xubuntu046ArcadiHi, I have problem with vmware player instalation. If I try to install vmware player in Ubuntu software center, after few seconds pop up emplty debconf window and instalation is frozen...00:00
xubuntu046Arcadi*empty00:00
xubuntu046ArcadiIn procesing part of Ubuntu software center is VMware, but do nothing. I cant cancel it.00:01
xubuntu046ArcadiI try to reboot, after reboot is procesing part empty, but if I try reinstall, I bee at same situation.00:01
xubuntu046ArcadiCan you help me?00:02
patasHello, I've been trying to connect two GPU (Sapphire 7970 GHz) to a Gigabyte mobo (990fxa-UD5). My system is Xubuntu 12.04.3 (64bit). First, I installed Xubuntu. Second I installed AMD Catalyst drivers, when drivers install is finished I reboot, then Xubuntu starts but complaining about a 'ERROR - X needs to be running to perform AMD Overdrive(TM) commands' and Xubuntu GUI doesn't start just the shell. Help me please. Thanks.00:11
GridCubepatas, from the shell, can you try to run xinit?00:16
patasyes, i did but without success00:18
patasI don't remember the message but it was another error.00:19
patasDo you think it could be related to some issue on the mobo? I mean something in the BIOS...00:21
GridCubei would not bet on that00:22
GridCubei would blame the ati drivers first00:22
patasThe first time I installed Ubuntu on that mobo only Ubuntu 32bit ran. 64bit didn't recognised neither the keyboard or mouse. Then I found out that enabling IOMMU controller in the BIOS was the solution. So I thought the BIOS could be the answer now.00:29
patasBut, I tried both beta and stable version of drivers...00:33
patasDo you think it's a good idea remove the drivers and reinstall them?00:34
Orioathats what i would do...use the one that says it is recomended00:44
patasI'll try. thanks.00:48

