dean_jaserHello14:37
zen_monkeyHi, I've installed Lubuntu 13.10 on an old poweredge 1300 server yesterday from the alternate cd and after rebooting i can't seem to get to the desktop. I get to see the wallpaper and cursor then the screen gets all black (x crash?) and again, and again17:15
zen_monkeydo i have to config anyything? maybe force it to use some old driver or such?17:16
=== duoi_afk is now known as duoi
zen_monkeyhow can i boot into safe graphics mode?17:29
vn151502510Not sure about booting, but you can press Ctrl Alt F1 to login without X, I guess so.17:32
zen_monkeyit won't allow me to switch to a tty... seems to like crashing :D17:34
vn151502510your laptop is really old, cannot run on live cd, right?17:37
zen_monkeydidn't even tried with 13.10, ubuntu 10.04 was the last thing working. And it's a server tower.17:40
vn151502510uhm, sorry, no experience, waiting for some pros :-(17:42
zen_monkeythanks anyway17:47
wxlaw, too bad, and i had the answer17:55

zen_monkeywhat can be done when x keeps crashing after plymouth? i have auto login enabled and after the loading dots y just see the wallpaper and cursor19:51
zen_monkeytried to got to a tty but got dragged back to the previous situation, nomodeset doesn't help19:52
ianorlindoes it work if you turn autologin off?19:57
ianorlinalso is your home encrypted?19:57
zen_monkeyianorlin, no encryption used, how can i do it from the cli?19:58
Unit193!xhangs19:58
ubottuIf the GUI hangs after logging in, use <ctrl><alt><f1> to switch to text mode. Log in and do: rm .{X,ICE}authority19:58
Unit193Also, what do the logs say?19:59
zen_monkeyUnit193, it won't allow me to switch to a tty, i'm actually on the recovery root console updating everything just in case20:01
zen_monkeywhat logs you mean?20:01
Unit193zen_monkey: That's strange indeed.  You can do it there as well, or boot into text mode and do it from there.  Logs, ~/.cache/upstart/, `dmesg`, or in /var/log/ (since you are not in the currently broken session, not dmesg.)20:02
zen_monkeyUnit193, ok, as soon as it finishes with the update i'll see what i find there20:05
utusanI have a gpt-formatted 2nd drive and the 1st part is not showing on places but the 2nd part is. any ideas?20:05
Unit193utusan: Does it show up?  sudo lsblk -f20:07
utusanUnit193: it shows up in blkid20:07
utusanyes it does20:08
Unit193And the fs type is?20:10
utusanext420:10
utusan├─sda1  ext4   gubu2   /20:10
utusan└─sda2  ext4   gdata220:12
Unit193And when you try to mount manually?20:13
utusanI can manually mount it no problem20:14
utusanright now it's mounted as root,  let me login to another. brb  Unit19320:17
zen_monkeyUnit193, ready, took the whole /var/log/ folder, any file in particular?20:21
Unit193zen_monkey: Generally xorg or syslog.20:22
Unit193utusan: Yeah, that may not show up when mounted and owned by another user.20:22
utusanUnit193: I'm using another one now but it's still not showing20:24
zen_monkeyUnit193, here's Xorg.0.log.old http://paste.ubuntu.com/7158865/20:25
utusan├─sda1  ext4   ubu1    /20:25
utusan├─sdb1  ext4   gubu220:25
Unit193zen_monkey: Yep, that'd do it.20:26
utusanUnit193: not sure but looks like all file mgr I used are not showing it. be pcmanfm or dolphin or caja20:27
zen_monkeyUnit193, and just in case... syslog... http://paste.ubuntu.com/7158879/ (gedit warned me of some weird chars upon open)20:28
Unit193zen_monkey: Weird, I had flgrx issues on trusty (which are fixed now), not saucy.  So I'd recommend removing or rebuilding the fgrlx module.20:29
Unit193utusan: Normally you'd let the computer mount the thing, otherwise you can use -o user=foo, group=bar  with the mount line.20:30
utusanUnit193: I'm just curious why it's not showing up under places.  I have several others (msdos, and 1 gpt) and they show up except this one.20:34
utusanUnit193: thanks anyway20:42
Unit193Sure, have fun.20:42
zen_monkeyUnit193, what fo you mean with rebuilding it?20:50
Unit193Using `dkms`20:50
zen_monkeyany chance that you could guide me or point to a tutorial?20:51
Unit193I don't suppose the manpage would be enough?20:54
zen_monkeyi'll give it a read20:55
zen_monkeytry*20:55
Unit193Use dkms to remove the current one, then autoinstall (iirc) it again.20:55
zen_monkeyUnit193, as the card in question is waaay too old, wouln't be more usefull to give the open driver a go?21:09
Unit193That was the other option that I stated, yep.  That'd be the next step, or first step if you prefer.21:10
zen_monkeywell, i'm new to this drivers thing and this one is like from a museum :P21:13
zen_monkeyi've just read that fglrx doesn't support some "old" drivers on the ubuntu documentation21:15
zen_monkeyUnit193, well g2g, i'll be back after some drivers playing21:43
zen_monkeythanks21:43
