c2tarunHi01:46
c2tarunshould I install Kubuntu 12.04 or wait for 14.04? My laptop configuration is 3GB RAM 1GB ATI 5xxx graphic card. I heard that KDE in 14.04 is lighter and faster than KDE in 12.0401:47

BluesKajHowdy folks10:51
yossarianukis kde 4.13 still looking like its going to used for 14.04 ?11:09
Riddellyossarianuk: yes I'm packaging it now11:28
yossarianukcool !11:29
yossarianuktheregister mentioned the wrong version yesterday,,,,11:29
Riddellshrug, tabloid rag :)11:30
yossarianuk4.12 is very nice (using it in kubuntu+arch) 4.13 i'm sure will be that bit better......11:32
BluesKajyossarianuk, newer isn't always better in my experience :)11:34
yossarianukBluesKaj: since kde 4.0 every version has been better than the last.11:34
yossarianukjust that bit more refined.11:35
BluesKajfrankly yossarianuk I haven't noticed a lot of difference for many versions now, but i'm an ordinary user11:37
* monkeyjuice would not call BluesKaj ordinary ;)11:38
yossarianukwell in the 4.0 - 4.2 there were a ton of stability fixes.11:38
yossarianuksince then just little usability improvements - kin perormance improvements in 4.10.11:40
yossarianuki.e11:40
yossarianukhttp://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2012/09/performance-improvements-in-kwin-4-9-2-and-4-10/11:40
yossarianuk*kwin*11:40
yossarianukhence - every version being better than previous.11:40
yossarianukopensource should work that way imo.... personally I would like kubuntu's desktop to be rolling release (on a stable core.)11:41
BluesKajthat's being considered, or was discussed for a while11:42
yossarianukWell I have arch for that I guess.11:47
ikoniaisn't that what the PPA is ?11:48
ikoniathe same kubuntu release + later desktop ?11:48
BluesKajarch didn't do much for me despite all the talk about how great it is11:49
yossarianukBluesKaj: its just a way to have the latest software all the time.11:54
yossarianukI found it more stable (and newer packages) than Debian sid...11:54
BluesKajyossarianuk, that's fine , if you feel the need :)11:55
yossarianukWhen you hear about some new existing package in the opensource world you normally can access that package the same day - with debian yo may have to wait 3 - 6 years.11:55
yossarianukkubuntu 6 - 12 month.11:55
yossarianukwith arch its the same night....11:56
yossarianukbut anyway i guess that's offtopic...11:57
yossarianukalthough sometimes its actually easier to keep an opensource package up to date on windows than it is on some distros (ubuntu/kubuntu included.) and that is wrong...12:00
yossarianuk(not that I use windows)12:00
douglmorning BluesKaj you around?12:05
BluesKajwindows has it's uses, and virtualbox works well on this laptop at least because of it's larger memory and cpu. My older desktop can barely handle windows 7 on partition , let alone in a vm.12:06
BluesKajhey dougl, what's shakin'12:07
lordievaderAh dougl, a reply to the problem you had yesterday: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/setting-up-an-network-interfaces-file/12:09
douglHey BluesKaj was looking to config 14.04 with static ip but was not asking my question properly and in the wrong channel etc - was wondering if you had new perspective...12:09
lordievaderdougl: See ^for setting up a static ip.12:10
dougland everything that is suggested and tried does not work12:11
dougllordievader, when I do that nothing works12:12
lordievaderdougl: That is strange. It never failed for me.12:12
lordievaderdougl: Do you get errors?12:12
douglno12:13
douglno errors12:14
lordievaderdougl: Can you ping your gateway after you've set a static ip?12:15
dougllordievader, sec...12:15
BluesKajdougl, this the method I used, it's abit dated , but when you get to the /etc/resolv.conf settings the path changes to /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base, that\s where the nameserver and gateway settings need to be located12:17
BluesKajhttp://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-ubuntu-linux-convert-dhcp-network-configuration-to-static-ip-configuration.html12:17
BluesKajdougl, another point, get rid of NM and it's config file or you'll have problems , unless there's a workaround I'm unaware of12:21
douglBluesKaj, err ok...12:22
dougllordievader, http://paste.ubuntu.com/7073200/ is my interfaces file can you take a peek for me please?/12:22
BluesKajNM tries to overwrite resolv.conf12:22
douglBluesKaj, and I don't know how to start the network after that so I reinstalled 14.04 for the 5th time to fix it.12:23
douglapparently there is supposed to be some NM gui but I cannot find it...12:24
lordievaderdougl: I usually define a network and a broadcast address too.12:25
lordievaderdougl: Can you ping the gateway?12:25
BluesKajdougl, sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart12:26
