zack123hello02:51
zack123can someone help me install kali without vbox02:51
zack123???02:51
holsteinzack123: maybe a kali support channel02:52
holstein!kali02:52
ubottuUbuntu channels can only provide support for Ubuntu itself, as other distributions and derivatives have repository and software changes. Please consult their websites for more information. Examples: gNewSense (support in #gnewsense), Linux Mint (see !mint), kali-linux (#kali-linux), CrunchBang (support in #crunchbang), BackTrack (support in #backtrack-linux)02:52
holsteinzack123: the installer will be similar, if not the same as ubuntu's.. but, its not supported here02:52
zack123i was baned for idk what02:52

deltboot interrupted when trying to run from the CDD. after ending up in a basic environment, tried running "update-grub" ...no success :(06:12
ruiendelt: I think i've done what you are referring to, but it may or may not be exactly the same. GRUB should be able to do it, but you need to give it options about which drive and such to install to, and where the root is. I think there are some options in the manpage or some examples online for that06:14
ruieni remember having to mount my linux partition and chroot into it, I think, then do the grub stuff?06:14

deltfaaackk this is so simple with lilo!!!!!06:17
ruiendelt: I used to have to do this a lot before, but haven't used windows at all since 12.04 release, so I forgot. I bet if you can give us some pastes of what you're seeing we can help you work it out.06:18
deltoh speaking of which i'm on a slackware partition right now06:19
deltruien: you have a computer. with a broken boot record.06:19
deltruien: and you have a CD with ubuntu on it.06:20
deltruien: fix. how??06:20
ruieni've never had a broken boot record except because of windows, so i haven't had a broken boot record for over two years, so I forgot. I can't really break my workstation to figure it out, but if i see what you're seeing I'm sure it'll come back to me.06:21
delti DO NOT want to reinstall ubuntu to a dummy partition, just to have grub fix my mbr.06:23
ruienerr.. who said you'd have to do that? Pretty sure you can fix it right from the liveCD.06:24

leguaanican anyone here help with nvidia drivers?15:05
leguaanior know where i should ask15:06
holstein!nvidia | leguaani15:06
ubottuleguaani: For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto15:06
holsteinhere is where you can ask15:06
leguaanii did install them already, actually tried a few15:07
holsteina few what?15:07
leguaanibut the problem is the "powermizer" thing is broken and fan is running full speed15:07
leguaanidifferent versions of drivers.15:07
holsteinsure, and it may not be supported15:07
leguaaniso theres no way to change the power state?15:08
holsteinleguaani: its all open on this end, so there is always a way15:08
holsteinleguaani: ideally, nvidia will provide you, or their driver, or linux a way to interface with the hardware they have created that you have purchased15:09
holsteinif they havent, then, sometimes, compromises will need to be made15:09
leguaanioops, sorry I should have mentioned this is a old laptop15:09
holsteini would say, the first step would be to look for documentation for your specific hardware and ubuntu15:09
leguaaniso I would not expect much much support from nvidia15:10
holsteinyou can also try the main ubuntu community, since this is not specifically related to xfce or xubuntu, and there is no constructive reason to limit your search here15:10
leguaanithey didn't seem interested, also I thought it could be window manager related15:11
holsteini would get specifics about the hardware model and share those.. occasionally, on older machines, i'll try an older release.. or, i'll just use the vesa driver15:11
holsteinleguaani: try another window manager if you feel it is..15:11
leguaaniit's geforce fx5200m15:11
holsteinleguaani: the issue is, others have problems with nvidia as you mention.. the window manager is pretty well suported and tested15:12
leguaaniI was just seeking another opinion, in case I'm being stupid15:12
leguaaniok.15:12
holsteinleguaani: the vesa driver is always an option15:12
leguaanibut my main problem is ear splitting fan noise, so I don't really care what driver I'm using if I could lower the power state?15:13
holsteinleguaani: have you tried the vesa driver?15:13
leguaanido you been the default driver in xubuntu (sorry I'm quite new to this)15:13
holsteinleguaani: no.. i mean the vesa driver15:14
holsteinleguaani: the default in xubuntu for that hardware will be the open nvidia driver15:14
holsteinleguaani: then, there is the proprietary one in the repos, and a newer one you can get from the nvidia site (likely newer) and the ppa version fom xswat15:15
holsteinleguaani: then, you can try the vesa driver15:15
holstein!vesa15:15
ubottuvesa is the default video driver if X can't find a better one. Also see !x15:15
leguaaniok, I have only used the open nvidia one and few versions of proprietary one.15:15
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1270209 is a sample one15:16
leguaaniuhh, sorry but what are the !things?15:16
holsteini would just drop it in, and not bother with the resolution settings.. just test the driver and the fan noise issue you are trying to address15:16
holsteinleguaani: the !things are information from the bot.. about !vesa for example15:16
leguaaniokay that should have been obvious :D15:17
holsteinleguaani: i mention it because i have the *exact* same issue on a via chip.. i use the open chrome driver now, but, years back, i chose to use the vesa driver, since the fan noise was an issue15:17
leguaanithat sounds good15:18
holsteinsure.. and i have also had other cases (nvidia) where i just lived with the fan noise.. and other cases, where i just changed hardware15:20
leguaanithat post says it sets 60hz refresh, but it seems the laptop screen is only 50hz?15:20
holsteincould be the proprietary driver for your device needs or suuports an older kernel15:20
leguaaniyeah I have AMD+AMD on my desktop and Intel/Intel on my "real" laptop15:21
holsteinleguaani: you put that file in place, reboot, and you can remove it from a live CD or tty or recovery console and get back to where you are now15:21
leguaaniI'm just trying to resurrect a old laptop for checking email etc15:21
leguaaniok I'll try it15:22
leguaaniI'll reboot now see how it goes, thanks for the help15:26
