Addlercw2: What do you mean? Right click on desktop, choose Default Desktop Settings, then View (which should be the default anyways) and there we go.00:54
rcw2Addle, wow, was it always this easy before 13.10?  i never found these easy instructions in the past via search engines00:59
Addlercw2: Pretty sure it's been like that for a loooong time. :)01:00

lars__I¨m using Kubuntu 12.04, and I would like to install some extra fonts:  how do I do that?  Do I need to install a font management application using Muon?02:44
lars__By the way, what kind of format would Berkeley font use?  Is Berkeley a PostScript Type 1 font?02:47
valorie!fonts02:56
ubottuFont installation basics here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FontInstallHowto - No fonts in Flash? Install "ttf-mscorefonts-installer" (from !Multiverse), "gsfonts", and "gsfonts-x11". For the official ubuntu font, see: http://font.ubuntu.com/02:56
valorielars__: ^^^02:56
lars__yeah?02:57
lars__I need OpenType fonts, so I can use them for Windows, too02:57
valorieI never install extra fonts, and don't use win, so the above is as much as I know02:58
valoriehope it is helpful02:58
lars__the first link did not work02:59
valoriejust search for font in muon03:06
valorienot sure what the installer is called now03:07
valoriealso, that's a wiki page so that you can fix it03:07

lars__I found a good font manager using the Muon Software Centre, but it has some drawbacks and the critics cautioned against it if youŕe not an expert03:15
lars__Itś called Font Manager03:16
lars__It looks like it can cause problems by overwriting files and messing with your directories03:19
lars__if you don¨t know what you¨re doing03:19
lars__They say version 0.5.7 of Font Manager is dangerous, but I don¨t know what version the Muon Software Centre provides03:21
lars__Has anyone ever heard of a package called edUbuntuFonts?03:25
lars__Itś called edubuntu-fonts03:25
valorie!info edubuntu-fonts03:31

lars__Why did you tell me that stuff about the font managers?03:46
lars__Anyway, I just installed edubuntu-fonts03:46
lars__I completed the installation, but I can¨t find it anywhere on my PC03:48
lars__However, when I ran LibreOffice Writer I found a whole bunch of new fonts available: like a hundred new fonts03:54
lars__but I don¨t see any fonts typically used by paginators and news editors03:54
valorieyou asked about the version number; the bot knows that kind of information03:55
lars__Isn¨t there a way to install fonts individually?03:55
valorieprobably though the manager?03:55
lars__I dont think I have a font manager03:55
valorielong time ago I downloaded them, then used the manager or config thing to install them03:56

lars__Ok, I¨ve spent enough time on this font stuff, I´m getting nohwere, I¨ll just keep using Windows for desktop publishing for now04:01
lars__thanks for trying to help, anyway04:01
lars__Ironically, I¨m using Linux to download fonts, which I then copy into my Windows PC for desktop publishing.  so far it¨s working, but I just hope I don¨t get malware when I try to download the Berkeley fonts04:04

lars__May be one of the native Ubuntu or Linux fonts looks like Berkeley04:07
lars__I¨m not sure04:07

kaddihi guys.. i'm havnig a problem with my laptop. Starting today the screen is stripey, I've checked and the problem doesn't appear in bios screen or during boot-up. So I'm guessing a module/driver issue in ubuntu. I'm using 13.10 up to date on a samsung with touchscreen...  Any suggestions how to troubleshoot?09:02

