DJonesbigcalm: Thanks, I think its changed for 14.04, wasn't sure whether the text was still visible11:21
MooDoodavmor2: yeah ok thanks :) nothing special, you?11:21
DJonesIt was prompted by somebody suggesting that the text for both buttons wasn't visible until you hovered the mouse over them, in which case, how would a touchscreen user know what each button did before pressing it (assuming the button icon wasn't obvious enough)11:22
popeyDJones: yes, i can read the text11:24
DJonespopey: Thanks, to me it seems obvious anyway from the buttons, but somebody in +1 thought it might be a problem on a touchscreen machine unless they also used the mouse11:25

ali1234AlanBell: supposing i want to have things in the middle of the page, and things around the edge of the page, all coming from the same custom database table. then what? how do i make a component and a module share the same model?12:08
davmor2ali1234: http://www.dart-creations.com/joomla/joomla-tutorials/the-difference-between-modules-and-components.html how about that instead12:09
ali1234davmor2: nope, that also doesn't answer my question12:09
ali1234it seems that i need to functionality of both a component (because i need a custom database model) and modules (because i want to present the DB data across multiple existing pages)12:10
ali1234in wordpress this is all done in one plugin12:10
ali1234i don't understand why it is split in joomla12:10
ali1234or can i make modules in a component?12:10
AlanBellali1234: have a look at modules/mod_articles_category/helper.php12:12
AlanBellit includes the model from the associated component12:13
AlanBellcom_content in this instance, but yours would be different12:13
ali1234so going through a model is mandatory to make this work?12:14
AlanBellerm, nothing is mandatory, you can hit the tables directly if you want to, but going through a model in the component is probably the right way to do it12:15
ali1234but if i hit the db direct in the component, then i'll have to copy paste the db code into the module?12:15
AlanBellor you hit the component with the module and the component hits the tables, but yeah, sounds about right12:17
ali1234all the documentation is terrible12:18
ali1234here is a direct quote from the developer docs: "I don't know. This is something that the gurus must answer. Where does  the display function come from? Again, I don't know. Hope that someone  else can help here. "12:19
ali1234that's not a comment. that's just written in the middle of a page that is supposed to explain how components work12:19
AlanBellheh yes12:22

ali1234also why is everything JControllLegacy?12:23
ali1234why do the docs tell you to use Legacy stuff? where are the docs for the not-Legacy stuff?12:23
AlanBellthere was a big refactoring, to make it a lot more modern and sensible and less like old mambo12:24

ali1234yeah, our current site is wordpress. the problem is that the visual design is really poor. so we got someone in to improve it and he's like "oh yeah, just switch to joomla"12:57
ali1234so we paid $30 or w/e for a template12:58
ali1234this is delivered as a zip file with a full joomla installation and the template that you just unzip12:58
ali1234it seems to be delivered this way because setting up joomla from scratch is impossible12:59

BigRedSMartijnVdS: ah. you've just reminded me of the last time I had this rant in here :)13:34
dwatkinsThat might be confusing for a company with offices in London and Edinburgh, though, BigRedS - I'd say country-specific would be best (for the company's head office), if it were ISO 3166-compliant...13:34
BigRedSbut country-specific breaks when a company has offices in paris and london13:35
dwatkinsThis would confuse americans, of course, as they'd all have to use .us13:35

dwatkinsI guess you can see a thread with a lot of comments on it in mose news clients, though.13:46
ali1234the voting doesn't even do much13:47
ali1234mainly the way threading works, the way you can't post images, and the way everyone is pseudonymous are what make it like usenet13:48

popeyit was a sketch on a programme about 20 years ago14:14
popeythere were different hobbies each week with "weak lemon drink" featuring each time14:15
bigcalmWell that was a weird clip14:19
foobarrydid anyone watch blue jam?14:20
foobarryor listen (was it a radio show?)14:20
ali1234no, because blue jam was a radio show :P14:20
foobarrythere's a song i like that appears to be a random selection of quotes from it14:20

