=== dziegler_off is now known as dziegler === dziegler is now known as dziegler_off [00:49] Greetings. Which channel do I use for support? [00:56] Winters: for kubuntu support, you are in the right chan [00:57] What channel is for Ubuntu? [00:57] there are lots, but the basic support chan is #ubuntu [00:57] !alis [00:57] alis is a services bot that can help you find channels. Read "/msg alis help list" for help and ask any questions about it in #freenode. Example usage: /msg alis list #ubuntu* or /msg alis list *http* [00:57] you might find that useful, Winters [00:57] I use it a lot [00:58] Just one last question. Is this chat for Ubuntu? [00:59] we're all part of the ubuntu community [00:59] Ok confused, but will let it be. [00:59] and kubuntu is KDE desktop on ubuntu, so yes [00:59] ubuntu base provides lots of different desktops [00:59] you can use any or all, as you prefer [01:00] some desktops come with associated applications; again, you can use any or all [01:00] whether they 'match' or not [01:00] How do I know what I have? [01:00] what sort of install medium did you use? [01:01] I used a USB. [01:01] And just downloaded there link that said LTS. [01:01] called Ubuntu, or Kubuntu? [01:02] I say Ubuntu. [01:02] saw* [01:03] in your IRC app, does it have a Help menu item? [01:03] if it comes associated with a particular desktop, it will say so in there [01:04] for instance, I use Konversation, which is a KDE application -- in the help menu, there is About Konversation, and About KDE [01:06] I see Ubuntu Desktop Guide. [01:06] 12.04 LTS [01:07] cool, ok, you have Ubuntu [01:07] we might be able to answer some of your questions, but #ubuntu is likely to be more helpful [01:07] What is Xubuntu? [01:07] that is the desktop xfce on ubuntu base [01:08] OH ok. [01:08] excellent for older machines [01:08] On Linux Mint they have only one help room. [01:08] very light and fast [01:08] I love the gui stuff. [01:08] mint is a spinoff of ubuntu, as I recall [01:08] there are lots of those [01:08] Yes, it is. Support is not so great. haha [01:08] some love it [01:09] everyone should use what they like; this isn't religion [01:09] LOL [01:09] Can you link me to the different downloads of Ubuntu? [01:09] nice chatting with ya, but it is dinner time here, and I'm going afk [01:09] such as what, Winters? [01:09] Ok, thanks for your help. [01:09] the latest? [01:10] The LTS ones/ [01:11] !lts [01:11] LTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; with the exception of 12.04 (Precise Pangolin), which will be supported for 5 years on the desktop. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Precise (Precise Pangolin 12.04) [01:11] not helpful [01:12] What? [01:12] !precise [01:12] Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) is the current !LTS release of Ubuntu. Download http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ - Release Info: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/1204 [01:12] there we go [01:12] Thank you kindly. [01:12] the link above should have all the LTS releases [01:13] It does. Thank you once again. [01:14] http://www.kubuntu.org is for this chat room? [02:03] How can I install an ISO to a USB? === dziegler_off is now known as dziegler [02:08] Greetings dziegler, is kubuntu.org for this chat? [02:13] kubuntu.org is our website, yes [02:13] and yes you can burn an ISO to a usb [02:13] that's how I always do it nowdays [02:14] kubuntu has 'startup disk creator' [02:14] not sure what ubuntu calls it [02:15] we have alt+f2; I think there is a search thing on the unity desktop as well [02:15] now [02:16] oh, winters left [02:16] damn === dziegler is now known as dziegler_off [02:25] valorie: it's called the same thing [02:25] ah [02:25] he's gone :/ [02:26] yeah [02:26] boo === Steakanbake|slee is now known as Steakanbake === Steakanbake is now known as Steakanbake|slee === dziegler_off is now known as dziegler [04:08] ok so i went and did a clean install on my new laptop (moved the hdd from an old one). the network manager does not look to have any wireless support?? the edit connections does have the wireless connection i setup during install but has no scanning abaility. what happened?? [04:09] hi guys. I switched to kde after upgrading ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 and then installing kubuntu-desktop via apt. However, I can't seem to find how I should manage wireless interfaces (or any ifcs, for that matter). There's no icon in the systray that I can seem to find. Should there be or is there another way? [04:10] Whiskey`Wonka: wireless worked out of the box for me [04:10] !wireless [04:10] Wireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs [04:10] jbwiv: you want the new Plasma Network Management tool [04:10] maybe some of that stuff will help? [04:10] it should be part of the systray though [04:11] valorie: yea it worked in the installer but not after first boot [04:11] bizarre [04:11] very [04:12] anyway, the wifidocs have good cli stuff to figure out what's going on [04:12] years ago I used to have trouble [04:12] heh. im highly familure with the cli [04:13] its a pita to manage nearly 400 wireless connections by hand [04:13] ^^ === dziegler is now known as dziegler_off [04:19] jalcine: do you know what command will start it from the cmdline? [04:20] sudo service network-manager restart should