=== Lcawte is now known as Lcawte|Away
diddledangrr @ io blocking00:36
diddledanseems to be causing me to disconnect, too00:36
ali1234io blocking?00:37
diddledanali1234: my mac appears to hang on heavy io00:37
ali1234running linux?00:37
diddledanno, osx00:37
ali1234oh, well, gl with that :)00:37
diddledanindeed00:38
ali1234if it was linux i'd tell you to switch to noop scheduler on USB flash drives00:38
ali1234that seems to fix it00:38
shaunois it on usb?00:38
diddledanI am actually in the process of getting ubuntu installed, which brought this issue to light. copying my music onto a fat32 partition caused my mac to completely grind to a halt00:38
shaunoI'd be kinda worried about that00:43
shaunoit shouldn't be struggling at all.  have you tried fsck/DU ?00:44
shauno(or are you just copying all your files onto a drive that's acting broken, and then gonna pull a sadface when it turns out they never made it)00:44
diddledanit's my inbuilt system drive00:45
diddledanit seems to be ok again now00:45
diddledanstil doing a poo-load of io but it's not hanging anymore00:46
shaunoI'd still be tempted to pop open Disk Utility and see if Verify coughs up any fs corruption, etc00:46
diddledanI wonder if I was writing to blocks that hadn't been trim'd00:46
shaunoor find some other way to verify the contents once they get there.  because that's a pretty dodgy scenario.  you move everything from A to B so that A has space to wipe & install ubuntu.  and then find out that B is buggered and it's all gone00:49
shaunoreminds me of a mistake I made installing debian *years* ago though.  moved everything from disk1 to disk2 so disk1 was nice and clean and empty00:51
shaunoand then accidentally installed debian to disk2 instead00:51
diddledanit'll all be "in the cloud" if it is buggered00:51
diddledansorry language*00:51
diddledanlol00:51
diddledanoops00:51
diddledanthat's one annoying thing about unices but it can also be an advantage - the naming of block devices can be pretty random00:52
diddledanyou know it's disk one in osx but it suddenly becomes sdb in loonicks00:52
diddledandisk1*00:52
diddledandisk0* even00:52
shaunowell, that was seriously potato-era.  I'd be just as welling to blame human error.  some lessons you just can't forget00:52
diddledanmm, mashed potato00:53
shaunohere's trivia; if you boot a mac from efi on usb, the disks are always numbered backwards00:53
shaunoon the plus side it means the boot media is always disk0.  on the down side it means my two hdd are reversed00:54
shaunobut even grub-efi behaves the same00:55
shaunoanyhoo, I'm off to bed.  but distrust and verify; the only time I've managed to sink mine so hard that other apps were unresponsive, was when I went 300Gb into swap with a Blender accident00:58
diddledan\o/01:03
diddledanblender accidents sound messy, but fun01:03
shaunocapital-B for a reason ;)01:03
shauno(watch /var/log/system.log too.  it's surprisingly not useless)01:05
daftykinsXD01:06
daftykins300GB?01:07
ali1234fairly easy to do01:09
ali1234convert a video file to animated gif and open in eog, it will allocate hundreds of gigabytes because it tries to hold every frame uncompressed in memory01:10
ali1234the animated gif may be only a couple of GB01:10
daftykinsD:01:11
ali1234also the oomkiller won't kill it until it has actually used all that memory due to copy-on-write01:11
daftykinsthat seems greatly flawed01:11
shaunoit was my first attempt at rendering minecraft maps.  I suspect I bot off too big a chunk01:12
ali1234so this will lock up the machine for a rather long time01:12
shauno(and osx pages to dynamic files rather than a partition, so it'll happily eat swap until it runs out of disk)01:12
ali1234lol that's even worse01:12
ali1234anyway, cgroups fixes this i hope01:12
ali1234we can reserve physical memory for the system and force other processes to swap01:12
ali1234so now swap is actually useful again :)01:13
shaunomost the time it's happy because I live in <64Mb swap.  when it's not happy it's really not happy01:13
popey\o/01:13
popeysurprised my laptop is only using 560KB swap at the moment01:14
popeyKiB Mem:  16314212 total, 15742300 used,   571912 free,     1700 buffers01:14
popeyKiB Swap:  8501244 total,      560 used,  8500684 free.  9165432 cached Mem01:14
ali1234why would it use any at all when you have 16GB?01:14
popeychromium01:15
daftykinsD:01:15
daftykinspopey: how many tabs? XD01:15
ali1234you haven;t even used 8GB01:15
