sohail-ahmedI am having trouble connecting to internet with my laptop which was previously working fine16:06
sohail-ahmedwould somebody help?16:06
GridCube!details | sohail-ahmed16:06
ubottusohail-ahmed: Please elaborate; your question or issue may not seem clear or detailed enough for people to help you. Please give more detailed information, errors, steps, and possibly configuration files (use the !pastebin to avoid flooding the channel)16:06
holsteinsohail-ahmed: define "previously" a bit more.. previsously in windows? before a system upgrade? just randomly and it could be a hardware failure?16:07
sohail-ahmedI did a xubunutu install perhaps a year ago and every thing was fine, then suddenly a month ago it stopped working. At present I dont have those indicator plugin, those up and down arrows, used to switch connection, perhaps due to network manager16:09
sohail-ahmedthe funny thing is I was able to ping machines on lan, when I was in the office and also I was able to ping the address 4.2.2.216:10
holsteinsohail-ahmed: if i didnt nothing to cause the issue, like a system upgrade, i would waant to rule out hardware failure16:10
sohail-ahmedread my last sentence plz, it says something do you still think it is a hardware failure16:11
sohail-ahmedat above I was talking about today16:11
holsteinsohail-ahmed: i read it, and the others.. carefully. im saying, i personally would rule out *all* hardware issues.. the router.. my isp, my networking device.. i would do this by troubleshoting carefully16:11
GridCubesohail-ahmed, try re-adding the plugin indicator to your panel16:12
sohail-ahmedI already did16:12
GridCubealso try to launch nm-connection-editor from a terminal16:12
holsteinsohail-ahmed: did what?16:12
GridCuberemoving all the known connections and re-doing them might fix some problems16:12
sohail-ahmedI tried to add the idicator plugin from the panel add items but the arrows does appear16:12
GridCubemake sure that your wifi is turned on16:13
sohail-ahmedactually I reinstalled the network manager16:13
sohail-ahmedby downloading the .debs16:13
holsteinsohail-ahmed: what debs? from where?16:13
GridCubecheck that you have internet if you cable your notebook16:13
sohail-ahmedat present my directory for system-connections at /etc/NetworkManager/ does not have any connection16:14
holsteinsohail-ahmed: i would use a live CD to rule out my config, and test my hardware16:14
sohail-ahmedI have already plugged in the internet cable and its not [picking it up. as before the auto ethernet is not working16:15
holsteinsohail-ahmed: sure.. thats what makes me think isp, or router/modem16:15
sohail-ahmedsince there is no connection by that name in the /etc/NetworkManger/system-connection16:15
sohail-ahmedno. I am talking to you from the same router16:15
holsteinsohail-ahmed: what deb did you install? and how/why?16:16
holsteinhave you tried a live CD?16:16
sohail-ahmedGridCube, nm-connection-editor says the program is not installed16:16
sohail-ahmedno I have not ttried live cd.16:17
sohail-ahmedis it the only option left?16:17
sohail-ahmedand the question instead is , what would I do If the live CD internet connection worked16:17
GridCubereinstall ?16:18
holsteinsohail-ahmed: you would know soemthing about where the issue is16:18
sohail-ahmedopssssssss!!!!!!!!!!1116:18
holsteinsohail-ahmed: thats would tell you the hardware isnt failing16:18
GridCubesohail-ahmed, if you dont have nm-connection-editor there is something very wrong16:18
GridCubesohail-ahmed, do you have nmcli ¿?16:18

sohail-ahmedGridCube, when I typed nmcli it says error while loading shared libraries....16:19
sohail-ahmedholstein, how would I proceed?16:19
sohail-ahmedif I know about the issue16:20
GridCubesohail-ahmed, it looks like there is your issue16:20
holsteinsohail-ahmed: i would load a live CD.. run it live, not installing. test my internet connections wired/wireles... then, i would know the issue is in my installed system, or bad hardware16:20
sohail-ahmedI already mentioned that today after a couple of minutes of working I manged to ping my lan pcs in office, and also I was able to ping the address 4.2.2.216:20
GridCubesohail-ahmed, i would try to boot the machine using an old kernel if available16:20
holsteinolder kernels should be accessible from grub when holding shift after the bios screens16:21
GridCube^^^16:21
GridCubebut then again, as holstein is saying you might want to try a livecd anyway, if that works then you have the option of figuring whats wrong and fixing it, or reinstalling and override everything16:22
sohail-ahmedwhich kernert should I boot to: plenty of them are available from 3.5.0-45- gnereic to 3.5.0-2316:22
GridCubesohail-ahmed, an older one16:23
sohail-ahmed23?16:23
GridCubesure why not16:23
sohail-ahmedfor 23 I have two options, with recovery mode or without recovery mode16:23
GridCubewithout16:23
sohail-ahmedthe xubuntu splash screen says waiting for network configuration...16:25
