[04:20] helloo [04:22] i am unable to boot to windows 8 when my Kubuntu hard drive is attached [04:22] please help urgent [04:23] it is showing a BSOD with "inacessable_boot_device" [04:57] please anyone help [04:57] pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee === one is now known as Guest69128 [08:14] I just got a notification that a new version of Kubuntu is available (I'm on Saucy, with release notifications set to Normal Releases). Strange... [08:20] amichair: do you have backports enabled? [08:20] perhaps it is a notification of 4.12? [08:22] Goor morning. [08:23] morning! [08:23] Ugh made the mistake here too... [08:23] * lordievader isn't awake yet. [08:23] Hey ghil, how are you? [08:23] great, if tired. It's 3 in the morning where I am :p [08:24] valorie: I have backports enabled. and already have 4.12.0. And it was a notification that looks like a new kubuntu release notification... (I clicked on it out of curiosity, but it just disappeared and nothing happened.) [08:25] strange [08:25] indeed [08:25] sounds like apt got confused, which baffled muon [08:25] I was running apt-get update & upgrade from cli, with the only update being dropbox package [08:33] if it was today's update, there's not just dropbox, but a new linux-generic, image and headers. [08:48] Also, ever since I upgraded KDE to 4.12.0, the panel freezes several times a day (rest of desktop, alt-tab etc. are ok), then after a few minutes it unfreezes and goes back to normal. Is this a known issue? [08:49] hmmm [08:49] I've heard people reporting this, but not so much kubuntu people [08:50] I wonder if it's a kernel or driver problem? [08:50] I experience nothing like this [08:51] valorie: I was wondering too. I can't use desktop effects for about a year now, which I tend to blame on the nvidia driver (just a guess). But this being only the panel and not other stuff, I tend to point the finger at kde more than the drivers. I may be wrong. [08:52] plus, as far as I know it started happening right with the 4.12.0 update [08:53] you might look at bugs.kde.org and see if anyone has something similar [08:53] chime in on it [08:54] in the past year my experience with kubuntu/kde/nvidia went from an awesome working desktop to no effects, flaky multi-monitor support, and now frozen panel. I'm actually considering trying a different distro for the first time since I started using kubunut at 6.06 :-( [08:55] (and a bunch of other little annoyances too) [08:55] :( [08:55] there are lots of ISOs out there [08:56] this isn't religion -- you should have something that works for ya [08:56] true [08:56] but it would be a hard break-up :-) [08:56] you can always double-boot [08:58] maybe I'll give a shot at manually installing the latest nvidia drivers first. should I expect any issues with that? [09:00] here's what i know: [09:00] !nvidia [09:00] For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto [09:00] :-) [09:00] I've not had to do special drivers for many years [09:16] valorie: me neither [09:16] I thought those days were behind me [09:17] darn, 331 isn't available in saucy repos [09:17] I'll try it straight from nvidia website [09:19] wish me luck :-) [09:20] luck, amichair! [09:26] rah, I saw his message way too late, it would've been better to add the X updates PPA. === vmuser is now known as vmusr [09:35] well I got back to the desktop, so that's a good start [09:35] amichair: Yayy, but is the driver loaded? [09:36] I've turned on effects, so I think so. How do I check? [09:36] now with effects and second monitor turned on only a few window contents go black isntead of both screens going black... so that's an improvement too! [09:36] amichair: lscpi -k |grep -A 2 VGA [09:37] Kernel driver in use: nvidia [09:37] is that the line I'm looking for? [09:38] amichair: Exactly, and that should be the closed source driver. Else it would read nouveau I suppose. [09:38] ok, so now I just have to keep working until a panel freeze occurs (or not) [09:38] also it's lspci, not lscpi. [09:38] ghil: yeah, got that :-) [09:39] :) [09:39] that makes me think I haven't updated my server's driver yet. [09:39] * lordievader still isn't awake... [09:39] those black windows... I've seen them before too. minimize+restore brings the window content back. [09:40] You think that's also the driver's fault? [09:40] not likely. I'm thinking the compositor. [09:40] or a brilliant mix of the two. [09:40] who's the compositor in this case? [09:41] kwin? [09:41] yep. [09:41] hmmm I thought they switched to lightdm... or maybe I'm mixing things up. They're both window managers? [09:42] lightdm is the display manager. [09:42] I don't see it in the process list [09:43] darn, I just turned off the second monitor, and the first one went black (other than cursor). So that issue is still there. And I still can't leave desktop effects on :-( [09:44] did you recently update Xorg? [09:45] did you try changing the effects from openGL to Xrender? [09:45] what's the xorg package name to check? [09:46] (Desktop Effects, Advanced, Compositing Type: Xrender) [09:46] I've had this problem for months now, so not sure if it followed an xorg update at the time [09:46] try Xrender first, then we'll see if we have to update xorg, but I don't think it's the problem. [09:47] ghil: and qt graphics system native or raster (it was raster, but when changing to xrender it reverted to native) [09:47] ? [09:47] yeah that's normal. [09:47] go for native. [09:47] Raster is somewhat slower anyway. [09:47] "failed to activate desktop effects..." [09:49] ghil: what next? [09:49] hmm..I've