popeynot so many today01:15
popeyyeah, today01:15
ali1234chromium isn't *that* heavy on ram01:15
popeyits way better than it was01:15
popeyit is with 2 profiles open with ~60 tabs open01:15
popeybut as I say,things are better now01:16
popeythere was a monster xorg leak recently which was solved, which makes me happy01:16
ali1234was that the crashy one?01:16
shaunoswapping a little isn't always a bad thing.  if something genuinely hasn't been touched for hours, it makes sense to write it out01:16
popeyno, leaky one01:16
popeyI have a new crasher!01:16
shaunowhat do you win when you collect them all?01:17
popeybug 128356801:17
lubotu3bug 1283568 in xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) "Desktop crashes when docking/undocking" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/128356801:17
popeyalso crashes when changing resolution01:17
* popey changes the title of that bug01:17
ali1234this is why i use nvidia01:18
popeywell indeed01:18
shaunoare they not the same thing?  undocking for me means a monitor goes missing01:18
ali1234incidentally, unity-greeter is broken with nvidia on trusty01:18
popeyoh?01:18
popeywfm01:18
ali1234it ignores the xorg.conf, which means you can't arrange your monitors01:19
ali1234this persists into the user session01:19
ali1234doesn't happen with the other lightdm greeters01:20
ali1234it's probably something to do with mir. does 14.04 use XMir by default for unity?01:20
popeyits nothing to do with mir01:21
popeythere's no mir in 14.0401:21
popeyi did have a problem with lightdm last week though01:21
popeyi switched to gdm for a day01:21
ali1234what was the problem?01:21
popeyi dont know.01:21
popeywell, lightdm wouldn't start01:21
popeyor would, sometimes01:21
ali1234hmm.. worked okay for me with the gtk-greeter01:22
popeyboth on intel and nvidia, very inconsistent and I needed to work so just installed gdm and forgot it01:22
ali1234i dont really understand why the greeter makes any difference, i mean lightdm runs the X server01:22
popeywell no01:23
popeylightdm runs its own x server01:23
popeyAIUI01:23
popey← not an expert01:23
popey /var/log/lightdm/ reveals its own xorg log separate from /var/log/Xorg.0.log01:23
ali1234lightdm runs the X server, then it runs the greeter inside it. then the greeter exits and the desktop loads up. same X server01:23
popeyhm01:23
popeyi thought they were separate, huh.01:24
ali1234we use this in xubuntu to keep the wallpaper present when the session loads up01:24
popeyah, nice.01:24
ali1234it's also why the nvidia and unity=greeter problem persists into the session01:24
popeyflicker-free stuff?01:24
ali1234yeah01:24
popeynice01:24
ali1234lightdm does it's own logging of the X server for the lock screen. that can be implemented as a second X session (although that doesn't work to well and i think all sessions dropped it because of the console kit mess)01:26
diddledanwhat does consolekit do?01:27
* diddledan googles01:27
diddledanaah it's deprecated01:27
diddledanin favour of further monoliticating systemd01:28
diddledanmonolithicating**01:28
ali1234when you switch to a different VT (ie ctrl-alt-f1) console kit changes the permissions on the audio devices for "security"01:28
ali1234also does a bunch of other stuff01:29
ali1234this means your audio stops playing when the screen locks, if a second X session is used01:29
popeybedlington01:29
popeynn01:29
ali1234musingly this actually provides no security at all01:29
diddledannn popey01:29
ali1234it only happens because pulseaudio cooperates with console kit01:29
ali1234a malicious user can open devices and keep access, because linux does not support revoking file descriptors01:31
ali1234so for example you can login, open the webcam, then switch user... and then spy on whoever logs in next01:31
diddledannice!01:31
ali1234console kit will change the permissions on the device so that you can't open it any more, but you already opened it...01:31
shaunoI tend to nuke consolekit because I don't like it taking up half a screen of top on headless machines / VMs01:31
diddledandoes -server even install it?01:32
shaunoit appears so01:32
ali1234yes, because it works with VTs and there are always VTs01:32
diddledanI don't see any on a vm I run01:33
shaunoI tend to get a bit obsessive about keeping a short process list though.  I even kill gettys I don't want01:33
diddledanthere's a load of kworker01:33
diddledanand ksoftirqd01:34
ali1234i guess actually it is not installed01:34
