[03:50] hey, just installed ubuntu studio lts and seem to be having an issue with puredata [03:51] won't open documentation and audio/midi test patch [03:51] from error window.... [03:51] couldn't open "/usr/lib/puredata/doc/1.manual/1.introduction.txt": no such file or directory [03:52] mreut: what test patch? [03:53] mreut: it could be that that documentation has just changed or moved.. or been phased out [03:53] mreut: i would try and refer to upstream documentation [03:54] test patch under "Media"->"Test Audio and MIDI..." [03:55] mreut: i would just skip that, and start using it.. see if you can get it to work [03:56] I'll give it a wiz-bang and see what happens, normally fire that patch up first thing whenever I do a new system just to make sure everything is sane. [03:56] mreut: could be the patch is gone/missing [03:56] mreut: i dont think we ship it anymore.. and im not sure why [04:01] holstein: No dice thus far. Just running alsa at the moment. [04:01] mreut: i thought it required JACK? [04:03] holstein: I've ran it on other systems using only alsa, though it offers support for JACK [04:03] mreut: ubuntustudio ships pulse [04:03] holstein: Has ubuntu studio tweeked it for JACK only? [04:03] holstein: ahhhhhhh [04:03] mreut: AFAIK, we only repackage and drop it in [04:03] you'll want to be using JACK anyway [04:04] lubuntu doesnt (or didnt last i checked) ship pulse [04:07] bah, doesn't want to play nice with JACK either :( [04:08] going to double check everything just to make sure I didn't make any dumb moves. [04:08] mreut: sure.. any errors too, feel free and share [04:09] mreut: you can try #opensourcemusicians ...i just dont use it [04:09] got nothing first hand to helpout [04:09] I'll check out that channel if things still look grim, thanks! [04:10] mreut: Hi. I use pure data a lot [04:10] It's purely the way debian packagers packaged it, and more or less, the way it is in original code [04:11] mreut: If you prefer pd-extended, you could add the "official" ppa for it [04:11] just run the command: [04:12] I'm fine with vanilla for my needs, just need something to come out to my headphones for me to be happy. [04:12] sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eighthave/pd-extended && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pd-extended [04:12] mreut: pd uses alsa by defailt [04:13] mreut: Not pulseaudio [04:13] mreut: It can be a bit tricky, but if you want to use jack instead, just make sure to start jack first [04:13] mreut: A few pd releases are a bit buggy [04:13] hmm, when I was running xubuntu, it more or less worked right out of the box. [04:14] mreut: It's the same OS [04:14] do things work better in ubuntu studio v13? [04:14] more stable version of pd there? [04:14] It's the exact same package [04:15] What you get with Ubuntu Studio is preconfigured low latency [04:15] I understand it being the same OS, which is why I'm perplexed that a fresh install doesn't provide any sound out. [04:15] All the installable software is exactly the same between all the Ubuntu flavors [04:15] you were likely using xubuntu 12.04 or something other than 13.10, and you are now on ubuntustudio 13.10.. or the other way around [04:16] It's actually exactly the same between Debian and Ubuntu. We import all the applications from Debian [04:16] ahh ok [04:16] 12.10 and 13.04 are certainly different [04:17] I was running xubuntu 13.10 previously [04:17] Some core stuff is not the same [04:17] Ubuntu Studio uses linux-lowlatency [04:17] yep yep [04:18] linux-lowlatency is essentially linux-generic, what Ubuntu and all the other flavors use [04:18] its the versions that are so diffrent.. not the flavours so much [04:18] It's just a bit more responsive [04:18] Exactly [04:18] the packages in xubuntu 13.10 and ubuntustudio 13.10 will be the same.. same versions.. if they are installed in both versions [04:18] they share the same repos [04:18] They use the same repositories [04:18] Right :) [04:19] so here is my real