GridCubeshuvarek, if you have a dedicated /home just reinstall00:00
shuvarekbtw the only other de I have right now on this system is lxde and I installed it only because xfce crashed00:00
shuvarekMaybe my /home could be a problem, I have few othere systems, (but I have not used it for a while now), and most of them use /home00:01
GridCubemmm00:01
shuvarek(I use special partition for /home)00:01
GridCubeyes that can be a problem00:01
holsteinshuvarek: sure.. one of them could be corrupting your xfce session00:01
holsteinshuvarek: i would create a new users to test with00:02
shuvarekbut I have different names for users in different systems00:02
holsteinshuvarek: this is a quick test, friend.. dont over think it.. literally make a new user called "test"..00:02
shuvarekI have never try this way00:03
shuvarekmaybe this is an idea?00:03
holsteinshuvarek: im not suggesting you switch to this user.. im saying, if the new user can load XFCE, then, you cant fix xfce by reinstalling it00:03
shuvarekThank you for that thing00:03
shuvarekbut how about reinstalling the xfce completely (I am now using lxde) and then install it again00:04
shuvarekwhich packages I shold purge / delete then?00:04
shuvarekor which files delete?00:04
Ethan[]this is very weird. I have plenty of free space and can do most things normally, but doing anything with dpkg or apt reports "No space left on device". I don't have separate partitions for anything except /boot/efi. any idea how that could be happening?00:08
shuvarekOkay, thanks, I will try to login as new user and seewht happend, thankj you guys for help00:08
holsteinEthan[]: emptying the trash?00:10
holsteinEthan[]: not sure without looking at it first hand00:11
Ethan[]I have 8.6 GB free00:11
holsteinEthan[]: how are you determining that? and what are you doing that is failing? and what are the messages?00:11
Ethan[]df -h says that. dist-upgrade failed to update linux-headers with the message "No space left on device", and then when I have done anything since then says I need to run dpkg --configure -a. when I run that, it too fails with "No space left on device"00:13
Ethan[]but, should have plenty of space00:13
holsteinEthan[]: close other package managers..00:14
holsteinsudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade ...and report errors00:14
shuvarekHello again and thank you for the help00:14
shuvarekusing different user helped to start xfce again00:15
holsteinshuvarek: so, the issue is on your /user/home00:16
shuvarekhave a question - which files I should delete (or mv) to let the xfce start again from the previous user?00:16
holsteinshuvarek: i would just move them.. whatever i would think could cause the issue.. the .hidden ones00:16
Ethan[]holstein: nothing is open. apt-get update errors out with "No space left on device". dist-upgrade errors out with "No space left on device". there is plenty of space on the filesystem.00:16
holsteinshuvarek: i might move them all.. and test.. then put back the ones i need/want, and test again00:17
holsteinEthan[]: what is determining the space?00:17
shuvarekprobably almost this same amount of work as doing with another install00:18
shuvarekmaybe use git for home would be good idea?00:18
holsteinshuvarek: git sill sync the problems00:19
holsteinshuvarek: i think git would be overkill00:19
shuvarekdo you know another program which can help you went back to settings (in home) when something go wrong?00:19
holsteinshuvarek: i just deal with it manually like this.. but im not interested in cloning or versioning config files00:20
shuvarekI know that git it could be security risky specially if I decide to use github or so, and I never try it before, but maybe just to point it only on the . files and .locale00:21
shuvarek(I mean .local)00:22
shuvarekand where are the files for xfce (I do not knwo yet)00:22
=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
holsteinshuvarek: i literally open a file manager, and i choose to leave things that i want in place. such as for the browser.. then, i start moving *everything* that i feel might be the issue. then i reboot and test00:24
shuvarekholstein: I think you are right, just in case probably I will try to play with git as I said before with the . files (better latter then never)00:26
shuvarekI have to also learn which files use xfce so it would be less work for the future00:27
holsteinshuvarek: you dont know that its the xfce files00:27
holsteinshuvarek: you just know its in your user /home...00:27
shuvarekI think xfce read it and this is why it cannot start properly00:28
shuvarekholstein: if not, what would be the problem?00:29
holsteinshuvarek: anything that could hang the session loading00:30
shuvarekholstein: you see, this is not the first time, I used before xubuntu 12.04 and I had to install lxde as now00:31
holsteinshuvarek: you chose to install lxde00:32
shuvarekholstein: I like xfce because it reminds me gnome which I used before (after kde3)00:32
holsteinshuvarek: that didnt fix this issue.. all im saying is, if the other user loads xfce, and your user doesnt, you still cant assume that its an xfce config causing that.. it could be another config00:32
shuvarekholstein: maybe I should go back to Trinity - I have not used it yet00:32
holsteinshuvarek: we can only assume from that that the issue is in the user config and not in the main system somewhere00:33
shuvarekholstein: understan - yes you are right00:33
holsteinshuvarek: what do i do? i remove the .config's and test.. if i really want to pinpoint what has happened, i do them one at a time, or a few at a time00:33
holsteini dont know what trinity is00:33
shuvarekthere were some errors even when I started as different user (but I could not send them as the password - for the previous user does not work)00:34
shuvarekholstein: so there are probably some problems, I still have one partition to install something new00:35
shuvarekholstein: Trinity is KDE300:35
holsteinshuvarek: kubuntu uses kde00:36
shuvarekholstein: www.trinitydesktop.org00:36

