deltHello02:25
deltmy system can't boot from my usb stick :(02:26
holsteindelt: your system you installed to the usb stick? or a live installation stick?02:26
delti wrote the iso file to it with dd if=isofile of=/dev/....02:26
holsteindelt: what i do it, i test on other hardware, to make sure the USB stick is capable..02:27
deltactually it's a cheap sd card reader with a sd card in it....02:27
deltmight that be the problem?02:27
holsteincould be.. i would confirm that by trying it on another machine.. if 2 machines cant boot it, i might assume that02:28
deltcause afaik if it can contain the iso data.... and the bootable stuff is in the iso data....'02:28
holsteindelt: doenst matter if the device is "bad" or incapable of being booted.. or not showing up to the computer at that time that it needs to be02:28
delthmkay, here goes testing booting it on the laptop...02:29
holsteini would then try unetbootin to make the stick.. or try other sticks02:29
deltholstein: dd if=isofile.iso of=/dev/bootstick doesn't work normally?02:30
holsteindelt: sure02:30
holsteindelt: but, we are troubleshooting now, since that doesnt work02:30
deltok, imma stay in this channel since this is a screen session hosted on my main server.... brb02:31
delt:(02:47
deltlaptop is having difficulty at boot time with the usb stick .... stays stuck until i remove it, then boots from hdd02:48
deltok, using a better sd card > usb reader now02:48
deltso, dd if=isofile.iso of=/dev/sd?? should create a bootable device, right?02:49
holsteindelt: correct02:49
=== phiks_ is now known as phiks
deltholstein: /dev/sdb1 or just /dev/sdb? ....ie the partition or the drive itself?02:51
deltthat might have been the problem, i tried writing to the partition, assuming the BIOS would be able to read the partition table & such.......02:52
holsteind if=/path/to/your/isofile of=/your/usb/disk02:53
holsteinhttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_Flash_Installation_Media#In_GNU.2FLinux02:54
deltah ok, thanks02:55
holsteinthough, if you are unsure, use unetbootin... its easy, and runs on win/lin/osx02:56
deltanyway... it's writing now, should take a few minutes. so in the mean time, i'll check out this unetbotin02:58
holstein!info unetbootin02:59
ubottuunetbootin (source: unetbootin): installer of Linux/BSD distributions to a partition or USB drive. In component universe, is optional. Version 575-1ubuntu2 (saucy), package size 284 kB, installed size 830 kB02:59
deltproblem is, the machine i'm trying to install to DOES NOT HAVE A CD/DVD READER. so i'm forced (for now) to use a USB bootable stick/memcard.03:01
delthence the dd if=image.iso of=/dev/usbstick stuff....03:01
deltactually i was planning to use my old ide/pata reader with an adapter i bought (and the guy at the store told me it would work) .....except i come home and (1) find out the adapter is meant for older boards to run PATA drives, and (2) i call the store and the same guy tells me it should also work in the "reverse" direction ie. older drive on newer board. Does NOT.03:04
deltanyawy, dd is on its merry way of writing the .iso file to my usb stick/card.....03:05
deltexcept writing directly to the card (not a partition on the card) kind of seems to me like.... :/03:06
deltkind of like a book with no title, no front/cover page, that starts directly with "once upon a time...." at the upper left......03:07
deltoh and i also wish dd had a "progess bar" mode, cause there's no way of telling at how much % it's done in this particular case03:08
delt:( :(03:08
deltdamn, good thing i have this laptop :/03:09
DrPossumHey, whenever I do the dim/brighten hotkeys on my Aspire One, it does it, but it also brings up two copies of the display settings03:13
DrPossumThis is also recent behavior03:14
deltholstein: also..do you recommend trying out 14.04 beta1?03:16
delt+ if/when updates (ie. beta2) come in the future, will i have to reinstall?03:17
deltoh hello cfhowlett03:17
delthow are you?03:17
