[00:03] question what are the specs for hard ware for the 32bit version [00:05] wolfstar: see "minimum requirements" at the bottom of http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/ [00:06] Thanks === em is now known as emma [04:48] hello === dan87 is now known as danmc [05:17] just tried installing xubuntu-13.10, 32-bit. Installs ok but doesn't seem to configure either ethernet interface correctly. I don't much care which of the wired ethernet ports I use but I need one to work. One is a 3com 3c905C-TX/TX-M and the other is an intel pro100 VE.. lspci lists them both. Not sure of how to proceed. [05:18] i would try and remove or disable one in the bios.. both should work, but the intel would be where i would start... should be that it "just works", even the way you are doing it with both. how did they work from the live CD? [05:19] didn't work with the live cd either. [05:20] hardware is ok, I booted a NetBSD install CD to mount a NetBSD partition off the hard drive and retrieve some files via the network before wiping the drive. [05:20] will try to disable one in the bios [05:20] ifconfig in the terminal might help as well [05:28] holstein: I disabled the intel (the on board one, and the only one I saw how to disable in the bios) and now the other "Just Works". Thanks! [05:29] danmc: im sure theres some way to make them both work, or one work while both are enabled, but this is the easy way :) [05:57] I have set xubuntu to mirror displays with a television and immediately lost display on the computer, reboot did not solve this issue. How can I reset the default displayt settings during boot before i lose display? [08:29] Is there an icon only task manager for Xfce? [08:30] what do you mean? [08:41] TheSheep, http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/uploads/applets/DCF3-Y4KB-FLEW.png [08:44] CountryfiedLinux: what am I looking at? [08:44] The app windows are grouped to the icon like in Windows 7. [08:45] you can set the window list plugin in the panel to only display icons, and I think it has grouping [08:45] How do I do that TheSheep ? [08:45] right-click on it, select preferences and see the options there [08:46] I'll try that thanks brb [08:48] if it hijacked the right-click menu for other things, you can also get to the properties through Panel -> Panel Preferences -> Items [10:20] hi people, I want to know how to create my own Appications Menu without affecting the original one [10:20] can someone help? [10:21] littlebit, any changes made to your menu are sandboxed to you - not to the global system [10:22] cfhowlett: i know, when freshly installing xubutnu I have my appicatoins menu. I want to leave that and add another one with my custom appications to it. I did a right click to the panel and added a applications menu and changed the contents of that menu. But the original one gets affected. [10:26] littlebit, go to the properties for the application menu, in panel properties [10:26] Juv1228: ok, and then [10:26] and check "use custom menu file" instead of "use the default menu" [10:26] littlebit, if you changed the admin acccount, that would effect global values ... [10:27] cfhowlett: i know, but i'm not in the admin account [10:27] cfhowlett, he wants two application menu items on his panel, with different menus [10:27] it has nothing to do with default/global/system values, its which menu the application menu item is set to use [10:28] Juv1228: and from there? where do I go? [10:31] littlebit, copy /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu to ~/.config/menus/mynewmenu.menu [10:32] Juv1228: ok done [10:33] now make your second application menu item use that menu file instead [10:33] Juv1228: ok [10:34] unfortunately the built in settings UI doesnt seem to let you edit the custom menu, but there are programs available for it [10:38] Juv1228: where can I find the documentation of that grammar [10:48] littlebit, from a terminal do this [10:48] alacarte mynewmenu.menu [10:49] it should open up the menu editor for the new file [10:51] Juv1228: ok, but one last question. What if I want a dropdown menu ONLY for my office programs [10:52] just delete all the other items from the new menu file [11:32] Juv1228: ok, it works. but one last thing, if I want the contents of 'office' submenu only to be shown, how do I do that? [11:34] in the menu editor just select the root on the left, and then add item [11:34] duplicate all the items in the office submenu and then delete it [11:35] as far as i know you cannot drag/drop the items out of their submenu, so you just have to recreate them in the menu editor, or manually edit the .menu file in a text editor [11:59] hello === Guest48567 is now known as Aqua [11:59] oh already registered? :( === Aqua is now known as mr_Block [12:00] my