[07:34] yes ty and you? [07:34] you never come say hi anymore [07:34] i'm good tnx. [07:34] hi plustwo [07:34] Happy new year guys [07:35] Gotango: how do you do? [07:35] Good ty and how is you plustwo [07:36] i'm very cool, tnx [07:36] Thats always good to hear :) [07:37] plustwo, Gotango is almost an ubuntero [07:37] wow! that's good news Kilos [07:37] as of when? [07:38] yip. i smile everytime we get a new one [07:38] dvd on its way [07:38] :) [07:38] lol , i hope so [07:38] Kilos is a great teacher and greeter :) [07:39] couldn't agree better Gotango :) [07:40] * plustwo had a short rest time [07:42] plustwo, kick the pro and tell him wake up [07:42] ! [07:42] ! [07:43] :) last time i heard from him, he was somewhere in kzn [07:43] the swine didnt even tell us [07:43] sneak [07:44] :) [07:48] Kilos i read on the web some ones pc that have the same specs as mine. The cpu when running 12.04 in unity 2D ran at 20% the whole time at idle too. The fan blew hard. I know 12.04 will just work on my pc , but the performance unity ask seems alot windows 7 uses 0% cpu at idle [07:49] no man the guys will help you sort it [07:50] i used to run something that monitors my use but dont even bother anymore [07:50] Can i get Gnome UI in 12.04 [07:51] and have 12.04 running on a dual core and single core [07:51] you can get anything you like [07:51] I got dual core [07:51] Okay cool [07:51] there is a thing called mate that installs and runs much faster [07:52] but its a bit more data use [07:52] i didnt think of it or could have added mate on the dvd [07:52] mate uses gnome2 if i remember right [07:53] A Xubuntu like interface will be fine for me [07:53] i dont like xubuntu [07:53] oh okay [07:53] mate is fast [07:54] Is mate another UI on top of ubuntu [07:55] it comes from mint [07:55] Okay i see thanks [07:55] but try unity first and see [07:56] i used mate for a while then decided to give unity a fair trial and got to enjoy it [07:57] Yeah i will try Unity in its minimalist version, tweak it so it use less resources and stuff [07:57] 20% is nothing man [07:58] Its alot for me, my lappies fan starts blowing hard at that number [07:58] you will see, using swap makes things faster [07:59] You mean Ram swap [07:59] there are lots of links to speed things up too if i remember right [07:59] wait, what? [07:59] ya [07:59] tell him ThatGraemeGuy [07:59] you never want to be swapping, that's terrible for performance [08:00] i thought swap is like a storage place for running stuff thats nbot urgent [08:01] so ram concentrates on the immediate needs [08:01] I dont use much programs when i'm making web apps. At most 6 running at the same time [08:01] So swap wont be such a big issue [08:01] slightly true, but swap usage should be minimal in general [08:02] it works automatically [08:02] let ubuntu decide for you [08:02] in a terminal run "free -m" and you can tell from there whether you have enough ram [08:02] lemme see [08:02] if you need more, get more. don't rely on swap to make up for ram shortfall [08:03] Okay good [08:03] disks are an order of magnitude slower than ram [08:03] Sadly i cant get more Ram, only a rocket scientist can open this lappy lol [08:04] total used free shared buffers cached [08:04] Mem: 1475 1379 96 0 55 745 [08:04] -/+ buffers/cache: 578 896 [08:04] Swap: 4761 0 4761 [08:04] what does that tell you ThatGraemeGuy [08:04] Gotango: what model is it? they usually have a little panel that you can access the ram slots via [08:04] but another 1GB will be pretty helpful [08:05] Kilos: looks good [08:05] yay [08:05] if free+cache is very low you have a problem [08:06] ah [08:06] 1379 "used" also includes the amount allocated to buffers and cache [08:06] if apps need memory, kernel will happily un-cache stuff from ram [08:07] ThatGraemeGuy its a 2009 Compaq laptop [08:07] Cant see a ram slot anywhere [08:07] thats what i say Gotango let ubuntu decide what to use and then see [08:07] underneath is normally the ram cover [08:08] ow, that sucks [08:08] hasnt that lappy got a ram cover? [08:08] Nope i can only remove the battery and HD [08:09] ouch [08:10] what make is it lemme google [08:10] Its got minority report year 3000 screws in i never saw such screws lol [08:11] Nothing in my electrician case is able to tackle that [08:11] ya they terrible things to open with all the screws and plastic clip in places [08:11] jewelers screwdrivers [08:11] A Compaq 615 [08:12] lol :D [08:14] A desktop pc will be better , but with the power going off here at unpredictable times. I cant afford a UPS now , maybe in future [08:14] i have power off probs too [08:14] luckily ext4 handles it well [08:15] I can imagine where you live its a problem [08:15] thats good [08:17] cant find where it is but that lappy is upgradable to 8g ram looks like [08:18] http://is.gd/Wba4tz [08:18] they want you to take it to hp peeps looks like [08:20] Yeah , but only qualified people can do anything physicaly technical to this lappy lol. Strange its not the case with most other laptop makers [08:22] Its a good one though , has worked 4 years 15 hours a day. Parts still works perfectly [08:23] hp make quality normally [08:23] http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/Compaq+Series/Compaq+615-upgrades.html [08:23] there is a video on how to install ram [08:23] but vids eat data [08:23] I have an hp i bought in april 2008 [08:24] been dropped countless times, 2 water spills and even a cup of coffee [08:24] still alive and kicking [08:24] lol [08:24] they make good stuff [08:24] the cup of coffee necessitated a keyboard replacement though [08:24] lol ThatGraemeGuy [08:25] ThatGraemeGuy, look at that link please [08:25] Thanks Kilos will check and see if i can find a way to reach the ram port and get another 1GB in there hopefully [08:25] on the left is installing memory [08:26] oh cool, thats useful [08:26] it will work with 1g but 2 will be much better [08:27] oh, that video is a dell [08:27] lol [08:28] ai! [08:29] maybe the dell is the same, thats a hp link [08:30] Hmm [08:32] I see R200 for 1Gb Ram . Will any laptop ram module work on all models [08:33] no [08:33] That sucks [08:33] they clash [08:34] i have the same prob on my desktop [08:34] gotta be same make [08:35] http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/productbulletin.html#spectype=worldwide&type=html&docid=13302 [08:35] oh well i dont need alot of ram for now. When i get a new pc i will make sure theres atleast 4GB in it [08:35] lemme try my single core pc with 1g ram [08:35] you need DDR2 667MHz or DDR2 800MHz [08:36] Aah thanks ThatGraemeGuy, DDR2 vs DDR3 :) [08:38] 12.04 works ok on 1g ram [08:38] and lappies are normally a bit faster than desktops [08:38] um no [08:39] Thanks Kilos , how does the cpu handle it [08:39] percentage wise [08:39] fine [08:39] just a bit slower then 1.5g [08:39] Kilos: performance is down to hardware specs, it has nothing to do with form factor [08:40] i dont understand ThatGraemeGuy [08:40] Aah then the dual core will help a bit [08:40] and lappies are normally a bit faster than desktops [08:40] that is just a silly claim to make [08:40] oh i said that because my sons slower lappy worked faster than his desktop [08:41] that has to do with the hardware, not the fact that its a laptop [08:41] oh i see what you say [08:42] well lappy has everything internal not addon modules [08:42] it doesn't matter [08:43] Kilos are you sure the remastersys dvd will install the same as a regular installer disc. Since its based on a OS thats already installed [08:43] don't make generalised statements like that, there are too many factors that just make the statement plain wrong [08:43] yessir [08:43] Okay thanks [08:43] i have installed a few times with remastersys dvds [08:44] Nice, i will like a dual boot at first with windows and ubuntu [08:45] i dunno how long postage takes. i think about a week [08:45] No worries , i waited 2 weeks for a parcel to arrive from portugal [08:45] ThatGraemeGuy, is there a command to check cpu usage [08:45] So this will be quicker [08:45] top [08:46] http://ubuntu-for-humans.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-use-top-and-htop-commands-to.html [09:10] ai! [09:11] stupid modem timed out again [09:12] wb Kilos [09:12] ty [09:14] yw [09:15] save this link Gotango [09:16] http://sms.postoffice.co.za/TrackingParcels/ [09:16] its at tswane hub now [09:17] Yep, i already got it on my browser speeddial Kilos. Saw it there earlier [09:17] Thanks [09:18] What kind of software did you include on the dvd [09:55] ai! [09:56] one of them modem days [10:21] Kilos is pppconfig enough to connect a usb modem [10:21] the software should be automatically installed [10:22] network manager [10:22] Not my usb stick got stock windows software [10:22] i hope it sees your