[18:20] morning [18:40] morning [19:28] morning [20:26] morning [20:39] so part of the reason i thought a recent kernel upgrade made my system screwy [20:40] is that the trackpad got reenabled somehow [20:40] it's a thinkpad and i only use the nipple [20:40] so i clip the trackpad when typing and odd things happen [21:05] Yeah I turn mine off too [21:27] I just switched my Fn and Ctrl keys on my Thinkpad ... I'm much happier as a result [21:27] I don't use the nipple or the buttons above the trackpad [21:27] hads-test: can you remember how? :) [21:28] oh there's a button for it :) [21:28] chilts: weirdo [21:28] wut! [21:28] chilts: why have a thinkpad if you don't use the nipple? :) [21:28] 'coz work paid for it :D [21:28] though tbh i use an external keyboard & mouse almost all the time [21:28] though I do like it [21:29] me too [21:29] it's only when I'm out and about I use the trackpad anyway [21:29] chilts: which do you have? [21:29] W530 [21:29] the trackpad is pretty rubbish on my x220 [21:29] even more so in ubuntu than windows iirc [21:29] there are a few things I don't like, but it seems pretty sturdy [21:30] in some ways I wish I'd gone for a lighter model, but tbh it's mostly on my desk [21:30] and 16GB RAM is nice [21:30] so that I can have a hundred or so tabs open in Firefox (and no idea what is there) [21:31] i'm pretty happy with mine, more ram and more pixels would be nice, but it's not at all bad for 2.5 yrs old [21:32] ah, I remember, this one is 1920x1080 which is probably why I got it [21:33] I suspect in 2.5 years time I'll still be happy with it too, so that's good to know [21:33] mwhudson: Yeah, the button :) [21:34] I've got a T400 which is getting on a bit, I'm impatiently waiting on my Christmas present which is a T440s, the power adapter has arrived so far. [21:35] oh, that's the other thing I hate, the power brick really is a brick [21:35] I don't know how they get away with it [21:36] The new one is a slimmer wider brick. [21:37] With a square jack instead of round. [21:37] I've been waiting ages for a 14" Thinkpad with more screen real estate. Quite exciting. [21:38] chilts: that's what you get for buying a big thinkpad :) [21:38] the 60w supplies are much smaller [21:39] :/ [21:39] I'll note that for next time [21:39] I think I might try and find a replacement which is a bit more manageable [21:46] we are getting the Lenovo X1 Carbons as a standard laptop for staff at the moment, getting them without Windows. [21:47] * ibeardslee has a bit of adjustment with the trackpad and buttons etc [21:47] ibeardslee: was just looking at them, they seem nice [21:47] ibeardslee: can only be configured with 8gb ram though? [21:47] down side is the 8GB fixed [21:47] Yeah not bad but a bit limited. No built in Ethernet etc. [21:47] I have heard (not confirmed) that the next iteration will have able to have 16GB. [21:48] The T440s is a good alternative [21:48] for a lot of people the wireless is good enough, and with a USB ethernet adapter they behave pretty good. [21:48] Yeah for most people it would be fine. [21:50] ibeardslee: I recall (second hand) that circa 12 months ago, PXE booting was neigh-on-impossible with those USB adapters [21:50] if you ask Silicon nicely you can get the Lenovos without Windows [21:51] G: The only problem I had with the PXE boot while installing one yesterday was the firmware missing from the 12.04 (not 12.04.3) netboot we have setup. [21:52] ended up doing a USB stick boot [21:52] /install [21:52] ibeardslee: I think from the bug I recall seeing ended up getting fixed in the kernel, but for the life of me I can't remember when [21:52] This is the 440 series slim brick; http://imgur.com/l8MaXN7 [21:53] ibeardslee: ahh good, they must've fixed it, just thought I'd mention it anyway [21:54] it did the pxeboot fine, but failed with the install because of the missing firmware. [21:54] BUT different usb adapter may also behave differently.
