SquallHi all. New to Xubuntu and only recently installed it. I'm a complete noob to Linux in general but so far i really like it. Anyways i was wondering if someone could help me with a problem i'm having, I cant seem to get flash to work, i'm using opera too btw. Anyone know what i can do?00:19
bekksSquall: Install Google Chrome, not Chromium. Chrome ships with a current implementation of Adobe Flash.00:19
SquallOk thanks00:19
SquallAny way to get it working with opera?00:20
LAURENTIUenter to web:   labs.adobe.com00:20
Squallon the site then what00:21
bekks11.2 is the latest native Adobe Flash version for Linux. It is heavily outdated.00:22
ObrienDave11.2.xxxx is the last flash version adobe will release00:23
bekksObrienDave: Thats wrong ;) 11.2.xxxx is the last native flash version for linux. Adobe still develops Flash for Linux, but being used by the PepperAPI of Google Chrome only.00:24
ObrienDavehttp://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/adobe-abandons-linux/1041800:24
bekksSo get Chrome, and be happy :)00:24
bekksObrienDave: Please notice the importanzt detail you missed.00:24
ObrienDavei have chrome, i am happy ;P00:25
bekks:P00:25
SquallWhat about if i want to use opera though? Even if it is outdated, i'm not that bothered cause i don't use it that much anyway00:25
LAURENTIUTry the best browser on the world: AURORA http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-aurora.html00:27
SquallIf i have to use chrome then so be it its just that opera is the best browser imo00:28
SquallWhen i say opera is best i'm talking about opera 12 not opera 115 or later00:28
Squall*1500:29
ruenoakHi Squall do you know if you have Flash installed on your system? does it work in Firefox ?00:30
Squalli got rid of firefox but i do have flash installed00:31
Squallopera knows the plugin is there but whenever i go to a page with flas i get a message saying shockwave flash has crashed00:32
ruenoakdid you install Opera from there site, it should have detected that you were using Ubuntu and give you the option to in stall using the deb installer00:32
ruenoakoh I see00:33
Squallbefore i got rid of firefox i had the same problem with it too00:33
Squallyeah i downloaded the deb from their site and then opened it with the ubuntu software centre and installed it00:34
David-ASquall: did you install flash using the one of the packages xubuntu-restricted-extra or flashplugin-installer or similar?00:35
Squalli tried it with the xubuntu restricted extra and the individual one and had the same problem both times00:36
SquallOn a seperate note does anyone know if xubuntu is pronounced x-u-buntu or zoo-buntu?00:37
David-ASquall: it depends. what is your native language? in swedish it is ex-ubuntu. in spanish too I would guess, but not sure.00:40
Squallenglish00:40
ruenoakI've always said X-ubuntu but I have heard allot of people say Zoo as well00:40
Squallok cool00:42
Squall thanks00:42
David-ASquall: does opera have the special url "about:plugins" too see what plugins it have found?00:42
Squalli'll try one sec00:43
GridCubekzubuntu00:43
Squallyeah it does00:44
Squallit says shockwave flash and where its installed and it says icedtea-web plugin and where thats installed too00:45
ruenoakJust installed Opera seems to find the flash Plugin ok  "/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so"00:46
SquallYeah it says /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so on mine too00:47
David-ASquall: shockwave flash is flash, isn't it? (icedtea is java)00:47
Squallyeah its flash00:47
SquallEverything looks ok to me but it just doesn't work when i go on youtube or whatever00:48
SquallIt did exactly the same thing on firefox too00:49
LAURENTIUPlease respond my question: What is minimum resources for xubuntu ( processor, video card memory ) ? ( I now the RAM is 192 MB ). Thanks.00:49
bekksLAURENTIU: http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/00:52
bekksMinimum is 64M for installing using the alternate CD, but for actually running 512M is the minimum.00:52
Squalli'm using a 18ghz AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with a 64MB IGP and it woorks fast for me00:53
bekksAs long as you are confident with the performance, there is no minimum for CPU and GPU VRAM.00:53
Squallthat should have said 1.8ghz00:53
SquallIf i have to use chrome then i will its just damn irritating when i know it should work00:56
SquallWhen i did a google search it seems that quite a few people were having the same problems with firefox and opera on ask ubuntu00:57
