onetinsoldierhi all. i was wondering if someone might be able to help me get compositing working? do i need to have a /dev/dri/card0 for it to work? i have an error regarding that in my Xorg.log file(no such file or directory). i am using the fglrx driver01:45
Stanley00onetinsoldier: what's your ubuntu version?02:01
Stanley00onetinsoldier: and what's your video card?02:02
onetinsoldierStanley00: one sec02:04
onetinsoldierRelease:        14.0402:05
onetinsoldierCodename:       trusty02:05
onetinsoldier03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Pitcairn PRO [Radeon HD 7850] [1002:6819]02:05
onetinsoldierif i do the command... fglrxinfo ...i get02:06
onetinsoldierNo protocol specified02:06
onetinsoldierError: unable to open display (null)02:06
Stanley00OK, and what do you want by mean "compositing"?02:07
onetinsoldierStanley00: have you heard of a "compositing window manager"?02:07
Stanley00onetinsoldier: how did you install fglrx driver? As I remember, you must run some initial to use that driver.02:07
Stanley00onetinsoldier: yes? I know compositing wm,02:08
onetinsoldiercompiz is a compositing window manger.. you can enable compositing in kde, and e17 as well02:08
onetinsoldiercompositing is not working02:08
Stanley00onetinsoldier: but if you can use unity, then you got a compositing wm working02:08
onetinsoldiercompositing effects are not working. it's not a big deal. i don't have to have compositing working. i'd just like to get it working if possible02:10
Stanley00onetinsoldier: so, you just want to use some compiz effects, right?02:10
onetinsoldieryes. and in kde/e1702:11
onetinsoldierfor instance, when i had it working on older version of ubuntu in e17, some tutorial videos i used would stay "buffered"02:12
onetinsoldiernow, when i cover them with another window when i have the video paused, and then uncover the video window, it's black/blank, until it unpause it. just an example of one of the benefits02:13
Stanley00onetinsoldier: I don't get it, but look like you install the fglrx wrong. Did you run sudo aticonfig --initial after install fglrx driver?02:14
onetinsoldierno. i could try that, but have serious doubts it will do anything02:15
onetinsoldierdoesn't that create an Xorg.conf file?02:15
Stanley00onetinsoldier: yes, and it will load fglrx driver the right way.02:16
onetinsoldieri thought the Xorg.conf file wasn't really used anymore. but perhaps it is needed. i must say i don't really know02:16
Stanley00onetinsoldier: just try with that command, reboot and hope :D02:16
onetinsoldierokay. i'm willing to give it a try. i'll be back after rebooting. thanks and cheers02:17
onetinsoldierStanley00: hello, you here?02:42
Stanley00onetinsoldier: yes?02:43
onetinsoldierStanley00: thank you. that was it. aticonfig hadn't been initialized02:43
onetinsoldierthe xorg.conf file for the fglrx driver hadn't been created02:43
Stanley00onetinsoldier: glad it works :D02:44
onetinsoldieryes, thank you02:44
Stanley00you're welcome.02:44
