[17:07] i.e if you had nvidia - the nvidia-settings WOULD work. [17:07] ok...i dont have nvidia [17:07] I have a samsung netbook and the built in brightness settings do not work - until I install a driver.... [17:09] it is your h/w possibly [17:09] https://launchpad.net/~voria/+archive/ppa [17:09] I had to use the ppa [17:09] (on my crappy samsung netbook) [17:11] you'll likely have more luck with newer versions of kubuntu/ubuntu/whatever also. [17:42] SeanFromQueens: are you looking for samba shares? [17:43] I guess so, I was really hoping to just see resources connected to my network [17:43] SeanFromQueens: open dolphin [17:44] I don't recall if I've ever bothered to get browsing to work, but you can go to the location at smb://user@ip.address/resource [17:44] click - network in the left menu [17:44] then > samba shares === AntiSpamMeta_ is now known as AntiSpamMeta [17:45] yossarianuk: the samba shares green plus sign turns to red minus sign [17:52] hateball: typing the smb and the IP address jumped over whatever the barrier was, and now I can navigate around [17:52] hateball: thank you very much [17:52] SeanFromQueens: no worries, as I said I never bothered getting browsing working... :p [17:55] One more question, when downloading a file from firefox, why isn't network and (very recently) created places available to 'save to'? What can I do, to debug a USB device that is not recognized? Suddendly, my Android device doesn't show up as a device when connected. The hardware connection seems to work, as the "charging"-light on the device turns on, when I plug in the device. lsusb doesn't show any entry that I would identify as my device (Samsung Galaxy S3, i9300). [19:51] I don't know about any update that might be related. But honestly I didn't check as I don't know enough to know more after reading through the list of updated packages. [19:58] fkm, try this to see if your phone shows up, sudo lshw -C network [20:00] BluesKaj: Thank you for the tip! Unfortunately, it didn't work :-( [20:01] What I see though (through lsusb on the computer and the phone) is the USB-hub via which the device is connected. But not the device itself and I always used the USB-hub until now. I even tried to connect it directly to no avail. [20:02] lsusb output: http://pastebin.com/thpavpTL (1d6b is the hub). [20:05] fkm, did you try the lshw command after the direct connection? [20:08] BluesKaj: Nope. I will do that now. [20:12] Still nothing [20:14] I'll test it with another computer. My netbook must be lying around somewhere. [20:18] can't the phone connect by wifi? [20:21] BluesKaj: Yes, it could in theory. But I would like to push some code to the device using ADB. [20:22] And I guess the problem lies with Android / the device. The netbook doesn't recognize it either and I didn't do any updates there in the past week. [20:22] Thank you BluesKaj for your advice! :-) [20:24] ADB? [20:24] "Android Debug Bridge" [20:25] A cli tool to control your Android device (or push/pull data to/from it) [20:25] fkm, my duaghter's LG phone connected without any probs here, but don't think she was pushing any code:) [20:26] Well. The worst part about my problem is, that last time I tried (about a week ago), everything worked like a charm. [20:27] So I guessed that maybe a Kubuntu update made some changes as I didn't do any OS upgrades on the phone. But seems like there was a change on the phone after all :-) [20:27] I'll try another cable and then call it a night :-D [20:28] O. M. G. [20:28] It actually was the cable -.- [20:28] oops :) [20:29] Lesson learned: Don't leave your USB cables in the car for a week ;-) [20:29] ok, I'll make a note of that === cristian is now known as cristian__ === cristian__ is now known as cristian === underdog is now known as Guest83813 [21:32] Hmm, I'm not having very good luck with OpenVPN on 13.10 on the new laptop I got. [22:44] keithzg to add custom dns? [22:44] my understanding is that /etc/resolv.conf is constantly overwritten by resolvconf now [22:45] and I've seen a solution where you add "prepend domain-name-servers 10.1.2.3;" to /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf [22:45] modify /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base to add custom stuff [22:47] mine's empty [22:47] it usually is [22:47] but you can treat it like we used to treat resolv.conf? [22:47] nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx [22:48] /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base gets added (as if by cat) after any dynamic stuff from dhcp [22:49] yep, just add your nameserver lines to it, or /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail [22:49] well I wasn't the one with the question but I learned something! [22:49] thanks [22:49] /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail gets added only after some interface is configured, /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base gets added always [23:10] keithzg: You can also do something like add into the /etc/network/interfaces file a post-up directive for the interface, like: post-up echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" >> /etc/resolv.conf [23:11] genii, tsimpson: Thanks! I'll definitely keep all that in mind. In my case though it just turned out I needed to add the /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf script to my client's VPN .ovpn.