cfhowlettdelt, greetings.  no idea on your query as I ONLY do released versions and ONLY LTS.  ask in #ubuntu+103:17
deltah ok.....03:19
deltbtw where did my stuff in /tmp go??????03:19
delt:(03:19
Unit193You rebooted right?  It's gone.03:20
cfhowlettdelt, /tmp does = /temporary ...03:21
deltyeah, that's what i thought.... :/03:22
deltok, done writing, so here goes ....03:38
deltSuccess!! :D :D installing now.....03:51
deltok, so if all goes well, i'll be back here, from my main desktop machine... !03:53
holsteindelt: no reason not to try 14.04.. its just not officially supported here yet04:03
deltholstein: uh.. i just installed 14.04 :( .....any reason to erase and go back to 13.whatever?04:10
holsteindelt: like i said, there is not a reason that i say you shouldnt be running 14.04 now. as long as you konw what it is04:11
holsteinits not supported here04:11
deltwill it be in the (mid to near) future?04:12
holsteindelt: will what be what?04:12
deltwill ubuntustudio 14.xx be supported "here" (as in, this channel?) in the near/mid/long term future?04:13
cfhowlettdelt, ubuntustudio has its own channel04:13
holsteindelt: ubuntustudio has its own channel.. #ubuntustudio.. but, 14.04 gets supported officially when its released04:13
cfhowlettdelt, and NO trusty will be officially supported until officially released04:13
holstein!14.04 | delt04:13
ubottudelt: Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) will be the 20th release of Ubuntu.  See the announcement at http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1295 for more info. support in #ubuntu+104:13
deltah ok thanks04:14
holsteindelt: which, as you can read, will be quite soon! :)04:14
deltahhh yeah!! my good old (kind of shitty) desktop screen!!!!! :D :D :D04:25
deltso um... gotta sort out some wires & stuff. brb04:28
xubuntu760hola05:02
xubuntu127hi all. wondering if it's a pain to get ZFS setup on xubuntu05:09
Unit193!zfs | This is my best guess, which isn't great.  There's also Btrfs.05:09
ubottuThis is my best guess, which isn't great.  There's also Btrfs.: For information concerning ZFS and Ubuntu, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ZFS05:09
xubuntu127thanks... i found that page with some googling, wasn't sure if there were any xubuntu related issues05:12
xubuntu127currently running ubuntu, and considering changing over to xubuntu as i've read it has slightly less memory overhead05:13
Unit193Yeah, Xfce has less overhead than Unity, for sure.05:14
xubuntu127also hoping my problems with xorg consuming 100%+ of my CPU will go away with a different distro :)05:15
deltre05:15
deltproblems mounting nfs volumes from the server :/05:16
Unit193Same distro, different flavor/DE.05:16
deltmount deimos:/ /net/deimos/05:17
deltresults in "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on deimos:/," etc etc05:17
deltuser@phobos:~$ cat /proc/filesystems | grep -i nfs05:19
deltnodevnfs05:19
deltnodevnfs405:19

Unit193delt: Sorry I can't help, my kernel doesn't have nfs and I haven't used it.05:21
deltholstein: advice needed -- do i reinstall with 13.10, or do i try to work around problems in 14.xx ?05:23
arrithdelt: i'm in the same boat05:42
arrithdelt: right now i'm sitting tight on a previous release and i'm going to wait i guess a month or two after 14.04 comes out05:42
arrithdelt: assuming you can get things in a kind of workable-state05:43
arrithpersonally i have to do some weird incantations to keep my setup running, but's mostly working05:43
oneThe kern output is not printing.06:07
oneprintk is set there must be something else supressing it06:07
oneWhat is the problem here that the debug output is not printing to console?06:08

GIMMELWow that captha is tough07:40
ash_mI went to a linux chat room to ask for general guidance on re-installing xubuntu to a flash drive and I still ran into problems. At least I was able to adjust the size of the partitions upon install, but when I rebooted I got a "GRUB rescue" error message. Any ideas?07:40
GIMMELFirst time xubuntu user and installing it as we speak :)07:40
