[00:01] "Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU" [00:02] hello brainwash the creater of puppy linux noticed a number of libs ubuntu were using that were buggy when he created the woof building scripts that used ubuntu packages for th first to build puppy. he reported this to ubuntu who continue to use these buggy packages. these were related to display libs. You must have seen fonts not rendering properly in ubuntu based distros. I think that's why ubuntu is abandoning xorg [00:04] xubuntu623: the majority of xubuntu users does not experience any of your mentioned issues [00:05] xorg might be old and outdated somewhat, but it still does its job [00:07] a faulty display driver is most likely the cause, what hardware do you exactly use? [00:08] and feel free to create a bug report, simply run "ubuntu-bug xorg" [00:11] Hello brainwash I think xubuntu's desktop look and feel is one of the best Ive seen. you understand what i mean by disappearing icons. if i open setting manager nearly all icons are missing and only reappear when the mouse hovers over them. Even images in firefox behave the same. Its got to be related to rendering. As i've experienced this on laptops and desktops I can't be the only one user to have brought all hardware that's not [00:18] xubuntu623: sadly I'm not able to find a similar case via google search :( [00:36] hello brainwash, me again with missing icon problem. OK if I login as vanilla xfce all icons etc render. if i login as xubuntu their playing up again. something xubuntu devs do to create xubuntu xfce is causing the problem. I'll just login as xfce desktop not xubuntu desktop. Thanks for taking the time to answer. hopefully i'm the only one experiencing this. i believe it's a xubuntu bug not ubuntu. [00:37] xubuntu115: how about as another user? or, with your config removed from the equation? [00:39] hello xubuntu115 this is a fresh install. It been happening for a number of releases now. [00:40] xubuntu115: so, its not happening with another user? [00:47] hello back again login as guest as no other user same icon rendering problem. now running in xfce vanilla desktop icons now happy. [00:49] Dear friends, I'm downloading Xubuntu 12.04 on my virtual machine [00:49] xubuntu301: what graphics hardware? is compositing on in the xubuntu session and off in the xfce one? [00:50] played with setting and now desktop looks like xubuntu. now the mystery of what xubuntu devs have modified? it can't be missing libs. [00:50] xubuntu301: how about compositing? [00:52] show shadows under regular and popup windows is unticked in compostor [00:53] xubuntu301, try turning off the compositor completely [00:54] knome already tried that with brainwash made no difference. [00:55] that would be a valid reason for graphics glitches on *only* your system, with your graphics hardware [00:57] xubuntu301: is this only on that particular hardware? or are you able to make it happen on other machines? [00:57] right now login as xfce session and all is correct. on a EeePC 900A same problem. Dell Desktop same problem. Now on another desktop running intel motherboard ame problem. i just assumed for years others were having this problem and in future releases it would get fixed. [00:59] xubuntu301: its not a regular thing.. how do you install? [01:06] burn cd/dvd with different burners that also burn ubuntu, fedora which install fine and run installer. [01:08] xubuntu301: so, xfce in xubuntu is the only thing that does this for you? and it has in *every* release of xubuntu? have you ever installed another ubuntu iso and added the xubuntu-desktop package? [01:15] Somewhere around 11.10 / 12.04 the problem started occuring that's why i was a little diappointed that it hasn't beenfixed earlier. When it comes to installing ubuntu then xubuntu on top I can't remember. Normally when you add xubuntu over ubuntu or kubuntu it's not the same so i stick to the desktop I really want in the first place. If you are one of the great devs who create Xubuntu. it would be worth asking if others have had t [01:17] xubuntu301, i can't remember anybody else having the issue [01:18] xubuntu301, what you need to do is; 1) file a bug 2) attach a screenshot of your problem 3) keep following the bug and give any information people looking at the bug ask for [01:18] Error: Launchpad bug 2 could not be found [01:23] knome is there a bug report for xubuntu or it reported to ubuntu only [01:23] xubuntu301, you can file a bug report against xubuntu, yes. [01:24] xubuntu301, i would suggest filing it against xubuntu-default-settings, because if the bug is as you have described, it has something to do with settings [01:24] xubuntu301, also, please attach your hardware information to the bug. [01:27] I followed what i thought was the link where is xubuntu's bug report? [01:28] xubuntu301, run 'ubuntu-bug xubuntu-default-settings' in a terminal [02:37] Hello all. I updated my xubuntu desktop from 12.04 to 13.10 and it looks like the multimedia keys from keyboard do not manage to