LittleMacHello, anyone here?00:00
ianorlinanyway I can help00:00
LittleMacPossibly, I've decided to try and install Lubuntu on an old laptop, HP dv1040us.00:00
LittleMacIts running a pentium M and 512mb RAM00:01
LittleMacI'm trying to figure out what the latest version of Lubuntu I could run00:01
ianorlinah pentium M may have some trouble with the processor not saying it has pae when it does but see this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu-fake-PAE#Lubuntu_13.10_Fake-PAE_described_by_sudodus00:05
LittleMacSo if I'm reading this correctly, I wont need to fake-PAE because I have a Pentium M 1.6Ghz, and thats a newer model?00:08
phillwLittleMac: with 14.04 most of the 'M' series will not need fake pae.00:11
phillwthis is a battle we have won. They (the Gods) have put in the check to allow these computers to install the 32 bit version with no issues. This has freed up a tiny bit of resources to work on the system for the machines that are totally non-pae :)00:13
LittleMacso should I just try 14.04 beta?00:14
phillwLittleMac: the changes will all be in the 32 bit lubuntu daily. http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/308/builds grab which ever you prefer.. desktop or alternate. Just make sure you grab the 686 version :D00:16
phillwLittleMac: it shows as i38600:17

FuuqUmiistsince the 13.10 release is basically the only version available and support for it ends in just a few months, please tell me that upgrading 13.10 to 14.04 won't cause any issues21:05
holsteinFuuqUmiist: lol.. you should no no one can tell you taht21:05
holsteinthat*21:05
holsteinFuuqUmiist: nothing specifically about lubuntu or ubuntu will be making any known issues for you.. but, your hardware can have specific issues that are challenging to address21:06
holsteinFuuqUmiist: what i suggest is try the 14.04 version live on your hardware.. backup you data, and plan for failure. since your hard drive will fail, and that is not a waste of time.. then, you will be ready to upgrade or try a fresh instal of 14.0421:06
FuuqUmiistbut i need to install a distro for people on different computers now21:07
holsteinFuuqUmiist: nothing here is preventing you from addressing your needs21:07
FuuqUmiistbut 14.04 is releasing next month, and 13.10 only has a few months support21:08
holsteinFuuqUmiist: ok21:08
FuuqUmiisti might be out of town so they will be using an unsecure 13.1021:08
holsteinFuuqUmiist: so, you can give them 14.04 and come back in a few weeks and upgrade.. give them 13.10, and come back and reinstall or upgrade them21:08
FuuqUmiisti'm going to try to upgrade over remote desktop to 14.0421:09

melodiehi21:25
speckmadethat's what my computer is desperately trying to say to me through .xsession-errors21:25
speckmadeabout 8,000,000 times21:29
holsteinspeckmade: just let us know if you have a question21:30
speckmadeyeah - I don't understand that language yet... :-)21:30
speckmadeWhat's it trying to say to me?21:30
speckmadehd is full now... :-)21:30
speckmadeinit was veery busy.21:31
speckmadeIf anyone can give me clues to what's happening, that would help. :-)21:31
holsteinspeckmade: so, what im reading is, you are looking in a log file, and its filled, as in, it filled the hard drive with error messages?21:34
speckmadeyeah21:35
speckmadeand in the process of filling the harddrive my computer was quite busy21:35
holsteinare you up to date with upgrades? running a version of lubuntu?21:35
speckmadeinit grabbed all CPU it can get21:35
holsteinhave you tried purging x session configs? or running as a different user?21:36
speckmadelatest lubuntu here, automatic security updates21:36
holsteinspeckmade: check now, for upgrades21:36
holsteinsudo apt-get update $$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade21:36

speckmadethanks.21:38
speckmadejust understanding what I could be looking at would be something...21:40
holsteinerros with your xsession, as i read it21:40
holsteini would remove it from the equation by temporarily removeing the session configs, or testing with another user account.. after checking for and applying upgrades21:41
speckmade:-)21:41
speckmadeupgrades available: liblightdm-gobject-1-0, lightdm, tzdata21:42