ash_mIt sucks because it works fine with a fresh USB drive.07:40
ash_mbut /every time/ *without fail* I always run into problems when I try to reinstall07:41
GIMMELhave you tried downloading a rescue disk onto a usb stick?07:41
ash_mGIMMEL: honestly, I haven't tried anything yet; I just threw my hands up in the air and planted my face into a desk07:41
GIMMELit's what I had to do when my win7 install succumbed to the (possibly) worst rootkit mankind has ever created07:42
GIMMELhey who knows, that could work07:42
GIMMELi thought linux was supposed to be ugly07:42
ash_mhonestly, I just want to know what I did wrong. Where did I stray from the path? Is that so much to ask? :(07:42
GIMMELKDE... *shrugs heavily*07:43
GIMMELmaybe grub just isnt for USB drives07:43
* ash_m looks up KDE07:43
GIMMELdont07:44
ash_mI thought KDE was like a ... what do you call it... the thing that boots up x07:44
GIMMELyou will feel sick07:44
ash_mthe log in screen or whatever07:45
Unit193ash_m: How did you create the USB drive?  Is it perhaps pointing to the grub config on that drive, which is no longer inserted?07:45
Unit193ash_m: That's the DM, desktop manager, login manager, etc.07:45
Unit193(Xubuntu uses lightdm for the login.)07:45
GIMMELhttp://i1-news.softpedia-static.com/images/news2/KDE-4-0-Beta-3-Available-Now-3.png (not for the faint of heart)07:46
GIMMELit used to be even worse, all shiny and candy looking07:46
ash_mUnit193: yeah, that's what I was aiming for. However, wikipedia was telling me KDE is a community or something07:46
GIMMELah07:46
Unit193KDE is a desktop Env, like Xfce.07:47
Unit193!kde07:47
ubottuKDE (http://kde.org) is an open community that creates and maintains software including the Plasma desktop.  To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install  kubuntu-desktop », or see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingKDE . See  http://kubuntu.org for more information.07:47
GIMMELso you can do portable xubuntu installs?!07:47
Unit193GIMMEL: I'd do a live with persistence.07:47
GIMMELah07:47
Unit193!persistence07:47
ubottuTo have some persistent storage when using a Live CD, follow the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDPersistence07:47
ash_mthere are so many things. desktop environment, desktop manager, login manager... this all have different names?07:47
GIMMELthe install just finished!07:47
Unit193GIMMEL: Congrats.07:48
GIMMELanything i should do before rebooting?07:48
GIMMELlike to check if grub is there07:48
Unit193Should be good to go.07:48
GIMMELokay! i'll trust you07:48
GIMMELthis better work.. or else.. :)07:48
Unit193Hopefully, normal BIOS install.07:48
GIMMELbe back in a bit07:48
GIMMELoh one quick thing07:49
GIMMELi installed with IDE set in bios07:49
GIMMELdo i need to change something for AHCI disks to boot07:49
GIMMEL(ssd)07:49
ash_mUnit193: to answer your question, the first time I installed xubuntu (13.10), it worked fine. I kinda screwed everything up so I figured I'd try to reinstall. I used a USB stick to install off of, and on to another USB stick......07:50
Unit193Well, that'd explain a few things.07:50
GIMMELhahah, thats very meta07:51
ash_mfor the reinstall, I booted from the USB stick with the installer using "try xubuntu" (I assume this is referred to as the "live" version?)07:51
GIMMELyeah it is07:52
ash_mI used gparted to check to see that the USB stick I wanted to reinstall to was not mounted (as advised by some other people in a linux chat) and then deleted the partitions07:52
GIMMELxubuntu just wants us to Live maan07:52
ash_mthen I restarted and installed xubuntu to the flash drive I just cleared07:52
GIMMELdid you finally make it persistent07:53
ash_mit seemed to go off without a hitch until I rebooted without the installer USB stick and then I got an error with a prompt, "GRUB rescue>"07:53
GIMMELoh..07:53
ash_mwhy did I have to update? whhhhyyyyy?07:54
GIMMELhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/321302/xubuntu-live-usb-persistence-how-to07:54
