14:28
pjotterBut it seems this is a known bug: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=900614:28
ubottubugzilla.xfce.org bug 9006 in General "Shows empty trash icon first time it's opened even if trash isn't empty." [Normal,Resolved: fixed]14:28
Sh1G3rUi see14:29
pjotterThe only thing they are not aware of is that this bug seems to be back again in xfce 4.1014:29
Sh1G3rUhow many users do you have on that pc14:30
Sh1G3rU?14:30
pjotterI have yet to test the beta 14.04 version to see if the bug is there also.14:30
pjotterone14:30
pjotterWell two, if you count root14:31
Sh1G3rUdo you have any scripts/apps that send file to the trash with different credentials?14:31
pjotterno14:31
pjotterIt's a pretty much 'out-of-the-box' Xubuntu 12.04 installation. Only thing I did was uypgrade to xfce 4.1014:32
pjotterFor some reason, the system always 'thinks' that there are no files in trash at startup. Even when there are. If you put a dummy file in the trash and then delete it agina (from trash) the situation seems to be normalised and thunar reprts the correct status of the trash (wheter it be full or empty)14:34
Sh1G3rUit never happened to me14:34
pjotterAre you also on a 32 bit system?14:34
Sh1G3rUyes14:34
pjotterOk. Then that might be the reason14:34
pjotterMaybe this bug only appears in the amd64 version14:35
Sh1G3rUare you an a 64 bit system?14:35
pjotterYes14:35
Sh1G3rUtry applying that patch it seems to fix that14:37
pjotterI tried. But it didn't work for me.14:39
pjotterO wait.. you mean the path (I thought you meant the workaround given there)14:39
pjotterIḿ not sure how to apply such a patch?14:40
pjotterDoes it involve recompiling Xubuntu or something?14:41
pjotterThat is something I have been wanting to know for some time. Evey once in a while you come across 'a patch' for some bug. But how does one go about applying such a patch?14:46
=== GTB3NW_AWAY is now known as GTB3NW
enrico__hi guys, I'm having issues with an USB mixer (belkin tunestudio), it looks like xubuntu doesn't detect it14:51
xubuntu309Hi14:55
krytarikpjotter: Yes, that'd involve recompiling.15:00
krytarikBtw, you really mean the -desktop- icon of the trash?15:01
pjotterI was afraid someone would say that :) Everytime I engage in such a project, it usually ends up in completely having to reinstall Xubuntu again.15:02
pjotterNo, it's all icons actually15:02
pjotterI have disabled my desktop trash icon15:02
pjotterAnd added one to one of the panels15:02
krytarikBecause that always involve different packages, the bug report you linked to is for 'xfdesktop'.15:03
krytarik*involves15:03
pjotterBut I tested t. They all exibit this behaviour. Although I found that sometimes. The desktop trash icon will show 'empty', while the panel-trash-icon will show full. So there is also something funny going on there.15:04
krytarikIt's like I just said. :)15:04
pjotterOk, so there is no bug filed for Xubuntu yet?15:05
krytarikYou file bug reports against specific packages, not distros.15:06
syeekickhey15:07
pjotterSo there is no bug report on this specific bug in connection to xubuntu yet?15:08
pjotterTo what package does Trash belong to?15:09
krytarikAs I said, you'd have to be very specific, and then you can search on Launchpad for any existing bug reports.15:10
krytarikpjotter: You need to distinguish between the actual trash, which is handled by Thunar, and the various ways to represent it.15:16
MegabyteHi16:44

AntimattercarpTo the point where a hard reboot is necessary?16:58
AntimattercarpI am on xubuntu 12.04 I think17:00
AntimattercarpI am almost a total noob with linux17:01
wannaNIXhi guys, where do I check for why a fresh install of Xubuntu hangs?19:07
wannaNIXbooted up from a hiren's and mounted the hdd19:07
wannaNIXjust a few pointers please19:10
pjotterI'm a complete noob in these things but I isn't there a 'safe mode' somewhere just before booting? You may be able to boot it that way and hopefully see what the problem was using the logs?19:22
bekks!nomodeset19:22
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter19:22
holsteinwannaNIX: i test the hardware.. i use live CD's to test and/or repair the file system.. basically, the same as you would for any OS20:06
arca0hi everyone, I'm having a problem with some weird graphical artifacts while using an Intel Mobile 4 Series integrated card.20:19
arca0these artifacts appear at sides of windows in xfce on 13.1020:19
well_laid_lawnare you using the compositor?20:20
arca0it's a default xfce setup - I haven't changed any settings so im not sure20:20
arca0oh yes, I switched it off now20:21
well_laid_lawnsee if that helps20:21
arca0looks like they're still here but I'll see on new windows20:21
arca0yeh, it's still here - these only appear occasionally - mainly with firefox it seems20:23
holsteinyou could try forcing the vesa driver to remove the module in use from the equation20:24
arca0well, that's an option20:25
arca0although it's sad - it worked so well just a release ago :(20:26
holsteincould be a backport that adds support back into the kernel.. assuming that is the issue, which you could test by using a vesa driver.. i would have also tested without flash, if that is the case, if firefox is literally the only thing causing the issue, and that is indeed during flash video playback20:27
arca0oh no, I'm not using flash and it's not only firefox - happens very occasionally with terminal too20:28
arca0plus fonts get weird artifacts as well20:28
arca0(if that might be a hint)20:28
holsteini think the best hint would be, under a different driver, you have no artifacts20:29
holsteini would also look for and apply all upgrades, in case a fix has come through20:29
arca0I have updated. and I've also run xubuntu 13.10 on this laptop with the amd gfx card active instead of the integrated one and it ran without artifacts20:30
holsteinarca0: there are PPA's (which are not officially supported) for those dual gpu cards.. i would say, that is the issue.20:30
arca0ok thanks, I'll check them out then :)20:31
holsteinarca0: might be a bug for that.. usually the intel sides are supported out of the box20:32
arca0yea it was running very smoothly until this update - that's why i disabled hybrid/dual and ceased to use amd entirely - it was very buggy20:33
holsteinarca0: try booting the last kernel and testing20:34
holsteinarca0: when you said "default setup, i havent changed anything" that wasnt implying to me that an upgrade broke it20:34
holsteinarca0: if everything was fine, you did an upgrade and a kernel upgrade came in, and now this is happening, test with the last kernel.. that is likely the issue20:35
arca0oh sorry, I've been using xubuntu 13.04 but did a fresh install of 13.1020:35
holsteinarca0: you can tap shift at boot, and get to the kernel list20:35
arca0so it was not technically an update ;)20:35
arca0sorry for the confusion20:35
holsteinarca0: i would try from a live CD for 13.10.. to make certain this is nothing in the version upgrade20:36
holsteinarca0: i would try as a diffrent user to make sure its nothing in the user config20:36
arca0holstein: good points - anything else you could suggest? I'd get to it immediately20:37
holsteinarca0: other than looking for xorg logs, not really20:37
arca0holstein: ok thanks - I'll get to it and try to find what's wrong - thanks very much for your help20:38
holsteinarca0: good luck!20:38
arca0cheers and laters :)20:39
wannaNIXholstein: i checked syslog and it errored something about all the partitions (made in windows), deleted the partition table and remade it in ext4 and swap, then didn't know what to look for next... still freezes on boot21:19
holsteinwannaNIX: i try live CD's, but i have my data backed up, incase i need to reinstall. i would test a live CD, then you will be able to test the hard drive and memory.21:23
wannaNIXholstein: live cd doesn't work also (xubuntu 13.10) freezes the whole pc at the ~same point21:29
wannaNIXdownloading ubcd now...21:30