screen resolution cant be changed, its stuck on a low resolution [12:01] using ati mobility radeon hd 5650 [12:01] amd phenom II x4 mobile processor N930 (2GHz) [12:01] using xorg drivers [12:15] hi cfhowlett [12:15] anyone awake [12:15] yes [12:15] do you know anything about gpu drivers on xubuntu? [12:16] i was about to ask for help with the same thing [12:16] can't get my r9 series card to display [12:16] ah [12:16] well, mine displays, but the resolution is stuck on low [12:16] no other options [12:16] knowing nothing about r9 ... sorry [12:16] i have a radeon 5605 [12:16] 5650* [12:17] mobility radeon HD 5650 [12:20] meh, ill do a reinstall === xubuntu is now known as Guest37292 [14:58] after updating to SS, all that loads is firefox and I get a blank grey background. Cant open any other programs [15:02] essentially, all I can do on this comp is internet [15:42] xubuntu885: i don't use SS, but you mean you dont see any panel or menu? [15:52] xubuntu885 i can help if you need === GTB3NW_AWAY is now known as GTB3NW [16:29] hi [16:30] need help please === GTB3NW is now known as GTB3NW_AWAY [17:00] That's right, no panel, no menu, but also my background's gone, as well as desktop icons [17:01] just have a grey screen with browser window [17:22] xubuntu885: do you have a question a volunteer can help address? [17:27] how to continue installation....it doesn't move [17:29] xubuntu885: if "it" is referring to the mouse, and the machine is locked up, it likely wont continue.. i would check tty [17:29] !tty [17:29] To get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login). To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution [17:30] make certain it is locked up.. [17:30] it's written : --auto --force --quiet [17:31] i didn't instruct to stop installation [17:31] xubuntu885: so, are you locked up? or able to access tty's? [17:32] what do you mean with tty ? [17:32] xubuntu885: see the link above ^^ [17:32] specifically " use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back " [17:33] xubuntu885: if you are able to access those, the machine is not "locked up" === GTB3NW_AWAY is now known as GTB3NW === GTB3NW is now known as GTB3NW_AWAY [21:46] hi, when I am in a folder (in Thunar) and already used the keyboard and thus marked a folder/file... is it possible to run "open terminal here" somehere? [21:47] if I hit the context menu key on my keyboard, it doesn't show [21:52] What is your "context menu key" ? When I hit mine, I see "Open Terminal Here" about 3/4 the way down. [21:55] it's the one right of "alt gr" [21:55] ... on my German keyboard, that is :/ === gry is now known as Guest38163 [21:57] drc, sure I see that as well, but only if I have done *nothing* in the folder besides entering it [21:57] And you are now sitting on a file? What happens if you go to a folder? [21:58] yes I am now sitting on a file [21:59] As Unit193 says, the menu different for files and folders. What else (the not "nothing") would you have done in the folder? [21:59] well I rename something, and then I decide to move something to another partition [22:00] like I just did: I renamed two mp3 files and wanted to cp them onto my windows partition's mp3 folder [22:00] had to click into the white space with the mouse to have that "Open Terminal Here" in the context menu (I suppose it's not a context menu then, stricly speaking) [22:00] So, what you want to do is hi-lite a , hit the menu context key, select Open Terminal Here...and then do something in the terminal? [22:00] yes! [22:01] nope, no can do (afaik) [22:01] can't you be nice and lie? *smileyface* [22:01] meh, damnit. :( [22:02] Maybe you can "configure custom action", but I have no knowledge on that (never have done it). [22:02] I have done that, it's pretty easy, you just have to add an underscore before the letter you want to use [22:03] or is it possible to un-highlight a file? [22:03] henrylinux, glad you asked. [22:04] press esc? [22:04] because it is. [22:04] Sysi, nope :O [22:04] :P [22:04] Ctrl + space [22:04] on the highlit file [22:04] henrylinux: I can figure out how to unhighlight a file (with just the keybiard) :( [22:04] just quick t&e up in dis b and evening is saved. wohoo. [22:05] wow, you're right :) [22:05] drc, ctrl + space pon the highlit .... – nvm :) [22:05] You Learn something new evety day.... [22:05] Or just use pcmanfm and hit 'F4' for the terminal. :P [22:05] thanks :) [22:05] np [22:34] HEj [22:35] Farbror Peyam här [23:10] I was looking online for a solution to this bug and was not able to find anything; I was hoping someone here might be familiar with it. I am using Xubuntu, latest release and when I select text in Abiword the selection colour is black, making the text unreadable. I have tried every GTK theme and it hasn't made a difference.
