amichairI just got a notification that a new version of Kubuntu is available (I'm on Saucy, with release notifications set to Normal Releases). Strange...08:14
valorieamichair: do you have backports enabled?08:20
valorieperhaps it is a notification of 4.12?08:20
lordievaderGoor morning.08:22
ghilmorning!08:23
lordievaderUgh made the mistake here too...08:23
* lordievader isn't awake yet.08:23
lordievaderHey ghil, how are you?08:23
ghilgreat, if tired. It's 3 in the morning where I am :p08:23
amichairvalorie: I have backports enabled. and already have 4.12.0. And it was a notification that looks like a new kubuntu release notification... (I clicked on it out of curiosity, but it just disappeared and nothing happened.)08:24
valoriestrange08:25
amichairindeed08:25
valoriesounds like apt got confused, which baffled muon08:25
amichairI was running apt-get update & upgrade from cli, with the only update being dropbox package08:25
ghilif it was today's update, there's not just dropbox, but a new linux-generic, image and headers.08:33
amichairAlso, ever since I upgraded KDE to 4.12.0, the panel freezes several times a day (rest of desktop, alt-tab etc. are ok), then after a few minutes it unfreezes and goes back to normal. Is this a known issue?08:48
valoriehmmm08:49
valorieI've heard people reporting this, but not so much kubuntu people08:49
valorieI wonder if it's a kernel or driver problem?08:50
valorieI experience nothing like this08:50
amichairvalorie: I was wondering too. I can't use desktop effects for about a year now, which I tend to blame on the nvidia driver (just a guess). But this being only the panel and not other stuff,  I tend to point the finger at kde more than the drivers. I may be wrong.08:51
amichairplus, as far as I know it started happening right with the 4.12.0 update08:52
valorieyou might look at bugs.kde.org and see if anyone has something similar08:53
valoriechime in on it08:53
amichairin the past year my experience with kubuntu/kde/nvidia went from an awesome working desktop to no effects, flaky multi-monitor support, and now frozen panel. I'm actually considering trying a different distro for the first time since I started using kubunut at 6.06 :-(08:54
amichair(and a bunch of other little annoyances too)08:55
valorie:(08:55
valoriethere are lots of ISOs out there08:55
valoriethis isn't religion -- you should have something that works for ya08:56
amichairtrue08:56
amichairbut it would be a hard break-up :-)08:56
valorieyou can always double-boot08:56
amichairmaybe I'll give a shot at manually installing the latest nvidia drivers first. should I expect any issues with that?08:58
valoriehere's what i know:09:00
valorie!nvidia09:00
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto09:00
valorie:-)09:00
valorieI've not had to do special drivers for many years09:00
amichairvalorie: me neither09:16
amichairI thought those days were behind me09:16
amichairdarn, 331 isn't available in saucy repos09:17
amichairI'll try it straight from nvidia website09:17
amichairwish me luck :-)09:19
valorieluck, amichair!09:20
ghilrah, I saw his message way too late, it would've been better to add the X updates PPA.09:26
=== vmuser is now known as vmusr
amichairwell I got back to the desktop, so that's a good start09:35
lordievaderamichair: Yayy, but is the driver loaded?09:35
amichairI've turned on effects, so I think so. How do I check?09:36
amichairnow with effects and second monitor turned on only a few window contents go black isntead of both screens going black... so that's an improvement too!09:36
lordievaderamichair: lscpi -k |grep -A 2 VGA09:36
amichairKernel driver in use: nvidia09:37
amichairis that the line I'm looking for?09:37
lordievaderamichair: Exactly, and that should be the closed source driver. Else it would read nouveau I suppose.09:38
amichairok, so now I just have to keep working until a panel freeze occurs (or not)09:38
ghilalso it's lspci, not lscpi.09:38
amichairghil: yeah, got that :-)09:38
ghil:)09:39
ghilthat makes me think I haven't updated my server's driver yet.09:39
* lordievader still isn't awake...09:39
amichairthose black windows... I've seen them before too. minimize+restore brings the window content back.09:39
amichairYou think that's also the driver's fault?09:40
ghilnot likely. I'm thinking the compositor.09:40
ghilor a brilliant mix of the two.09:40
amichairwho's the compositor in this case?09:40
amichairkwin?09:41
ghilyep.09:41
amichairhmmm I thought they switched to lightdm... or maybe I'm mixing things up. They're both window managers?09:41
ghillightdm is the display manager.09:42
amichairI don't see it in the process list09:42
amichairdarn, I just turned off the second monitor, and the first one went black (other than cursor). So that issue is still there. And I still can't leave desktop effects on :-(09:43
ghildid you recently update Xorg?09:44
ghildid you try changing the effects from openGL to Xrender?09:45
amichairwhat's the xorg package name to check?09:45
ghil(Desktop Effects, Advanced, Compositing Type: Xrender)09:46
amichairI've had this problem for months now, so not sure if it followed an xorg update at the time09:46
ghiltry Xrender first, then we'll see if we have to update xorg, but I don't think it's the problem.09:46
amichairghil: and qt graphics system native or raster (it was raster, but when changing to xrender it reverted to native)09:47
amichair?09:47
ghilyeah that's normal.09:47
ghilgo for native.09:47
ghilRaster is somewhat slower anyway.09:47
amichair"failed to activate desktop effects..."09:47
amichairghil: what next?09:49
ghilhmm..I've been checking forums (I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point) and you're definitely not alone. What is your graphic card?09:49
amichairnvidia 930009:50
amichairhmmm... I just tried opengl 2.0 again, but changed raster -> native09:50
ghildid it work?09:51
amichairturning on/off second monitor appears ok!09:51
ghilOoooh.09:51
ghil:D09:51
amichairI'll leave it like this for now for a few days of natural use, see how it goes...09:52
amichairghil: thanks!09:52
amichairand still wait for some panel freezes too09:52
amichairwho knows, maybe they only occur with effects off :-)09:52
ghil:)09:53
amichairbtw newer nvidia drivers don't get backported in repos right?09:53
amichairI'll have to stick with manual updates until the next release?09:53
ghilyeah no they don't. you can go a little bleeding edge and add the xedgers PPA though.09:54
ghilI wouldn't recommend it on a production machine, but if you're feeling lucky and know how to revert packages, it's always up to date.09:54
ghilhttps://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates09:55
amichairghil: I read about it, but got the impression it'll update all sorts of other stuff, and I'd rather keep it down to a minimum.09:55
amichairand the nvidia drivers installed dkms, so as I understand it there will be no problem with kernel updates etc.09:55
ghiloh it will. It updates Xorg/nvidia to it's latest incarnation always. It's not debian stable, if you know what I mean.09:56
amichair(I used to need to re-install the drivers each time the kernel was updated in older versions, if memory serves)09:56
ghilessentially yeah, but you can't be sure.09:56
ghilyeah an headers and image refresh was necessary each time.09:56
ghilbut normally nowadays, everything's fine.09:57
amichairvalorie, ghil: well thanks again, I'll run it like this and see to what new and exciting issues it takes me ;-)09:58
ghilgood luck, if there's anything we're there :P09:58
amichairghil: much appreciated :-)09:58

