cem_hi07:14
cfhowlettcem_, greetings07:15
cem_how r u?07:15
cfhowlettcan07:15
cfhowlettcan't complain07:15
cem_:D07:15
cem_thank you very much07:15
cfhowlett? for?07:15
cem_u r standing there when i need u07:15
cfhowlettLOL.  okay07:15
cem_i need a small help if u r in ur convenience07:16
cfhowlettask away07:16
cem_i wanna add skype and evolution to system tray07:16
cem_how can i?07:16
cem_i cant find any settings for gnome sytemtry07:16
cfhowlettpanel > add new items07:17
cem_:(07:18
cem_i cant find panel07:18
cfhowlettcem_, gnome?  on ubuntu studio?07:18
cem_nope just ubuntu07:18
cem_:D07:18
cem_i know its studio part but other channel they are busy07:19
cfhowlettgo to your panel at the bottom and right click ...07:19
cem_im using cairo dock at bottom, i wanna add top bar right side items07:19
cem_and if i click right, nothing happens07:20
cfhowlettcem_, ah, CAIRO dock ... different animal.  I don't use so I can't help much.07:21
cem_its ok07:21
cem_thanx for typing me07:22
cem_i couldt install gnome on ubuntu stuido btw07:22
cfhowlettcem_, really?  surprising07:22
cem_i will make ubuntu 13.10 as my studio07:23
cfhowlettcem_, only get 9 months support with that ...07:23
cfhowlett12.04 is Long Term Support = 5 years ... same with 14.0407:23
cem_cuz i installed it from software center as u told me but i saw strange blue desktop like windows 3.1107:24
cfhowlettcem_, so it DID install then ...07:24
cem_yep but twas not like standart ubuntu desktop07:25
cem_so i install ubuntu desktop and install musescore ardour ...07:25
cfhowlettcem_, um , right?  standard ubuntu desktop is unity.  ubuntustudio does not use unity since it's on xubuntu07:25
cem_so im not in gnome?07:25
cfhowlettcem_, you did way too much work then.  neither require gnome07:26
cfhowlettcem_, I don't know exactly what you've done, merely stating that gnome isn't required.  why did you think you needed it?07:26
cem_cuz i just start with ubuntu 13.10 t was hillarius i tried some music applications they are good actually musescore just like sibelius07:27
cem_then i decide move my whole system to ubuntu07:27
cem_then i saw ubuntu made ubuntu studio for musicians i thought, yep all the softwares were ready on it but i liked first standart ubuntu07:28
cfhowlettcem_, maybe it's time you made some choices.  ubuntustudio selected xubuntu as that environment requires fewer system resources than vanilla ubuntu.  technically you can run ubuntustudio in unity, but you will probably notice performance hit unless your system is seriously amped up.07:29
cem_n want it back then i format again and install standart ubuntu07:29
cem_hmm07:29
cfhowlettcem_,  ah, well there it then.  stay with unity if you wish.  but note that vanilla ubuntu doesn't include the lowlatency kernel.  if you're making music, you're likely to see xruns (lags)07:30
cem_i installed low latency kernel on it too07:30
cem_3.11.0-14-lowlatency07:30
cfhowlettcem_, try this.  install xfce4 , logout, switch to xubuntu session and login.  that way you can see for yourself.07:30
cem_if u say this its true im believe in u07:31
cfhowlettcem_, costs you nothing to test the waters.  besides, the wallpapers and blue cool ubuntustudio look are way cool.07:32
cfhowletthttp://spreadubuntu.org/en/material/unusual/beautiful-ubuntu-ray-traced-wallpapers07:33
cem_i tried to custimize xfce on ubuntustudio, i thought its dark and dull for me07:34
cfhowlettcem_, definitely check out 14.04 - they're trying to enable a number of desktop environments.07:35
cem_wall papers are not problem i can change, i think all i need is cairo desktop and the bar at top07:35
cfhowlettcem_, use what works for you.07:35
cem_and i liked font styles colours07:35
cfhowlettcem_, fair enough.  so have you installed all of ubuntustudio or just ardour musescore?07:36
cem_w/e so if i make some records on unity, even if i have low latency kernel, my desktop system will use enormous amount system resorses? an i will get bad results on recodings?07:37
cem_just installed ardour and musescore and some effects like guitarix guitarrag07:37
cem_if its possible, and reasonable, and if its exist ubuntu studio effect pack, i wanna downlaod cuz i cant find all effects plugins one by one07:39