sohail-ahmedwaiting up to 60 more seconds for network configuration16:25
GridCubecan't you escape it?16:25
sohail-ahmedyes when I pressed esc, it went to the black screen and now my login is avaialble, I think it booted without network configuation as it is doing earlier16:26
GridCubesohail-ahmed, welp16:27
sohail-ahmedwelp??? sorry?16:27
GridCubeits like saying "well, i dont know then"16:28
sohail-ahmedI have my desktop and actually the same desktop with internet arrows.16:28
sohail-ahmedsorry without16:29
sohail-ahmed*** without16:29
GridCubesohail-ahmed, something went wrong, maybe the kernel update changed your setting and by installing the nm debs you broke the setting further, anyway, as holstein said, test using a livesession, if things work you can rule out hardware issues, then is a matter of getting yourself to study how to fix the problem or reinstall16:30
sohail-ahmedwould you tell me one thing?16:31
sohail-ahmedI have a network indicator plugin, the one showing the packets going out and going in.16:31
sohail-ahmedthe bars in that plugin are not moving now but they were moving in the morning when I was in the office, where I tried to do ping -c4 192.168.9.13516:32
sohail-ahmedand I got 0% loss16:32
sohail-ahmedpacket loss actually.16:32
sohail-ahmedSo my question is: does this not confirm that my card is working perfectly alright16:33
sohail-ahmed?16:33
GridCubei do not know16:34
sohail-ahmedok tell me one thing, if the live cd internet worked then what should I do afterward?16:36
GridCubeif things work you can rule out hardware issues, then is a matter of getting yourself to study how to fix the problem or reinstall16:36
sohail-ahmedcan you tell how to add connections when there is no indicator plugin for internet?16:37
sohail-ahmedok I will be right back after making a live linux usb from windows16:40
GridCubesohail-ahmed, using nm-connection-editor or nmcli16:40
sohail-ahmedbut I already told you that none of them is working16:41
holsteinsohail-ahmed: its a fact that something is not working.. the question is, why?16:42
sohail-ahmedand I purged the network manager this morning16:42
holsteinsohail-ahmed: rule out hardware.. it wont take long, and its a good/easy step16:42
sohail-ahmedOk mates I will be right back16:42
holsteinsohail-ahmed: then, you can decide if you'd like to try and repair, or reinstall.. or troubleshoot in a larger support channel16:42
sohail-ahmedlarger support channel?16:43
sohail-ahmed?16:43
sohail-ahmedwhat do you mean by larger support chanel16:43
holsteinsohail-ahmed: yes.. #ubuntu ,since this is not related to XFCE or xubuntu necessarily, youcan try the main channel for more action16:43
holsteinsohail-ahmed: though, i feel after the live CD, you will have an idea that the hardware works or not, and you can go from there16:44
sohail-ahmedoh you are saying that If its not an hardware issue then I should go the #ubuntu chanel with my problem? correct?16:44
holsteinany kernel upgrade can cause the drivers to change, and break something16:44
holsteinsohail-ahmed: no16:44
holsteinsohail-ahmed: im saying, the #ubuntu channel is factually more active.. and you may find more help there.. and you are not haveing an issue with xubuntu or xfce, so, that could be a helpful option for you16:45
sohail-ahmedOk. thanks I will first update you here.16:45
sohail-ahmedholstein, and GridCube I have checked that I can access internet through live usb17:01
holsteinsohail-ahmed: so, you can assume, at least for the length of testing, the hardware was functioning properly, and its likely not a hardware failure17:02
sohail-ahmedSo it possible to repair my installation through live usb17:02
sohail-ahmed?17:02
GridCubesohail-ahmed, then there is some software issue, as holstein said, you might have better help gettin someone who knows this issues on #ubuntu or you can reinstall17:02
holsteinsohail-ahmed: so, it could have been an upgrade that "broke" support for the device.. i didnt check the scroll back, but did you try the older kernel?17:02
sohail-ahmedyes I did17:03
sohail-ahmedactually the most older one17:03
holsteinsohail-ahmed: what i suggest to users is this.. since *all* hard drives fail, go ahead and take this opportunity to backup your data.. and be read for reinstallation.. then, you can go forward with *any* option17:03
sohail-ahmedso I repeat my question, is it possible to do a damage control using a live usb17:04
sohail-ahmed?17:04
holsteinsohail-ahmed: above *is* what i suggest for that17:05
holsteinsohail-ahmed: anything i would do like that would be *after* having properly backed up my data17:06
sohail-ahmedI need some enlightment, I clicked install xubuntu in my live usb sesssion, and now I have couple of options to choose from since the live usb has detected my ubuntu 12.04 LTS17:06
holsteinsohail-ahmed: that will fresh install and wipe your data17:07
sohail-ahmedupgrade ubuntu to Xubuntu 13.1017:07
sohail-ahmedis it wise option to go for??17:07