diddledanand migration and watchdog, but no consolekit01:34
shaunohm, I wonder why I keep ending up with it01:34
diddledanmaybe the cloudimage release includes it where a from-scratch install doesn't01:36
daftykinsg'night all, have a good week \o01:36
diddledannn daftykins01:37
shaunoit appears to be present in http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04.4-server-amd64.list01:37
diddledanshauno: but then so is bind9 which afaik isn't installed by default01:38
diddledanand byobu01:39
shaunoright, that's offered up by tasksel at the end of the install01:39
diddledanexactly it's optional so that list tells you squat about what's installed by default01:40
shaunootoh it's probably on the disk for a reason.  it's a bit late for me to try it now, and I can't remember where the seeds are01:41
shaunobut I've certainly never installed it intentionally, because it's frankly braindead on a VM01:41
maphm02:08
maphow can i make something simply start when my machines boots up02:08
mapsay shoutcast for example02:08
mapi thought i could just make a basic script launching the shoutcast dameon chuck it in /etc/init.d and do update-rc.d?02:09
ali1234there are multiple ways to do it02:11
mapah02:11
ali1234that isn't one of them though02:12
ali1234do you really want it to run on bootup?02:12
ali1234or when you log in?02:12
mapon boot id prefer02:12
diddledanfor the basic script approach I believe /etc/rc.local is still supported02:12
mapfor on login i could use /etc/profile.d no?02:12
ali1234yes. you can also set cron job @reboot i think02:12
diddledanyes @reboot cron jobs also work02:12
ali1234for running things at login use xdg-autostart02:12
ali1234also you can use upstart to do both (if your session supports it)02:13
diddledanthe advantage of @reboob cron is that any user with cron access can run a script at reboot under their own userspace02:13
diddledanthey don't need root perms is what I mean02:13
mapi see upstart? not sure what that means ..seen it mentioned when i was reading some docs02:14
diddledanupstart is a replacement for init02:14
diddledanit's jobs are defined in /etc/init/02:14
diddledanthey're not "standard scripts" however02:15
mapah02:15
mapcan you not use old init and upstart then?02:15
diddledanthe advantage of upstart vs the older method of scripts in /etc/rc?.d/foo is that the latter is purely alphabetically ordered and executes in series whereas upstart jobs can start in parallel and can be fired based on more than just init-level02:17
diddledanrunlevel**02:17
diddledane.g. start the ntp client only after network is fully operational and can reach the outside world02:18
mapya02:18
diddledanit's actually defined more like "when network starts I want ntp client to start" rather than being a limit it's a "as soon as this happens I want that to occur"02:19
diddledaninverted order of control I guess02:20
diddledaneach job defined what flags cause it to start and as soon as that flag is waved the job begins02:20
diddledanthe flag can be waved by any number of different actors, though, so it makes for really fine-grained control02:21
mapis upstart only ubuntu though?02:21
diddledanyes, and it's also going to be dropped at some time in the future (post 14.04) when debian migrates to systemd02:22
mapoh02:23
diddledanbut for the forseeable future it's staying until systemd is properly tested and integrated by debian02:23
mapconfusing..so what does say suse use?02:23
ali1234systemd02:23
mapah ok02:23
ali1234everything uses systemd except for slackware, gentoo, ubuntu, and chromeOS02:24
diddledandebian 8 doesn't feature freeze until november(?) so we're not likely to see systemd in ubuntu until 15.04 at the ealiest (IMO - large grain of salt required)02:24
ali1234oh and debian for now02:24
ali1234of those, only ubuntu and chromeOS use upstart02:24
diddledangentoo uses it's own concoction02:24
ali1234well the same could be said of ubuntu02:25
diddledanI guess slackware still runs initv?02:25
ali1234prolly02:25
mappsstupid router02:38
mapps:D02:38
diddledanso now that galaxynexus isn't supported on ubuntu touch is there an unofficial port yet?03:46
ali1234ask popey tomorrow03:53
diddledanwilldo03:55
diddledanit looks like cdimage.ubuntu.com is still getting precompiled dailies03:56
diddledanfor maguro (gnex)03:56
ali1234also dholbach seemed to be interested in coordinating community efforts03:56
stgraberdiddledan: it's not, look at the actual timestamp03:57
