AussieDownUnderAbout to install 14.04 xubuntu alpha 201:50
AussieDownUndernikolam recommended I install & help test it then report. Was wondering how would I report about my use of xubuntu 14.04? I'm assuming there's some thing already in it for doing that?01:51
Unit193You'd normally report to the QA tracker, though the testing for A2 is done, you'd likely test a daily.01:52
starratsUnit isn't there a launchpad for it?01:53

KekaiI am a returning Xubuntu user and I have some questions02:32
KekaiI run Ubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo Netbook with 200GB of memory and 512mb of ram. I installed XCFE through the terminal02:33
holsteinsudo apt-get install xfce4 ? or "xubuntu-desktop" ?02:34
KekaiSudo aptget install XCFE402:34
KekaiI want to become an Xubuntu user.02:34
holsteinok.. its free today ;) enjoy it!02:35
Kekaibut I want to know if this is an official way or do I have to reinstall my OS.02:35
Kekaiisn't it always free?02:35
Kekai:302:35
holsteinKekai: xubuntu *is* ubuntu..02:35
Kekaiim looking for lighter OS02:36
holsteinyou never "have to" do anything02:36
holsteinif you want to insatll stock xubuntu, youcan. but it uses the same repositories (osftware sources) you are using now02:36
KekaiI was gonna get rid of unity anways02:36
holsteinxubuntu *is* ubuntu with the xfce desktop environment.. you can install xubuntu-desktop if you like, and have the complete look/feel, but there really is no reason to get rid of anything02:37
Kekaijust I didnt know if I should wipe my HDD02:37
Kekaiits because Ubuntu is beig a ram hog02:37
holsteincould be 3d related.. unity is not in xfce or xubuntu02:38
KekaiI kno02:43
KekaiI dont want unity02:43
KekaiI want XCFE02:43
holsteinKekai: then, enjoy it, since you have it installed.. you can select xfce from login02:43
KekaiBBL02:44
KekaiMy wifi indicator is alway showing reconnecting03:11
KekaiIt started this after I started up Xubuntu03:12
holsteinKekai: you installed xubuntu?03:12
holsteinKekai: i thought you just isntalled xfce4?03:12
KekaiI installed the Xubuntu desktop03:12
holsteinKekai: so, back when you had only installed xfce4, everything was fine.. you install "xubuntu-desktop" and now you are not connecting to wifi?03:17
xubuntu538hi, I know there are other places for reporting bugs and thats stuff03:31
xubuntu538But im having trobule with all the newest linux distros on my pc03:31
xubuntu538including xubuntu03:31
holstein!bug | xubuntu538 is where/how to report03:31