amjjawadHello elfy :)10:36
* ObrienDave thinks elfy is AFK10:37
amjjawadObrienDave, no problem :) nothing urgent :) thank you!10:38
ObrienDavewelcome10:39
Unit193amjjawad: This is a support channel, if you have a question just ask and anyone that's here right now and knows will likely answer.10:47
amjjawadUnit193, I am aware of that, thank you :) I have nothing urgent and I have no support Q :) thank you again :)10:49
amjjawadUnit193, but since you are here, an IRC Q just now popped into my mind. When someone clicks on my name here on IRC, I want him/her to see some details like my Wiki Page. How can I do that?10:53
Unit193May not be the right channel for that, I don't know what client, look up the realname config for it though.10:54
ObrienDavehmm, AFAIK whois is as close as one could get10:55
Unit193yep.10:55
elfythat's offtopic for here though10:55
elfyhello amjjawad10:55
Unit193Best to ask the channel rather than targetting people.10:55
amjjawadelfy, hello :) and I know this is off-topic ;)10:55
Myrtti/msg nickserv help set property10:56
amjjawadObrienDave, I know "whois" will display that but I want it to display my wiki page10:56
amjjawadthat what I was asking but again, nothing urgent nor serious10:56
Myrttithen set your wikipage as your realname10:56
amjjawadamjjawad is my IRC name and Wiki Page as well10:57
MyrttiI think you're confused with what IRC is then10:57
Unit193Sounds like.10:58
amjjawad"<Unit193> Best to ask the channel rather than targetting people." << Unit193 what do you mean?10:58
Myrttibesides, you're not registered on this IRC network so technically amjjawad isn't 'your IRC name'10:59
amjjawad3 years ago, I did that but I am not an IRC type of user and I guess I will never be :) I just don't like it much :)11:00
amjjawadnever mind, it seems I am asking a hard Q in the wrong place :)11:01
Myrttino, you're just not getting the answers you want11:01
cfhowlettamjjawad, ?? start buntu amjjawad11:01
Myrttithe question is easy11:01
cfhowlett?11:01
elfyMyrtti: indeed11:01
amjjawadcfhowlett, yep11:01
amjjawadMyrtti, never mind, please ignore my Q :)11:02
cfhowlettamjjawad, as you didn't answer my email: the ubuntustudio logo is wrong.  I've got the official logo if you want it ...11:02
amjjawadcfhowlett, I am not answering any email because I am so busy in Real Life with my campaign/Project11:02
amjjawadbut I have seen it. And I am not the one who created the artwork, it is Rafael, Lubuntu Artwork Team Leader so I will let him know :)11:03
cfhowlettamjjawad, noted ... does make it problematic to communicate with you, however ...11:03
elfycan we take the offtopic stuff elsewhere please11:03
cfhowlettelfy, right.  sorry11:03
amjjawadelfy, do you have an offtopic channel?11:03
ObrienDave#xubuntu-offtopic11:04
amjjawadObrienDave, thanks :)11:04
amjjawadhope my next Q is NOT offtopic :)11:17
amjjawadXubuntu 12.04 and Xubuntu 13.10 = I have noticed that 12.04 is much stable and faster. Is it only me?11:17
amjjawadobviously it is stable but it is faster too!11:17
sambalIs there a way I can default ubuntu 13.10 to boot to command line only and not to GUI by default? When I want, I want to be able to launch XFCE11:18
TheSheepamjjawad: what is faster exactly?11:18
amjjawadTheSheep, everything11:18
Myrttiif you've tried them in succession on the same device then it's no surprise if the older one is faster. It's always a tradeoff.11:19
amjjawadI have installed Xubuntu 12.04 on HP Mini VIA C7 M CPU with 512MB RAM and it is going great11:19
Myrttisambal: I'm sure there's a way to set up so lightdm doesn't automatically start11:19
sambalMaybe you can check what is running in 13.10 that you want to stop, if you do not need11:19
TheSheepsambal: sure, just disable lightdm in the boot scripts11:19
amjjawadLubuntu 13.10 failed to be installed on that machine so I had to choose Xub 12.0411:19
sambalMyrtti: But even if lightdm does not start, will networking start up?11:19
Myrttisambal: sure11:20
sambalGood :)11:20
Myrttithey're not related11:20
Unit193sambal: Change /etc/default/grub and add  text  to defualt options11:20
Unit193(So,  quiet splash text, or remove those others for text log.)11:20
sambalSo the laptop can still connect to the wifi without me having to give the details?11:20
cubamjjawad, do you have any figures to support that or is it user experience that "everything is faster"?11:21
sambalI thought the wifi negotiation happened after I logged onto XFCE.11:21
amjjawadcub, my findings :)11:22
amjjawadI am converting my neighborhood to Linux and I am using Xubuntu 12.04 as my first choice unless the machine is super weak and low11:22
sambalWell, if 12.04 is working fine, just use it, man11:23
amjjawad11 laptops have been converted so far and Xubuntu 12.04 was installed on many of these even the one with 512MB RAM where 13.10 releases failed11:23
amjjawadsambal, this is what I am using on 'my' personal machines recently. I have switched from Lub to Xub11:24
amjjawad but when I asked on the mailing list the other day, many advised to use the latest 13.1011:24
amjjawadI guess I will stick to 12.04 and wait for 14.0411:24
MyrttiI can't remember if 12.04 was LTS for Xubuntu11:24
ObrienDaveyes11:24
amjjawadYes Myrtti it is11:24
sambalamjjawad: Yep, just stick to what works :) You can upgrade whatever packages are needed11:25
amjjawadcan I then upgrade 'directly' from 12.04 to 14.04 without going through 13.04 and 13.10 ???11:25
Myrttithen sure, if there's no glaring problems with 12.04, use it11:25
ObrienDaveamjjawad, yes11:25
Myrttithat's the goal at least11:25
sambalMy 13.10 install is not 30 mins done yet. Slowly downloading stuff11:25
cubamjjawad, yes you should be able to upgrade from LTS to the next LTS11:25
amjjawadthat is great news :D11:25
sambalWhat makes you think 14.04 will install where 13.10 failed? :o11:26
amjjawaddo you expect a newcomers to Linux to be able to do that alone?11:26
cubamjjawad, you mean upgrade?11:26
amjjawadcub, yes11:26
sambalYou can tell them what to do :p Edit 1 file, and then upgrade11:26
amjjawadnote that they are totally NEW :)11:27
Myrttisambal: there's not file editing involved, just one command11:27
Myrttis/not/no/11:27
sambalSee, even better, amjjawad11:27
sambalThey just execute a command11:27
amjjawadbut I keep a list of their names and phone numbers etc and they are not so far but the number is increasing day after day11:27
sambalI used to edit the sources.list file, but if there is a command, can just use it11:27
cubI'm not sure which thread we're talking about now. New users being able to upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04? Or new users being able to use 12.04 and upgrade some packages?11:27
sambalThe first one, cub11:28
amjjawadI am talking about the upgrade process from 12.04 to 14.0411:28
sambalIs there a package that helps to find the fastest mirror?11:29
Myrttisambal: you can do that from the gui11:29
sambalMyrtti: What to use?11:29
Myrttiatleast if things aren't too different from main Ubuntu11:29
amjjawadsambal, I usually go to Synaptic and change the server if needed11:30
sambalDo you get a list of servers there?11:30
amjjawadsambal, sure I do11:30
amjjawadI choose "select best server"11:31
Myrttihttp://askubuntu.com/a/3782511:31
cubI believe the Software Updater will announce that there's is a new version to upgrade to and ask the user if they want to upgrade to 14.04? Should be as "simple" as Windows Update or the Mac updates11:31
Myrtticub: indeed11:31
sambalI don't think Synaptic is installed by default on my laptop11:31
sambalAnd this is a clean 13.10 install11:31
amjjawadcub, yes, I am aware but for a newcomer, I just don't want them to mess around with their installation11:32
amjjawadsambal, oh, I am using 12.04 right now so not sure about 13.1011:32
Myrttisambal: there should be an equivalent of software sources or similar11:32
Myrttiif nothing else, you should get there from the software updater options11:32
sambalThere is. Software manager, or something11:33
amjjawadsudo apt-get install synaptic11:33
amjjawadI am not a fan of Software Centers11:33
sambalYeah, installed synaptic. Let me check that.11:33
amjjawadsambal, sure :) tyt11:33
amjjawadI want to do a test. I want to 'force' upgrade 12.04 to Trusty11:34
amjjawadcan someone please remind me how to do that?11:34
Myrttisudo do-release-upgrade -d If I remember right11:35
sambalBah. There are 2 mirrors in Singapore.11:35
sambalExcellent.11:35
amjjawadMyrtti, and no need to change anything else? a file or something, right?11:35
Myrttiwell11:35
Myrttido you have ppa's set up?11:35
sambalapt-get update took 5 seconds. Down from 3-4 minutes11:35
amjjawadMyrtti, for the test I want to do, nop11:36
amjjawadsambal, wow, super nice ... enjoy :D11:36
Myrttithen it probably just works11:36
amjjawadMyrtti, thanks, I will do a fresh new installation for Xub 12.04 on my test machine (P4 with less than 512MB RAM) and test that :)11:36
sambalAny of you here use LateX or TeX/11:39
amjjawadgrrr. no default or UI configuration found :/11:39
amjjawadhttp://phillw.net/hardware/BnA9pw11 << my test machine11:40
Myrttisambal: sure11:40
amjjawadand I am using the same LiveUSB I have used to do 10 installations of Xub 12.04 :/11:40
ObrienDavedisk went bad?11:40
amjjawadI just used it a while ago and it worked :(11:41
amjjawadmy test PC does not like my LiveUSB11:41
ObrienDavewhat's a "while ago"11:41
ObrienDavenever mind, assumed DVD11:41