problem then, have an [osc~ 440]--->---[*~ 0.5]--->---[dac~] [04:19] no sound, set to alsa [04:20] mreut: That has more to do with sound setup in pd [04:21] mreut: I would suggest to you to drop into #datafow, which is the channel mostly used for pd [04:21] huh, maybe I just don't have sound period..... [04:21] no sound from firefox either... [04:21] alsa is one of the many sound systems [04:21] hmmmmm [04:21] When do you not have sound from firefox? [04:21] Always, or just sometimes? [04:22] In Ubuntu , there is a sound system called pulseaudio, which uses alsa drivers [04:22] background info: I just installed ubuntu studio about 20 min ago [04:22] There's also the pro audio server called jack, which also uses alsa drivers [04:22] so at this point, I haven't heard anything yet. [04:22] There's also plain alsa [04:23] mreut: What kind of audio device do you have? [04:23] !proaudio [04:23] For information on professional audio tools in Ubuntu, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro [04:23] just using headphone out on my desktop [04:23] mreut: Pleade read that page first :) [04:24] HDA Intel - VIA VT1708S [04:24] It's a regular audio device [04:24] hdmi out? [04:24] you said headphones, sorry [04:24] 3.5mm hooked up to my headphones [04:25] alsamixer shows master level at -13.5 dB gain [04:25] Should work. Just make sure all levels and options are set correctly for pulseaudio, when it comes to firefox [04:26] To test sound, please reboot the computer, and only use whatever application it is you want to use, for testing purposes [04:26] Like firefox [04:27] I"ll reboot and see what happens [04:29] nada [04:30] is there a terminal audio test utility? [04:30] !info cvlc [04:30] Package cvlc does not exist in saucy [04:31] vlc has cvlc which is in the terminal [04:31] Running 12.04 LTS fresh install with all updates [04:31] mreut: after installing vlc, running "cvlc" will run vlc in the terminal [04:32] to test alsa, try aplay [04:34] I forget what the pulseaudio equivalent tool is [04:34] you can basically do: aplay /path/to/myaudiofile.wav [04:36] nothing [04:36] :( [04:36] I shouldn't be awake at this hour. bb later :) [04:36] sweet dreams [04:36] mreut: you probably only need to set the right output in pulseaudio controls [04:36] whatever the app is called.. I forget again [04:37] Pulse Audio Volume Control? [04:37] Sure [04:38] doesn't look like that's the one, doesn't have anything worth mention [04:38] in regards to my problem [04:40] wondering if the updates did something to my system [04:42] calling it a night [04:43] zzz [15:57] Eureka! I think I found the answer to the whole EFI problem thus far. [15:57] (Signed image aside) [16:01] The problem occurs with the EFI boot files being placed under the /EFI/ubuntustudio/ dir instead of /EFI/ubuntu/ in the ESP. [16:03] The pragmatic thing to do would be to alter the default GRUB 2 config when the EFI boot files are created to look in (ESP)/EFI/ubuntustudio/ for grub.cfg , but another workaround for now is to rename the ubuntustudio folder to ubuntu [16:04] (which would also make the $prefix correct) [17:03] Yo [17:03] (wrong channel) [17:05] Also, is there a plan to set more of the standard Ubuntu settings in xfce4-settings-manager like Xubuntu? [17:37] You would be most welcome to help us out on this stuff [17:37] The plan has been for a while to base everything on existing DE's and offer the possibility to install any of them [17:37] We'd just keep our own theme [17:38] The menu also, but that's more of an application the way we package it [17:38] SonikkuAmerica: ^ [17:39] Be glad to... [17:40] I'm a bit out of time today, but just log in to #ubuntustudio-devel, and hang out [17:40] k [19:34] Does anyone know how to setup a Steinberg UR22 USB audio interface in Ubuntu Studio? [19:36] Is that a no? [20:19] I'm in love with an anorexic girl that thinks eating is moreally wrong [20:22] Patero-ng: maybe you would be more happy talking about that in #ubuntu-offtopic