control my music player (banshee). I've seen quite a few threads on askubuntu and other forums, but nothing worked. I wonder if someone has finally managed to find some resolution to this bug? [02:45] lullis: not that im aware of.. i usually just map whatever i want [02:46] There is a proposed fix to xubuntu-default-settings, but shouldn't be hard to set up. === monkeynaut is now known as monkeynaut_brb === monkeynaut_brb is now known as monkeynaut [02:47] The interesting details: I use banshee and nuvolaplayer... when I use banshee, volume keys work. When I start nuvolaplayer, the play-pause/prev/next/stop keys work, but then volume keys stop working. [02:50] It seems like nuvola uses non-standard dbus interfaces, which is okay except for breaking the volume keys. The thing I don't understand is banshee. It does seem to have all dbus library/service installed. [03:23] i was going to muck with my panels in xubuntu, will i be able to get the defaults back easily if i screw things up? [03:25] Sure, just nuke .config/xfce/panel/ (or thereabouts.) and restart the panel. [03:25] or, test with the guest user.. or a test user.. or in VM, or with a live CD [03:27] .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-panel.xml and .config/xfce4/panel/, or as above. [03:29] hmm... that would have been a good idea lol [03:29] thanks [03:40] wooo! Can't wait till this install is done [03:41] keep getting errors [04:21] wow xubuntu is awesome -- so customizable [04:43] help [04:44] this laptop had windoze 8 and i can't stand it [04:45] xubuntu191: how can we help you? please use the #xubuntu-offtopic channel for chat [04:46] i want to know how to get rid of the pop out on the right side of the screen [04:47] xubuntu191: sure.. just elaborate about what the "pop out" is.. maybe take a screenshot if you think it will help a volunteer understand you better [04:49] http://is11.snstatic.fi/img/978/1288646664471.jpg [04:50] maybe I can explain when i move the cursor to the right edge of the screen in voyager ubuntu desk top the numbers pop out in the way and i would like to move tem so that doesnt happen [04:51] xubuntu191: voyager will provide support.. they have their own channels and support team [04:51] ok [04:52] #voyager [04:53] cd [06:17] hey guys! [06:17] ive got a dumb question [06:18] I want to install ubuntu onto a HD on a fresh computer, if I use a bootable USB stick can I install it from there or will I be running it off of the USB stick? [06:18] both [06:19] okay but once I install I can take out the USB [06:19] ofc [06:20] K I just got worried I wouldnt be able to install it and be stuck running it from USB [06:20] swig: just make sure to install the bootloader to the hdd not the usb [06:36] anyone have a link for a net install ISO for the not yet released Xubuntu 14.04? [06:37] (going to hit up google here pretty soon and see if he has one) [06:38] que tal [06:38] WalterN: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso [06:38] ooo [06:39] Unit193: thanks :3 [06:39] Sure, guessing you know how to switch to 64bit if needed. [06:39] I do? [06:41] oh there we go [06:41] http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/ [06:41] dododo [06:41] Unit193: thanks again [06:41] Sure, have fun. [10:05] hello, 2 questions [10:06] 1 how can I stop mousepad from being default open with any file that isn't text file ? [10:06] 2 how can't i upgrade to 13.10 xubuntu without a iso or cd dvd ? [10:10] xubuntu804, 2) How do you mean? What version are you running today? [10:10] 13.04 xubuntu [10:10] mousepad may be might be fix if i upgrade [10:13] and about 2nd question ? [10:13] xubuntu804: run update-manager -d [10:14] right click on the file you want to open, in properties you can select what program to open that kind of files with [10:15] xubuntu804: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SaucyUpgrades [10:17] thanks [10:20] hello everyone [10:21] im new at the world of xubuntu, and i have a problem . [10:21] maybe someone can help me [10:22] i have a laptop with processor, pentium M770 2.1ghz, but when instaling xubuntu the processor stays always at 800mhz, with is less then half of power i can use [10:22] the indicator-cpufreq and stuff like that dont work. [10:23] simply looks like they cant even detect my processor. how can i do this? how can i incresse the speed ot my processor do get the real 2.1ghz [10:24] xubuntu508: start a cpu benchmark and check if the cpu clock rises. [10:25] how can i start that? there is something pre-instaled to do it or need to run terminal dor that? [10:25] for* [10:25] xubuntu508: http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-benchmark-your-system-cpu-file-io-mysql-with-sysbench [10:26] ty, let me check [10:27] and if the cpu clock dont rises? [10:33] ok i finished the test, and dont looks like it raise [10:35] stays at 800mhz,,,, i really like the linux but at this speed its almost impossible run it, since in windows i can get the 2.1ghz :/, please help me [10:37] i have a laptop with processor, pentium