vmusrghil, sure but you'll automate it11:08
vmusrneed to*11:08
vmusrlike on login or via cron11:09
ghiloh, via cron would be nice. o.O thanks for the tip vmusr11:09
vmusrghil, np just keep in mind that you'll have to make sure that the environment is perfectly the same11:11

ptomblinHey all, I just tried to set up a second video card and a third monitor, and now everything is screwed up.17:18
ptomblinCan anybody help me?17:18
ptomblinI had the two monitors set up using "Twin View" and it worked great, but with the htird monitor it made me make it a separate x screen, so now I can move my cursor from one screen to another but I can't drag a window from one to the other.17:19
jalcineptomblin: can you manually switch screens using Kwin?17:43
jalcinelike when you open the window's menu and select Screen17:43
ptomblinNo, it shows all three screens, but it won't move the window to them.17:43
ptomblinWhat I can do is add a panel to the other screens and start apps on them, but evidently if I have that app already running on the main screen, it goes there instead.17:47
ptomblinAnd the system settings -> display and monitor will only show the monitor that it's currently running on.17:48

ptomblinOk, now I have two options:19:03
ptomblin- I went into nvidia-settings an enabled xinerama, and things are working right (although they're a bit flickery)19:04
ptomblin- I booted from a live CD, and everything worked right, and wasn't flickery.19:04
ptomblinSo supposing I wanted to get rid of all the fancy nvidia stuff and make it configure itself the way it does when I booted the live CD, what do I need to do? Delete xorg.conf? Blow away my .kde directory?19:07

garrett_I hope someone can help me, I'm running Kubuntu 13.10, on an Acer laptop. I decided  to install Wicd, I downloaded both Wicd, and a backup copy of Network Manager, and also a copy of Connman. NM, and Wicd are both debian.tar.gz, Connman is a .deb. I uninstalled NM, then Wicd would not intstall, neither would CM. Tried to reinstall NM no luck either.20:27
garrett_When trying NM, or Wicd, in terminal I always get, "file not found", "file does not exist", or "not a directory".20:28
BluesKajgarrett_, where you trying wicd from, it should be in your /home/user/Downloads file and may need to be extracted there20:31
garrett_Actually I moved it to the home folder, so I wouldn't have to "cd" anywhere. I've read probably a hundred how-to's, and followed them completly, with no luck.20:32
garrett_I extracted, read the "Read Me Install" file, followed it, but the terminal will not find it. Or gives some kind of error.20:33
