apb1963How can I downgrade qt 4.8.2 to qt 4.8.1 ?07:27
jackyalcineapb1963: you familiar with aptitude?08:39
jackyalcineif not, look into Muon Pacakge Manager08:39
jackyalcineit has the ability to downgrade packages08:39
apb1963jackyalcine: I use apt... and I also use Muon08:39
jackyalcineThat has a high chance of breaking your system though08:40
apb1963apt-get08:40
jackyalcineI'd say look into Muon08:40
apb1963jackyalcine: yeah.... I know :(  And I can't afford to do that.08:40
jackyalcinebecause this is kind of tricky in the CLI08:40
jackyalcineCLI = command line interface08:40
apb1963jackyalcine: Right now I'm looking for a way to determine what packages depend on libqtcore4 4.8.208:41
Shikieiki_anyone here know how risky it is to upgrade {k,}ubuntu through two versions (13.10 and 14.04) without rebooting08:41
Shikieiki_?08:41
jackyalcinethat's configuration-dependent off-the-bat Shikieiki_08:43
jackyalcinegoing from 13.04 to 13.10 shouldn't be too bad08:43
Shikieiki_what do you mean jackyalcine?08:43
jackyalcinebut to 14.04 would be rocky.08:43
apb1963krashecd08:43
apb1963krashed08:43
jackyalcineShikieiki_: in a vanilla set-up, it'd be easier08:43
Shikieiki_rocky because of the lack of rebooting?  or rocky in general?  because iirc i've never re-installed since 10.10 or w/e08:43
Shikieiki_what do you mean a vanilla setup, like, a clean intall, or just no exotic configurations?08:44
jackyalcineShikieiki_: but with more installed packages, the chances of broken deps rise (ever so slightly)08:44
jackyalcineShikieiki_: like right off the ISO :)08:44
jackyalcineShikieiki_: rebooting will be required; your kernel version will change.08:44
Shikieiki_i've upgraded my kernel for >100 days without needing to reboot08:45
Shikieiki_but idk if there's anything which absolutely will refuse to work unless being restarted (like the upstart or whatever kubuntu's init is called)08:45
jackyalcineYou can have multiple kernels installed at one time.08:46
jackyalcineBut only one can be used.08:46
Shikieiki_i know08:46

Shikieiki_*near future08:48
Shikieiki_*upgrading twice08:48
jackyalcineI went from 13.04 to 13.10 only rebooting to use the newer kernel08:48
Shikieiki_if my buntu is at eol, no more security updates will roll out for it specifically, which is not good08:49
jackyalcineRight.08:49
Shikieiki_but i shouldn't have any issues if i do-release-upgrade twice in a row and stay up for ~200 more days?  i'm trying to get an uptime record (personal record), to squeeze the last out of kubuntu before i try and switch to a new distro08:50
jackyalcineThat I don't know08:51
jackyalcineI'm going to hope that you wouldn't have to08:51
jackyalcineShikieiki_: I leave uptime records for servers :P08:51

Shikieiki_heh, that's exactly why i'm doing this, because huge uptime on a regularly used desktop (or laptop) is a lot more fun than some server which will already stay up for years08:52
jackyalcineapb1963: but I'm running saucy with the -proposed and -beta PPAs08:52

jackyalcineapb1963: ah, my bad. lemme look08:53
jackyalcineapb1963: what version of Kubuntu are you using?08:53
apb1963jackyalcine: What  I really need at this point is a way to find packages that are dependent on 4.8.208:53
apb196312.04, but since kubuntu is a distribution and I'm running kubuntu-desktop on ubuntu 12.04 I really don't know the right answer.08:54

Aniarwell, I'll start here... briefly: I've been a KDE user since 2007 or so on Debian. Recently live-upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 with do-release-upgrade. No errors reported during upgrade. When I rebooted, though, lightdm is starting, but not starting my xsession.  I can log in on console and "startx" successfully, but I can't log in from lightdm16:49
AniarThere's no errors in my /var/log/xorg.*.log files (and only 1 non-font warning about not loading xmir16:49
Aniarwith no gui, research is... limited16:50
Aniarbut I'm installing lynx to google it now - wondering if anyone has any experience/thoughts/kick me to #xorg ?16:50
jjinco33Does it kick you back to login screen, blank screen or out to console?16:53
Aniarjjinco33: login screen16:53
Aniarjjinco33: and it's happening for both my account and my "no homedir normally exists" backup account.16:54
Aniarjjinco33: there's no files in /tmp owned by the backup account either (that screws up gnome all the time)16:54
jjinco33I had a similar issue after upgrade and had to remove .Xuathority file form my home directory, youc an also see if it changed to be owned by root and change it back to belong to you17:01
Aniarjjinco33: thanks, checking...17:03
Aniarjjinco33: although my backup admin had a completely empty homedir...17:03
jjinco33yeah, not sure on that one17:03
Aniarnope17:03
Aniarnothing in syslog other than acpid client connect/disconnect messages17:04
jjinco33When you can get to browser ... https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?62529-Can-t-login-after-upgrade-to-13-0417:05
jjinco33Suggested solution there was to install and use kdm instead of lightdm17:06
Aniarworth looking into, thanks.  odd - my ~/.xsession-errors only has 3 lines, one of them complaining...17:07
Aniar /usr/sbin/lightdm-session: 5: exec: init: not found17:08
Aniartoo bad there's no "lightdm"17:08
jjinco33sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm17:09
Aniarjjinco33: already did that before coming in, didn't help.  same with dpkg-reconfigure xorg17:09
Aniartrying the kdm workaround - it's 100% ok with me.17:09
Aniarthat worked just fine, thanks!17:10
jjinco33ok, the person in teh thread I linked had teh same issue and had to switch to kdm. Appears lightdm never worked for him after upgrade17:10
jjinco33Cool. Glad to hear it17:10
AniarI rebuild from scratch every 18-24 months anyways, so that'll probably happen this year, and can see where things fall out then.17:11
sdaughertyDoes kubuntu automatically start gpg-agent by default?17:11
jjinco33Aniar: I do the same and usually have problems like this solved when I do17:16
