[09:42] Zorky, do the fstab and tune2fs changes [09:43] Kamuela, when I say {something_here}, I mean, without the {} [09:43] Kamuela, dmesg |grep 'i915.i915_enable_rc6=1' [09:44] iptable: sorry about that misunderstanding, same no return there though [09:44] Kamuela, well, you didn't boot with those parameters. [09:45] iptable: e brought me to a grub editing interface. it's possible i didn't understand the script and added those values to the wrong part? [09:45] iptable: i added it to the end, beyond any of the if/fi blocks and after initrd [09:45] Kamuela, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters [09:45] Kamuela, as I have stated, add them to the line that starts with "linux" or "kernel" [09:45] iptable: lets see if this fixed it [09:46] Kamuela, you effectively ignored part of my instructions actually :D [09:47] iptable: http://imgur.com/4KqcgL8 [09:47] thats what happends [09:47] iptable: effectively i did, so after quiet and splash this time. i'll brb again [09:47] Zorky, barely looks random really. Tried uninstalling the "uncomplicated firewall"? whatever that is... [09:47] iptable: it's random. simetimes it's a different service [09:48] Zorky, looks like your fsck passes though, no issues there. Still, it looks like an issue with firewall at this time. DID you try to check the logs when it manages to boot? [09:48] Zorky, /var/log/* tbh [09:49] iptable: after reboot it did this http://imgur.com/oYDLAax [09:49] sometimes it's the failsafe boot delay [09:49] Zorky, reboot, get it to finally accidentally boot and check logs, really. they 99.999% of the time have the issue written out [09:50] what log file? now it's the bridge socket events into upstart that failed.. [09:51] Zorky, all of them. check /var/log/syslog, /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/this_one_looks_interesting [09:51] so you want me to check the log files of EVERY single service that boots with the os? [09:51] have you any idea on how many that is? [09:51] Zorky, uhm, yes. [09:52] Zorky, I normally grep -iPr 'error|warning|panic' /var/log/* to begin with [09:53] Zorky, and if nothing found, I tail the last few lines of all log files I feel may be relevant. following failure of that, it's time to actually spend 30 minutes troubleshooting by tailing the last 100 lines or so of all the logs files [09:53] Zorky, another way is to disable quiet and splash (if enabled) from the boot parameters and see all the beautiful boot lines scroll by until hang. that might display something more [09:54] iptable: yep dmesg showed it got injected, i don't think it solved the problem unfortunately :\ [09:54] hi [09:54] iptable did the updates, still the same issue [09:55] Zorky, also, this looks relevant http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/16526-Anyone-else-seen-this-Ubuntu-12-04-LTS-64bit-KVM-install-hangs-late-boot-weird [09:55] is someone using ubumirror ? [09:55] llutz, hi [09:55] because i got an insane amount of errors printed [09:55] Zorky, got that many errors? :D ok, pastebinit and also look at the link I sent you just now [09:56] Kamuela, well then this is not your solution then I'm afraid [09:56] llutz, i have installed ubuntu 13.10 on new HDD recently and installed aptoncd. what can i do to take required packages to home with no internet [09:56] Evy, what version of ubuntu? [09:56] 13.10 [09:56] 32bit [09:56] iptable: thanks for the help. i guess i'm still holding out for 13.10 hd4600 support [09:56] Evy, that *should* already work. Tried default movie player on ubuntu as opposed to VLC for the sake of it? [09:57] hi all, i have installed ubuntu 13.10 on new HDD recently and installed aptoncd. what can i do to take required packages to home with no internet [09:57] Kamuela, try 14.04, see if it resolves the issues. You can try beta for the test. [09:57] iptables : Videos requires to install plugins to support the following multimedia feature: DVD source [09:57] creating using aptonCD gave me one iso file [09:58] Evy, oh, you don't have DVD playback installed at all? [09:58] Evy, do any actual DVD movies play? [09:58] Evy, also, VLC has a tab somewhere to show you log, what error does that spit out? [09:59] iptable: http://pastebin.com/BNFyLgbP [09:59] iptable : where is the log? [09:59] iptable: how would I be able to test it with something like a dist-upgrade [09:59] Kamuela, you wouldn't. normally, to JUST test, you would install it on a USB drive you can wipe [09:59] Kamuela, or run a full reinstall of the OS [10:00] iptable: basically the video working would be as simple as me making a bootable usb, booting into it, and seeing if video worked as i expected by default? [10:00] Evy, Tools->messages in VLC [10:00] hi all, i have installed ubuntu 13.10 on new HDD recently and installed aptoncd. what can i do to take required packages to home with no internet and no aptoncd [10:00] ? [10:01] Evy, you need something like that: sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly mpg123 *something like that* [10:02] Kamuela, you would need to boot from a bootable "live" usb/cd, click on install and install to another USB drive. Then boot the installed version from the USB drive and you can install drivers there. you CANNOT install video drivers on liveUSB, even with persistance mode [10:03] iptable: ok, it's more of a nuisance that i have to deal with so i suppose i can continue dealing with it [10:04] Zorky, 1. see the output of kern.log - looks like a panic based on GPU (the GPU being emulated). 