holsteinsohail-ahmed: factually, as i said, that will wipe your data17:07
holsteinsohail-ahmed: so, ifyou have your data backed up, and want to install 13.10, then that will happen17:08
holsteinsohail-ahmed: there is no specific "wise" choice.. just what you want or need, and what you can do17:08
sohail-ahmedso not an option.. though in the applet it says it will keep my personal files and by this I assume he meant the whole /home directory. correct???17:08
holsteinsohail-ahmed: i backup my data.. i suggest you backup your data, and suggested that before.. what is that process fails?17:09
holsteinsohail-ahmed: whatever hard drive you are on *will* fail, so, it is not a waste of time to prepare for that17:09
holsteinsohail-ahmed: then, having prepared for what will occur at some point in the future will prepare you for a failure now17:10
sohail-ahmedfrankly I have no way to transfereing data to some other hard drive.17:10
holsteinsohail-ahmed: ok.. then, you accept the risk, and no that, even if this works OK, some time you *will* lose your data17:10
holsteini cant guarantee that step will work and preserve your data.. i can gurantee that if you have a backup17:11
sohail-ahmedI think before attempting this step, as both of you have kindly suggested , go to #ubuntu, since its their flavor that has an issue.17:13
holsteinsure.. but, even in #ubuntu, that hard drive will fail.. you should have a backup of your files..17:13
holsteinthen, anything you try, you can recover from.. otherwise, you have no gurantee like that..17:13
holsteina fresh install *will* fix it.. for example17:14
sohail-ahmedI have an intution that the problem could be fixed without going through a major install, though I am still a noob with linux17:15
holsteinsohail-ahmed: no doubt.. its all open, and im sure you can fix it.. but, it may take less time to properly backup (which should be done regardless) and reinstall..17:17
sohail-ahmedthe problem with reinstall is that I would be needing to reinstall all the softwares that are currently installed on my machine, regardless of the backup17:19
holsteinsohail-ahmed: sure, which will also be happening when that hard drive fails17:19
holsteinsohail-ahmed: you can create a list of those.. or use synaptic package manager to create a list of those that can be easily duplicated in a fresh install17:20

GridCubewell, now you have internet, do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install network-manager18:33
GridCubethat should bring back the arrows you see in the indicators plugin18:33
sohail-ahmedI have already done the update, and I think I should not install network-manager since it manges my networ poorly, moreover I am having a great bandwidth now which I have never encountered here at home.18:36
sohail-ahmedrather I should not have said poorly, without network-manager, I have learned a great deal about the linux18:37
GridCube:)18:38
sohail-ahmeddo you know of a way to add more connections?18:38
sohail-ahmedwithout network-manager?18:38
GridCubenope18:44
wabblasohail-ahmed: what do you mean by more connections? different ip-configurations on the same interface or different interfaces?19:03
wabblain the latter you could add more interfaces to /etc/network/interfaces and use ifup/ifdown to connect/disconnect, in the former you could also add new connections to /etc/network/interfaces, but use a logical name instead of the interface name. then you could use e.g. ifup eth0=<logical name>. see the man page for ifup regarding logical interfaces. this is a very comfortable feature for wlan roaming.19:13
sohail-ahmedwabbla, that's exactly what I was asking for!!19:19

=== xubuntu429 is now known as RuudKuin
RuudKuinHi all, does someone know the correct way to install an Eizo driver via terminal? It looks very choppy, while it runs fine under Bodhi Linux...19:38
RuudKuinanyone???19:39
RuudKuinHmmmm, no support, better be using Bodhi than, their IRC is very much alive, bye!!!19:40
holsteinRuudKuin: ?19:41
holsteinRuudKuin: what distro are you using.. try patiently using the suggested support for the distro you are using.. but, the Eizo driver creator would be the best place to start for suport19:41
RuudKuinholstein: do you have an answer?19:41
RuudKuinXubuntu, that's why I'm here...19:42
RuudKuinBodhi gave no problems, it's an Ubuntu derivative as well...19:43
holsteinRuudKuin: nothing about xubuntu or bodhi is preventing the creators of the Eizo driver from giving you a package that installs19:43
holsteinRuudKuin: you would need to share more details, like, what you are trying and what the errors are.. but, if you are not using xubuntu, bodhi channels are the best place19:44
RuudKuinholstein: I'm currently using a fresh install of Xubuntu, because it's light for an oldtimer PC and runs XFCE, but it seems that it doesn't support an Eizo Nanao 15" screen.19:47
holsteinRuudKuin: ive never needed a driver for a screen.. but, i have used custom xorg.conf files to send necessary confiuration to certain monitors19:47