Squalli tried the solutions and it didn't seem to make any difference00:58
Squallg2g guys but thanks for trying to help. Until i find a solution i'll just use chrome for youtube and whatnot and opera for everything else. Thanks again01:09
LAURENTIUI try to install Linux Mint 9, but not suported. I am windows xp installed on my sistem.   Support my system OS  XUBUNTU ?  ( Processor Intel Celeron 533 MHz / 128 KB , RAM 256 MB / 133 MHz, HDD 20 GB, video card memory integrated intel 82810 / 32 MB / 1024 X 768 ) .01:16
bekksLAURENTIU: Your system specs support xubuntu, but you have a pretty slow and low-RAM system.01:18
bekksLAURENTIU: you are better off using lubuntu, maybe.01:19
LAURENTIUThanks for information and alternative.01:20
ruenoakI second Lubuntu, I have managed to install Lubuntu on a Pentium 3 Machine the install was slow but it runs quite well01:21
LAURENTIU<ruenoak> What is configuration on a Pentium 3 machine ?01:22
ruenoakit's an old Compaq Machine   I just check01:26
David-ALAURENTIU: I think 256 MB RAM is too little for a comfortable experience in firefox or chromium. I am not sure but I think the cpu and graphics may be to weak to play videos with higher resolution than dvd (480p or so, I think).01:27
ruenoakP3 700MHz 256MB SDRam Trident CyberBlade Video Card  30GB HDD01:29
ruenoakI had to make a custom xorg, conf for the Video card01:29
ruenoakI use to have Xubuntu 10.04 running on it but newer versions of Xubuntu are a bit to heavy now01:31
LAURENTIU<ruenoak> What is for me ? : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/PreviousReleases OR  http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/01:37
ruenoakhmm You might get away with the Graphical installer for Lubuntu  but your Ram is quite low. you can use the Lubuntu Alternate_ISO which is better for low ram systems https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Alternate_ISO01:44
ruenoakthe Alternate ISO is a bit less user friendly but is great for old systems there are some Instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/AlternateInstall01:46
David-ALAURENTIU: Do you want to keep Windows XP? That is, make a "dual boot" install with both Linux and Windows XP?01:47
LAURENTIUNo, I do not want to keep xp.01:49
bekksLAURENTIU: then first get a lubuntu live cd, and see how it's working for you.01:50
LAURENTIUThanks all.01:52
xubuntu343hey guys, i have a question.04:23
xubuntu343i can't login anymore, even though auto-login is enabled.04:23
xubuntu343i can ssh in, but then X isn't running04:24
jaygatsby7setup a new user .  autologin may be your issue04:28
xubuntu343nvm, back to reinstalling xubuntu 12.1004:30
jaygatsby7these shortened support cycles are kind of a pain04:33
jaygatsby713.10 had a few issues for me that I needed to iron out04:34
SonikkuAmericaAnd now they're all ironed out and here comes 14.04?04:35
SonikkuAmericaYou can hold onto 14.04 for 3 years, you know04:35
jaygatsby7I thought it was 5 years04:36
jaygatsby7or does that not incl xfce version04:36
SonikkuAmericaXubuntu doesn't follow Ubuntu's and Kubuntu's LTS cycles. That was a decision that Pasi Lallinaho (knome), director of the Xubuntu project, made.04:37
jaygatsby7software just gets dated.  12.04 is solid but I refuse to use it04:37
SonikkuAmericaAnd then it gets engaged and married. We all go sometime.04:37
jaygatsby7funny04:38
jaygatsby7fortunately it's kind of a hobby for me to fix my computer04:39
SonikkuAmericaBut everyone meets a Daisy Fay Buchanan in life... right?04:39
jaygatsby7daisy was bad news04:39
SonikkuAmericaTo be sure.04:39
SonikkuAmericaBut for me it's not that much of a pain; I don't hold on to an interim release, like some dol04:40
SonikkuAmerica*do.04:40
jaygatsby7I couldn't get my machine to resume from suspend in 13.10.04:41
jaygatsby7that's a deal breaker for me.  would have loved to just stick with 13.0404:41
jaygatsby7got it fixed though04:41
SonikkuAmericaBut I must ask, why Xubuntu?04:41
jaygatsby7xfce is just what I like for now04:42
jaygatsby7it keeps getting better and I like it04:43
SonikkuAmericaXFCE is a solid choice. I like GNOME better, but it's not a solid flavor of Ubuntu yet. I'm going over to Ubuntu Studio (provided it plays nice with UEFI)04:43
jaygatsby7I'm using crunchbang on this machine04:43
jaygatsby7also nice04:44
jaygatsby7you should try fedora should work with uefi04:45
jaygatsby7pure gnome04:46
SonikkuAmericaI have already. Nice, but not Ubuntu. <3 Ubuntu.04:47
jaygatsby7i agree with you04:49

well_laid_lawn!sound07:28