GIMMELlooks legit07:54
ash_misn't persistence for the live version?07:55
GIMMELyeah isn't that what you want?07:55
GIMMELyour files will remain after a reboot07:55
GIMMELoh wait07:55
GIMMELyou dont get root right07:55
ash_mGIMMEL: no, that's not what I was attempting to accomplish07:56
ash_msee, everything was fine when I installed to a fresh usb stick07:56
GIMMELall right07:56
ash_mI used a program called LiLi to make an installer on a usb stick from the xubuntu-13.10 .iso file07:57
ash_mand used that installer to install xubuntu to a flash drive;07:57
ash_ma second flash drive07:57
Unit193Yes, but we're missing the 'why'.07:58
GIMMELmaybe this will help out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick07:58
ash_mwhenever this is a fresh USB drive that I haven't tampered with, especially not installing an OS, this works fine, but alas; I am unable to reinstall correctly... not in the genes you see.07:59
GIMMELi made my live usb stick in tinyxp07:59
ash_mthe why? well I have several machines running off usb sticks.07:59
GIMMELformat it and give it another go07:59
ash_musually people get upset when I give them a why any deeper then that07:59
GIMMELdid you install those usb drives the same way as just now?08:00
GIMMELi mean if they work this should work08:00
ash_mit certainly looked the same08:00
ash_mI mean08:00
ash_mall the prompts were the same08:01
ash_mand it reached the end of it08:01
GIMMELif you have a windows or mac machine it's very easy to do08:01
ash_mI assume I must be a complete idiot when it comes to common linux sense.08:01
ash_mGIMMEL: what is? reinstall? I agree.08:02
GIMMELyeah08:02
ash_mbut my question is, what is it that I do wrong?... I just don't get it. I feel like if I am going to do something wrong I should be mashing mindlessly on the keys08:02
GIMMELokay im rebooting now, wish me luck. and i hope you get that install working!08:02
ash_mGOOD LUCK08:02
GIMMELbyee08:03
ash_mUnit193: so; like I was saying earlier, I used gparted to clear out the usb I wanted to reinstall onto... was that the wrong thing to do?08:04
ax562what's your experience with xubuntu themes?08:04
ax562does anyone know of stable/reliable themes?08:04
ash_max562: my experience is as follows: I am not certain what the difference is between a theme and a flavor. Does that help?08:05
Unit193Shimmer themes, or the one I'm using.08:05
ash_max562: I hear good things about mint08:05
ash_mor maybe just plentiful things08:05
Unit193ash_m: He's talking about themes, as in, settings manager -> appearance.08:05
ash_mUnit193: hah. just goes to show08:05
ash_mUnit193: any ideas on where I went wrong? Should I use gparted again (with the live version) and try to reinstall a second time?08:06
Unit193And pay attention where you're installing grub to.08:07
ash_mmaybe it was the fact that I only used 1 big partition instead of ½-space for 1 and ¼-space for 2 others.08:07
ax562unit193: yes, appearence not flavor08:08
ash_mUnit193: I install through a gui; I felt like it was a pretty standard gui as regardless of which live disk creator I use or which version of xubuntu; they are all very similar: ask to download/install 3rd party software, ask about partitions, ask about timezone, Install08:09
ax562stock xfce 4.10 is horrid looking08:09
ash_mUnit193: in other words, I always assumed something like where grub is being installed is something the installer would take care of. I don't see a screen about where to install grub specifically08:10
elfyash_m: to do that - use the Something Else option at partition stage08:11
elfyotherwise it will install grub to sda08:11
Unit193ax562: Stock Xubuntu uses Greybird, not fond of it?  There's either the other shimmer themes, MediterraneanNight, or something else that happens to support GTK2 and 3.08:11
ash_melfy: (1) isn't that where I want it installed; (2) I always select "Something Else"; usually I make 3 partitions; 4GB on /, 2GB on /usr and /var.... this time around I did all 8GB on / because people told me that was better in the Linux channel08:13
