trixhi. when i type "sudo apt-get upgrade" in the console there are 3 packets that are kept back15:25
trixlinux-generic, linux-hearder-generic and linux-image-generic15:25
trixwhy is that so?15:25
wxltrix: it means the dependencies have changed since15:29
wxltrix: you need to dist-upgrade to fix it15:29
wxltrix: more specifically it means the dependencies now include something they didn't previously15:30
wxltrix: upgrade never adds new packages that you have not explicitly requested15:30

sasha|O hai. I'm still having issues with booting (can't log into my account), so I tried to do a fsck check, and then it stopped with the following: i.imgur.com/MZQN1vf.jpg19:48
sasha|This is in recovery mode. I have a feeling this may have something to do with a damaged hard drive?19:48
sasha|When I boot normally, a terminal flashes briefly with irrelevant (collectd database error) message, and then goes back to the login screen19:49
wxlsasha|: go back into recovery and see what /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg have to say19:50
sasha|well I can't seem to upload it to sprunge because I can't load the network...19:56
sasha|which part are you looking for in particular wxl ?19:56
=== pcwhite is now known as PaulW2U
sasha|wxl, I copied dmesg and syslog to a USB stick and uploaded them to pastebin: http://pastebin.com/WZRU52xQ (dmesg)20:12

wxlnothing obvious there, sasha| ; try X.org.log21:20
sasha|1sec21:20
sasha|it has done i.imgur.com/MZQN1vf.jpg again whilst idling in tty since I last spoke here wxl21:21
wxlcorrect me if i'm wrong but you can get to the login screen in general without troubles, right, sasha| ?21:23
sasha|yeah21:23
wxlthen i'm guessing the problem is with X21:23
sasha|however if I recall correctly, normally there shouldn't be a login screen, it should boot directly21:23
wxlassuming this is not a live system (it doesn't appear to be), it shouldn't boot directly unless you've set it up that way21:24
sasha|afaik I set it up that way, it acts as a home server21:25
wxleven still, probably an X problem; send the log file over, sasha|21:32
sasha|yeah hold on a sec I can't get it to boot :P21:32
jiridoSorry i ask so abrupt but I would need to know how i get the actual screen resolution when in console21:36
jiridoIf some one are in a mood!21:36

ubottuInformation about using and setting your computer's clock on Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuTime - See https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/C/NTP.html for information on usage of the Network Time Protocol (NTP)21:59
wxlsasha|: give me the 0.log21:59
wxl!timezone21:59
wxl!locale21:59
ubottuTo set up and configure your locales, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LocaleConf and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Locale/21:59
sasha|wxl, http://sprunge.us/eTZS21:59
wxltry that, acidfu ↑21:59
acidfuI finally did that : sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata22:00
acidfu:/22:00
Unit193`tzselect`22:00
wxlsasha|: try booting with acpi=off and see if that helps22:01
sasha|man... I just got it to work for the stuff I want22:02
sasha|but where do I set it to acpi=off?22:02
wxlsasha|: in the grub settings22:04
wxl!grub | sasha|22:04
ubottusasha|: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub222:04
sasha|so basically I add it as a line to /boot/grub/grub.cfg ?22:05
wxlsasha|: no you can edit it when you boot at the main screen22:07
wxlhold down shift when you boot22:07
wxlsorry if i'm kind of distracted; work :(22:07