holsteinshuvarek: kde uses kde400:37
holsteinshuvarek: trinity is not kde00:37
holsteinshuvarek: would you like to continue in the offtopic channel?00:37
shuvarekholstein: Trinity is this same for kde as mate is for gnome00:37

knomeshuvarek, please continue on the offtopic channel, #xubuntu-offtopic00:38

cfhowlettpeyam, so eliminated the causes individually and in sequence.12:53

peyamBut I think I will stick to 14.04 for a long time. the passion for new stuff will die as older as I become12:57
Myrttithen why haven't you upgraded to 13.10?12:58
cfhowlettpeyam choose a path.  if you want LTS get LTS.  but if you enabled the dev. repos's   then you have to install 13.10 manually and THEN you can see the dev  of 14.0412:58
* cfhowlett suspects there might some confusion here 12:58
* ObrienDave agrees12:59
peyamcfhowlett, 13.10 was a disappointment. xubuntu group is very good at development and hold the planing as they should.12:59
peyam13.10 had lots of issues that's why I sticked to 13.0412:59
cfhowlettpeyam, so again: NOT LTS.  check your repo settings.  if your machine is confused as you seem to be indicating that would explain much13:00
peyamIm confused. What are you talking about?13:01
peyamMyrtti, BEcouse 13.10 had major issues13:01
peyam13.04 was more stable that its younger brother13:01

peyamI red somewhere that mplayer bring decoders from windows. I might read wrong13:07
peyambut what is the different between vlc and mplayer in simple words13:07
cfhowlettpeyam, you read wrong.13:07
cfhowlettpeyam, all players use the installed codecs - ubuntu-restricted-extras.  no codecs, no play.  doesn't matter what the player is.13:08
ObrienDavevlc is a front-end for mplayer, IIRC13:08
Poisoned_Dragon?!13:08

Poisoned_DragonI thought vlc had it's own codec libs.13:09
Sysibot probably use libvacodec13:09
Poisoned_DragonI don't have mplayer installed and vlc plays everything.13:09
Sysibut vlc is not frontend for mplayer13:09
cfhowlettas I understand it ALL the players access the same bank of codecs ... but I have been know to be wrong.13:09
Poisoned_Dragonlol13:10
Poisoned_DragonYes, in terms of vlc, you are wrong. :)13:10
ObrienDavemy mistake, *goes back to my coffee*13:10
Poisoned_Dragonvlc has it's own codecs. That's why the install is so big13:11
peyamI turned the light on in my room. finally13:11
Poisoned_DragonI believe the install is in the neighborhood of 30+ megs.13:11
Poisoned_Dragonnot including pulled packages.13:12
cfhowlettPoisoned_Dragon, does VLC inlcude the restricted codecs?13:12
Poisoned_DragonIt doeesn't pull restricted codecs as a needed package.13:12
Poisoned_DragonI can play all files on vlc with no codecs installed in a given distro.13:13
cfhowlettPoisoned_Dragon, interesting13:13
Poisoned_DragonI know. :)13:14
Poisoned_DragonMost distros I install, I kill the built-in players. Totem, Parole, etc....13:15
Poisoned_DragonThen install vlc13:15
peyamme too. But I use smplayer. I got tired of vlc beeing slow13:15
Poisoned_Dragonmeh, not slow for me.13:15
peyamit killes me when it does this :http://i572.photobucket.com/albums/ss162/Hatryst/sillyvlc.png13:16

bgardnersyeekick: And /var/log is correct for logs.  This sounds like an X problem, try reviewing /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see if anything there is helpful.17:56
syeekicknow changing drivers see if that fixes it brb for 2hours18:07

amjjawadmy simple Q is18:53
amjjawaddoes Ubuntu support VIA CPU?18:53
PiciYes, but 512MB of RAM is very little.18:54
Pici!requirements18:54
ubottuThe hardware requirements for Xubuntu can be found at http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/18:54
knomeif it doesn't support PAE, you won't be able to install any 13.10 version on it18:54
Piciknome: oops, forgot about that.18:54
amjjawadbut Ubuntu 'does' support VIA CPU????18:55
amjjawadcorrect????18:55
amjjawadI know about the system requirments of Xubuntu guys :D18:55
amjjawadI have reported a bug against the website of Xubuntu to corret the system requirement. My Q if Ubuntu suports VIA CPUs or not?18:56
amjjawadknome: Xub 12.04 is using NON-PAE Kernel, correct?18:56
GridCubeonly the alternate19:02
GridCubeif im not mistaken lubuntu still has non-pae support, if it does then you can install lubutnu and then sudo apt-get xubuntu-desktop19:03
bazhangdidnt the mini replace the alternate?19:10
bazhang!alternate19:10
ubottuThe alternate CD has been discontinued for the main Ubuntu distro, please use and report any bugs in the !LiveCD19:10