elfyyou asked the question - I answered it ;)08:14
ash_melfy: considering what I said I have done before, do you think I should keep doing 3 partitions or make 1? Also, any idea what I should be keeping an eye out for when looking to make sure GRUB is installed in the right location?08:16
ax562trying xfce-dusk08:17
ax562going to try it out08:17
elfyash_m: I've not read the backlog08:17
ax562I like the black themes..easy on the eyes08:17
ax562I just want stability08:17
ash_melfy: all I said was in the past I installed 3 different partitions mounted at the following locations: 4GB on /, 2GB on /usr and /var.... I was recently informed to install to 1 partition of all 8GB on /... incidently, it's the only thing I did differently when I reinstalled and now I am getting a GRUB error. Do you think I should install with 3 or 1 partitions?08:19
elfyon a usb stick I would08:20
elfywhat you need to do is ensure that grub installs to the stick - then when you boot a machine with the stick plugged in, boot to that and you should have grub08:21
ash_melfy: "on a usb stick I would" You would what? Install 3 partitions or 1?08:24
ash_melfy: also, how do I ensure where grub is installed from the partitions screen? any special instructions?08:24
GIMMELit.. worked? im not used to an OS booting08:25
GIMMELit's been days..... *Sobs*08:25
elfyash_m: sorry - still waking up ... 1 partition :)08:25
GIMMELhow's the USB alchemy going ash_m08:25
elfyash_m: use Something else on the partition screen - set the partitions - at the bottom you can choose where to install grub08:26
ash_mI haven't reattempted to install yet. I think I might in the morning. I am just depressed. I will pay extra-special close attention to the partitions screen, but I really don't remember anything out of the ordinary.08:26
ash_mright now I am cheering myself up with the mundane project of making an excel function  (not vba; don't get excited) to tell me which bits are on when you plug in a number between 1-25508:28
GIMMELokay, i hope it works out08:28
GIMMELoh boy!08:28
ash_mI'll let you know when I finish08:29
GIMMELaight08:30
GIMMELgotta go pick up a fresh package of illegal narcotics now ;)08:31
ash_mGIMMEL: done08:35
ash_mhere it is: =IF($A$2-(SUMIF(INDIRECT("B"&ROW()&":"&CHAR(COLUMN()+63)&ROW()), 1,INDIRECT("B1:"&CHAR(COLUMN()+63)&"1"))+C1)<0, 0, 1)08:35
GIMMELoh god that makes me so hard08:35
GIMMELhahah, joking08:35
GIMMELi don't know shit about code08:35
ikoniaok, enough with the drug/sexual stuff please.08:35
ash_massuming $A$2 is your value08:35
ikoniaand the language08:35
GIMMEL:(..?08:35
elfyplease take the offtopuc elsewhere and watch the language08:35
GIMMELsorry man08:36
GIMMELi'll do my best to remember08:36
ash_mit is awesome though. To me anyway :P08:37
GIMMELi'll trust you :)08:37
GIMMELthe most advanced thing i can do is set up an apache server and configure wordpress on it :I08:38
ash_msetting up apache is a handy skill08:38
GIMMELbut i'm great at windows stuff. oh wait, that no longer applies. welp08:38
GIMMELi guess i am completely useless now.08:39
GIMMEL(joking)08:39
GIMMELwhat the hell? "cannot read dev/sda"08:40
GIMMELwhat does that imply08:40
GIMMELI DONT KNOW WHAT ALL THESE FOLDERS ARE FOR08:40
ikoniathat is a device file08:41
ash_mnight everyone08:41
GIMMELoh okay, thanks08:41
GIMMELprobably my secondary harddrive then08:42
ikonia"a" suggests it's your first08:42
GIMMELugh the software center crashed, and oh okay thats good to know08:42
SashcoHey! Anyone here that can provide help with xubuntu?08:44
SashcoHey! Anyone here that can provide help with xubuntu?08:44
ikoniatry asking a question, and then people will respond if they can/know the answer08:44
GIMMELikonia seems to know his stuff08:44
GIMMELand yes that08:44
GIMMELthis is a channel for support after all08:44
Sashcowell, I am not a techie with Linux software..had to install it to learn to use python. In other words, a newbie.08:45
oneDo not do homosexuality.08:45