M770 2.1ghz, but when instaling xubuntu the processor stays always at 800mhz, with is less then half of power i can use [10:37] the indicator-cpufreq and stuff like that dont work. [10:45] xubuntu508: check this tool http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-cpufreq-plugin [10:46] xubuntu508: check there if you can change the CPU clock [10:48] ok let me look at it [10:54] i have instaled the packadge how can i launch it? [10:57] ok, already found, it says this: the system dont support cpu scalling, only the cpu freq will show [10:57] :/ [10:57] this means i dont have that modules instaled? [10:58] " scalling driver = No scalling driver available" [10:58] xubuntu508: run "yes" in terminal and then check the frequency [10:59] kernel should automatically adjust frequency to save power [10:59] you can kill yes by pressing ctrl c [10:59] i always get 800mhz and my processor is a pentium M770 2.1 ghz [10:59] the processor freq dont change [11:00] it keeps at 800 [11:00] how are you checking the frequency? [11:01] you might need to run couple instances of yes [11:01] well, right now i have a widget i installed, cpu information similar do indicator-cpufreq [11:01] but i can check it in terminal too. [11:02] cat /proc/cpuinfo [11:02] I'd rather use that [11:02] both give me only 800 :/ [11:03] my it says processor Pentium M770 2.1 :/.... is this a non-supported processor or something? [11:03] but* [11:04] I still think it's just not stressed enough to need higher frequency [11:06] maybe is that but i get this message [11:07] scalling driver= No scalling driver available, [11:07] so if i get this from cpu-freq how can it scales automaticly? [11:07] that should cause the freq to be stuck on highest frequency [11:08] should let me scale manually right, because maybe i whant to run in low speed at mornings and high speed at afternoon ( kiding) [11:09] however, if it stucks at highest frequency i should get 2.1ghz and no 800 [11:09] what governor is active? [11:10] how i know that? [11:11] cpufreq-info [11:13] ok first it says the cpufreq its not instaled and i should install the cpufreq-utilis [11:14] then says this [11:15] loading cpufreq kernel modules [Fail] [11:15] CPUfreq Utilities: setting ondemand Cpufreq governos... [11:15] disable, governor nor available ... [ok] [11:15] :( what this means [14:54] hello everyone, [14:54] someone up to help me? [14:57] Voyajer, tell us your problem and we'll see if anyone knows the solution to it [14:59] so this morning i come here but no solution for my problem--- let me explain it for you --- i have a latptop with the fallowing specs: [14:59] pentium M770 2.1ghz [14:59] i install the distro Voyager, with is based on Xubuntu [14:59] witch* [15:00] however i found one problem, the distro xubuntu a voyager are really amazing, but the problem is my processor only runs at 800mhz,, really get stuck in that [15:00] and should be running 2.1,, i already stressed it to see if raises, but looks like no way to increase de processor speed. [15:01] i also ready in internet fro this kind of processor i should build my own kernel, welll, as you figure im no pro in linuz so i cannot build kernels :/ [15:01] can you help me with some sort of soluction or workarround? [15:02] the indicator-cpufreq dont work by the way, [15:04] Voyajer: have you tried the xfce cpufreq plugin? [15:04] this one ------ http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-cpufreq-plugin [15:04] Voyajer: does this plugin show more then one frequency? [15:05] no, actually it says something like - cannot change cpu freq [15:06] Voyajer: run this command pls and paste the output on paste.ubuntu.com [15:06] Voyajer: sudo dmidecode -t processor | grep "Speed" [15:08] right now i cannot run that, im not in that specific machine. but i will notice the terminal code and run as soon as possible. If you cannot help me further without that, i return later with the output of the code :) [15:09] but basicly i already have run that, and should tell me the current speed, the model, and the maximum speed allowed right? [15:09] Voyajer: this command will tell if the specific cpu can change the clockspeed [15:09] Voyajer, voyager isn't really supported on this channel [15:10] i say voyager because is what i have now, but if i instal xubuntu the problem is the same, but if need i can reinstal xubuntu and come back later [15:10] the question it will be the same [15:10] should i install xubuntu then? [15:10] the problem sounds like it's probably unrelated, but whatsoever, we aren't supporting other distros here [15:11] ok, sorry then i tough as xubuntu based you can help me, but i understand :), let me reinstal xubuntu and come back later. [15:11] Voyajer, you were asking the same question yesterday but didn't tell you were using voyager. how do we know you're just not telling lies? [15:12] because yesterday i am on xubuntu, you see, im just switching arround to see if i get the problem solved, [15:12] right... [15:12] its not like im telling lies. [15:13] Voyajer: well i think it is either a kernel problem or "laptop-mode". If the cpu really doesnt change the freq [15:13] sure, i have no way to confirm that. just in case you are... i'm watching you. [15:13] (and sorry if you aren't, but you probably understand there's no way we can confirm anybody is using this or that) [15:14] i know, and i understand you worry about this matter, but believe me, im really sad for this, because i already tested so many distros and all of then the problem is the same. let me tell you what i already tested. [15:15] ubuntu, lubuntu, xubuntu, voyager, [15:15] Voyajer, for what it's worth, it looks like it's a hardware, not software problem. [15:15] i am no pro so i think if i change arround maybe some one work good [15:15] Voyajer, search for your CPU and see if it's *supposed* to work on linux [15:16] i doubt changing helps (especially if you are running around ubuntu-based systems), but you are of course free to try, [15:16] Knome ill do that , and Baizon, ty for you sugestion too :), as far as i ready is something related with kernel. [15:17] and dont take me wrong because i was changing arround between distros, im sure you understand my frustration [15:18] sure, good luck [15:21] ty [15:32] Hi everyone [15:34] So I had a friend that installed xubuntu on my laptop with an encrypted hard drive, but I've come to realize that all that's doing is making everything slower, and I don't really need an encrypted hd. I have the passwords and all, but what I lack is the know how [16:25] Hi. Is Fn+F7 broke in latest xubuntu? It stopped working on my laptop after last update. :( [16:25] doubt that has more to do with your hardware/drivers than xubuntu itself [16:27] Yeah, but it was working fine before. Only after update it stopped. drivers are controlled by linux kernel. not me. [16:27] give us some details and maybe we are able to help; what is your hardware and what is fn+f7 supposed to do? [16:29] ok. thank you. I am on a Sony VAIO laptop. Before Fn+F7 popped up a small dialog to share my desktop (clone or expand) to external monitor (HDMI). Now, nothing appears. [16:29] It worked fine for past 3 or 4 xubuntu updates. [16:29] also, what's "latest xubuntu"? are you referring to 13.10 or the development release? [16:30] 13.10 non-developmental [16:30] Linux nebula 3.8.0-35-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 3 01:24:59 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [16:31] 3.8 ist not the kernel on 13.10 [16:31] Hello everyone! Good afternoon! [16:31] Paulo, hullo [16:32] sorry. its 13.04 [16:33] perhaps a dist upgrade to 13.10 will help me. I will try that. [16:33] hey Paulo. That's a portuguese name [16:33] yes it is :) [16:33] i came by here to see if i could find a dev, just to thank you guys for you awesome work [16:34] this is the first linux ever to satisfy 120% of my needs, and to actualy work flawless :D [16:34] well, you can do it here. I'm pretty sure that they'll get your message [16:35] so, are you Portuguese, or Brazilian, Paulo? [16:35] Decided to jump on the Alpha train today on one of my machines at home, let's see how it goes :) [16:35] 12.04 has been working like a charm :D [16:35] Portugal here ! [16:35] so am I [16:36] need any PT-PT assistance or just curious? [16:36] oh haha, cuincidence! [16:36] no, I don't. But thanks for the offer [16:36] :) [16:36] !offtopic | slickymaster, you should know this better [16:36] slickymaster, you should know this better: #xubuntu is the Xubuntu support channel, #xubuntu-devel for discussion regarding development of Xubuntu, and #xubuntu-offtopic is for random chatter. Welcome! [16:36] * slickymaster hides [16:36] yes you're right. My bad [16:37] Paulo, thanks, much appreciated. :) [16:37] Paulo, if you just want to chat there''s the #xubuntu-offtopic channel [16:38] i'll open that one too then :D [16:39] can i ask just a few xubuntu-related questions here to some of the expert guys? I'm curious about some things, but there doesn't seem to be a good awnser about any of these :< [16:39] Paulo, please do [16:40] Ok, let's see. First of all, sorry if i sound confusing, i do not know very well yet the technical terms, and how every package is called. [16:40] I've noticed that Xubuntu brings it's own Composer [16:41] however, for some reason i can't ever make that one work with vSync on AMD or Nvidia GPU's. Compton however works like a charm! is there a reason compton isn't the default one instead? [16:41] or am i just being plain idiout not knowing how to get the default one to work? [16:42] Paulo, xubuntu uses the xfce compositor by default [16:42] which does a lot of weird shit [16:43] default one doesn't currently support vsync, compton probably isn't default because default works with OSS drivers and default package set shouldn't be too big [16:43] kRush, please watch the language - and especially, the attitude [16:43] actually thanks for the compton tip, I have pretty bad tearing with nvidia [16:44] Sysi: try this topic here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2144468 [16:44] knome, don't read too much into it [16:44] it'll get 100% tear free [16:44] and get's super cool! [16:44] my laptop under windows, even after fresh install was painfully slow [16:45] couldn't even run 1080p videos, and barely 720p videos on youtube [16:45] now with Xubuntu the computer just flys :) [16:45] will have to try that some time [16:46] kRush, i will. by using the channel you are accepting the channel terms of service. [16:47] ok, so am I allowed to call it poop then? [16:47] i had another question but now i forgot :< [16:47] or is that over the line, too? [16:48] kthe #xubuntu-offtopic channel is a place you can chat` [16:48] kRush: ^ [17:04] How do I download Xubuntu to a external hard drive? [17:06] xubuntu278: download? or install?.. download is simply downloading to that location, or moving after the download [17:06] I suppose both. I removed my main hard drive from another computer and plan on using only external. [17:07] I am having trouble though, downloading the Xubuntu to my external hard drive. [17:11] xubuntu278: downloading works like downloading anything.. if you have capable internet, you download the iso file [17:11] xubuntu278: lets keep these steps seperate, since it seems we are having issues describing the 2 distinct steps [17:12] Do I have to burn the ido to a DVD? [17:12] iso* [17:15] Also, when I try to open the file, it says windows has to search for a program to open the torrent with. [17:15] Should I save the file, or open it? [17:19] xubuntu278: thats another step [17:19] xubuntu278: try downloading the iso, not the torrent [17:19] From a mirror? [17:20] xubuntu278: from literally where ever you can get the official iso [17:20] http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/13.10/release/ for example [17:20] xubuntu278: the PC intel image is likely what you want/need [17:21] xubuntu278: you download that, then, the installation is a seperate step.. putting the iso on the USB drive is not installing anything [17:21] !install | xubuntu278 [17:21] xubuntu278: Ubuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - See also !automate [17:27] hi, just installed xubuntu, why is the Ubuntu Software Center showing times in 12h format while my locale is set to Dutch time format(which should be 24h)? [17:27] the clock shows it correctly, as does pidgin [17:28] Does the xubuntu download usually take 4 hours? [17:28] it didn't for me [17:29] I dont want it on my main computer either. I just want it on my external hard drive. Can somebody help me? [17:29] xubuntu278: depends on your internet speed [17:30] xubuntu278: you need to download it in order to install it to any drive.. again, you are mixing up the steps.. you must *first* download [17:30] xubuntu278: after the downloading is finished you can address "i just want it on my external hard drive"... otherwise, you dont have it yet to put it on the drive [17:31] Okay, well if I bypass my router and put my internet directly in my computer, will my speed increase? [17:31] xubuntu278: you can try cancelling the download and clicking on it again, and maybe getting a faster mirror.. but, if your download speed is the issue, then, that will be the fastest [17:31] xubuntu278: i dont know your network, friend [17:32] I just didn't know if it would generally increase the speed. [17:32] Seeming as how the router if putting out wifi. [17:32] xubuntu278: it depends.. it wont make the internet speed to your house any faster [17:33] xubuntu278: then, wiring up to the router will make the speed (likely) faster, depending on the router and networking equipment.. though, it wont make your internet any faster [17:33] Right, but I was curious as to if it would channel more internet capability to my computer. [17:33] xubuntu278: it depends, friend [17:34] xubuntu278: is the wifi capable of faster speeds than the wired network from your router? is the network speed to your house able to saturate either one? [17:36] I believe the wired speed from my router to my computer is faster, but honestly I'm not sure. [17:36] I only browse web pages. [17:37] xubuntu278: the, i suggest relaxing and waiting on the download.. otherwise, you can waste time troubleshooting and learning facts that you need to address the concern you are having, and for what you are saying is literally just a concern in this one case [17:37] I'm going to try it real quick. Will let you know. [17:37] Thanks for your help by the way. === GTB3NW_AWAY is now known as GTB3NW [18:17] so why is ubuntu software center using its own time format? [18:18] no idea, have you filed a bug report? [18:19] no [18:19] where can I? [18:21] Probably with: ubuntu-bug software-center [19:02] hi [19:03] does xubuntu (xfce) have support for rightoleft languages layoutwise? [19:03] I mean the language of whole OS [19:03] not keyboard layout [19:04] peyam: i would just try the language you are looking for, and see... im sure language support for most everything is based on contributors and resources [19:04] I would love