dimpyi have some problem regarding ubuntu 10.0409:04
MartijnVdSdimpy: that's an old version! What's the problem?09:04
dimpyi am not able to connect wifi with it09:04
MartijnVdSdoes it see the network, and then not connect?09:05
dimpyactually i have installed ubuntu 10.04 in vmware workstation09:05
bashrc10.04 was a good release09:06
dimpywhenever i write ifconfig command.. always show that no interface found09:06
MartijnVdSdimpy: if you're running it in vmware, shouldn't the vmware host do the wifi connection thing, and the guest just use "normal" (virtual) ethernet?09:07
MartijnVdSdimpy: Also, 10.04 might not support latest VMWare wrt. drivers09:07
dimpyits been 3 months long i am not able to connect if you could help me09:08
bigcalmGood morning peeps :)09:08
MartijnVdSdimpy: can you put the output of "ip link show" on pastebin?09:09
dimpywhat is that? btw i am new to ubuntu09:09
JamesTaitGood morning all; happy Inane Answering Message Day! :-D09:10
DJonesJamesTait: Yeah, ok09:10
DJonesIs that inane enough?09:10
MartijnVdSInane in the Membrane09:11
dimpycan anyone help me???09:12
MartijnVdS!pastebin09:12

dimpyi have some problem with that.. paste is not waorking09:16
MartijnVdSdimpy: can you post a screenshot somewhere then? If it's a vm, that should be possible09:17
DJonesThis is an interesting solution, rather than continue to support old/unsupported version of IE7, a US website is offering to buy new computers for its users who continue to use it http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/01/30/new_computer_for_ie7/09:24
dimpyhow can i paste screenshot?09:24
DJones!imagebin | dimpy09:24

dimpyhere it goes.. http://imagebin.org/28988909:27
DJonesjussi: I was looking at one of those in PC World at the weekend, it looked nice, although the one they had on display looked a bit flimsy (may not have been the exact same model, or could have been overused)09:27
jussiDJones: yeah - 11 inch is really important for me - 13 is too large. there arent many 11 inch ultrabooks worth mentioning out there - macbook air, vaio pro 11 and this so far are the only ones that are even remotely like what Im after09:29

jussiDJones: there is a tegra3 version, but way too low power for me I think09:34
MartijnVdSdimpy: "ip link show", not just "ip"09:35
jussiMartijnVdS: yes, but that thing is yucky.09:35
dimpyip link show command is not working.. what the hell i gonna do?09:36
DJonesjussi: I had a Transformer Prime which was Tegra3, as a tablet it was good and fairly fast, although running android, even so it was considerably slower than my N7 now09:37
directhexlaptops are terrible /o\09:37
jussiDJones: mind, the screen resolution is poor on that lenovo - I wonder if they have a better version09:37
jussiDJones: Im not sure I can cope with yet another 1366x768..09:38
MartijnVdSjussi: is it? I love mine :)09:38
DJonesjussi: Well, if you really want a small screen, I've got a couple of HP Journada's in a box in the loft, screen smaller than a mobile phone, and a speedy as a tortoise09:39
jussiDJones: :D09:40