ObrienDaveDidn't know which package to file that bug against20:33

ObrienDaveThe xubuntu live session login bug20:34
elfyand this would be better in -devel or ubuntu-quality :)20:34
elfyObrienDave: not sure if we're talking about the same bug or not20:34
ObrienDaveOk, I'll read the testcase again to be sure20:35

JackTIMHey guys. I've got an oddball issue with my sound, and googlefu isn't helping. Certain games (like minecraft) and software (like firefox) either lack sound or the sound is choppy. If I open the volume control program it clears up and I get proper sound. Any ideas?21:28
ochosiJackTIM: do you use anything out of the ordinary?21:30
JackTIMAs far as? I think the audio programs are Alsa Mixer and Pulse Audio. The desktop is XFCE (xubuntu session). As far as anything else being "out of the ordinary" you'll have to be more specific.21:31
JackTIMAlso, the audio will only stay clear so long as I keep the volume control window open.21:31
ochosiJackTIM: well, could be that you're not using the standard audio drivers, use an external soundcard, or the jack low latency audio server21:32
ochosithere are many options21:32
ochosii just wanna get that out of the way first21:32
ochosiare you using stock xubuntu, i.e. a default install21:33
JackTIMYes. I don't think I've modified anything about the sound, or baseline stuff. I'm still rather untrained in Linux.21:33
ochosiok, good to know21:34
Unit193I killed and disabled pulse a few days ago since it was acting up.21:34
ochosiJackTIM: well the next question would be what version of xubuntu you're using21:34
JackTIM13.10, I do know that it affects my sound from the sound card as well as the USB headset I have.21:34
ochosihm, odd, i don't think i've ever experienced or heard of that issue before21:36
ochosiso it only happens with specific programmes?21:36
JackTIMSkype, Minecraft/Java, and Firefox.21:37
JackTIMAt least, that I've noticed. I really don't use much else in terms of audio.21:37
ochosifirefox = youtube?21:37
ochosiso you're sure it's not a performance issue i guess?21:37
JackTIMI can't say I've encountered it on youtube. But there is a similar issue using the Netflix-Desktop setup that requires me to end the video, restart pulse audio (pulseaudio -k if that's important) to fix a framerate acceleration (and by association an audio acceleration).21:39
JackTIMAlthough switching the setup to Netflix via a silverlight wine wrapper thing (I believe is how it works) and a User Agent Display changer may have fixed that part.21:40
JackTIMBut having experienced the problem makes me wonder if it isn't pulse.21:40
ochosiit's possible21:40
ochosiyou can uninstall it if you want21:40
ochosior kill it and use alsa21:40
JackTIMAnd with the exception of audio, and a few miscellaneous errors, I've had almost no problems running Xubuntu.21:41
ochosithat could be a workaround in case it's really pulse that messes things up21:41
ochosithat's nice to hear21:41
Unit193Have to set it to not autospawn in .config/pulse/client.conf21:42
ochosiyup, that is if you don't uninstall it ^21:43
JackTIMWhat does that do exactly?21:43
ochosiwhat does what do?21:43
JackTIMSetting it to not autospawn.21:43
Unit193Then it won't come back when you use pulseaudio -k21:46
JackTIMSo it just makes Pulseaudio stay shut down?21:46
ochosibasically21:48
JackTIMOkay, killed and uninstalled Pulse. Cleared it up entirely.21:58
JackTIMThanks alot guys. The Alsa volume control looks better than pulse also.21:59
Unit193The indicator won't work with just alsa, so volti or volumeicon might be used.21:59
JackTIMThanks Unit, I was about to ask ^_^22:00
Unit193Wow, ESP be a workin' ;)22:00
ochosigood to hear it's working ok22:01
JackTIMAny recommendations for PDF viewers?22:15
xubuntu283hi, new linux user here, i have no sound, shecked the ubantu website and fallowed the directions there, it says the card is installed, the volume is up and the speakers have worked before this, also installed alsa, and still no luck22:16
Unit193JackTIM: Not evince?22:17
JackTIMI can't really find one that operates all that fast. They mostly operate at the same speed.22:18
slickymasterJackTIM, try okular22:18
slickymasterJackTIM, http://packages.ubuntu.com/okular22:18
JackTIMI'm used to using Foxit Reader for Windows.22:19
slickymasterI must say that I never used Foxit22:20
xubuntu283any ideas about the sound problem?22:21
JackTIMslickymaster: Foxit generally worked a lot better than the Adobe Acrobat Reader.22:23
JackTIMxubuntu283: I'll probably need a more experienced linux person to back me up on this, but according to a few help pages I read, as well as current experience, you might want to try disabling pulse audio.22:24
JackTIMProvided you haven't removed it already.22:24
xubuntu283ok, how would i be able to disable it, just a quick explane is fine22:25