to do that.. but I need to know more [19:06] There was something about making Unity right to left by sqitching the pnale place to the right etc. would be intressting to see if they do the same with xfce [19:07] peyam: im suggesting that seeing the language in action frist hand would help you know more, otherwise, state the language you are interested in,and we'll see if a volunteer has anything to add [19:08] you shouldnt have to switch any panels (assuming that what "pnale" is) to support languages [19:10] My point wast that in main menu items are left to right. and it should be right to left . otherywise all RTL languages are supported [19:11] peyam: when space is limited, things scroll, or deal with the issue.. those may be backwards, but, this is all open, and available to be addressed on many levels [19:11] okej [19:12] peyam: is it already working and addressed? lets find out by sharing what language support you are specifically interested in, or you can try if for yourself first-hand by trying to implement it on a live CD, or in VM, or in a test user, or install [19:17] yes. Actually I would love to give it a try! so I will start working on it in weekedn [19:17] peyam: let me try a more direct approach.. what language are you specifically interested in? [19:17] Kurdish [19:17] Sorani [19:18] Sorani = Persian letters [19:20] I really look forward to xubuntu 14.04 [19:20] very much.. [19:22] http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/local-language is usually a good start, but it seems the kurdish team is not active [19:24] no linux is not so popular there like anyother ME countries [19:25] peyam: "popular" doesnt matter.. only needs support for the language.. one user could be providing that [19:25] that's true === cub_ is now known as cub [20:05] so I am having trouble getting my RAT 5 mouse to work correctly, all the web pages I can find on the subject say to edit my xorg.conf but when I open etc/X11 there is no xorg.conf file there, how do I fix this so that I can remap the mouse key that is causing the issues? [20:05] johhar: you can put one there, if you want [20:09] they all want me to put this in ( http://paste.ubuntu.com/6833997/ ), but with no xorg.conf I have no idea where to put it [20:13] Create it. [20:15] and how do I go about doing that? sorry it has been several years since I last messed with linux but I really want to change over to linux as much as possible [20:17] oh hold on might have found what I was looking for, it was not in etc/X11 but I did find it in usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d [20:38] grrr found it but it won't let me save it to that folder, and I don't see a "open as admin" right click option like I used to see === bazhang_ is now known as bazhang === azeam_afk is now known as azeam [22:11] I have set up xfce just the way I like it on top of Ubuntu 12.04. Now I have ordered an ssd and want to install Xubuntu 12.04 lts. Is there a way to transfer my UI set up to the new installation? Thanks! [22:14] pandragon: you can clone the install, you can backup the data and move it... [22:15] holstein, I want to start with just the xubuntu core and just move my UI. [22:16] pandragon: you would clone the os, that would move the os.. everything.. the ui and the entire os.. or, you can install what you like, which would be the ui, and move your settings [22:16] pandragon: you wont move the UI over.. you will move your settings for it.. those are in the users /home [22:17] you can sync the settings like that in ubuntuone [22:19] Ok, the settings. Should I just copy the home into the home of the new installation? [22:20] pandragon: there not really a "should".. just what will do what you want it to do.. for example, there should be a .mozilla folder hidded in your users /home.. if you take that with you to another install, the firefox will load with the settings you have [22:20] OK, got it . Thanks a bunch! [22:20] pandragon: there are many .hidded directoris, hidded with a dot in front of them.. ~/.config for example... thats where the settings you reference wanting to sync are [22:21] how you do that is up to you.. ubuntuone has a way to do that with an account online. you can copy them onto the media of your choice.. you will them be able to put them back into the new users /home on another installation [22:22] *or*, you can clone the entire install, and just move it over to the new drive.. http://clonezilla.org/ is what i use for that, though, there are many tools [22:23] Right, if my current drive holds out, I can sort through the config files as I need them for the new set up. I want the new set up to be as clean as practical. [22:24] all of that will be up to you.. what do i do? i just backup my data.. physical files that i want. i personally consider "getting the desktop just the way i want" to be part of the experience, and am personally never interested in saving that process [22:26] I really appreciate you help. === azeam_afk is now known as azeam === GTB3NW is now known as GTB3NW_AWAY