ubottuIf you're having problems with sound, click the Volume applet, then Sound Preferences, and check your Volume, Hardware, Input, and Output settings.  If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files,  see !players and !mp3.07:28
xeddy123Nothing happens when I click on volume..07:29
xeddy123a small grey bar appears on top but it looks like an empty menu07:29

danehello, is anyone here? I need help in setting up samba so it can  read windows 7 WORKgroup shares.09:30
elfydane: not needed to do so for a long time - but when I did I used the wiki information - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Samba09:32
daneI'll check it out.09:33
danei'll report back if it works.09:33
elfydane: ok - better to have a specific issue at that point than a really general one - which should be the case once you've started :)09:34
elfydane: though you might be ok to just try and connect with gigolo - from the system menu09:35
daneelfy, okay, will try gigolo...09:36
elfyhttp://www.uvena.de/gigolo/help.html09:37
daneelfy, well it works, but only for users/public files on the 7 machines.09:37
elfyI'm unfortunately not going to be any help with it other than generally pointing in the right direction - sorry09:38
daneelfy, it's okay. for now, i'm trying out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Samba/SambaClientGuide09:39
danealso, i disconnected the share in gigolo *facepalm*09:39
danewait, it's still connected... ???09:41
daneelfy,  by the way, any chance you know how to solve the "Server's Role (logon server) conflicts with share-level security" error?09:43
danebeen googling about it but can't find any straight answers.09:44
elfynope sorry09:44
daneah, ok.09:44
elfybut hang about - people come and go in here09:44
elfyask again a bit later09:44
daneyeah, will do.09:44
xubuntu720hi guys, i have one question. The folders 'downloads', 'music', etc are not translated into my language. But when i rename them, the folder representing it with a watermark, like music, pictures etc. dissappears, and a blank folder appears. How can i rename the folder, keeping the folder icon like default?11:08
xubuntu654hi. After installing 13.10 only an admin user can get automount to work when a camera is connected, a desktop user cannot get it to automount. Is there some policy/rule/config file to edit to fix this? I have googled and tested but I cannot get it to work12:29
xubuntu654as for DVDs it doesn't work for admin user either12:30
tioxWell, from my experience with fedora, might have something to do with a polkit config file I am not sure about automounting DVDs either. Mounting as in, for data transfer right?12:30
tioxAlso, sorry for the run-on there, sometimes my fingers tap the keys a bit too lightly. :P12:31
xubuntu654yes, setting up the computer for my parents so when they connect their cameras a script is run to copy the photos +++ automatically. It worked before, but not now after i reinstalled 13.1012:32
tioxHere's a tidbit from a forum thread about policykit;12:32
tiox"This is just the same as in regular ubuntu, not xubuntu-specific. Maybe there is a slight difference between xfce and xubuntu sessions during login when you upgraded from previous versions of xubuntu where still hal was used over udev."12:32
xubuntu654only I get it to respond (they are only a dekstop user as they managed to start 13.10 upgrade en then kilel the power, so admin rights are revoked ;-) )12:33
xubuntu654as I understand udisks2 is now used?12:33
tioxudisks2 / udisksctl, yes.12:34
tioxI know nothing about this, sadly.12:34
xubuntu654but it would be the same on ubuntu?12:34
xubuntu654i mean not a thunar vol issue12:34
tioxThis appears to be an XFCE bug of some sort, as I found a bugzilla post about no automount. Real fast, could you open thunar and give me the version?12:36
xubuntu6541.6.312:38
xubuntu654one question12:38
tioxAh, this but is for 0.8.0, but might still be relevant, I would think they fixed this by now. From what I am reading, Thunar itself uses udev to mount devices, but thunar-volman prefers to use12:38
tioxWhoops, lol12:38
xubuntu654I went into the user rights on the user account and of the admin account12:38
tioxhttps://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=919312:38
ubottubugzilla.xfce.org bug 9193 in General "Automount doesn't work." [Normal,New]12:39
tioxYeah, what's going on there?12:39
xubuntu654the admin account has far less rights hooked than user, is that normal?12:39
xubuntu654I mean use mode, sound unit, etc... are hooked for user, not admin12:39
