I need a bottom level introduction to this OS. [00:38] okay, found it [00:38] Another help. is how do I install Skype ? [00:39] I think it's odd that the package manager doesn't show any relevant results when searching for haskell, only for "haskell-platform" [00:39] Just go to Skype.com en download skype for Ubuntu/Debian? Im using firefox browser. [01:13] Bye [02:18] its need any driver ? i lost my driver [02:22] hello ! [03:35] is gigolo is kinda de-facto standard for mounting things? or are there other frontends? [06:16] Hey there. I'm wanting to dual boot a desktop with Windows and Xubuntu. Would you recommend installing Windows first on just a partition of half the disk then installing Xubuntu on the other partition? [06:17] theStew, windows first, yes.. [06:19] Someone said that I could install Windows on the whole disk then just take a chunk off a partition a bit for a Linux install. But to me it just seems more logical to partition the disk into 2 and install windows on one and linux on the other. [06:21] theStew, that is the recommended practice. a 50/50 allocation of disk space works well. Set that up in the windows partitioning: 1/2 for windows and the other 1/2 blank [06:22] that I'll do. Thanks [07:48] hi, i've been trying to get an analogue video capture card working, installed v4l from git and now have no /dev/video* entries. I'm not sure if they are renamed or if I've done something false. [13:02] hello [13:03] i have a issue with my sound on xubuntu 13.10 . [13:03] I have a acer ao751h and the sound lags on the video and gstreamer . [13:08] anyone ? [14:32] koegs: i edited /etc/enviorment but the changes are not taking effect [14:32] is that where i should be making the changes? [14:33] how do you check the "changes"? [14:34] mastershake: /etc/environment and /etc/profile are the way to go [14:34] im just trying to configure for tor and check.torproject.org is saying no [14:34] maybe you should set the proxy in your browser :) [14:35] chrome won't let me configure it thru browser [14:35] tor is a totally different thing, got no experience with that [14:35] it gives me an error [14:35] /usr/bin/chromium-browser --proxy-server="localhost:8118" [14:35] or add it to /etc/chromium-browser/default [14:36] im using google-chrome-stable not chromium, same thing? [17:22] commander_, if xrandr shows you just one setting there is no easy way to change the resolution, except ofcourse forcing the xrandr options, and for the double clic do the double clic on the tittle of the window you want to enlarge [17:23] you can also press alt-F10 to maximize faster [17:26] GridCube, I see in the window manager setting double click should work but it doesn't and i also noticed that my scroll button doesn't work :/ [17:27] commander_, you might need to tap twice pretty fast on the tittle, on the words of the title of the page [17:27] alt-f10 is way faster [17:30] Hey there [17:30] totally new to this whole stuff here [17:30] !hi | xubuntu910 [17:30] xubuntu910: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay! [17:31] So here's my question [17:32] I got this old netbook running on Windows 7 startert and I want to use it at a test stuff to learn about linux and such [17:33] I want to install xubuntu instead of W7, I got the ISO but of course no CD reader on the netbook, so I try to mount the ISO. But then, when I reboot nothing happen [17:33] any clue ? [17:34] Do you have a spare usb drive? [17:34] Hu churl ; yup, the ISO is on the USB drive [17:35] xubuntu910: is it just the iso file on the drive? [17:35] yes [17:35] the mounted CD is on virtual drive [17:36] So you'll need a windows program that will use the ISO file and make the USB drive into something bootable [17:36] xubuntu910, thats not how it works [17:37] !unetbootin | xubuntu910 [17:37] xubuntu910: For information about installing Ubuntu from USB flash drives, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick - For a persistent live USB install, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent [17:38] thanks ubottu, I will read those links again [17:38] xubuntu910: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ [17:38] unetbootin is the easier way yes, but do read the tutorial [17:38] Thanks GridCube and Churl I'll look forward to all this [17:39] it takes the ISO and takes files out of it and sets up a file system on the usb drive. [17:39] OK [18:10] hey there again [18:11] Thanks forUNetbootin [18:11] did the stuff with the ISO on the SUB drive, then rebooted [18:11] perfect :) [18:11] Alas, in the BIOS, the only option is Windows 7 [18:12] the BIOS has not saying on what system is installed [18:12] Note that the USB is in FAT 32 so that should be OK I guess [18:12] yes [18:12] xubuntu910, when rebooting press the key that lets you choose the booting medium [18:13] it usually says in