xubuntu538suddenly im gettin a screen with horizontal bars03:32
xubuntu538and is freezes03:32
xubuntu538and it freezes****03:32
holsteinxubuntu538: what grahpics hardware? have you tried the vesa driver?03:32
xubuntu538they are nvidia i dont remember the model03:33
xubuntu538the ones integrated in the mobo03:33
holsteinthey?03:33
holsteinxubuntu538: did the machines come with linux? or windows?03:33
xubuntu538im sorry Im not in my best english momment03:34
holsteinxubuntu538: you will need the graphics card information, since you are responsible for providing the linux support for the machines03:34
holstein!nvidia | xubuntu538 is what i referece03:34
ubottuxubuntu538 is what i referece: For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto03:34
holsteinxubuntu538: i can get you to a channel in your native language if you like03:34
xubuntu538Do you think the trouble im having is because of the graphics hardware?03:35
holsteinxubuntu538: yes03:35
xubuntu538Is it a common trouble? You know having this "freezing" with the horizontal bars03:36
holsteinxubuntu538: no03:36
holsteinxubuntu538: its not "common" per se03:36
holsteinxubuntu538: what graphics drivers have you tried?03:37
xubuntu538I though so, because when i google it i didnt find anything03:37
holsteinxubuntu538: you are likely searching incorrectly03:37
xubuntu538just some guy with the same screen when he used firefox03:37
xubuntu538wel maybe, i know the comuunity is large03:37
holsteinxubuntu538: you will try the proprietary driver03:38
holstein!nvidia | xubuntu538 will tell you how03:38
ubottuxubuntu538 will tell you how: For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto03:38
xubuntu538and im not a programmer or an it guy, but Im been using linux ( ubuntu) since 200903:38
xubuntu538and this is the first time i dont find a solution03:39
holsteinxubuntu538: have you tried the proprietary driver?03:39
xubuntu538no i dont03:39
xubuntu538I saw the option it gives me to use that kind of drivers03:40
holsteinxubuntu538: thats is what you should try to solve your issue03:41
AussieDownUnderJust installed 14.04 alpha 203:41
xubuntu538i just downloaded the open suse 13.1 and it gives me the same screen03:41
xubuntu538well downloaded and installed03:41
holsteinxubuntu538: with *any* linux, you will need the driver to suport your hardware03:41
holsteinxubuntu538: it is not allowed to be released by default03:41
AussieDownUnderGo to the additional drivers sections in settings manger & try one of the drivers. Restart when you change it.03:42
holsteinxubuntu538: you will add it after installing03:42
xubuntu538yeah thanks im going to try that03:42
xubuntu538because i know is not something wrong with the hardware because  the ubuntu 10.10 works fine03:42
holsteinxubuntu538: 10.10 doesnt require 3d.. gnome3 requires 3d.. as does unity03:43
xubuntu538but xubuntu doesnt need 3d03:43
xubuntu538isnt it?03:43
AussieDownUnderWhy are you on 10.10?03:43
holsteinxubuntu538: please try the proprietary driver03:44
xubuntu538nono im not in 1010 , I installed 10.10 to try the hardware03:44
xubuntu538yes, i will, right now im finishing the installation ob the latest cubuntu03:44
xubuntu538xubuntu***03:44
AussieDownUnderOkay, any reason you picked 10.10 over the higher releases? You are referring to Xubuntu version 10.10 and not driver version right?03:45
xubuntu538I picked that because it is the last linux distro that i ever installed on this pc03:45
xubuntu538then i installed windows and now I wanted to return to linux03:46
holsteinxubuntu538: you have 13.10?03:46
xubuntu538yes i do03:46
AussieDownUnder12.04 lts perhaps maybe a better choice. 14.04 comes out April I believe. Is this an old machine you're running & what's the graphics card again?03:46
xubuntu538is not too old03:47
xubuntu538it is from 200903:47
xubuntu538it has an amd phenom with 8 cores03:47
xubuntu538sorry 4**03:47
AussieDownUnderSaid graphics not cpu03:48
xubuntu538i know i told you about the cpu to let you estimate the age of my pc03:48
xubuntu538And i dont know the model i just know it is nvidia03:49
AussieDownUnderWouldn't think nvidia would have many problems running on ubuntu/xubuntu. Supposed to be supported well from what I heard. I'm using AMD & it's a bit rubbish03:50
holsteinxubuntu538: the link i gave shows you how to tell what grahpics hardware you have03:50
holsteinthe open drivers can be problematic..03:51
AussieDownUnderWhat is the way to see your system info in xubuntu again I forget?03:51
holsteineven the proprietary ones can be as well.. though, with steam and other commercial endevours, support seems to be steadily improving03:51
holsteini use "lspci" in the terminal..03:52
AussieDownUnder14.04 xubuntu, when you drag the windows to the top of the screen, it doesn't maximise it to the entire screen, it goes only half way vertically.03:54
holsteinAussieDownUnder: be sure to use #ubuntu+103:54
AussieDownUnder?03:55
holstein!14.0403:55