been checking forums (I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point) and you're definitely not alone. What is your graphic card? [09:50] nvidia 9300 [09:50] hmmm... I just tried opengl 2.0 again, but changed raster -> native [09:51] did it work? [09:51] turning on/off second monitor appears ok! [09:51] Ooooh. [09:51] :D [09:52] I'll leave it like this for now for a few days of natural use, see how it goes... [09:52] ghil: thanks! [09:52] and still wait for some panel freezes too [09:52] who knows, maybe they only occur with effects off :-) [09:53] :) [09:53] btw newer nvidia drivers don't get backported in repos right? [09:53] I'll have to stick with manual updates until the next release? [09:54] yeah no they don't. you can go a little bleeding edge and add the xedgers PPA though. [09:54] I wouldn't recommend it on a production machine, but if you're feeling lucky and know how to revert packages, it's always up to date. [09:55] https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates [09:55] ghil: I read about it, but got the impression it'll update all sorts of other stuff, and I'd rather keep it down to a minimum. [09:55] and the nvidia drivers installed dkms, so as I understand it there will be no problem with kernel updates etc. [09:56] oh it will. It updates Xorg/nvidia to it's latest incarnation always. It's not debian stable, if you know what I mean. [09:56] (I used to need to re-install the drivers each time the kernel was updated in older versions, if memory serves) [09:56] essentially yeah, but you can't be sure. [09:56] yeah an headers and image refresh was necessary each time. [09:57] but normally nowadays, everything's fine. [09:58] valorie, ghil: well thanks again, I'll run it like this and see to what new and exciting issues it takes me ;-) [09:58] good luck, if there's anything we're there :P [09:58] ghil: much appreciated :-) === ld is now known as Guest70918 [11:07] I'm wondering something weird...would it be possible to sync my configs (like my zshrc) through dropbox so that my server and computer and work computer all have the same configs? I think I'm gonna search for that :D [11:08] ghil, sure but you'll automate it [11:08] need to* [11:09] like on login or via cron [11:09] oh, via cron would be nice. o.O thanks for the tip vmusr [11:11] ghil, np just keep in mind that you'll have to make sure that the environment is perfectly the same [11:11] otherwise even an small update might screw you big time [11:14] I'll keep that in mind. thanks :) === raj01104 is now known as sark25 [11:22] #kde-in [13:21] Howdy all [13:22] happy new year [13:22] morning :) [13:23] happy new year to all === feisar is now known as Guest62638 [14:33] arrhg [14:34] ok so some oddness with my touchpad. it doesnt multi touch ... [14:39] and tpconfig only works with ps2 (/dev/psaux) devices??? [14:46] ok i need to resize the touch pad, this design is horrible. what software on linux lets you do that? windows has the synaptic software === thomas is now known as Guest72190 === Steakanbake|slee is now known as Steakanbake [16:09] looking for a method to prevent blank screen on this lenovo G500 when the HDMI is connected to an external monitor. [17:18] Can anybody help me? [17:19] I had the two monitors set up using "Twin View" and it worked great, but with the htird monitor it made me make it a separate x screen, so now I can move my cursor from one screen to another but I can't drag a window from one to the other. [17:43] ptomblin: can you manually switch screens using Kwin? [17:43] like when you open the window's menu and select Screen [17:43] No, it shows all three screens, but it won't move the window to them. [17:47] What I can do is add a panel to the other screens and start apps on them, but evidently if I have that app already running on the main screen, it goes there instead. [17:48] And the system settings -> display and monitor will only show the monitor that it's currently running on. === JeroenDeDauw is now known as JeroenDeDauw|afk === ahmed is now known as Guest65820 [19:03] Ok, now I have two options: [19:04] - I went into nvidia-settings an enabled xinerama, and things are working right (although they're a bit flickery) [19:04] - I booted from a live CD, and everything worked right, and wasn't flickery. [19:07] So supposing I wanted to get rid of all the fancy nvidia stuff and make it configure itself the way it does when I booted the live CD, what do I need to do? Delete xorg.conf? Blow away my .kde directory? === korrode is now known as Guest87738 [20:27] I hope someone can help me, I'm running Kubuntu 13.10, on an Acer laptop. I decided to install Wicd, I downloaded both Wicd, and a backup copy of Network Manager, and also a copy of Connman. NM, and Wicd are both debian.tar.gz, Connman is a .deb. I uninstalled NM, then Wicd would not intstall, neither would CM. Tried to reinstall NM no luck either. [20:28] When trying NM, or Wicd, in terminal I always get, "file not found", "file does not exist", or "not a directory". [20:31] garrett_, where you trying wicd from, it should be in your /home/user/Downloads file and may need to be extracted there [20:32] Actually I moved it to the home folder, so I wouldn't have to "cd" anywhere. I've read probably a hundred how-to's, and followed them completly, with no luck. [20:33] I extracted, read the "Read Me Install" file, followed it, but the terminal will not find it. Or gives some kind of error. === asus is now known as Guest39956 [20:35] garrett_, what wifi chip , lspci -nn | egrep -i 'net|wire' [20:51] is there irc channels for advice?