RuudKuinRadial gradients are choppy and very ugly, when running Bodhi, there was pre-installed support for that same screen19:48
holsteinRuudKuin: its likely not the screen at all then.. its more likely the graphics card driver19:48
holsteinRuudKuin: you could also be comparing a version of bodhi based on 12.04, and using xubuntu 13.10.. those would have different hardware support scnearios19:48
RuudKuinholstein: when searching for additional drivers, it doesn't tell me anything on the graphics card support... ;-((19:49
holsteinRuudKuin: i would start by appying all upgrades and rebooting.. then, determine what graphics card you have, and looking for alternative drivers (proprietary drivers) you can install and try which may sort out your issues..19:50
notwistI'm using 14.04 and it's a pain that my screen blanks after 10 minutes, disabling screensaver and power management features does nothing. Is there a better way to solve this than editing xorg.conf ?19:50
holsteini would then also consider looking at the bodhi that you report working, and go with the xuubuntu version that is the same.. 12.04, for example19:51
holstein!14.0419:51

holsteinRuudKuin: lspci is the command that lists the devices.. you should only have one graphics card..19:51
RuudKuinholstein: thanks! Here's the output:19:53
holsteinRuudKuin: i dont need it19:53
RuudKuin00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03)19:53
holsteinRuudKuin: intel are usually well supported, but, i think you are assuming the issue is with the monitor19:53
RuudKuinthanks anyway! Bye for now...19:53
holsteinRuudKuin: i would try 120419:53
* RuudKuin out!19:54

Sweyn(did my message got blocked ?)22:09
holsteinSweyn: could be for any reason from internet connectivity, to who knows22:09
Sweynoh ok, still I think I'll have some trouble to get used to this22:09
SweynI can't even install flash player22:09
Sweyndon't know how to do it22:09
holstein!flash22:09
ubottuTo install Flash see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/Flash - See also  !Restricted and !Gnash22:09
holsteini use the chrome brwoser, since it has its own flash22:09
SweynOh ok, did you download it from the xubuntu store or from google's netpage ?22:10
holsteinSweyn: chome is not available from the ubuntu repositories22:10
SweynOK, I'm trying this out22:11
DamadFRholstein: Chromium browser is available in the universe repositories - I had it installed it from the package manager.22:16
holsteinDamadFR: yup.. and i am referencing the chrome browser..22:20
holsteinDamadFR: the chrome brwoser is the one with flash built in, though, one can use the pepperflash included in chrome with chromium, and you are welcome to share with Sweyn how to do that22:20
holsteinotherwise, one of the easiest ways for a new user to get the latest flash in linux is in the chrome browser.. not that im saying chrome is "good" or "better"22:21
SweynWell seems firefox made the update itself, I can now read videos on youtube22:21
SweynHolstein, I don't know if you have the same chromebook as me but does it have a x86 cpu ?22:22
holsteinSweyn: i have an intel precessor. .not an ARM22:22
SweynOkay fine, did you tried some small games with it ?22:23
DamadFRholstein: sorry, so I mixed things up: chrome / chromium22:23
holsteinSweyn: as i said, i literallly just got it.. ive had it about 35 minutes.. im not planning on gaming. nor did i intend to use it for games.. nothing about xubuntu is preventing you from gaming with it22:23
holsteinDamadFR: no worries :)22:24
SweynOk then, guess I'll have to find out by myself, when I'll manage to make it install on my usb flash22:24
Sweynthese celerons appear to be quite powerfull though22:25
holsteinSweyn: xubuntu playes the games linux is allowed to have22:25
holsteinSweyn: the hardware is not intended for gaming in any OS, but, if the specs work, it'll work22:25
SweynYup, I'll try by myself, or look for tests somewhere22:25
SweynStill, I'm not entirely convinced in my chromebook22:26
Sweynit runs fine22:26
Sweynbut without internet you're pretty much with a dead brick22:26
holsteinit runs "as advertised"... the only reason you would be unsure is by trying to make it replace a gaming rig22:26
holsteinbut, xubuntu will run on there are well, as advertised.. steam should support the lower-end games on here fine22:27
Sweynyeah sure, I don't wanna use it to hard games, I already have my desktop for that, but if it can replace a little some times, it would be nice that way !22:27
SweynWhere does USB flash drives appear in xubuntu please ?22:31
holsteinSweyn: i just use the file manager22:34
Sweynwell seems like it doesn't appear, because I'm already on it ...22:34
SweynMaybe there's some limitations on using the OS on a usb key22:34
Sweynthat would make sense22:34
Sweynokay then, I think I have everything I need to know22:35
SweynI hope I'll manage to get it working on my laptop22:35
SweynThanks Holstein, I'll probably ask you fore some help later, Bye !22:36
