tim`has anyone gotten the intel-linux-graphics-installer running on trusty?00:14
Beldartim` Those intel installers seem to be tied to releases, installed here balks at release.00:18
tim`Beldar: what is the best way to get the drivers on then?00:21
tim`my x server seems to be missing xvideo extensions on an intel hd 4400 ;[00:22
tim`i think gl is emulated as well00:22
Beldartim`, I would not know, but thise details night be helpful.00:22
tim`it seems like anyone loading trusty on a haswell machine will run into this - am i the only one with trouble here?00:23
Beldartim`, Have you ran the computer in the search on askubuntu to see if any hits?00:24
tim`ive been googling for anyone with similar problems for a while - havent hit on anything useful yet00:25
intokDamn, tried Alpha2 base install works, but running the updates results in them ending in a black screen with cursor in the upper left corner that has to be hard reset to get out of. Resetting results in a very broken desktop with tons of missing UI elements00:36
intoktrierd twice from a fresh install on an ECS KBN-I/2100 Kabini system using the default OSS drivers00:38

alexwhitmanI've just installed a daily build into VirtualBox, and after a reboot I've just got a flashing cursor instead of the login prompt.  Anyone know of a fix?11:57
BluesKaj'Morning folks13:57
StritHello guys. I made a script to use when I install 14.04 when it comes out. And to test it, I use a 14.04 daily build iso in virtual box to see if my script will run. But the part of the script which disables guest session seems to destroy lightdm so it won't start. So how do I correctly disable Guest Session in 14.04?15:12
minimecStrit: Never did that, but this looks promising... http://www.howtogeek.com/117994/how-to-disable-ubuntus-guest-session-account/15:20
Stritminimec, Yeah, that's what was in my script to start with. appearently it changed in 14.04.15:22
Stritminimec, on 14.04 /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf is an empty file.15:23
tsimpson"sudo lightdm-set-defaults  --allow-guest=false" is much better than editing the file directly15:26
minimecStrit: Take a look here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=220563715:27
Strittsimpson, that command is not present on my system.15:30
tsimpsonseems it was removed in 1.9.4 ...15:35
Stritminimec, Thanks mate. That worked!15:39
minimecStrit: No problem.15:40
Nothing_MuchHow do I report a bug for USC?17:00
minimecNothing_Much: Probably the apport-bug GUI is a good start17:05
Nothing_Muchminimec: well I mean a bug that doesn't crash the application17:06
Nothing_Muchlike, it won't install standalone .deb files outside of the USC17:06
minimecNothing_Much: A bug is a bug, even if it is a missing feature. I posted a bug for a missing package in Trusty Tahr. If it is not considered to be a bug, it will be marked as 'invalid'.17:08
Nothing_Muchoh17:08
guest4745757575hi17:16
guest4745757575during the installation how can i create a lvm with luks?17:16
guest4745757575just wanna do it as i did with 12.04 alternate17:16
* penguin42 thought that was in the GUI installer these days17:21
guest4745757575its not17:23
guest4745757575i can create a encrypted partition but lool ... how to add partitios in that lvm for root and the home dir?17:23
Nothing_Muchwell minimec, do you know why USC won't install standalone debs?17:23
penguin42guest4745757575: Oh, encrypted partition is luks/lvm17:24
guest4745757575penguin42, hmm?17:24
penguin42guest4745757575: The thing that the installer calls encrypted disk/partition is luks/lvm17:24
guest4745757575well... i can just set one mount point to to the encrypted partition. but thats some kind of wrong17:25
guest4745757575since lvm is made for doing more mountpoints in that encrypted partition17:25
minimecNothing_Much: I would install 'gdebi' for that, and then gdebi 'yourpackage.deb' or 'right click in the file manager and 'install with gdebi'. 'gdebi-gtk yourpackage.deb' would also work.17:25
penguin42hmm I'm confused, I've not looked at the GUI installer for a while, but I thought the choice was to just go for encrypted disk17:26
Nothing_Muchminimec: right, but USC did work with standalones before17:26
minimecNothing_Much: I don't know. Never did that. I never use USC.17:26
guest4745757575penguin42, its a dualboot. so this god damn crappy installer wont work. or i must be blind17:26
penguin42guest4745757575: Hang on, let me just boot it in a vm17:27
guest4745757575thank you very much17:27
guest4745757575since im not a netbook right now and using the keyboard kinda ..... :)17:28
guest4745757575on a netbook...17:28
penguin42guest4745757575: During the start of the installation is a box that says 'Installation type' and you have choice for upgrade/install/erase and on that is 'Encrypt the new Ubuntu installation' and 'Use LVM with the new Ubuntu installation'17:29
guest4745757575yes, that works only when i install only ubuntu. when i choose to install ubuntu besides windows those boxes are greyed out17:30
guest4745757575so i tried to change it by hand... but that does not work it seems ... :(17:31
gregLIs there a way in 14.04 using Gnome 3 to  change the properties  so I can  add gksudo to launch a program?17:31
penguin42guest4745757575: Ah, yes, if I do 'install alongside' it doesn't offer the encrypt/lvm options17:31
guest4745757575ridiculous, isnt it?17:32
guest4745757575so the use of ubunto goes exactly to zero for me :(17:32
guest4745757575"ubuntu"17:32
guest4745757575so whats now?17:34
penguin42guest4745757575: I'm wondering if it's just that dual boot setups are complex enough and it's not confident to offer it17:34
penguin42guest4745757575: You could go to the 'something else' option and setit manually17:34
guest4745757575i used this dualboot for years with other versions of ubuntu17:34
guest4745757575something else... yeah i tried that17:35
guest4745757575but how can i assing the mount points for root and home or swap?17:35
penguin42guest4745757575: and it lets you change a partition type as physical partition for encryption - sorted17:35
guest4745757575assign17:35
guest4745757575since i want to put the swap on a normal hdd, but this should belong to the lvm ofc17:36
penguin42guest4745757575: Create one partition, asssign it as physical partition for encryption, then it should let you use that as the backing of LVM , and add individual partitions to that17:36
guest4745757575and shopuld be also encrypted...17:36
penguin42guest4745757575: Having said that, I can't persuade it to let me do anything after I've chosen that option17:39
guest4745757575penguin42, i want the lvm with / and /home on the ssd and the swap on a normal hdd. ofc everything with lvm.... seems that i can not do that with newer ubuntu versions without and alternate cd.... just amazing17:40
guest4745757575-d17:40
penguin42guest4745757575: Yeh that's weird I'll agree17:41
guest4745757575so ubuntu starts to be useless like a fifth wheel on a car...17:41
guest4745757575outstanding!17:42
penguin42guest4745757575: File a bug on the installer; I agree with you on this17:42
penguin42guest4745757575: To me the problem seems to be the something-else crypto stuff is broken17:42
guest4745757575penguin42, its the same shit in 13.10 or what so ever came after 12.0417:42
guest4745757575no alternate cd = ubuntu is useless for my needs17:42
penguin42guest4745757575: The way I would do it is to manually create the luks/lvm set and then install - it normally lets you do that17:43
guest4745757575since they still not fixed it, im sure its a waste of time to complain and write a ticket @bugtracker17:44
guest4745757575also another thing... why do i not see this network icon at the top right? does canonical thing we dont need it anymore?17:45
penguin42guest4745757575: Hmm I just got it to do it, but I deleted my partitions and started again17:45
guest4745757575i mean thins indicator17:45