amjjawadit says: Error, no configuration file found - No default or UI config directive found11:43
sambalIs there a post install script that I can run to check and install packages if I want to?11:44
amjjawadsambal, there is a command that lists all the installed packages but I forgot it :(11:45
sambalUm11:45
sambaldpkg -l | grep ii will give me the installed packages11:45
sambalI don't want that.11:45
amjjawadhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/17823/how-to-list-all-installed-packages11:45
amjjawadis this what you want?11:45
sambalPost install - a walkthrough to let me know if I have missed out on things. Like install some restricted codes, or fonts, etc11:46
amjjawadsambal, not sure but I always do: apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras after each and every install11:46
amjjawadthat is more than enough for me. Then add step my step the programs I need to use like GParted, Shotwel, VLC, etc11:47
sambalamjjawad: Oh okay11:48
sambalJust ran that11:48
amjjawadsambal, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats11:48
sambalWhat is shotwel?11:49
Myrttiphoto management software11:49
amjjawadMyrtti, I can't dig deeper into the LiveUSB and why it is not booting now so I will upgrade 13.10 to Trusty and then try maybe with a virtual machine for 12.04 to TT11:49
amjjawadsambal, I use it to crop the images and I like it11:49
amjjawadit is the default with Ubuntu GNOME :)11:50
amjjawaddo-release-upgrade -d ... upgrading 13.10 to Trusty in progress :)12:14
* ObrienDave is not that brave ;P12:14
knomethis isn't the right channel to discuss that12:15
amjjawadknome, ?12:15
knomeamjjawad, trusty isn't released; you can discuss upgrading to it in #ubuntu+112:16
amjjawadI have been discussing with the guys here about how to do upgrade, etc12:16
amjjawadI did not know it is NOT allowed :)12:16
amjjawadwhy everything is not allowed here? this is the 2nd time :)12:16
amjjawadno one told me to take that elsewhere - about upgrading12:17
amjjawadanyway, it is ok!!!!12:17
* cfhowlett thinks installing a pre-alpha release is ... not adviseable12:21
ObrienDaveit's not on their main computer ;)12:23