2. look at the link I did send you, looks relevant. [10:04] iptable: im trying to do that change on grub so see if that changes anything [10:04] iptable : Google say : try sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras [10:05] hi all, i have installed ubuntu 13.10 on new HDD recently and installed aptoncd. what can i do to take required packages to home with no internet and no aptoncd? [10:06] iptable: i somehow broke grub but it still booted [10:06] guys [10:06] how can i whisp to user in channel [10:07] Evy, yes, I did tell you to do that, did you? [10:07] Zorky, as in now it actually boots? [10:07] Zorky, that would be the graphics card incompatibility with the kernel in question of the VM [10:07] any help? [10:08] junzi, how abtou PM them (private message)? [10:08] junzi, /query nicknamehere [10:08] iptable: hmm there is no gfx card, except the CPU one. it's being run on a blade server [10:08] iptableö /query ıs ıt ok? [10:09] Zorky, that's irrelevant. The KVM is emulating some sort of GPU [10:09] iptableö /query [10:09] junzi, like you would: /query iptable [10:09] iptable: does it have something to do with VNC display? [10:09] junzi, a new window opens and you can type in it to that person [10:09] hi guys.. tryong to follow the guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Hamachi... but when i try run "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/haguichi " i get a command not found... any help please [10:10] lo!~alumno@40.Red-88-1-167.dynamicIP.rima-tde.net [10:10] Zorky, well, the only way to get VNC display to work is for KVM to first emulate some kind of GPU, yes. It's the graphics card that KVM is emulating that ubuntu 12.04 kernel not likey ;) [10:10] Grr, stupid paste buffer [10:10] iptable, /query [10:10] portable external drive and USB drive can't be accessed from GUI on ubuntu 13.10.it flashed to appear and gone [10:10] buggy ubuntu 13.10 [10:10] BlackDeath, you don't have full apt installed? that's interesting. [10:11] iptable: how do i install full apt? [10:11] iptable : yea still does not work [10:11] iptable: hmm i wonder if i remove the display for the vm in proxmox and press start. and it boots as it should. since it's a terminal based OS there is no need for a display after install [10:11] Zorky, up to you to determine and test [10:12] now it says error: no suitable video mode found. then it hangs there for 30 seconds and proceeds to boot [10:13] Zorky, definitely on the right track then. GPU emulation is the reason. Video modes for "Video Default" can be cirrus, QXL, VGA, VMVGA, Xen. Or you could try to find out how to ignore that error altogether. But anyways, issue located :) [10:14] iptable : nomaly working dvd don't any more [10:14] BlackDeath, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13018626/add-apt-repository-not-found [10:14] Evy, that sentence got me lost. so do any DVD movies (proper DVD movies) play at all? [10:15] iptable dvd that normaly working is not working anymore, [10:16] Evy, so all DVDs are consistently broken ok. Can you please put in a DVD that's data, not movie and try to read file? [10:20] cx1964, http://www.smbc-comics.com/?id=2388 :D [10:21] cx1964, then use mtp I guess ;) On ubuntu 14.04 is "just works". on older ubuntu, I had to use 3rd-party tools. [10:22] cx1964, one thing to keep in mind: your screen needs to be unlocked for mtp to be available via USB to your PC, so unlock the screen before plugging it in [10:22] I use Ubuntu 12.04 [10:22] cx1964, that will be painful then. === dean|away is now known as dean [10:23] cx1964, there is mtpfs and suchlikes you will have to manually experiment with. but do remember to unblock screen before each try. it is very important or MTP access will not be granted by phone [10:24] when 14.04 is released in april I will upgrade. But is it possible for now to connect to my samsung galaxy xcover2? [10:24] Hello! [10:24] cx1964, you best solution is to use "Ex File Explorer" on the phone and do it via FTP/scp/other [10:24] I can't log in to my Ubuntu. [10:24] cx1964, wireless-like ;) [10:24] I just updated it to 13.10 [10:24] After I log in, it just shows me this blank screen. [10:25] someHuman, so you can login, but end up with a blank screen? [10:26] someHuman, as in: press ctrl+alt+f1, login to console, type in: sudo apt-get install fglrx [10:26] Then? [10:27] someHuman, Then? [10:27] iptable : rebooted [10:27] then reboot ;o [10:27] That's it? [10:27] someHuman, then reboot once you done that. [10:27] Ok [10:27] Thanks! [10:27] someHuman, to reboot: sudo shutdown -r now [10:27] Ok ok [10:27] Evy, works? [10:27] iptable: or, just