dimpyhere it is..09:44

dimpyproblem with ubuntu?09:46
dimpyanyone's there ?09:46
SuperMattthat's quite a fun issue you have there09:47
directhex?09:47
SuperMattalso: that's quite an old version of ubuntu you have there09:47
SuperMattI'm not sure it's even supported09:47
dimpywhat i am gonna do then?09:48
directhexwhat's the problem?09:49
directhexoh, right, 10.0409:49
directhexhow old's the laptop?09:49
directhexwait wait hang on... vmware?09:50
directhexvmware doesn't emulate wifi09:50
directhexit emulates a wired network card which runs through your default host network adapter. if your wifi works on your host, it'll show up as wired in the vmware image09:50
dimpylol..the laptop is not old09:50
DJonesdimpy: Is there a specific reason you've not updated to at least 12.04, just for information, 10.04 stopped being supported and updated for desktops in May 201309:50
dimpyyep09:50
SuperMattwow, I guess that version is still supported in the server09:51
monotokoI was running some 8.04 servers until last year09:51
directhexdimpy, i'm failing to understand what your actual problem is09:51
DJonesSuperMatt: yep still got another 12 +bit months for that09:52
dimpyactually i have just install ubuntu 10.04 in vmware workstation not in my lappy.. and i want wifi connection in my ubuntu which i find impossible09:53
SuperMatttry a more modern release...09:54
directhexdimpy, vmware doesn't do that.09:54
directhexdimpy, when you configured your VM, you will have told it to use NAT since it's the default. vmware emulates a wired network card (a vmnet adapter). it doesn't matter whether your host PC is connected via wired, wireless, fibre, whatever - the VM only sees its own wired connection, which will work as long as your host OS has a network connection of some kind09:55
dimpyyaar what i am gonna do then?09:58
MartijnVdSdimpy: That depends, what do you want to do?09:58
MartijnVdS!xy09:58
lubotu3The XY problem is when you need to do X, and you think you can use Y to do X, so you ask about how to do Y, when what you really should do is state what your X problem is. There may be a Z solution that is even better than Y, but nobody can suggest it if X is never mentioned.09:58
dimpyactually its my final year project..09:59
dimpyvmware cant configured wireless?09:59
directhexdimpy, no, it can't.10:00
dimpythanks for helping anyway10:00
directhexdimpy, how is an emulated wireless card supposed to know which real physical wireless networks exist?10:00
dimpyyea.. you're right10:01
dimpyso you suggest as i have to do in vmware only10:01
SuperMattdimpy: what *is* your final year project10:01
dimpyor else i have to do partitioning10:01
dimpysimultation environment10:02
dimpyusing ns210:02
directhexnatural selection 2 the game?10:03
MartijnVdSnameserver 2?10:03
dimpyno not natural selection its network simulator10:03
Laneyoof, snow is picking up10:04
bigcalmSnow has left us now10:08
MartijnVdSwe haven't had any yet \o/10:08
dimpyare you guys all Ubuntu experts?10:09
bigcalmNo, we just like using Ubuntu :)10:10
bigcalmSome people have more experience than others10:10
MartijnVdSsome people know a lot though10:11
bigcalmSome people call me the space cowboy10:11
dimpyokay, i find ubuntu tough to work with10:11
MartijnVdSdimpy: what do you find tough about it?10:11
dimpyhow to use it.. as i am stuck with this netwroking problem :(10:12
MartijnVdSdimpy: Maybe if you wrote a longer explanation of what you want to do, we can help better?10:13
dimpyhehe.. you want me to write?10:14
MartijnVdSdimpy: like what do you want to connect to what? What do you want to do with it? etc.10:14
dimpylikewise how to connect to internet in it...also what is this atheros driver?10:15
directhexis he dim? @_@10:23
MartijnVdSdirecthex: I think "virtualization" might be a hard concept10:24
MartijnVdSdirecthex: That VMs only see the virtual "hardware", not the real hardware of the machine they run on10:24
foobarrynothing more frustrating that following an incomplete build doc10:25
foobarrysuddenly trail goes cold and you're left trying to fathom what the heck is happening10:25
dimpycan i do with bridged networking :)10:26
MartijnVdSdimpy: that's probably not supported with wifi, because of how the protocol works10:26
directhexyou can bridge onto a wireless adapter, but it'll still behave as a wired adapter, and rely on the host to be associated with an SSID10:28
directhexiirc10:28
dimpybig deal.. connect toh ho jaega10:28
MartijnVdSdirecthex: won't work, multiple mac addresses on a wifi client would require multiple sessions to the AP10:29
MartijnVdSor "4-address mode", aka WDS10:29
dimpywhat is WDS?10:31
MartijnVdSdimpy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_distribution_system10:31
MartijnVdSdimpy: not supported on most "normal" clients though, especially in Windows.10:31
MartijnVdSdimpy: also, the access point needs to be set up right10:32
MartijnVdSdimpy: if both the AP and the client are atheros, and run Linux, it's possible to set it up on the *host* (the guest still won't see wifi)10:32
dimpysee i have to simulate ns2 in ubuntu..how can i do that?10:33
directhexon real tin?10:35
directhexdoes ns2 *really* require a wireless network card, not wired?10:35
dimpynot like that but i can have only wireless available to me10:36
MartijnVdSif it's a network *simulator*, why would it require network at all?10:37
dimpyactually i need to create a virtual environment10:37
MartijnVdSso you create a bunch of VMs, and configure their (virtual) network devices in vmware, then set up IPs/vlans/etc. inside the VMs, done?10:38
dimpyare you making my problem more easier or more tougher?10:39
MartijnVdSeasier, I think?10:41
dimpyarghhh..frustrated with my project10:44
MartijnVdSdimpy: My only suggestion is to divide your problem into smaller steps10:45
MartijnVdSdimpy: then take the smaller step, and then the next, etc.10:46
dimpyare you a student?10:46
MartijnVdSdimpy: If the problem is still hard, divide it into steps again, and do those separately10:46
MartijnVdSdimpy: I was one once10:46
dimpyso.. should i install ubuntu directly into my lappy?10:47
MartijnVdSdimpy: that depends on what you want to do (which we still don't have a clear idea of..)10:47
directhexthere is a third way10:47
directhexyou can pass real USB devices through to your emulated OS10:48
directhexso you could buy a linux-compatible USB wifi stick, and pass that through to emulated ubuntu10:48
dimpythanks i'l try10:50
shaunowildly off-topic but I gotta ask; any suggestions for http proxy software which will authenticate users against a windows domain?  (pref. free since it's going to last 2-3 hours in a lab)11:05
MartijnVdSshauno: apache should be able to do that11:10
diploSquid? I set my squid at the last place to auth via Windows AD11:11
MartijnVdSshauno: http://blog.karssen.org/2010/03/03/using-windows-ad-for-apache-authentication/ ?11:11
shaunohm didn't know squid will do that;  I'll probably stick to that then, since they'll be my go-to for other auth methods too11:12
MartijnVdSshauno: apache's mod_proxy is easy if you know apache configs though11:13
shaunoI suspect I've bitten off more than I can chew11:25