ali1234https://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-phone/msg05892.html03:57
diddledanstgraber: from here? http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch/daily-preinstalled/current/03:57
stgraberdiddledan: right03:58
diddledanstgraber: looks up-to-date to me03:58
ali1234what do you mean by "actual timestamp"03:58
stgraberdiddledan: if you look, all files are from the 24th except for maguro that's from the 22nd03:58
stgraberdiddledan: ah no, not that link03:58
stgraberdiddledan: that shows you old images from the 20th03:58
stgraberdiddledan: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch/daily-preinstalled/pending/ for the actual recent one (after maguro was deprecated)03:59
diddledanaah yes03:59
ali1234so you really only stopped 4 days ago?03:59
ali1234or is that just how long it took for the code to bitrot to the point of not building?03:59
diddledanlol04:00
ali1234when i did the galaxysmtd port it took about a month before it was totally broken by ubuntu changes (to the point of not even producing an image), so that would be about right04:01
stgraberali1234: I'm not sure about the details, though I suspect maguro was removed as a build target of the android package, at which point it caused cdimage to fail to extract the files and everything to get in the current state04:02
diddledanwell. theoretically my gnex isn't required for day-to-day usage so I guess I could _try_ to come up with a port myself04:02
stgraberali1234: cdimage expires files after a week, so I'd expect maguro to be completely gone by then04:02
diddledanis the buildd setup documented anywhere? and the CI train? i.e. could I replicate the infrastructure easily (following a guide)?04:05
diddledanI guess I need to join ubuntu-touch04:05
diddledan#04:05
ali1234that's basically the question dholbach asked on the ML. nobody answered04:06
diddledanstgraber: you've got a nice post on your blog on setting up a touch image server :-)04:59
Hornetfun question: how can I move an entire filesystem to another drive, on an existing machine?05:08
Hornetbackground: building a server, which comes with a 250gb drive. once this is set up and my raid array is installed and tested, I'd want to move the OS to the raid, and replace the 250 with a 1tb drive05:09
Hornetshort of having the whole damn thing running from a USB stick for however long the raid takes to be tested & build, the simplest option I can think of is simply reinstall the entire OS?05:10
MartijnVdSHornet: it is possible to copy filesystems, either "all content" or *everything*05:10
diddledanHornet: you'll want to do it offline. either tar it up and copy across, or rsync it across or dd it block-by-block05:10
diddledanello MartijnVdS05:11
Hornethm05:11
MartijnVdSor fsarchiver only he used blocks05:11
MartijnVdShe=the05:11
HornetI suppose if everything's referencing the mount point rather than the uuid, it might be okay with that05:11
diddledanooh, I not heard of fsarchiver before05:12

diddledanargh, why on ubuntu when you click "restart" after doing a load of updates (on a button that says "restart") does it then pop up another box asking if you want to restart or shutdown?!07:23
diddledansurely it would be simpler to just restart at that point, no?!07:24

ikoniadiddledan: did you say you have 14.04 of a retina mbp12:05
diddledanikonia, yes12:05
ikoniadiddledan: has the font/retina problem been resolved ?12:05
diddledanikonia, I don't know what problem that is to be able to tell you whether it's been fixed or not12:05
ikoniait was to do with how retina displayed certain ubuntu fonts, it couldn't do them nativly when using retina resolutions so used to mess up scaling them12:06
ikoniamess up, scaling them, not "upscaling" them12:06
diddledanikonia, the scaling slider doesn't appear to change any scaling on mine12:06
ikoniaok, so probably still broke at some level then12:06
diddledanso I can't tell you about any issues with specific quirks12:07

daftykins;)18:03
neurothe copy i just "obtained" is the 4K remaster from last year18:03
neuroand age really has nothing to do with it18:03
neurolook at some of the stuff Criterion or Lowry do18:04
daftykins4K D:18:04
neurothey scan in the negs at 4K or 8K18:04
neurowhere applicable, they do damage repair and colour correction18:04
mapps8k wow18:04
neurothen making a 2K release for blu ray or broadcast is straight forward from htere18:05