popey</brum>14:55
* aquarius is having computer problems :(14:55
popeyuhoh14:55
aquariusmachine was throwing HDD errors, so the people sent me a new SSD.14:56
aquariushave put it in; booted machine from USB14:56
popeywhat kind of hdd errors?14:56
popeyexactly14:56
* popey bets money it's not the SSD but the SATA cable at fault.14:56
aquariusSo far: hung during USB "ubuntu . . . . ." boot screen needing powercycle; booted to USB desktop and hung there; hung again14:57
aquariusscreen flickering to black and back again while in USB desktop14:57
aquariusI don't think it's the sata cable because the machine's locking up while I'm booted from USB, and flickering the screen on and off; I haven't done anything with the SSD yet14:57
popeyheh, okay ☻14:57
popeybut keep that in reserve for "I told you so" later..14:58
popeywhat video card does it have?14:58
popeyonboard intel or a proper one?14:58
aquarius(so I probably shouldn't have complained about that to them since now I think it's not the problem... but whatever the problem was was exhibiting itself as SSD errors (and black flickering) because syslog was full of ssd errors14:58
aquariusonboard intel.14:58
jussiaquarius: did you have to send the old one back?14:58
aquariusmachine just hung again at ubuntu logo during usb boot :(14:58
aquariusjussi, yes :(14:59
popeywhat version of Ubuntu?14:59
jussidoh14:59
aquariuspopey, 13.1014:59
popeywhat CPU?14:59
aquariusjussi, yeah, yeah, I know14:59
aquariuspopey, haswell i514:59
popeymemtest?15:00
aquariusand again, hung in boot :(15:00
aquariusmaybe it's memory, yeah15:00
aquariusdoes the usb startup disk have memtest/15:00
aquariusdoes the usb startup disk have memtest?15:00
popeyrun memtest as long as you can, yeah, i think it does15:00
aquariusthe problem exhibits itself basically every time15:00
popeyat the same point or random points?15:01
aquariusrandom points15:01
popeyright, memtest first then15:01
popeyeliminate that15:01
aquariussometimes it fails in usb boot15:01
aquariussometimes it gets to the usb desktop and locks up15:01
aquariusbefore I sent the SSD back it booted OK to real Ubuntu but kept throwing SSD errors in syslog15:02
aquarius(hence me thinking that the problem was the SSD)15:02
aquariusnow running memtest15:02
popeytsk. should have come here and asked and I'd have told you to change the cable ㋛15:02
* popey prepares invoice15:03
aquariusI do not believe that the cable can be the problem15:03
popeyi thought that15:03
aquariuswell, maybe that's the problem and there's another problem15:03
popeyi was wrong15:03
davmor2aquarius: it can15:03
MartijnVdSaquarius: You could try underclocking (or overvolting but that's worse, warranty-wise) the RAM or CPU? That can stabilize it somehow (I have an i7, slightly overclocked, but that only works because I also slightly overvolt).15:03
popeybut that could be one of multiple problems15:03
popey*this* is *exactly* why I never build computers any more.15:03
popeythis stupid shit happens every single time15:03
aquariuswhat, having a bad SSD cable might make it hang when booting from USB without touching the SSD?15:04
aquariuspopey, this is why I didn't build it!15:04
popeyyes, it has to initialise the drive15:04
aquariuspopey, and apparently having some pros build it didn't bloody help15:04
popeyeven if you dont touch it, it gets powered up15:04
MartijnVdSaquarius: Bad cables anywhere can mess up the entire system stability15:04
popeyhah, indeed15:04
aquariusam properly sad.15:04
MartijnVdSaquarius: have you asked the pros :)15:04
popeyI can imagine ☹15:04
popeyMartijnVdS: he just did15:04
MartijnVdSpopey: the pros who built the machine in the first place, I mean15:04
popey:D I know silly ☻15:05
aquariusMartijnVdS, I explained to them that the SSD was throwing errors and, no questions asked, they sent me out a new SSD on 24-hour turnaround.15:05
popeydo you recall the errors?15:05
aquariusit is not clear to me what else I can ask them -- "it fails in lots of weird ways" is not useful15:05
popeyi.e. did you copy/paste them somewhere?15:05
aquariuspopey, I didn't.15:06
aquariusI searched for them at the time, and found nothing hugely indicative.15:06
popeyyour browser history?15:07
=== ball is now known as Guest97415