Guest69060Hello, I'm trying to install dual boot from a live cd of 13.10 and I keep getting an error that ubi-partman has failed to load with error 14112:04
Guest69060Can anyone help me get this figured out?12:04
Guest69060Hello, I'm trying to install dual boot from a live cd of 13.10 and I keep getting an error that ubi-partman has failed to load with error 14112:05
BluesKajGuest69060, do you have the ext/linux partition created ?12:08
Guest69060yes12:09
Guest69060blueskaj, I have a blank partition prepared that I shrunk from inside windows 812:11
Guest69060blueskaj, in between sda5 and sda6 I have an unallocated 827gb that I intended to use for the kubuntu install12:13
Guest69060I also checked the dvd for errors before running the install12:14
BluesKajGuest69060, make sure you format the partition intended for kubuntu to ext4 first , it's easier and that should get rid of the error, Use gparted live cd to partition then install kubuntu12:17
Guest69060blueskaj, I've got gparted up, I'm sorry for my ignorance, but I'm not easily seeing the controls to change the unallocated space to ext412:19
BluesKajGuest69060, hifglight the unallocated space, right click choose "new" in the dialog, then ext4 in the drop down12:21
BluesKajclick apply12:22
Guest69060I probably need to open gparted as super user, since I'm greyed out in the new section12:23
BluesKajhow many partitions primary partitions do have ?12:27
Guest69060712:27
BluesKajoops let me rephrase that, how many primary partitions do you have ?12:28
Guest69060212:28
BluesKajok12:28
Guest69060what is the terminal name for the kde partition manager? So I can open it in sudo? It's not qtparted or gparted12:29
Guest69060got it open, but new is still greyed out12:31
BluesKajGuest69060, are you running gparted live cd/media ?12:31
Guest69060live cd12:32
BluesKajyou shouldn't need to be super user12:32
Guest69060even in super user it's greyed out12:33
Guest69060so it's not that12:33
BluesKajunmount said partition12:33
Guest69060unallocated is not mounted according to mtab12:35
BluesKajyou don't need to run a terminal in gparted, the dialogs in the gui should suffice12:37
Guest69060all of my options in the gui under partition are greyed out12:39
BluesKajperhaps you haven't finished applying the last command, click on the green checkmark12:42
Guest69060apply is greyed out too12:42
BluesKajcan you highlight the unallocated partition?12:43
Guest69060yeah it's highlit12:43
BluesKajok what options do you have when right clicking on it?12:44
Guest69060Just properties12:45
BluesKajweird, that usually means there's an OS installed and is unavailable because it's being used12:46
Guest69060it's unallocated space though12:47
BluesKajdid you format it ?12:48
BluesKajpreviously12:48
Guest69060I used the windows shrink tool, is there anything else I needed to do?12:48
Guest69060this computer was new in box this morning12:48
BluesKajW8.1 right?12:49
Guest69060yes12:49
Guest69060http://imgur.com/pzMR4KO is what I'm seeing12:50
BluesKajthe new efi/bios poses a problem for installing linux from live media, and i prefer the gparted live cd to the kubuntu live cd for managing partitions before installing12:54
Guest69060I can get gparted from muon, or should I download a gparted iso?12:55
BluesKajget the iso and burn it, then it will be available for future use, it's a very handy tool12:56
Guest69060blueskay, Ok I got gparted to make it an ext4 partition, although it's calling it New Partition #1 instead of sda#13:02
Guest69060blueskaj, Ok I got gparted to make it an ext4 partition, although it's calling it New Partition #1 instead of sda#13:03
BluesKajnot sda1?13:04
Guest69060sda1-6 are all named13:05
BluesKajthen it's probly a logical partition13:08
Guest69060I've got it set to create as primary partition13:08

BluesKajso13:11
Guest69060so?13:14

Guest69060I get an error about the backup gpt table not being at the end of the disk13:16
Guest69060looks like we're on track now13:20

LostInstallCan someone help me, I thought I was done installing 13.10 on a dual boot W8.1 machine, but whenever I select to load kubuntu I get an error saying windows failed to load. Gparted isn't showing an OS label on my partition for kubuntu, so maybe something failed on the install, but it looked ok.15:38
LostInstallhttp://imgur.com/GsooTMH is what my partitions look like15:41
BluesKajLostInstall, on the live cd, open a terminal and run, sudo grub-install /dev/sda, then sudo update-grub, then reboot if your Windows and Kubuntu partitions are successfully listed i15:53
BluesKajin grub15:54
LostInstallblueskaj, I just formatted the partition to start all over again. I'll do that if this doesn't work. Does the uefi boot mess with my ability to access grub?15:56
BluesKajLostInstall, it might, I switched to Legacy mode and just wiped the drive of W8.1, reformatted the partitions / and /home to ext4 and swap, so my experince with mucking about with uefi boot etc  is very limited16:00
LostInstallblueskaj, is there any downside to switching to legacy mode?16:02
BluesKajLostInstall, don't think W8.1 UEFI/boot (mbr) likes legacyI. I had W8.1 on an older desktop that didn't use UEFI and booted perfectly fine from grub16:06
BluesKajtried to research that question a while back and couldn't come to a clear conclusion , it's still all very murky and confusing to me16:08
BluesKajbut I have errands to do, so i have to leave for a while....BBL16:09