type 'reboot' ;\ [10:28] toy story works, grey's anatomy s4 does not [10:29] iptable i think i had to use classic media player to get it working in windows 7 [10:30] Humbedooh, nah, that's soooooo uncool :D [10:30] iptable: pfft, faster to type! [10:31] Evy, is tha particular DVD a DVD or bluray? [10:31] dvd [10:31] Humbedooh, I'm old-school, where we had to 'alias reboot=shutdown -r now' to do that [10:31] Evy, looks like one of those weird encryptions that just won't work on ubuntu. [10:31] Evy, there is a very limited amount of DVDs that will jsut refuse to decode. Is it the same region as the DVD drive? [10:31] iptable : maybe wine that app? [10:32] yes it works in windows [10:32] I have already installed the fglrx [10:32] Still the same. Note that movie industry doesn't like linux due to "hax0rs" lol :D [10:35] ok [10:36] Evy, google, install and run handbrake. It is a riping tool, but for your purpose you could run it to see if it can scan and see the titles on that DVD. handbrake is quite good with that. [10:36] do you know how to sync ipods in ubunt? However, it's possible that new technologies will come along and your system would eventually not be able to use it ... but that's likely not a concern for years. [12:33] Guest67566: or you can uncomment the lines for the source in /etc/apt/sources.list [12:34] Guest67566: there are lots of guides online on how to do this [12:34] ptbsare: Note that I recently upgraded distros from 12.04.4 to 12.10 to 13.10 and the auto-upgrade distribution upgrade stuff worked fine. [21:26] mekon: if i had all the info from when i was connected is there a way to connect it? [21:26] Aqui1a: What I need you to do is to boot into ubuntu from the USB. It will give you the option to "Run Live". You need to run a live version of ubuntu that is living on your USB stick. [21:26] Anyone have an idea of how to get a newer libpci and/or hwloc on an older lucid install? [21:26] ilhami: Yes it is. It is advisable not to do so. [21:26] ilhami, I think that's essentially what ubuntu server is [21:26] ilhami: apt-get install kde-full, i use server as desktop [21:26] regular ubuntu sans gui. [21:27] thats how it was described to me anyway [21:27] david1: Correct [21:27] Joe_knock why isnt it a good idea? [21:27] Joe_Knock, I can't get into the USB though. I don't have any option to run a live version of Ubuntu. I get the error message as soon as I choose to boot from USB. [21:27] Koolcid: normally its very easy for example dhclient eth0 [21:27] ilhami: Unless you are using the server for personal/home use on your own hardware, having a GUI on a remote server will waste resources. [21:28] Aqui1a: Although we could try to resolve the issue through using the USB, do you have a CD/DVD disk? [21:28] Joe_knock I am going to make a server from my own old laptop [21:28] setup* [21:28] and I heard good things about Ubuntu Server [21:28] ilhami: You don't really need a GUI for a server. [21:29] but since I am not a pro at Linux yet I would like a GUI to support me [21:29] Joe_Knock, Sadly not! I don't even have a CD/DVD burner. [21:29] ilhami: is true, i have 5 ubuntu server [21:29] Aqui1a: Okay, it looks like we need to resolve the issue with the USB then. I am using openbox to free up ram for gaming, but volume control buttons wont work [21:32] Aqui1a: Do you still have an OS that works? Or is the PC void of any OS now? [21:33] david1: Are you looking for a command to control the volume? [21:33] Joe_Knock, I'm on the very PC I'm having trouble with right now. I was attempting to create a dual-boot. I also have a laptop in front of me. [21:33] ilhami that is a tough question to answer. One that doesn't matter for a home server [21:34] Aqui1a: You could use your laptop with an OS (like winXP/7) to run the "Live version" of Ubuntu. [21:35] I have ubuntu installed on it [21:35] never mind, find it [21:35] alsamixer. :P [21:35] everything is much better [21:35] Joe_knock it's for a school project [21:35] we need to stress the server [21:35] and test it [21:36] Joe_Knock, how would running a live version of Ubuntu on my laptop help me install Ubuntu on my PC? I'm absolutely clueless! haha [21:37] Aqui1a: It is a gentle process towards getting to the final solution :) When running the live version, you will be able to update grub2 (which may or may not be causing the problems) and once grub2 is updated, you can then install ubuntu onto the dualboot system :) [21:37] I am guessing from lack of responses that no one currently watching here has ideas about my shell/telnet issue -- [21:38] ilhami: Perhaps you should try this channel for server related matters: #ubuntu-server [21:38] Joe_knock thanks [21:38] Joe_Knock, I think I understand. So, by running this USB in the live version, I can update files on the USB itself while its in use? [21:38] If I move focus away from a shell window with a telnet session running in it -- if I get back to it soon enough it's fine, but if I work in other windows for about 3+ minutes the telnet session gets stranded. This is new, it never used to happen.