aquariuspopey, am looking in browser history ow15:07
aquariusnow15:07
popeyk15:07
aquariuschrome is only showing me it for today15:07
davmor2aquarius: do you have a esata lead and socket on your laptop at all?15:08
aquariusso installing an extension which apparently does better15:08
aquariusyak: skaved15:08
ali1234well there is an easy way to test15:08
popeyscroll down?15:08
aquariuspopey, there's "Older>"15:08
ali1234remove ssd, try to boot usb stick15:08
aquariusbut it won't do back older than that15:08
popeyssd is in post15:08
aquariusali1234, yeah, I'll try that once memtest has run for a bit15:08
ali1234i mean boot it with no fixed disk at all15:08
ali1234btw did you get your network working the other day?15:09
aquariuswould having a bad sata cable which *isn't connected to a disk* be a problem?15:09
popeyhow much ram does it have?15:09
ali1234highly unlikely15:09
popeynot really no15:09
aquariusali1234, not really, no. The maverick laptop I was working on got rebooted and did not come back up -- it hangs with a black screen15:09
aquariusali1234, and then using it as a wifi proxy for the main computer stopped being a big issue once the main computer stopped working itself15:10
aquariusali1234, that's why I vanished: rebooted, and the machine didn't come back up15:10
aquariusthis has been the worst week ever for computers.15:10
foobarryapart from that time somebody set off a EMP cannon from space15:11
aquariusOh. I haven't got any history in chrome for yesterday. Presumably because it didn't get shut down right. Fantastic,15:11
aquariusthanks, chrome. throme.15:11
foobarryaquarius: killall chrome15:12
popeythat seems unwise15:12
aquariusfoobarry, I don't see how that will recover a bunch of history which is already lost.15:13
foobarryi had that problem15:13
aquariusMoreover, having killed chrome is what makes it lose the history, I think.15:13
foobarryit had started up without using my normal profile15:13
foobarryso close chrome and killall the background stuffs15:13
foobarryand ps -ef | grep chrome to make sure15:13
foobarrythen start it15:13
aquariusfoobarry, nah, it's using my correct profile. I check that a lot, because I have multiple profiles.15:14
=== Guest97415 is now known as lopta
aquariusnothing from memtest thus far, although obviously it's only been running 15 minutes.15:15
aquariushowever, a thing which fails every boot in some way would, one would think, show up in memtest relatively quickly?15:15
mappshow long does a memtest take?15:17
aquariusmapps, ideally you'd leave it running for 24-48 hours15:17
daftykinsdepends on system spec and amount of RAM15:17
daftykins30 mins + really for a single pass15:18
aquariushowever, I don't have that long.15:18
aquariusI'll leave it to do one full pass, then after that I'll try ali1234's suggestion of disconnecting the sata cable from the ssd and booting again15:18
aquariusI shall be properly, lividly cross if there wasn't actually a problem with the SSD and I have to set everything up again for no reason15:18
aquariusbut at least that'll solve the problem, if it does15:19
davmor2aquarius: can you remove the ssd from your laptop?  if so try putting that into the pc :)  ie take a known functioning ssd put it in a known non-functioning device, that should rule out the ssd as the issue15:19
jussiaquarius: and you are sure of the integrity of the USB?15:19
=== lopta is now known as Guest35486
aquariusdavmor2, the laptop doesn't have a standard ssd.15:20
aquariusjussi, it checked itself and came out OK. Moreover, I was having these problems when booted from the previous SSD with no USB included.15:20
jussiahh fair enough15:20
=== Guest35486 is now known as ball_
davmor2aquarius: and does it have an esata port? and do you have a lead?  Ie can the laptop be used to see the ssd from the pc15:20
aquariusdavmor2, I don't think it has an esata port, whatever one of those is15:21
aquariusand I doubt very much whether I have a lead for that anyway15:21
davmor2aquarius: :(15:21
mappswow really aquarius 24-48hrs damn15:21
aquariusmapps, memory errors are *normally* rare and intermittent. So they might not show up in a half-hour run.15:22

