WintersGreetings. Which channel do I use for support?00:49
valorieWinters: for kubuntu support, you are in the right chan00:56
WintersWhat channel is for Ubuntu?00:57
valoriethere are lots, but the basic support chan is #ubuntu00:57
valorie!alis00:57
ubottualis is a services bot that can help you find channels. Read "/msg alis help list" for help and ask any questions about it in #freenode. Example usage: /msg alis list #ubuntu* or /msg alis list *http*00:57
valorieyou might find that useful, Winters00:57
valorieI use it a lot00:57
WintersJust one last question. Is this chat for Ubuntu?00:58
valoriewe're all part of the ubuntu community00:59
WintersOk confused, but will let it be.00:59
valorieand kubuntu is KDE desktop on ubuntu, so yes00:59
valorieubuntu base provides lots of different desktops00:59
valorieyou can use any or all, as you prefer00:59
valoriesome desktops come with associated applications; again, you can use any or all01:00
valoriewhether they 'match' or not01:00
WintersHow do I know what I have?01:00
valoriewhat sort of install medium did you use?01:00
WintersI used a USB.01:01
WintersAnd just downloaded there link that said LTS.01:01
valoriecalled Ubuntu, or Kubuntu?01:01
WintersI say Ubuntu.01:02
Winterssaw*01:02
valoriein your IRC app, does it have a Help menu item?01:03
valorieif it comes associated with a particular desktop, it will say so in there01:03
valoriefor instance, I use Konversation, which is a KDE application -- in the help menu, there is About Konversation, and About KDE01:04
WintersI see Ubuntu Desktop Guide.01:06
Winters12.04 LTS01:06
valoriecool, ok, you have Ubuntu01:07
valoriewe might be able to answer some of your questions, but #ubuntu is likely to be more helpful01:07
WintersWhat is Xubuntu?01:07
valoriethat is the desktop xfce on ubuntu base01:07
WintersOH ok.01:08
valorieexcellent for older machines01:08
WintersOn Linux Mint they have only one help room.01:08
valorievery light and fast01:08
WintersI love the gui stuff.01:08
valoriemint is a spinoff of ubuntu, as I recall01:08
valoriethere are lots of those01:08
WintersYes, it is. Support is not so great. haha01:08
valoriesome love it01:08
valorieeveryone should use what they like; this isn't religion01:09
WintersLOL01:09
WintersCan you link me to the different downloads of Ubuntu?01:09
valorienice chatting with ya, but it is dinner time here, and I'm going afk01:09
valoriesuch as what, Winters?01:09
WintersOk, thanks for your help.01:09
valoriethe latest?01:09
WintersThe LTS ones/01:10
valorie!lts01:11
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; with the exception of 12.04 (Precise Pangolin), which will be supported for 5 years on the desktop. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Precise (Precise Pangolin 12.04)01:11
valorienot helpful01:11
WintersWhat?01:12
valorie!precise01:12
ubottuUbuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) is the current !LTS release of Ubuntu.  Download http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ - Release Info: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/120401:12
valoriethere we go01:12
WintersThank you kindly.01:12
valoriethe link above should have all the LTS releases01:12
WintersIt does. Thank you once again.01:13
Wintershttp://www.kubuntu.org is for this chat room?01:14

Whiskey`Wonkaok so i went and did a clean install on my new laptop (moved the hdd from an old one). the network manager does not look to have any wireless support?? the edit connections does have the wireless connection i setup during install but has no scanning abaility. what happened??04:08
jbwivhi guys. I switched to kde after upgrading ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 and then installing kubuntu-desktop via apt. However, I can't seem to find how I should manage wireless interfaces (or any ifcs, for that matter). There's no icon in the systray that I can seem to find. Should there be or is there another way?04:09
valorieWhiskey`Wonka: wireless worked out of the box for me04:10
valorie!wireless04:10
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs04:10
jalcinejbwiv: you want the new Plasma Network Management tool04:10
valoriemaybe some of that stuff will help?04:10
jalcineit should be part of the systray though04:10
Whiskey`Wonkavalorie: yea it worked in the installer but not after first boot04:11

=== dziegler is now known as dziegler_off
jbwivjalcine: do you know what command will start it from the cmdline?04:19
jalcinesudo service network-manager restart should start it over if it isn't running already04:20
jalcinedoes ifconfig and iwconfig show you anything?04:20
jbwivjalcine: think i just found it by enabling "Network Management" in the panel options04:20

Whiskey`Wonkafixing the kernel did the trick. now, why the buggers was it messed up like that?!?!06:02
valorieyou might not have noticed if the updates were installed as it went along, instead of after06:03
valoriehowever, whatever bug was active in the beginning, I thought was fixed06:03
valorieWhiskey`Wonka: will you please write to kub-devel and report your experience?06:04

soeegood morning07:21
lordievaderGood morning.09:15
qdatasigh: I had hoped a clean and fresh install of 13.10 from scratch would make this go away:  http://pastebin.com/Tip3iQSA10:34
qdataguess not10:34
lordievaderqdata: Seems to me your nVidia driver is misbehaving.10:35
qdatastarted in 13.0410:36
qdatacomplete lockup - have to press reset button to restart machine10:37
lordievaderqdata: From your log: "This may be caused my a misbehaving driver monopolizing the server's resources." Not very strange that you have a complete lockup if <- is true.10:39
qdatadon't remember who I got email contact with at Nvidia, but I emailed this to them almost a year ago10:39
lordievaderWhat driver do you use and what card do you have?10:39
qdatait's a GTS-450 and the driver is the one from the kubuntu repos10:40
qdata319.6010:40
qdataI've been seeing this for almost a year now, very random sporadic to the tune of happening about once a month10:42
qdataI would normally tend to blame hardware for something this intermittent, but the backtrace is always the same10:43
lordievaderqdata: On the nVidia website I see a 319.76 release, perhaps that fixes the problem.10:44
qdataright now I'm just bummed; as an end-user I need to be spending my computer time doing money-making things - every hour I spend trying to fix something broken is an hour I'm not making money10:48
