[11:59] hi charl [12:02] hi Kilos [12:49] gleetings [12:50] hi liamT [13:00] hi there [13:02] hi jhb_hacker [13:02] long time no see [13:03] long time indeed, ive been exploring elementaryOS all this time [13:04] ok [13:04] and elemenaryos cant find ubuntu-za [13:04] bad os [13:05] ? [13:05] we have a meeing next tueasday night at 8.30pm hey [13:05] come join us \ [13:05] hi psyatw charl [13:05] here [13:05] no problem [13:05] gonna do some discussing the net in za [13:05] look for solutions i hope [14:06] Hi Kilos . I think i will switch to the Xfce-desktop in Ubuntu. Its 140MB in the repositories. [14:06] ok [14:07] its in synaptic [14:07] Yes [14:07] then it will show what all is needed [14:08] Ticked marked and ticked Apply, that gave me 140MB. Plus some basic apps aswell, like word processor and music player stuff [14:08] cool [14:09] Thats what i want, a effectsless desktop environment [14:09] If i knew it sooner iwould've had it by now [14:10] goodd [14:11] many peeps like xfce [14:11] i didnt [14:11] Since the gpu takes up over 200MB ram and whats left is 740MB. Unity is wasting extra space [14:11] prefer kde and unity [14:12] Ya if you got the hardware for them [14:13] So Xfce with all its minimal everything, will work for me. [14:13] im running unity on a 2.8g cpu with 1g ram [14:13] bit slow but useable [14:13] ya its much faster [14:14] Yes unity is usuable by me too, but still a bit much on the hardware use side [14:15] thats the nice part about ubuntu you can add on other gui's and choose at boot time which one to use [14:15] I will use the full unity when i got a pc that can handle that [14:15] just above where you type in password on login there is a little icon on the top right of the window [14:16] thats where you choose [14:17] Ya i like that option too. I was always using Unity 3d , then found that way to change to 2D. But 2D unity still a bit much, so Xfce will have to do [14:17] ya unity is a bit heavy [14:17] loves lotsa ram [14:18] im gonna start building custom pcs so you can get one from me one day [14:19] I saw some figures of Unity using 400MB ram ,and Xubuntu using 190MB on a same benchmark [14:19] i couldnt even get unity installed with under 640m [14:19] ya i will like to have a pc you built [14:20] but then maybe it because of old hardware [14:21] will work out prices [14:22] the killer in pcs is the cpu cost [14:22] Thats true. I just want a basic interface, like winxp will do fine as a look. Fancy Gui's is not what i want now. [14:22] Ya thats true. A core i3 will be fine too [14:23] bottom of the range will be a dual core 3ghx with 4g ram [14:23] Aslong as it dont cost more than 7k [14:23] just built one , it flies [14:23] nope [14:24] Ah cool [14:24] i3 is 1200 just for the cpu [14:24] dual for R600 [14:25] Is intel really better than AMD [14:25] that ewxtra 500 can nearly get a 500gB hdd [14:26] i have never tried any amd stuff [14:29] eish [14:29] what inetpro ? [14:29] who's running ntp.is.co.za ? [14:29] what is it [14:29] time server [14:29] ? [14:30] set your time manually [14:30] hehe [14:30] looks like their ntpd is down since a day after our attack last week [14:30] Kilos: ai! [14:30] bring it up in the meet tuesday next [14:30] ai! [14:30] plenty of resources rely on the time service man [14:31] oh ok [14:31] see http://www.time.org.za/ [14:32] you want me to read all that? [14:32] ai! [14:32] ok hang on, I suspect there's something else playing here [14:33] the traffic might be blocked further down the line [14:33] oh cant you get it to open [14:33] Ai, everytime the modem overheats it disconnects [14:33] ai! [14:34] put fan or get new one [14:34] what modem? [14:34] of dothought it was inetpro [14:34] you can remove the cover then they maintain better [14:35] Its a hot summer day here though i'm sweating. Dunno if its that too [14:35] matches your lappy that modem [14:35] Its a usb stick modem [14:35] modems are supposed to work even in hot weather [14:36] ian had one did same as yours [14:36] removing the cover sorted the prob [14:36] The usb pin gets too hot to touch then it disconnects [14:37] whew [14:37] not heat from the lappy? [14:38] My system temperature readings are below 60 though [14:38] feel around the usb socket [14:39] try the modem in another one maybe [14:39] The lappy is hot, but the hard drive is cooking [14:39] you work too hard [14:40] Feels cooler where the modem is plugged in. Just the modem itself is so hot [14:41] Nope hardly visit sites [14:42] thats an unhappy lappy that [14:42] where did you get it? [15:04] later all [15:04] oh my inetpro wat breek jy [15:05] eish nee, ek's onskuldig [15:05] ok [15:13] The modem wont connect with other ports. It gives the same heat though [15:14] But thats ok, its probably the weather here affecting it [15:15] whew [15:57] ai! [15:57] lol [15:58] Will see if thiings improve when the wheather is cooler [16:02] yeah [16:02] you got no breeze there? [16:03] Ya breeze here coming in the room, but humidity is a bit high [16:06] Dunno why they ship firefox as default in Xfce-desktop. I dont think its that lightweight [16:08] nope [16:08] but its everybodys favourite browser [16:09] Ya its a great browser for web developers [16:09] got many debug features too, and plugins for everything [20:02] hi guys [20:04] hi somaunn [20:13] hi Kilos [20:13] what's new here [20:13] same old. quiet [20:14] was out for a long long time [20:18] yeah [20:46] night all . sleep tight