davmor2aquarius: what version of ubuntu, what arch, what chipset, what gfx16:14
aquariusdavmor2, 13.10, amd64, intel graphics.16:14
aquariusI don't know models for the chipset and graphics because I can't boot the machine! If you tell me how to find them I can provide them.16:15
davmor2aquarius: if it's a uefi system on the motherbopard  in bios compatibilty mode it should tell you in there16:16
aquariusdavmor2, in the bios boot thing/16:16
aquarius?16:16
aquariusI am not booting in uefi mode16:16
aquariusI'm using bios compatibility mode16:16
davmor2aquarius: yeah that doesn't matter it will still be uefi so should still give you the info you want, in theory16:17
aquariusok, 25 minutes to download the trusty daily iso, so I'll try other stuff until then16:17
aquariusdavmor2, can't see anything in the bios stuff about the graphics. Chip is Intel i5-4670 @ 3.40GHz16:19
davmor2aquarius: so mine on the info page lists cpu/memory/hdd type/cd-dvd etc16:19
davmor2aquarius: you're right about the gfx though I thought it was covered though :(16:20
davmor2aquarius: out of interest does all the memory show up in the info page?16:21
aquariusYes16:21

davmor2aquarius: how are you conect the monitor to the pc?16:21
aquariushdmi16:21
davmor2aquarius: can you try a different lead?16:22

aquariusum.16:23
aquariusprobably.16:23
davmor2aquarius: dvi or whatevery it is16:23
aquariuswill have to dig up a dvi lead16:23
aquariusI can't see how that'd hang the kernel either, but we'll see16:24
davmor2aquarius: the hdmi is a kernel driver so if that is at fault that would hang16:24
davmor2aquarius: I would doubt it is at fault but if we rule out as much as possible now then it lowers down things to look at  latter16:25
aquariustrue16:25
aquariusI'll try the trusty CD in about 15 minutes once it's downloaded16:25
aquariusif that doesn't work I'll experiment16:26
aquariusbut it worked fine for three weeks using hdmi :(16:26

daftykinsas dumb as that question sounds given presence of a cable16:58
daftykins:D16:58
aquariusdaftykins, desktop16:59
bigcalmDo you have a spare machine you can whip the sata cable out of?16:59
aquariusno.16:59
bigcalmTo Maplin!16:59
daftykinsaquarius: worth trying a different port or just wiggling the cable sometimes16:59
aquariusdaftykins, it is in a different port already; I tried that16:59
aquariusOK. So: sata errors, which we think is the sata cable.17:00
daftykinsah ok17:00
bigcalmIt's a possibility. If a change of cable doesn't fix it, then it might be the mobo17:00
daftykinsthere's no other SATA device in the system? 0o17:00
aquariusGraphic glitches -- screen goes black for a second, occasional coloured lines appearing... do we think that's the sata cable too?17:00
aquariusdaftykins, nope. I don't need more than one drive; that's what the network is for :)17:00
bigcalmUnlikely. Is it onboard graphics or from a PCI/AGP card?17:01
aquariusdavmor2, how would I diagnose any sort of software problem which might be causing the graphic glitches?17:01
aquariusbigcalm, onboard17:01
bigcalmaquarius: had the mobo for long? It doesn't sound healthy17:01
aquariusbigcalm, a month.17:01
popeycan you photo/film the graphic glitches pls?17:02
popeythey may well be intel driver bugs17:02
aquariuspopey, unlikely. Two bugs: one is "the screen goes black for a second and then returns" (which is not a useful photo) and the other is occasional colourd single-pixel horizontal lines, which appear momentarily and then vanish17:03
aquariusso they're not really amenable to being filmed17:03
bigcalmThat makes me think of a duff connection17:03
aquariusya. I tried unplugging and replugging the hdmi cable about five times, but maybe I'll try it again now17:04
bigcalmaquarius: sucking eggs time - is the cable fully secured in the monitor and screwed in?17:04
aquariusand try davmor2's suggestion of going dvi instead to see if that helps17:04
bigcalmaquarius: do you have another DVI or HDMI device you can connect to the desktop?17:04
bigcalmaquarius: or even connect the monitor to another source?17:05
aquariusi don't have any other monitors with even close to this much resolution17:05