siavoshkcHi17:50
siavoshkcI need to install display driver for my old ati all -in wonder17:51
siavoshkcbecause ubuntu is running extemely slow17:53
siavoshkcand I think maybe it is because of display driver17:53
siavoshkcHow can I do it from terminal or GUI?17:53
bekkssiavoshkc: Which "old"?17:55
siavoshkceverything is old except the ubuntu17:56
bekkssiavoshkc: Which card is it exactly?17:56
siavoshkchard to answer17:56
siavoshkcit is one with internal tuner which is able to capture video17:57
siavoshkc???? Radeon 128 ????17:57
penguin42I don't think you have much choice with those17:58
penguin42I don't think AMD have supported those in the closed drivers for ages17:58
siavoshkcI dont want amd drivers17:59
siavoshkcI want freex86(?)17:59
penguin42that should be installed by default17:59
bekkssiavoshkc: Those drivers are in use by default.18:00
siavoshkcCan I disable desktop effects?18:01
siavoshkcIt is that slow that I have a hard time opening terminal18:02
penguin42siavoshkc: With a card like that I'd use a different desktop; xfwm should work fine on it18:02
siavoshkcWhat is a different desktop?18:23
siavoshkcyou mean other than gnome?18:23
penguin42yes18:25
siavoshkcit will be another nightmare18:30
penguin42possibly, but Gnome3 or unity aren't going to work well on an old card18:31
siavoshkcthe problem is that I am not sure if the problem is the driver18:32
siavoshkcit can be something else18:32
penguin42siavoshkc: Gnome3 will be trying to do OpenGL stuff, and probably falling back to using llvm to do it - it's going to be slow18:33
siavoshkcsystem has free memory and it is athlon xp 2000018:36
penguin42very interesting, but I've told you your choices18:36
siavoshkchow can I be sure that falling back is happening?18:38

jjdjdjdDocumentation  When you find a solution to a problem, you can help others by writing about your experience. Some of the most constructive ways to get involved in the Ubuntu documentation community might be:      Take notes as you puzzle through a problem. If documentation already exists, you can extend or improve it. If it doesn’t, go ahead and add a page in the help wiki, and write up the answer making it available to everyone.20:20