xubuntu441i guess its 60hz04:00

AussieDownUnderWhat country are you in?04:01
xubuntu441Im fron Costa Rica in Central America04:01
xubuntu441from*04:01
AussieDownUnderGet your monitor manual, see what refresh rate hz it's supposed to run at. Not sure if that's the problem but why not look at it anywa.04:02
xubuntu441ahh I know that, my monitor needs to run at 6004:03
xubuntu441but know im in the section where i can change the driver of the graphic card04:03
xubuntu441and I have 3 options04:03
xubuntu441i dont know what is the best one04:03
xubuntu441Im going to try the binary Xorg driver04:05
xubuntu039Well im going to give ita try to the privative driver04:14
xubuntu039thanks for your help04:14
AussieDownUnderWhat's the go in xubuntu 14.04 with no option in the properties of a file to run it as an executable?04:46
cfhowlett!trusty|AussieDownUnder,04:46
ubottuAussieDownUnder,: Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) will be the 20th release of Ubuntu.  See the announcement at http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1295 for more info. support in #ubuntu+104:46
AussieDownUnderIn xubuntu, where can I set all the default applications? So far it only let's you set default web browser, mail, terminal & one other thing,05:24
cfhowlettAussieDownUnder, you can set preferences for specific things like mplayer for videos, audacious for audio etc.  the only global preferences I've seen are the ones you notes.05:27
xubuntu122I have a question regarding trying to install linux on a 2002 acer laptop05:29
AussieDownUnderwhat distribution?05:29
AussieDownUnderYou going to ask your question for us all to see?05:30
xubuntu122i guess whatever works really. i tried xubuntu i think but the bios popped up during installation and told me i needed to update my firmware. i really dont want to do that so i thought if i installed a version of linux from that era then i wouldn't have to update the firmware. right???05:31
AussieDownUnderI don't think you want an old linux distribution from 200205:33
AussieDownUnderI think lubuntu is designed to run on old laptops05:33
AussieDownUnderHow much ram does that laptop have?05:33
xubuntu122AMD Sempron 448mb of RAM 1.8 GHz05:35
AussieDownUnderYep then you want the Alternate install from here. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu#Minimal_Install05:35
AussieDownUnderThe 32-bit Alternate install iso is probs for you. What pc are you on at the moment for talking on here?05:36
cfhowlettAussieDownUnder, lubuntu is optimized for older/lower tech05:36
AussieDownUndercfhowlett, is a 2002 acer laptop with less than 500mbs ram not considered old tech?05:37
cfhowlettAussieDownUnder, 2002 would be considered older tech I should say05:38
xubuntu122im on a much newer acer laptop05:38
AussieDownUndercfhowlett, Yep lol, xubuntu122 is the one asking05:38
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, Does the 2002 acer's disc drive still work?05:39
xubuntu122yes05:39
cfhowlettAussieDownUnder, ah.  right.  sorry05:39
cfhowlettxubuntu122, try lubuntu05:39
xubuntu122and just boot it from disc?05:39
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, Cause you can burn the lubuntu to a disc or use another program to make a usb installer from the iso05:40
cfhowlettxubuntu122, 2002 OS may not support USB boot05:41
xubuntu122it doesnt ive already tried05:41
cfhowlettxubuntu122, then make a bootable cd and go to town!05:41
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, And yeah if it's on disc you tell your laptop to boot off of the disc to begin the install & not the hard drive, same goes for if you put it on a usb stick (would probably be faster then a disc version)05:41
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, So you already tried booting lubuntu on a disc?05:42
xubuntu122yeah, in the bios. I'll try lubuntu and hopefully it won't tell me to update my firmware, lol.05:43
xubuntu122im on the website right now05:43
cfhowlettxubuntu122, get the 32 bit version!05:44
xubuntu122most definitly i will05:45
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, So say scenario you end up needing to update the firmware, I'm sure there's still documentation & downloads from acer somewhere for it, whether you need to update it from within the laptops o/s or there's a way to put the file on a usb I think you should just do it05:45
xubuntu122okay, ive heard its not hard. i just didnt want to mess with it05:45
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, as long as you get the right firmware/bios update for your particular laptop model it should be fine. It also might include speed improvements.05:47
xubuntu122should i choose a previous version or 13.10?05:47
cfhowlettxubuntu122, you probably will have a firmware update or 2 due.  It only hurts the first time.05:47
xubuntu122lol05:48
cfhowlettxubuntu122, well 12.04 has long term support.  13.10 is only supported for 6 months05:48
AussieDownUndercfhowlett, I read 12.04 became unsupported for lubuntu october last year.05:50
cfhowlettAussieDownUnder, ah, right.  I was thinking xubuntu.  next Lubuntu will be LTS; 14.0405:51
AussieDownUndercfhowlett, Apparently lubuntu don't offer long term support versions from what I've seen. I reckon just go 13.10 & upgrade to 14.04 if they even decide to release 14.04 for lubuntu05:51
cfhowlettxubuntu122, that said, go with 13.1005:51
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, yeah you should be in the #lubuntu channel to be honest lol05:51
xubuntu122okay, ill give it a try and make sure i choose the 32bit05:52
cfhowlettAussieDownUnder, thanks for correction05:53
xubuntu122thank you for answering my questions! im out!05:53
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, One more thing before you go, what program are you using to burn the iso to disc?05:54
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, P.S I'll linger on the #lubuntu channel in case you get stuck. I've installed a few distributions myself to probably be able to further help.05:55
xubuntu122i cant remember but i thought it was the same one they recommended on the website. burn image to disc using windows something or other05:56
cfhowlettxubuntu122, install unetbootin on whatever OS you're running and make your CD05:56
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, if you're on windows I jsut use astroburn lite to burn iso05:58
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, it's free & works.05:58
xubuntu122windows disc image burner is what i used06:00
AussieDownUnderxubuntu122, okay well as long as it works that's all you need. Maybe if you ran "dxdiag" (without the quotation marks) in windows & gave me the info it brings up I may be able to help find the firmware for that laptop.06:01
AussieDownUnderI think it's great in the Ubuntu.Debian distros that there's so many software source mirrors to choose from, I get to download my updates unmetered as well as a heap of debian distro iso's06:03