oneThere is a dialoug box that say system program detected a problem do you want to report the problem now and then two buttons, cancel, and report.22:20
oneWhat tools may one use to assosiate this window with a runnning process?22:21
oneIt looks like one of those trojans.22:24
Unit193It's apport.22:24
oneIt looks like one of those fake error message trojans.22:24
oneUsing system monitor to look at the processes apport is not listed.22:27
holsteinim not aware of any of those fake error message trojans for lubuntu/linux.. there is apport22:28
holsteinyou should be able to search around, and get a screenshot of it.. or take one of what you are looking at , one , and a volunteer can share if they think it is apport or a trojan22:28
oneIt is not apport22:30
Unit193holstein: Even easier than that, google a couple of the words and you get all over with stuff like http://askubuntu.com/questions/43103/system-always-start-with-system-program-problem-detected-dialog22:30
holsteinone: ok.. let us konw if you have a question about what it is..22:32
oneWhat is it?22:35
oneapport doesn't show in the process list22:35
wxlone: it's probably a trojan gratefully provided to you by canonical. enjoy!22:36
wxl!apport | one22:36
wxlone: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport22:37
oneSomeone put it there.22:39
oneCanonical is just a calculator box isn't it?22:40
Unit193one: ps xfU $USER  pastebin that and show us.22:40
wxltotally22:40
* wxl puts his tin foil hat and mumbles to himself22:40
Unit193+on22:40
* wxl shrugs22:42
oneI am going to narrow down the process list first22:43
onewell whatever it is it is not obvious23:08
oneWhat help does sending the process list do?23:08
oneSay it names itself gnome-calander-factory23:08
holsteinone: i believe a volunteer was offering to look over your process list to help you find something that might be out of place, or malware23:09
holsteinUnit193 has asked for it in a pastebin for that reason, i assume23:09
holsteinthe "good" would be having someone else look at it23:10
onegnome-calander-factory23:10
wxlso that's what it's called?23:10
wxlbecause that's your problem right there: why do you have gnome running?23:10
onenot sure23:10
wxlthen maybe you should try to offer the pastebin23:10
onethe window pops up later23:10
oneand the comparision has 4 more processes23:10
onethere needs to be an ap that spys the api23:11
onelike the asterisk revealer23:11
holsteinwhat windows pops up later after what?23:11
wxljust watch your processes23:11
oneit can pinpoint the process that the window is coming from23:11
holsteinyou would insatll that app *before* you are compromised, otherwise, you cant trust anything the system reports like that23:11
wxlit will be obvious23:11
onethere needs to be something to reveal the process that generated the window by using mouover23:12
onemouseover23:12
holsteini use ps aux23:12
holsteinany malware could likely sense, and compromise such software..23:13
onewell it is a lot of work without the proper tools23:13
onewithout the proper tools it cannot be found23:13
holsteinwhat are you missing?23:13
holsteinyour pre-infection image?23:13
onesomething to point to the process with a mouseover23:14
holsteinthe proper tool can be a filemanager. or soemthing to diff what you had before the compromise23:14
oneI have the ubuntu cd23:14
holsteinone: that can be compromised, as well.. i use ps aux to identify processes.. is that not working for you?23:14
holsteinone: the lubuntu iso burned on cd??23:14
oneit doesnt matter23:14
oneyour not listening23:15
oneLISTEN23:15
onethere needs to be something to reveal the process that generated the window by using mouseover23:15
oneps aux doesnt do that23:15
oneyouns need to learn how to LISTEN23:15
holsteinone: i underestand what you are asking gor.. and *that* *sepcific* tool could be compromised as well23:15
wxlone: xwininfo -all | grep Process and click on the window23:16
onewxl: very well!23:17
oneupdate-notifier23:17
wxlwell there you go23:18
holsteinnothing i have read makes me think you have any malware going on.. have you been running as root?23:18
wxlno trojan after all23:18
wxl!search update-notifier23:18
ubottuFound:23:18
wxl!info update-notifier23:18
ubottuupdate-notifier (source: update-notifier): Daemon which notifies about package updates. In component main, is optional. Version 0.147.1 (saucy), package size 53 kB, installed size 267 kB23:18
phillwwxl: we had this FUD when ureadahead was launched...23:46
wxlphillw: well, at least it's not like your usual windows user. ;)23:47