cfhowlettcem_, sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-recording will grab all the audio recording packages.  in fact, run apt-cache ubuntustudio for the list of packages07:39
cem_now i got it thanx :D07:39
cem_but im asking u again, will i get bad results on my recodings?07:40
cem_with the desktop im using?07:40
cfhowlettcem_, kernel should help but ardour will show the xruns.  if it gets excessive, consider using the lighter desktop.  lxde or xfce07:42
cfhowlettcem_, of course this also depends to large extent on your setup: external interface, pre-amps, all that stuff.07:43
cem_3g ram, focusrite scarlett 8i6 conroe 2.1307:43
cfhowlettcem_, not familiar but again, test and see.  ardour/jack will allow you to monitor xruns07:44
cem_on win, i have no problem, i dont think i will have latency problem on linux? only bad thing on linux is, my hdd dying when im playing dota on steam  :D07:45
cem_ok its early at morning here  i will try07:45
cfhowlettow.  painful07:45
cem_but everyhing is beautiful on linux  really like it07:46
cfhowlett:)07:46
cem_thanx for everything i will come back sooner or later :D i missed mirc days its like 15 years ago nostalgia :D07:48
cfhowlettsome things never change07:48
cem_yep i still smoking07:48
DermhyeHello09:01
cfhowlettDermhye, what's the word?09:02
DermhyeI have a troubling dilemma here... Coming from Windows background and like a more organised system like windows.09:02
cfhowlettDermhye, eh? you say you were born knowing windows and didn't have to learn anything to get comfortable with it?09:03
DermhyeMy preference software on this package is Blender. After installing Ubuntu Studio, I discovered it has an old version of Blender09:04
cfhowlettDermhye, 12.04 right?09:04
Dermhyelol... well learning to stay organised in windows was quiete easy...09:04
DermhyeNo... 13.1009:04
cfhowlettDermhye, new blender is not in the repo.   get it from the site and install manually.09:04
cfhowlettDermhye, again: learning curve ...09:04
DermhyeI downloaded the latest version from Blender from their website already... I followed the steps from this page (http://askubuntu.com/questions/110821/how-to-install-blender-from-the-official-website)09:05
Dermhyeabout learning... I want to learn something new that's why I am considering it to use Ubuntu... Enjoying it slightly yet...09:06
DermhyeOnly have a problem with the coding things...09:06
cfhowlettDermhye, you're a developer/coder?09:06
DermhyeBack to my issue... I can run the program from the location it is stored. But I wan to add it to my application list09:07
DermhyeI am just a computer user... Dont code at all09:07
DermhyeHow do I do that? Possibly make it appear on the list as it was originally before I removed the old blender09:08
DermhyeCan you help?09:08
cfhowlettDermhye, if the old blender entry is still in place, just edit it09:09
Dermhyeoh... by the way... thanks for yesterday... you helped me download the plugins for playing videos09:09
cfhowlettDermhye, no worriess09:09
DermhyeI already deleted that.09:09
cfhowlettDermhye, and the new blender did not create an icon/launcher?  tsk.09:10
DermhyeShould I install the old version again?09:10
cfhowlettDermhye, nope.09:10
cfhowlettjust need to copy the launcher from  blender to the preferred location.09:10
cfhowletttry this in a terminal: whereis blender09:11
Dermhyeno... I just extracted it according to that page and saved the folder to usr/lib09:11
Dermhyeok. let me try09:11
DermhyeThis is the returned line I got: blender: /usr/lib/blender /usr/share/blender09:12
cfhowlettI looked in /usr/bin/blender   the launcher is there.09:13
cfhowlettDermhye, how do you start blender now?09:14
DermhyeI saved the launcher to desktop and start from there.09:15
Dermhyebut I want to add it to application list. One of the reasons is for me to open files directly by clicking on them09:16
cfhowlettDermhye, halfway home.  just need to add the launcher either to xfce menu or launch bar09:16
cfhowlettDermhye, right click on the file, properties, open with ...09:17
Dermhyeok... how do I do that?09:17