pjotterHello everyone. Just installed the latest Xubuntu 12.04 LTS. But no prop. drivers are available? Is this correct? In previous version I could install an ATI driver for my gfxcard.09:40
AussieDownUnderDoes anyone know if that cross platform ubuntu stuff for mobiles, tablets & pc's will be compatible with xbuntu? So say I have xubuntu on my pc & a tablet, mobile with ubuntu will they go together. Or does anyone think there'll be derivative distrubutions of ubuntu for mobile?09:56
AussieDownUnderpjotter, There should be drivers. Settings Manager - Additional Drivers, let it load & usually there's like 3 drivers to pick from. I'm on an AMD 6700hd card & that's what I get.09:58
pjotter1I tried. The screen remains blank. It used to gove three options or so. I know. But now they're all gone.09:59
pjotter1I installed the latest Xubuntu AMD 12.04-4 LTS09:59
AussieDownUnderdone the updates?10:04
pjotter1Yes10:05
pjotter1Complete clean install10:05
pjotter1Maybe I should revert back to 12.04-3 That version had no problems finfing the prop . drivers.10:06
AussieDownUnderGo set your software source to download from the closest mirror to you. Then in a terminal run "sudo apt-get update"10:06
AussieDownUnderThen restart, then go force updates. Probs could pick things up10:06
AussieDownUnderI'm no pro btw lol.10:06
AussieDownUnderMan 2 months & 14.04lts is out, you're mad fresh installing another 12.04 release10:07
AussieDownUnderI'm currently in 14.04 daily10:07
AussieDownUnderWorks good so far.10:08
pjotter1Great. I stick to the LTS versions. In a few months there will be e new one too. :)10:08
Sysithe point versions are just updated installation disks10:08
Sysithe point of LTS is to not need to reinstall every few months10:08
pjotter1I know. That's why I find it so strange that all over sudden the prop drivers have disappeared.10:09
pjotter1I'll try installing 12.04-3 and update that one.10:09
AussieDownUnderForgot about that. So he would of been on 12.04.4 anyway because it would of updated itself but he thought he needed to install from the iso again lol?10:09
Sysiwell, they update the backported kernel and xorg versions but you might as well use the original ones10:11

jkiddohi ...18:52
fibz_someone235, i would have the 24GB drive as "/" formatted as EXT4 and the 120GB HDD as /home (ext4)  for swap, you would get better performance with it on the SSD, but your SSD will live longer if you put the SWAP on the 120 GB mechanical HDD18:55

asd_how can i fix it?19:32
bekksasd_: The only ways are to either wait until the author of that PPA in question provides a valid package list. or by removing that PPA as well as all packages that were installed from there.19:41
bekksMeanwhile, you can just ignore that error.19:41

someone235Hey, I've installed Xubuntu on ASUS PC with EFI, and now I can't boot from the OS. Someone knows how can I boot with EFI?19:52
koegsis there a way to start xfce4-manager minimized?21:10
d1390Hi, came by earler today looking for help installing Xubuntu 13.10 with UEFI and still haven't solved it, is anyone around to help?21:21
Unit193koegs: xfce4-manager?  Anyway, devilspie could do it for you.21:23
Unit193d1390: What was the problem exactly?21:24
Unit193!uefi21:24
ubottuUEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI21:24
Unit193(Just in case.)21:24
koegsUnit193: xfce4-taskmanager :)21:26
koegsbut you are right, devilspie could do the job21:27
Unit193Ah, that was my guess as it made more sense than xfce4-settings-manager. :P21:27
d1390Problem is I get black screen after selecting install or try21:27
d1390tried adding nomodeset by pressing e and changing the setparams but no luck21:27
d1390also tried replacing the quiet splash option for text to try and start x separetly but the black screen persists21:28
d1390the screen's backlight is on, it just isn't displaying anything21:28
d1390Managed to getting working by changing boot setting to legacy, if I install like this will my preinstalled windows still run?21:34
Unit193Both operating systems must be installed in either legacy or UEFI.21:35
d1390ok, back to start then. At least I know it's not my live usb key and it does seem to be a graphics thing21:36
d1390will keep trying21:36
Unit193I presume you can't re-install Windows?21:40
d1390I'd need to talk to the IT people in my office, it's a work machine21:54
d1390(and unfortunately they're note very good with computers)21:55
d1390(i.e. one of them asked how I'm running Mac on a PC when he saw my Unity desktop)21:55
