BluesKajhaving a tough time installing kubuntu on this new laptop, the UEFI / |BIOS settings are hit and miss12:49
monkeyjuicefirst time with uefi?  ive not tryed it yet12:50
BluesKajyeah, loyya researfch to do , seems to vary according to the mobo installed13:00
BluesKajlots of13:00
monkeyjuicegreat when ya figure it out let me know lol save me doing it13:00
BluesKajusing kde for windows atm , wiped W8 and installed W713:01

BluesKajit came with W8.113:03
BluesKaj6 partitions , believe it or not13:05
monkeyjuicehow can that be?13:05
monkeyjuicestrange13:05
monkeyjuicealot has changed then i guess13:06
alvinWindows needs 4 when using UEFI and GPT. Keep some space for Kubuntu (at least 2: root and swap)13:06
BluesKajtoo late13:07
BluesKajw7 needs only 213:10
monkeyjuicewhat kubuntu you loading ?13:10

monkeyjuiceyou turning ueft off then or what?13:12

soeestrange, as i said before on my dell i didnt experienced aby problems :)13:20
alvinThey do? It has been a h13:20
alvinwhile since I tried.13:20
alvinPure UEFI here. No problems with Kubuntu 13.10, but it needed a bit of searching for the right combination... Also, Windows doesn't actually show all partitions, but you can see them from Linux.13:21
soeejust bought, resized main partition, created 2 new partitions (for / and home), reboot install Kubuntu, be happy :D13:21

BluesKajhaven't tried gparted live cd or a bootable image on usb yet , guess that's my next attempt13:25
BluesKajalvin: so what combination did you use , do recall ?13:26
BluesKajyou13:26
alvinBluesKaj: It's an ASUS motherboard. There were 2 settings in the 'BIOS' (well...) 'UEFI only', and then a very interesing one. You could choose "UEFI first, then legacy oprom", "UEFI first", and two others. Don't ask me what the difference is.... I set it to "UEFI first". After that, there's no "legacy BIOS". I UEFI booted the Windows installer, and installed. Then, I resized the disk (from within Windows 8.1) to make room for Kubuntu. After13:29
alvinthat, I booted the Kubuntu installer, installed on that part and put the boot loader on /dev/sda. Now, your UEFI will want to boot Windows only, and you will NOT see grub and NOT get a choice. So, I changed the UEFI thing (BIOS) to boot from the Kubuntu part. That shows the grub boot loader with all choices.13:29
alvinAnd all is well.13:29
* BluesKaj nods , thanks alvin13:31
alvinnp13:31
BluesKajokk , bbl13:32
alvinOH, a very important other thing. I do think I used a LiveCD to write a GPT disk label on the empty disk first. Just to be sure.13:32

Trel_mobileWhen I do apt-get install kdm, it uninstalls plasma-desktop (and a number of othet kde components), does it do that for you too?20:13
Trel_mobileOn a fresh kubuntu install.20:13
geniilightdm-kde-greeter is new login, kdm is deprecated and soon unsupported20:13
Trel_mobileI dislike lightdm, hence why I installed kdm20:14
Trel_mobileBut i have to reinstall plasma each time I do20:14
douglTrel_mobile, I am quite happy with kde's config on my end I don't see the point in messing with my system... I will try it just to see the output if you want, I can pm my output...20:16
douglwhat don't you like about lightdm?20:16
* dougl pretends he knows the difference...20:17
Trel_mobileYes, you don't have to do the install, I just want to see if it marks a lot of kde components for removal for anyone else.20:17
douglk20:17
Trel_mobileI have a long list, but some include certain configuration option, themes that exist for kdm but not lightdm, login style, and how it manages available sessions.20:18
Trel_mobileFrankly it doesn't really feel like part of kde either.20:18
douglnope just kicks in to a kdm config screen that the only option I hav e is to say ok... knew I shouldn't have tried it - hope it did not fuck up my box20:19

Usr_good evening. I try to install Kubuntu to my hdd, but installation always fails at "post-installation-trigger init-ramfs"22:27
=== claydoh_ is now known as claydoh
Usr_any known solutions for this problem?22:32
Usr_anyone here?22:37
soeeUsr_: yes a lot of people22:38
soeei can't help you i bever experienced such problem22:38
Usr_could this be caused because of a too small /boot partition?22:40
Usr_i don't find any recommendations about the prefered size...22:40
geniiConceivably. However, the initrd doesn't occupy a lot of space, really.22:41
Usr_it has 100 MB22:41
Usr_does it require an own boot partition?22:41
Usr_when i use the auto-partitioner, it would format an whole harddisc...22:42
Usr_And for the manual partitioning, it doesn't recomends anything22:42
geniiUsr_: If you are using a common filesystem like ext2/3/4 doesn't really need it's own separate /boot ... but some fs that you might want to use for root fs like reiser/btrfs/xfs or so on need a separate ext2/3/4 /boot partition22:43
Usr_i want to use ext422:43
soeeso i suggest 2 partition, 1 for / and 2 for /home :)22:43
soeeGRUB is going to be installed on first one22:44
soeealso verify your image if is ok22:44
Usr_With the check imideately after booting from it?22:45
Usr_i did, it is ok22:45
Usr_when i tried installing the first time, it offered to use the free space on my hard disk to install it there. from the 2nd try, i can only choose "use entire disc" or manual22:46
Usr_the disk has ~295GB free space22:46
Usr_oh... number of partitions on a disc is limited, right?22:48
genii4 primary max, yes22:49
Usr_maybe that's the problem22:50
geniiCan't boot off an extended partition also22:50
Usr_do i need a swap-partition when i don't want to suspend to disc?22:52
geniiUsr_: It's usually good to have even if you don't want to suspend, since it could get used for other things like when the computer is doing something intensive using a lot of ram22:59
Usr_is the checkbox for "install updates during installation" inverted? oO23:00
Usr_This time i didn't checked it and it downloads a lot. Before i checked it, and it didn't download anything23:00
Usr_(but the language packs)23:00
Usr_this time it worked oO23:05