DermhyeBlender is not on the list09:19
cfhowlettopen with    other application    use custom command   (path to blender here!)09:22
Dermhyeok09:22
cfhowlettyou'll need the blender launcher properties in that path space ...09:23
DermhyeThanks09:29
DermhyeIt worked.09:29
cfhowlettDermhye, it's all in the wrist09:30
DermhyeI still want it on my application list. how do I do that...09:30
cfhowlettDermhye, I don't know09:30
cfhowlettsorry09:30
Dermhyeno probs. thanks a lot.09:32
DermhyeI really appreciate your support09:32
cfhowlettDermhye, have fun, be safe09:33
cfhowlettalso the #xubuntu channel can help with your application list09:33
Dermhyeis there any document that tells about understanding Ubuntu's coding in the terminal emulator09:33
DermhyeI will like to know some basic things09:33
Dermhyealright. I am so grateful. I will check there soon09:34
Dermhyeyou have been really helpful09:34
DermhyeI like this community09:35
=== xnox_ is now known as xnox

DermhyeHi, I plugged in my headset and unplugged immediately only to discover the computer has been muted. How do I unmute please15:33
cfhowlettDermhye, left click on the speaker icon ...15:34
DermhyeIts just showing a white short bar just below it.15:34
cfhowlett!paste15:35

DermhyeMine is now showing that detailed option on the sound when I left click it.15:44
DermhyeI wish I could get my screen shot and show you15:45
DermhyeHello17:03
DermhyeI am back with my wahala17:03
DermhyeHow can I increase the volume of my pc17:03
holsteinDermhye: volume control?17:13
holstein!info pavucontrol17:13
ubottupavucontrol (source: pavucontrol): PulseAudio Volume Control. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.0-1 (saucy), package size 140 kB, installed size 953 kB17:13
holsteini use that, unless im using JACK, then i use the hardware controls17:13
holsteini would need more information.. "for the PC" could depend on many applications17:13
DermhyeI can see the speaker symbol on the taskbar, but when I click, I dont get anything. what can I do to activate it as my volume is mute now17:16
holsteinDermhye: depends really on what you did to mute it.. and what youa re comfortable with17:17
holsteini would try pavucontrol17:17
holsteinand also, in a terminal, alsamixer can be handy.. this is assuming you are *not* using JACK17:17
DermhyeI plugged in my headset and a volume bar showed up. I removed it immediately to change it and the was muted instantly. I dont know how to unmute17:19
holsteinDermhye: have you tried "pavucontrol" ?17:20
holsteinDermhye: if not, try it, right now.. and report if its not working foryou17:20
holsteinits quite extensive in its configuration17:20
DermhyeI dont know about pavucontrol... am i to type that in the terminal17:20
holsteinDermhye: or, since its likely you just switched to that device that you quickly plugged and removed, you could try just restarting the PC17:21
holstein!info pavucontrol | Dermhye17:21
ubottuDermhye: pavucontrol (source: pavucontrol): PulseAudio Volume Control. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.0-1 (saucy), package size 140 kB, installed size 953 kB17:21
DermhyeI have restarted like 4 times now17:21
holsteinDermhye: you can also use alsamixer to select the audio device17:22
Dermhye@ubottu, am I to type those in the terminal17:26
holsteinDermhye: ubottu is a bot.. i had it linkd the name of the application for you17:26
holsteinDermhye: you are to try and run pavucontrol and see if it meets your needs by allowing you to select the audio device you want to use17:27
Dermhyeok17:27
holsteinDermhye: you can also use "alsamixer" in the terminal17:27
holsteinDermhye: you will be able to set the default device that alsa is using17:28
Dermhyei used pavucontrol17:29
Dermhyeits working now.17:29
holsteinDermhye: contratulations17:29
Dermhyethis coding thing is discouraging me from the interest i have in linux17:30
Dermhyebut thanks17:30
holsteinDermhye: what "coding"?17:30
holsteinDermhye: what i read above is, you plugged a device in that doenst explicitly offer linux support.. linux tried to use it, and changed the default audio device17:31
