[01:45] hi all. i was wondering if someone might be able to help me get compositing working? do i need to have a /dev/dri/card0 for it to work? i have an error regarding that in my Xorg.log file(no such file or directory). i am using the fglrx driver [02:01] onetinsoldier: what's your ubuntu version? [02:02] onetinsoldier: and what's your video card? [02:04] Stanley00: one sec [02:05] Release: 14.04 [02:05] Codename: trusty [02:05] 03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Pitcairn PRO [Radeon HD 7850] [1002:6819] [02:06] if i do the command... fglrxinfo ...i get [02:06] No protocol specified [02:06] Error: unable to open display (null) [02:07] OK, and what do you want by mean "compositing"? [02:07] Stanley00: have you heard of a "compositing window manager"? [02:07] onetinsoldier: how did you install fglrx driver? As I remember, you must run some initial to use that driver. [02:08] onetinsoldier: yes? I know compositing wm, [02:08] compiz is a compositing window manger.. you can enable compositing in kde, and e17 as well [02:08] compositing is not working [02:08] onetinsoldier: but if you can use unity, then you got a compositing wm working [02:10] compositing effects are not working. it's not a big deal. i don't have to have compositing working. i'd just like to get it working if possible [02:10] onetinsoldier: so, you just want to use some compiz effects, right? [02:11] yes. and in kde/e17 [02:12] for instance, when i had it working on older version of ubuntu in e17, some tutorial videos i used would stay "buffered" [02:13] now, when i cover them with another window when i have the video paused, and then uncover the video window, it's black/blank, until it unpause it. just an example of one of the benefits [02:14] onetinsoldier: I don't get it, but look like you install the fglrx wrong. Did you run sudo aticonfig --initial after install fglrx driver? [02:15] no. i could try that, but have serious doubts it will do anything [02:15] doesn't that create an Xorg.conf file? [02:16] onetinsoldier: yes, and it will load fglrx driver the right way. [02:16] i thought the Xorg.conf file wasn't really used anymore. but perhaps it is needed. i must say i don't really know [02:16] onetinsoldier: just try with that command, reboot and hope :D [02:17] okay. i'm willing to give it a try. i'll be back after rebooting. thanks and cheers [02:42] Stanley00: hello, you here? [02:43] onetinsoldier: yes? [02:43] Stanley00: thank you. that was it. aticonfig hadn't been initialized [02:43] the xorg.conf file for the fglrx driver hadn't been created [02:44] onetinsoldier: glad it works :D [02:44] yes, thank you [02:44] you're welcome. === IdleOne is now known as io === mydogsnameisrudy is now known as monkeyjuice === amblin_ is now known as amblin === amblin is now known as Guest66558 === twager is now known as g3tpi === soee_ is now known as soee === nickoe_ is now known as nickoe [12:42] hiyas all