xubuntu654like FUSE is for user, not admin12:40
xubuntu654use mode=usemodem12:40
tioxInteresting. Another thing I know nothing about, but admin should have nearly as much rights as root.12:40
tioxJust for the sake of trying, see if you cannot add a password for root and log in as other/root.12:41
tioxThen, make a ne wacount in root as admin and log into that.12:41
tioxnew account*12:41
tioxI don't know what it will do, but it's worth a shot and you can lock it back down later.12:41
tioxIf xubuntu is anything like ubuntu, this information should be relevantl https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo12:42
tiox;12:42
cfhowletttiox, xubuntu IS ubuntu with XFCE4 flavoring12:42
tioxRight. I am under the assumption if he made a new admin account as root, he might be able to fix some of the issues he is having by barrowing the account settings or transferring certain necessary files into the new user, then deleting the old account if the new account has certain rights the current user account has.12:44
tioxOr figure out how to make the user an admin and not a regular user, etc.12:44
tioxI may be so very wrong, since I am still a greenhorn on certain sbjects.12:44
tioxsubjects*12:44
xubuntu654yes, I guess making them admin would solve some issues, but I don't want them to be that :-)12:45
xubuntu654need to log in as the user to test something, brb12:45
tioxxubuntu: Do your parents ever use the terminal and type in stuff like sudo apt-get?12:45
tioxBlah.12:45
tioxxubuntu436: Try installing finch or irssi so you can drop to shell and chat there, instead of having to log out every time.12:51
tioxAnyway, any luck?12:53
xubuntu436strange thing seems something happend12:55
xubuntu436wait a bit to test again12:55
xubuntu436now it works ??? not sure why. I'll reboot to test again.12:56
MaximBwhat is a good hard disk check health tool for xfce/ubuntu?14:37
TheSheepfsck?14:40
TheSheep!fsck14:41
ubottufsck is the FileSystem ChecKer, which runs automatically when you boot if you didn't shutdown cleanly. Type "man fsck" for information on running it manually. The command "sudo touch /forcefsck && sudo shutdown -r now" will force a reboot and a filesystem check; "sudo touch /fastboot" will skip a filesystem check at next reboot14:41
koegsfsck is for filesystem, smartmontools for the hdd itself https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools14:41
TheSheepkoegs: actually fsck has an option to check the whole disk and update bad blocks14:41

ObrienDave!ask | Squall23:13
ubottuSquall: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience23:13
SquallI just downloaded the deb for google chrome and installed it but when i try to open it nothing is happening. The processes are there in the task manager but nothing is appearing.23:14
Squall@ubotto ok no worries23:15
ObrienDavelol ubouut is an info bot :)23:16
ObrienDave*ubottu23:16
ObrienDaveanyway, where did you get the .deb from? how did you install?23:16
Slesa(and why)23:19
Squalllol not used to xchat. i got the deb from the google website and i've tried installing it both with the ubuntu software manager (it installed but wouldn't load) then removed it and purged it and then tried again with GDebi Package Installer (again it installed but won't load). I've tried rebooting too but to no avail.23:20
ObrienDavetry Software center. if not there, go here: http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/google_chrome23:21
Squall@slesa i mainly use opera as my default browser. I'm only installing chrome for youtube and stuff cause i can't get flash to work with opera23:21
SquallThe only one i can find in software centre is chromium browser not google chrome23:22
ObrienDaveok, you need to enable the ppa from the link. follow the instructions23:23
SquallDo i need to remove google chrome again before i do that?23:24
SlesaSquall: Yeah, ok. I use chromium instead, you know.23:24
ObrienDaveumm, maybe, maybe not. enable the ppa and we'll go from there23:25
Squall@ObrienDave Ok cool. @Slesa Does that have the preinstalled flash too?23:26
SlesaSquall: I have no idea, I do not use Flash and do not visit pages with flash on it23:27
Squall@Slesa Not even youtube?23:27
SlesaSquall: Youtube works fine for me23:27
Squall@Slesa That might do the job instead for me then cause youtube uses flash for the videos23:28
ObrienDaveSquall, that would be a clue that chromium has flash support23:28
ObrienDaveoops, sorry, you saw that. my bad ;P23:29
Squall@ObrienDave I've setup the key and the repository.23:29
ObrienDaveok, sudo apt-get update23:30
