=== S-USA is now known as SpeedRacer === SpeedRacer is now known as SonikkuAmerica [03:06] hello folks [03:07] :-) [03:07] o/ [03:07] just wanted to drop by and say hi [03:07] had a successful upgrade to 13.10 today [03:08] I had tried 13.04 back in the summer, but it didn't support my m-audio usb sound module [03:08] i do LTS on my production machines [03:08] after upgrading to 13.10, my sound module is supported and shows right up in audacity, etc. [03:08] How's that signed image for 14.04 coming? [03:09] signed kernel? [03:11] Yeah. I dropped by a few months ago and asked about it. *kernel [03:13] how's the hardware support on LTS? [03:17] SonikkuAmerica: you would need to ask in the main dev channel [03:18] SonikkuAmerica: you can ask upstream kernel team [03:18] Oh OK [03:18] I'll do that [03:22] SonikkuAmerica: nothing about that will facilitate any audio workflow [03:22] Well I must be one of 6 people with UEFI that uses Studio... [03:23] :P [03:23] SonikkuAmerica: you should be able to disable it in the bios [03:23] As in use CSM [03:24] ( We had this convo before, I just know it (: ) [03:24] SonikkuAmerica: i dont have the hardware, so i dont know [03:24] SonikkuAmerica: i just read that it can be disabled on many machines [03:25] neo_: hardware support is the same as the kernel, really [03:26] I mean yeah I can use CSM, but that would require me to change my entire partition table from GPT to "legacy," which means potential risk for the Windows 8(.1) partition that I still can't get rid of because of certain programs that don [03:26] +'t work under Wine. [03:27] * SonikkuAmerica knows full well he could just get Xubuntu and the Studio metas, but if there's an image... [03:27] neo_: the reason to run the lts (or not) is really just that.. long term, or newer [03:27] new packages vs longer term for support [03:28] (3 years, right? Like Xubuntu?) [03:28] the hardware supported could be different, but likely nothing that we would be specifically dealing with in proaudio in linux would change all that much [03:28] the lts's are 5 years now [03:28] !lts [03:28] LTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; with the exception of 12.04 (Precise Pangolin), which will be supported for 5 years on the desktop. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Precise (Precise Pangolin 12.04) [03:29] or, thats the plan.. maybe that gets dropped back to 3 [03:29] holstein: So Studio is doing the 5-year plan? I mean knome stated that Xubuntu is a 3-year LTS cycle, but Xubuntu is Xubuntu, not Studio. [03:30] SonikkuAmerica: AFAIK, the derivitives get to decide [03:30] SonikkuAmerica: the main repos for 12.04 are maintained for 5 years [03:30] holstein: I think Lubuntu 14.04 as well is going for 3 years [03:31] SonikkuAmerica: if you run xubuntu, or ubuntustudio 12.04, or any of the rest of them, the repos are going to still be hot [03:31] for 5 years [03:31] Ow! I burned myself for 5 years! :) [03:31] the kernel is still maintained [03:31] something very xubuntu specific could matter, but, even xfce and all the others are maintained