douglI did not restart yet lordievader can you tell me how to define a network and add a broadcast address?12:26
dougllordievader, nm12:27
lordievaderdougl: This is how I've defined one of my bridge nics: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7073229/12:28
BluesKajI'd like to stay, but I have to go out for a few hrs ... BBL12:29
dougllater thanks12:30
lordievaderdougl: Anyhow can you ping your gateway?12:30
douglhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/7073234/12:31
douglthere is my interfaces = does it look ok... pinging now12:31
douglchecjking12:31
dougllordievader, saved that file and yes I can ping my gateway with but my ip has not changed12:33
lordievaderdougl: Ok, run the command BluesKaj gave you.12:33
douglsudo /etc/init.d/networking restart12:34
douglERROR: Calling a sysvinit script on a system using upstart isn't supported. Please use the 'service' command instead.12:34
dougland this is where I reinstalled12:35
douglafter doing it oldschool12:35
lordievaderdougl: sudo service networking restart12:37
douglSo lordievader I assume this is/was step one of 500 to get a static ip and no I cannot ping the gateway12:44
lordievaderdougl: Hmm, interesting, can you post the output of "sudo route12:44
lordievader""12:44
douglno12:44
douglI have no access to the machine now there is not network12:45
lordievaderdougl: You where doing this remotely? Ai. That is usually not a good idea.12:45
dougljust downstairs12:46
douglbut regardless without  a network connection I doubt if I could post the output of sudo route12:47
lordievaderHmm true. But it would tell you/me if there is a route to the gateway.12:48
douglok will check12:48
douglkernel routing table appears to be empty but I have never seen any other so would not really know12:50
lordievaderdougl: Completely empty is strange.12:51
douglso I ask again - is it possible to manually config ip on 14.04 without the manned mission to mars?12:52
lordievaderdougl: Anyhow in your case it is probably "sudo route add -net 192.168.0.0/24 gw 192.168.0.1 dev eth0"12:53
douglI think this12:53
lordievaderdougl: Usually it is no more than editing /etc/network/interfaces. That has worked for me, in Trusty too.12:53
dougllordievader, that survives a boot?12:53
lordievaderdougl: Yes.12:54
lordievaderI'm not really sure why it doesn't work in your case.12:54
dougllordievader, only cuz I been waiting for this since 12.0412:56
douglanyway that command did not work errors = ...12:57
douglnetwork is unreachable12:57
lordievaderdougl: Do you have an entry in the routing table for the gateway and the network?12:57
douglwhat routing table?12:58
lordievaderdougl: sudo route12:59
douglempty13:00
lordievaderdougl: Still?13:00
douglstill13:01
lordievaderdougl: Hmm, that is strange. Sadly I don't have time right now to dig deeper into it on how to solve it. But I do expect that if the routing table is fixed the problem is gone. (It might even be that a reboot will work here).13:03
douglreboot = nothing ...13:03
lordievaderdougl: Really strange that the routing table isn't populated.13:04
douglno network13:04
douglcant populate when I have no network13:05
douglnothing that need the network can be done without the network13:05
lordievaderAs I understand it, the routing table (sudo route) is populated with the info from either dhcp or from /etc/network/interfaces.13:08
douglLOL - as I understand it static ip took 15 minutes 10 years ago... now it takes hours, progress :)13:10

ikoniacheck if they are populated to start with ?13:36
douglikonia, where do I do that?13:38
ikoniahow did you set your network card up, what tool did you use ?13:40
douglthe networkish looking thing in the sys tray13:41
pietro10Hi. On a fresh install, when my laptop wakes up from sleep, X11 crashes in such a way that if it does restart, KDE startup freezes on login and I have to reboot to get back in. Is there a way I can diagnose this?13:41
douglikonia, the networkish looking thing in the sys tray13:42
ikoniadougl: that should have set the dns servers up, in that tool are the dns servers populated ?13:43
douglthe ones I put in there yes13:43
ikoniaok, so can you use them ?13:43
douglyes13:44
douglno cannot use them see them i THOT u asked lol13:45
ikoniasorry I'll clarify13:45
ikonia"can you use them to do ip->name resolution or name->ip resolution"13:46
douglikonia, for what ever reason it needed a reboot and all is find now... must have had the 14.04 box too close to the windows machine - lol13:48

gomiboyrosco_y: if by "native" you mean the proprietary nvidia drivers, there is no problem: install them, reboot and test. Remove them and you are back to the default. Btw nvidia binary drivers always work (if you have a GPU not older than 10 years or so, that is :)22:45