modem [10:22] i had some probs with a foreign modem [10:23] ubuntu doesnt install the modem [10:23] you plug it in and network manager should see it [10:23] I will google a bit and see if it will work [10:23] Thats good [10:24] there is also sakis3g that works when nothing else does [10:25] 12.04 had some probs with auto enable connecting but i have a script that fixes it [10:27] I will try that if network manager dont see my modem, and this aswell http://askubuntu.com/questions/179324/huawei-e173-on-ubuntu-12-04 [10:27] but not all modems give probs [10:27] Yip , will have to see what happens :0 [10:27] :) [10:28] hehe [10:28] lol 0 and ) are on the same key [10:28] is that e173 before the e220 [10:30] Not sure what model number modem i got , i just typed " Kanguru modem ubuntu 12.04" [10:30] stop worrying man. we will sort the probs if and when they arise [10:30] But the help should work if i ever need it [10:31] lol atleast i want an internet connection on ubuntu before problems arise [10:32] the dvd will see it [10:33] I hope so :) [10:33] just dont let the install try upgrade while installing [10:33] i install without connecting online [10:34] No i dont want to connect to the internet when it installs [10:34] good [10:35] Will it show options to disable that [10:36] when you start the install there is a place to tick but usb modem dont work till you go the new mobile connection route with network manager [10:37] so only do that after reboot [10:37] Thats good. Yeah i saw that mobile broadband connection thing on a forum [10:38] So i will get the connection up after install and reboot. Hopefully it works as expected [10:38] it shows nicely in that link you put here [10:40] if you install reboot then plug it in the new mobile broadband connection should throw a popup window [10:41] great! will double cross those bridges when i get there [10:41] or even leave it plugged in while installing but dont enter the broadband info to connect then it should see it while doing hardware check [10:41] It sounds best to have it in while ubuntu is installing [10:55] there now i should stay online [10:55] changed modems [10:55] wb [10:55] thats good [10:55] e220 got some timeout prob [10:56] I dont think i got that one. Mine never times out. Atleast when i keep the ip blank [10:57] no its this old maodem [10:57] modem [10:57] even timesout on win7 [10:58] oh okay [10:58] some internal thing i think [10:59] one day ill get a new modem [10:59] yeah maybe, a hardware or software issue [10:59] first saving for modern motherboard and cpu [10:59] cpus cost a fortune [11:01] yeah , i used to dream of having a intel core i7 back in 2007 [11:01] but too expensive at that time [11:02] i7 still are expensive [11:02] Yes true [11:03] 3 to 3.5 grand [11:04] even an i3 is R1159 [11:05] One can always overclock a lower range cpu, but does'nt sound like a good idea [11:06] i think for basic stuff an i3 with 4g ram is fine [11:07] only serious gamers that need more i think [11:07] Yeah those specs will do fine for todays games too , but at lower graphics settings [11:08] i dunno all the ins and outs. im a hardware type [11:09] what you cant fix with a hammer isnt worth fixing [11:09] I play an online highscore game called Tricky truck all the time and have to set the 3D settings to no shaders, but then again my lappy specs are bad [11:09] lol true :) [11:10] They should make a place where people can smash old pc's and appliances with hammers, will make tons of money lol [11:11] lol [11:12] i collect old pcs others throw away [11:12] You can make like google and connect all of them u into a super pc :) [11:13] i dunno how to do that [11:14] but this dual core works kiff [11:14] There are special software needed to make that happen i think, plus cables [11:15] yeah the more cores the better [11:16] i dunno why they dont use xbox and ps3 cpus [11:16] they got like 8 cores i think [11:16] but nowhere to add ram [11:19] true , maybe too expensive to produce [15:17] Maaz, coffee on [15:17] * Maaz flips the salt-timer [15:20] Maaz, hurry [15:20] Making decent coffee is an art Kilos and should never be rushed [15:21] superfly, what doing? [15:21] Coffee's ready for Kilos! [15:21] Maaz, ty [15:21] You are welcome Kilos [15:21] lag here today [16:40] ! [17:31] Sup [18:40] whew [18:41] maybe an early night might bring more peeps here tomorrow [18:41] night all. sleep tight