start it over if it isn't running already [04:20] does ifconfig and iwconfig show you anything? [04:20] jalcine: think i just found it by enabling "Network Management" in the panel options [04:20] :D [04:20] jalcine: yeah, both work fine. cool, thanks [04:21] odd that it's not enabled by default, though [04:22] oh joy! wireless card wasnt even detected on this book [04:22] boot [04:24] Whiskey`Wonka: broadcam? [04:24] NIEN! [04:24] intel [04:25] i might swap in a atheros but intel has been good enough lately [04:25] in fact it was working with my old install 12.10 before i cleared it and went with 13.10 [04:26] this hdd was pulled from 2 or 3 laptops ago [04:30] uhg an the screen randonly still goes full black mmm [04:30] that's weird [04:30] intel should work ootb [04:31] yea i ahve to turn the brightness back up by hand [04:31] yes, yes it should. [04:31] no module loaded this time [04:31] Whiskey`Wonka: at what point? like after KDM/KSplash [04:34] jalcine: at any time after login. i suspect it is the screen timeout [04:36] just sometimes it doesnt come back on its own [04:36] hmmm [04:36] this lenovo has been .... meh [04:37] I thought lenovos were cool with linux :$ [04:37] mmm i wonder if the firmware wasnt installed during install [04:37] yea normaly they are [04:37] i think this is a case of a install booboo [04:38] at least the wireless cardd anyhow [04:38] oh! and it didnt load any bluetooth manager mmm [04:40] acpi errors lovely [04:40] bah, breaking out the hardline [05:06] oh yay no audio also [05:06] wth is wrong with the 13.10 installer [05:06] i can boot to the installer off my usb stick adn it works fine [05:06] installed os, nope [05:11] you verified it, etc? [05:11] and is this a fresh download, or an old spin? [05:13] fresh this afternoon [05:13] and booted from usb [05:14] when i modprobe im getting kmod search moddep could not open moddep file [05:17] oh modprobe, how I hated to have to use that [05:17] !modprobe [05:17] ok..... [05:17] ubottu doesn't like to think of it either [05:17] valorie: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) [05:17] amen, sister [05:18] it looks like /lib is some how not accessable [05:18] ran depmod and /lib/.... does not exist or not accessable [05:19] oh! [05:19] WTF [05:19] o? [05:19] !google modprobe [05:19] I have no google command, use http://www.google.com/ [05:19] lol, sheesh [05:19] that's whached, Whiskey`Wonka [05:20] ya ive got 3.11.0-14-genaric and there is only -12 in /lib/modules [05:21] whacked [05:27] very [05:27] so a few packages were upgradable, one being the -12 kernel O_o [05:27] now its installing -14 [06:02] yay [06:02] fixing the kernel did the trick. now, why the buggers was it messed up like that?!?! [06:03] you might not have noticed if the updates were installed as it went along, instead of after [06:03] however, whatever bug was active in the beginning, I thought was fixed [06:04] Whiskey`Wonka: will you please write to kub-devel and report your experience? [06:04] you don't have to subscribe, if you aren't [06:04] I think we should fix this === dziegler_off is now known as dziegler [06:17] valorie: i guess but i have no idea what lead to it or anything, it might be a one off === dziegler is now known as dziegler_off [06:22] Whiskey`Wonka: but if you write and the devels want to ask you technical questions, they will be able to ask [06:22] most of them don't monitor this chan [06:23] alright so exactly where is the repoting at [06:27] kubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com I think === Balsaq is now known as Guest15810 [07:21] good morning [09:15] Good morning. [10:34] sigh: I had hoped a clean and fresh install of 13.10 from scratch would make this go away: http://pastebin.com/Tip3iQSA [10:34] guess not [10:35] qdata: Seems to me your nVidia driver is misbehaving. [10:36] started in 13.04 [10:37] complete lockup - have to press reset button to restart machine [10:39] qdata: From your log: "This may be caused my a misbehaving driver monopolizing the server's resources." Not very strange that you have a complete lockup if <- is true. [10:39] don't remember who I got email contact with at Nvidia, but I emailed this to them almost a year ago [10:39] What driver do you use and what card do you have? [10:40] it's a GTS-450 and the driver is the one from the kubuntu repos [10:40] 319.60 [10:42] I've been seeing this for almost a year now, very random sporadic to the tune of happening about once a month [10:43] I would normally tend to blame hardware for something this intermittent, but the backtrace is always the same [10:44] qdata: On the nVidia website I see a 319.76 release, perhaps that fixes the problem. [10:48] right now I'm just bummed; as an end-user I need to be spending my computer time doing money-making things - every hour I spend trying to fix something broken is an hour I'm not making money [11:49] Hiyas all === palasso_ is now known as palasso === jayhunold is now known as jhunold [13:09] Hi, i use kubuntu for a while now (nice) but now i try to write a letter in libreoffice and the quotes are not working '" <- those two [13:11] daft, define not working [13:11] define? [13:29] yup the problem is limited to LibreOffice [13:31] daft: I don't use LibreOffice so I'm afraid I cannot help you there. But I think the folks over at #libreoffice might be able to help you.