Dermhyehaving to type in the terminal... One must have the idea of what language or thing to write17:31
holsteinDermhye: that would be likely to happen with *any* OS17:31
holsteinDermhye: you dont *have* to launch pavucontrol from the terminal17:31
Dermhyeamazing now, I am using the headset17:31
holsteinDermhye: you can click on anything from the menu item created, to any custom launcher you are welcome to and encouraged to create17:31
Dermhyeand its working17:31
holsteinDermhye: its not "coding" to fix something by launching an application17:32
Dermhyeok.... you have been of great help... appreciate so much17:32
holsteinDermhye: you could have that very same issue with plugging that device into a mac17:32
holsteinDermhye: or, an apple device into a windows PC17:32
Dermhyeactually17:33
holsteinDermhye: why would i suggest starting things from the terminal? its a way to have a common batch of commands17:35
holsteinDermhye: in linux, *everything* is open, and easy to customize and change.. if i ask you to type something in the terminal, i know that that wil work *exactly* as it works on my linux17:35
DermhyeI actually dont know anything about Ubuntu other than knowing its linux and I have no idea about the use of linux17:35
holsteinDermhye: or, at least, much more closely to the same. and i dont have to wonder if you are running XFCE, or what menu item to point you to17:36
holsteinDermhye: i can just say "copy this in the terminal".. and that is *not* coding17:36
holsteinDermhye: its a way to help you troubleshoot the issue you had by trying to do something advanced that could have been problematic on *any* operating system17:36
Dermhyealright. I am sure i will catch up soon.17:37
holsteinDermhye: or, you can purchase devices that support linux.. and they will "just work".. and you wont have to "catch up"17:37
DermhyeI dont think I can get Linux support devices around here.17:39
DermhyeLet me ask, why cant I get a response from left clicking the volume icon on the taskbar17:40
holsteinDermhye: nothing about linux is preventing anyone from supporting it17:41
holsteinDermhye: im not sure what you are clicking, or why.. but if i wanted to control an audio device, without JACK, i would use pavucontrol17:41
holsteinDermhye: its in the menu as "pulse audio volume control" IIRC17:41
Dermhyehwo do I get Jack17:42
holsteinDermhye: you dont need it17:43
holsteinDermhye: it shipps with ubuntustudio anyway17:43
Dermhyeok17:43
holsteinDermhye: you can read..17:43
holstein!proaudio17:43
ubottuFor information on professional audio tools in Ubuntu, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro17:43
Dermhyebut i need a smarter way to access volume control17:44
holsteinDermhye: my icon works.. and you might consider using something like stock xubuntu or main ubuntu17:45
holsteinDermhye: ubuntustudio could have tweaks that are not catering to "smarter ways to control volume"17:45
SonikkuAmericaDermhye: That being said, there's a bit coming to UStudio 14.04, including a signed -lowlatency image, so stick around... :)17:48
holsteinsure.. but, you might not need it17:50
Dermhyeholstein, from the link you sent about pro audio intro, what do they mean by Many cards?17:57
holsteinDermhye: where it says "many cards are muted by default"?18:03
holsteinDermhye: that means that, as in the cards, audio devices, many (implying a lot of them) will be muted by default.. meaning, you start the machine, and the audio is muted18:03
Dermhyeyes please18:03
Dermhyeok.18:04
DermhyeOr Do I re install my  ubuntu version cos I can remember the control worked at the start18:04
holsteinDermhye: i would install xubuntu or main ubuntu.. or lubuntu.. if a desktop operating system is more what you are looking for18:05
holsteinotherwise, im sure its something you can sort out, with patience18:05
holsteinDermhye: imagine how long you used the last operating system you were comfortable on before adding audio devices, or reparing any volume controls18:05
holsteinDermhye: you can try as another user ,such as the guest account.. you can try adding another panel volume manager18:06
holsteinDermhye: you can try taking a screenshot to better convey what the issue is18:06