diddledanas I say, film is pretty diffcult to tell apart from digital hd when it's captured right18:05
mappshow do they 'scan it in' that confuses me wouldnt they have to film it in 4k/8k18:05
diddledanthe problem is we have a lost decade or two of video-only productions18:05
neuroand like i say, if the transfer is done well, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between something shot on a decent Panavision 35mm from 40 years ago and something shot last week on a RED18:05
daftykinsnah they have machines that do the mechanical process of a projector but just one frame at a time, then scan in each individual one18:05
daftykinsthen their teams go nuts on the scans reworking them as neuro says18:06
mappsahh ok reworking frame by frame?!18:06
mappswow18:06
daftykinswell obviously digital techniques can speed that up18:06
mappsso what does it mean to scan it in at 8k then if its still got to be reworked18:06
mappsea18:06
daftykinsthe easiest of which would be those disney animated ones, where they can practically just colour fill the cells :D18:06
neuromapps: "film it in 4k/8k" ...18:07
mappsyea18:07
neuro35mm is about 5K18:07
neuro65mm is about 7K18:07
neuro70mm is about 9K18:07
neurothat's optimal res with good lenses and no anamorphic production18:08
mappshas anyone seen some 4k on these ultra hd tvs18:08
neuroand you scan in at 8K if you can to ensure highest possible quality for any required repair work, and to avoid aliasing issues18:09
daftykinsnah not seen anything 4K yet18:09

daftykinsmmm Blade Runner is possibly one of the best looking oldest i've seen18:13
neuroremember, it's not necessarily about age18:13

daftykinsi gave it up 'cause it had 2GB RAM fully populated and the P4 era xeons just weren't worth the 300W it was pulling19:12
daftykinsplus yeah, you could hear it in every room of the house @_@19:13
MooDoooh mines not that old, quad xeon I think19:13

mappshttp://www.ip2location.com/developers/debian-package - how do you actually run it? it just mentions running a test20:53
mappsanyone20:55
shaunoshort version, you don't21:03
mappsshauno, what do you mean21:04
shaunoit's a library, not a standalone tool.  so it's intended to provide that functionality to other programs21:05
mappsah21:05
mappsso i cant run it from the command line and use it in say a bash script21:05
shaunonot without writing something that uses that library, no21:06
mappsthanks21:06
mappsnow here's a questionb..im a bit confused by i asked yesterday and upstart /etc/init.d etc mentioned - what should i lookup for how to make an app start at boot?21:06
shaunoyou might want to look at geoip-bin; it uses a different database (maxmind's, iirc), but it's ready to use21:07
MartijnVdSfor now, create an upstart job (/etc/init/blah.conf)21:07
MartijnVdSbut be prepared to rewrite to a systemd thingy for the next LTS (16.04)21:07
MartijnVdS(IN 2016!))21:07
mappsa .conf file MartijnVdS  not a script? so just google ubuntu upstart?:P21:07
MartijnVdSmapps: just look for the upstart manual, it's easy :)21:07
MartijnVdSmapps: also, check the existing .conf  files21:07
mappsyes21:07
mappsthanks :)21:07
mappsyea ive got that on atm shauno  was just looking at geoiplookup21:08

mappsmodselektor is so good21:12
diddledandogmatic69, dang21:18
diddledandogmatic69, I had a similar issue with a desktop mobo I bought a few years ago - had a damned push-button cmos reset switch that was supposed to poke out the IO shield at the back of the case. the IO shield or my case were the wrong shape so the button was permanently depressed causing zero powerup21:19
dogmatic69diddledan: sounds like much head in desk after figuring that one out21:21
diddledanyes, yes it was :-D21:21

mappsnot keen on having a seperate modem/router setup...and couldnt see any dd/openwrt compatible modem/router combos?21:53
ali1234no modems have open source baseband drivers21:58
ali1234the only routers that fully support openwrt are ones that need an external modem21:59
mappsyea21:59
mappsso maybe il have to give in an get a router and modem seperate22:00
shaunomight be the first time I've seen someone actually prefer a combo22:00
mappsjust for ease basically lol22:01
mappsand if i buy a new modem then what about when i get ftc22:01
mappswhich they say coming soon..last year and this year22:01
shaunosurely you'd have the same problem with a combo?22:02
mappswell22:02
shaunojust instead of replacing the modem, you'd be replacing the whole thing22:02
mappsyea22:02
mappstrue22:03