greenmockingbirdok so i've tried adding my script to rc.local and /etc/profile.d/ and no luck14:32
greenmockingbirdtried using the gui and manually added it to session/startup application autostartup but the script still does not start when the system boots14:33
greenmockingbirdany ideas?14:33
greenmockingbirdthe script is executable and I can call it manually from terminal14:33
greenmockingbirdohhhhh now i can't call that script directly.....14:35
greenmockingbirdok fixed that, now the script runns when called directly14:36
greenmockingbirdfixed the autoboot issue with my grub so now this script is the last stumbling block before I call this experiment good...14:37
greenmockingbirdI will say that using linux is a learning experience14:37
Poisoned_Dragonwhat does the script do?14:39
greenmockingbirdit just runs cgminer14:44
Poisoned_Dragonoh... bitcoin stuff14:45
Poisoned_DragonWere you the one having X crashing issues?14:46
greenmockingbirdnoifixed that last night before i came here14:47
greenmockingbird i just cant get this script to autostart14:47
Poisoned_Dragonhmm...14:49
Poisoned_Dragondo you put the full path?14:49
greenmockingbirdi noticed when i go to rc.local it says i must modify execution bits14:49
koegsrc.local will call this script as root-user, most probably not what you want14:50
koegscan you nopaste that script?14:50
koegs!paste14:50

greenmockingbirdyeah one sec14:50
greenmockingbirdI added a line to rc.local its the only line I added and the only line other than exit 0 not commented out14:53
greenmockingbirdwth i cant paste it here..14:53
koegsgreenmockingbird: i want to see what you added to rc.local and i want to see the script14:54
greenmockingbirdworkig on that... /home/miner2/miner_launcher.sh 30 & is what I added to the rc.local14:55
greenmockingbirdthats is the only line I added to rc.local14:55
koegsand it should be executed as root or as user "miner2"14:56
greenmockingbirdbut the odd thing is after boot up I can ssh in and call miner_launcher.sh direct with ./miner_launcher.sh and it works correctly14:56
greenmockingbird!paste14:57

koegsgreenmockingbird: do you login as root via ssh or as miner2?14:59
greenmockingbirdminer214:59
greenmockingbirdis that why su doesnt work?14:59
koegsthen try the following in rc.local "su - miner2 -c /home/miner2/miner_launcher.sh 30 &"14:59
koegsmight be redundant but ok for a quick test14:59
greenmockingbirdright on one sec15:00

greenmockingbirddo i need to chmod +x rc.local?15:07
koegsno15:07
greenmockingbirdoh ok15:07
koegsjust use "su miner2 -c "screen -dmS cgm /home/miner2/mine_digitalcoins.sh" directly15:07

greenmockingbirdkoegs Thanks for the help man that worked first trry15:20
cubPerhaps this is a bit far fetched idea but: I can run a xubuntu in a virtualbox on my work laptop, or I can use a USB stick and boot into a xbuntu installed on that usb stick15:25
koegscub: you can do both15:26
cubWould it be possible to have a usb stick which I could run from within my work laptop directly?15:26
cubkoegs, how would I do both?15:26
assistentehttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2193298 solutions?15:27
koegscub: you can install xubuntu to a usb-stick just like you would install it to a harddrive, then boot the usb-stick15:27
Khephello here15:27
Khepim looking for a very simple but effective audio player for linux (in command line)...15:27
cubkoegs, but then I would "only" boot into xubuntu and can't use the mac os at the same time, as I do when running xubuntu through Virtualbox inside mac os15:27
koegscub: correct, if you want to use both at the same time, then i would use virtualbox15:28
cubI was hoping there would be a solution to combine them, so I could bring my usb stick home and continue in the exact same environment15:29
koegsas far as i know, most of the virtualization software is not able to boot from a usb-stick15:29
koegsso you might get it working somehow but not without a lot of effort15:30

us|0gbQuick question: Is everything at https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/xfce-4.10 free? I know not everything in Xubuntu is free, but I am hoping everything in that PPA is.16:29
GridCubeMatt___, boot in a live session, not the installer16:29
GridCubethen use boot-repair16:29
knomeus|0gb, it's as the normal xfce packages: yes it's free; please not that you are using the PPA on your own responsibility16:30
knome*note16:31
us|0gbknome: Thanks! Yeah, I know I use PPAs (or any added repositories) at my own risk. I installed a kernel one time from one, and it killed my VirtualBox installation. I wasn't able to fix it either, and had to reinstall the whole system.16:32
us|0gbIf Xfce4 bugs up on me, I should be able to recover my data from my partial LXDE desktop, then reinstall again.16:33
us`0gbMy top panel is now huge and the panel items are all on the left (before, some were on the right). I think deleting my Xfce configuration and letting the updated Xfce build new configuration may be in order.16:54
us^0gbMUCH better. It seems the Xfce configuration file format has changed, and is incompatible with old versions.16:59