popey17:06:15 < popey> are the horizontal lines at the same point?17:08
popeyor different lines??17:08
aquariusI don't think they were problematic, but maybe they are17:08
aquariuspopey, um. I *think* they're at roughly the same point, but it's really hard to say17:08
popeyhdmi would usually be all or nothing, not individual lines17:08

aquariusthat's weird17:10
aquariusstrangely also only one line17:10
aquariusalthough I unplugged at computer end and replugged, and then unplugged at monitor end and replugged17:11
aquariusso if there's a genine problem there should have been two lines17:11
aquariusso perhaps that was just a bad connection while I was plugging it in17:11
aquariusno black flickers17:11
aquariusso far17:11
aquariusso maybe it just wasn't plugged in right, sigh17:11

diddledangog.com have announced they're gonna release a slew of 100ish games for linux drm-free17:15
diddledanin the "fall"/autumn17:15
aquariusdiddledan, they have indeed. Finally. But well done to them; I shou;d not be snide, and it's fabulous to see them recognising Ubuntu as a gaming destination17:16
diddledandefinitely17:16
diddledanI've bought loads of games through gog.com just because they're drm-free and I support the cause17:16
aquariusOK. SMART self-test succeeded; nothing in syslog about ata errors.17:17
diddledanbarely ever played any of them, but I like to know I have them available17:17
aquariuswould a SMAT self-test trigger those errors, or does that just test the disk firmware without actually testing the disk itself?17:17
aquariusI suppose I could... format the disk.17:17
aquariuswhich is interesting, because I don't know how :P17:18
diddledansmart tests are a hard disc firmware-based test in that it's the firmware on the disc that does the testing. smart then provides a protocol to report the results of those tests to the host system17:18
diddledanso when testing for errors using smart there's no ata traffic involved17:19
popeyaquarius: same utility has a format option17:19
aquariusaha, so it does, thank you17:20
aquariusformatting: no errors.17:20
aquariushowever that's just made the disk 180gb of free space :)17:20
daftykinsno biggy17:20

* aquarius creates one 180GB ext4 partition17:21

directhexaquarius, precisely17:25
diddledandirecthex: you might be able to do it with http://www.pitivi.org/17:25

popeyyes.17:26
diddledanpopey: that's for the links, but people are underlaying the links with video content17:26
aquariuspopey, directhex is looking to have a screen with four little videos in it17:26
aquariusthat is: you make a video containing four little videos, then on the site you draw a box over each of the little videos and make the box a link to the actual video URL17:27
popeyi am sure I saw a how-to that said you do that on the site. I guess not17:27
directhexyes! aquarius totally understands me <317:27

popeyaquarius: so anyway, yeah, sata cable.17:29
popeypffft17:29
popeyopenshot blows goats17:29
aquariuspopey, right17:29
aquariusI agree that openshot blows, and it's *still* the best. This is a sad indictment of the sorry state of video editing on our platform :(17:30
aquariusalthough, lightworks.17:30
diddledanlightworks ftw17:30
aquariusanyway, kdenlive can do PiP too according to google17:30
popeynope17:30
popeykdenlive > openshot > pitivi17:31
popeyI had some rapid video editing to do recently, openshot and pitivi just crashed every time I breathed near it17:31
popeykdenlive didn't crash *once* in 20 hours of editing17:31
aquariusdirecthex, so, yeah, I suspect that everyone will actually name this "picture in picture" and thus looking for that in your chosen video editor sounds like the way17:31
daftykinsdirecthex: are you still thinking up a new name or are you keeping us in suspense? ;)17:33

ali1234mer is where all the (ex) nokia people went19:37
ali1234tizen is where intel went, joining up with samsung19:37
ali1234mer became jolla/sailfish19:37
ali1234sailfish is to mer what ubuntu is to debian pretty much19:38
diddledanthe theory is samsung made their weird ui on top of android to make android work entirely differently, then they made the same ui on tizen with the plan to silently migrate their phone lineup to the non-googlified os and hope nobody noticed19:38

directhexali1234, steamos has no dmraid subsystem, and the originpc & falcon northwest systems both advertise dual boot AND >4TB disk (which requires a RAID controller of some kind) without advertising use of a HW RAID controller19:43
directhexso clearly they're using software RAID with windows & haven't even tried it with steamos yet19:43