the bios screen, its usually or F8 or F12 [18:13] GridCube I'll try again, but I did try with backspace and F1 and the result was the same, no USB option to boot [18:13] I'll try F8 and F12 [18:13] xubuntu910, read wht the bios screen says [18:14] it usually is there a "press F# for boot options" [18:14] unless ofcourse this is a UEFI machine [18:14] in that case im like jon snow [18:15] Hello xubuntu91. Try "Del" key too. =) [18:15] F8 : propose me to boot in different Windows mode, like "mode sans echec" (don't know how to translate : boot without fail ?" [18:15] but no USB option [18:15] xubuntu910, :/ you might have an uefi machine? [18:16] disable secure boot in that case? [18:16] IDK, it's an eeePC from Asus, not exactly the last stuff on the market [18:17] what model is it? [18:18] 1015PEM [18:18] firs google result says: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1864795 [18:20] GridCube thanks I'll play a little with those solutions to see what happen [18:40] If someone could help me with adding the facebook app to xfce [18:41] I have looked in the software center and could not find the app. Is anyone in here that can help me with this? === aziz_ is now known as aziz === pAt_ is now known as Guest21542 [19:01] hi [19:48] howdy y'all. so i just did a fresh xubuntu 13.10 install, chose to use encrypted disk and lvm. now i'm trying to change the luks password, but i'm not sure where the actual volume is. there's only one disk, /dev/sda1, but when i run 'sudo cryptsetup luksChangeKey /dev/sda1' it says 'not a valid LUKS device'. [19:49] so... what device do i point it to? [19:50] ah nvm, sda5 seems to work. :P === map is now known as Guest6611 [21:03] Hello. I am trying to run a .sh, but permission is denied. chmod -x exact_name.sh does not make it executable. here is no option is properties tab. What do I do? [21:04] I am in the correct directory. [21:05] Never mind, the option has now mysteriously appeared in the properties tab... [21:05] Sorry. === lderan_ is now known as lderan [21:31] Anybody know why, when I click on the desktop and select "Create from template", thunar doesn't show the template I stored in ~/Templates ? This has never worked for me since I started with Xubuntu (quantal I think) [21:49] Scriptwriter: Have you already checked that -- XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates" -- is in your "~/.config/user-dirs.dirs"? [22:57] question [22:57] why the hell [22:57] is it so goddamn difficult [22:57] to configure a freakin' proxy in xubuntu? [22:57] to write on one line? :P [22:57] please mind the language, this is a family-friendly channel [22:58] it's retarded [22:58] was this specifically designed for users that would never use a proxy?? [22:59] I use a proxy, no problem-o. [23:00] editing /etc/environment does nothing. editing /etc/profile does nothing. [23:00] i just want to configure a system-wide socks proxy. can anyone here help me or am i just going to switch distros? [23:01] Fyi, he's talking about Chrome. :P [23:01] With Tor. [23:01] i can configure chrome to use a proxy through terminal just fine [23:02] Good, so you managed that earlier today. [23:03] So where specifically is the problem now then? [23:03] $google-chrome-stable --proxy-server=socks://127.0.0.1:9050 ... that's not what im looking for. [23:04] So for what? [23:07] mastershake: Btw, reg. Chrome with Tor, you may want to have a look at this guide, specifically "Method 1" there: http://justplainobvious.blogspot.de/2011/03/how-to-configure-google-chrome-for-tor.html [23:12] ...kthx [23:12] whoops, just saw all that. [23:15] well krytarik , what about setting for system wide? [23:17] mastershake: There -- http://askubuntu.com/questions/150210/how-do-i-set-systemwide-proxy-servers-in-xubuntu-lubuntu-or-ubuntu-studio -- and there: http://askubuntu.com/questions/24116/what-is-the-all-proxy-environment-variable-used-for === Lothenon is now known as Rochvellon [23:25] krytarik, Sorry for the delay. I haven't checked that because I had no idea I needed to. [23:25] Everything I saw when I was researching the problem said to just drop the files into "~/Templates" [23:26] So thanks for the pointer, apparently now it's pointing to my home directory, so I'll see what happens if I change it. === GTB3NW is now known as GTB3NW_AWAY [23:54] hi great people! [23:54] Can anyone help a noob with soundcloud issues? [23:54] What issue? [23:55] It just wont play either in firefox or chromium - it just sits there after I hit the play button :( [23:57] I'm new to xubuntu and not so hot always at deciphering what people are talking about on message boards to fix this. [23:59] Well that's pretty stupid, they don't work with the 11.2 series of flash, only 11.9 -_- [23:59] So this is a browser issue; the newest version of flash is not supported by these browsers in xubuntu?