SashcoLast night everything froze. Had to shut the comp down manually. After restart everything was happening slowly. I can't run Package Manager at all. Was trying to reinstall xubuntu, but that doesn't work..08:46
GIMMELim gay and not caring about remarks like that is what people like me should all do08:47
GIMMELif they dont get a reaction, they'll eventually stop08:47
ikoniaGIMMEL: or not comment at all and just stick to the xubuntu support topic08:48
GIMMELit's worked for me08:48
GIMMELyeah i guess08:48
ikoniaSashco: if you want help, you're going to have provide more info that "doesn't work"08:48
SashcoEVen the error I get is completely weird. It doesn't say anything. How do I post an error-report from xubuntu?08:48
GIMMEL"help! my thing is broken! what do I do?" Computer Janitor Hell08:49
GIMMELokay be back later08:49
SashcoIt just says: "The error msg was: 'Unknown error: <class key error>08:49
ikoniaSashco: if you have internet access use a patebin, such as pastebin.ubuntu.com08:50
Sashcowhat language should I use? Just plain text?08:51
GIMMELyeah, thats for code coloration08:52
GIMMELplain text is fine08:52
SashcoAnd also, is there a way to reinstall xubuntu just off the bat from the terminal? I don't use this computer for personal things, so I really don't need to backup anything.08:52
SashcoOkey. But here is another question. How do look for this error? Is there a cmd that I need to type in terminal? sry about these questions, but the technicals here are a completely new world to me.08:54
SashcoHow do "I" look for this error?08:54
Sashcoas I am not sure what to paste into the Pastebin.08:56
SashcoGIMMEL, what am I suppose to paste into the pastebin? An error report? How do I produce such report? Do I have to type in a command in terminal to get it?08:58
GIMMELyou're unable to copy it?08:58
GIMMELare you able to take a screengrab, hell even a picture08:59
Sashcono no...it's not that I can't copy it. I just don't know what command to type to produce an error report....09:00
Sashcoso that I can post it in the pastebin09:00
GIMMELoh.. well I don't either, sorry09:00
GIMMELwait for someone else to reply09:00
GIMMELyou'll get your help :)09:00
Sashcoalright hehe09:01
GIMMELInoki, could you help Sashco out?09:01
GIMMELAnyone really09:02
Sashcodo you happen to know how to purge the entire system and reinstall it again?09:02
GIMMELi'd make a rescue disk/bootable usb stick and nuke the system myself09:04
GIMMELthen start fresh09:04
SashcoThat's what I am trying now. Downloading  iso. Though everything is just going so extremely slowly after the crash. Even when I try to shut the system down, it just restarts.09:05
GIMMELtinyxp is good09:06
GIMMELhttp://www.hirensbootcd.org/ people say this is the best09:06
SashcoThough I seem to have a problem with my usb ports. They don't seem to be able to read the usb stick :-/09:06
GIMMELit has Everything, but it quite large09:07
GIMMELit is*09:07
GIMMELdid you try the usb stick on a different machine and or port09:07
Sashcono, but the ports were working yesterday.09:08
GIMMELcould be a temporary i/o glitch09:08
SashcoNow I just get an error rerport. "Couldn't mount device"09:08
GIMMELhuh.09:08
Sashcokeeps loading and just disconnects.09:08
GIMMELdid you try rebooting?09:09
GIMMELi had that happen to me and that fixed it, exact same message09:09
Sashcowhat bugs me even more is that I can't run the packet manager at all. It just won't run. Nothing happens.09:09
GIMMELdid you try sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop in the command line09:10
elfySashco: once you've managed to download the iso - boot into recovery mode, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecoveryMode09:10
GIMMELor that!09:10
SashcoIf you mean rebooting the system than it doesn't help at all. It just starts off with snail speed, I get two error msg windows(about some programs that do not work). And that is pretty much it.09:10
Sashcoelfy: thanks, will try that09:11
GIMMELoh :(09:11
elfythen you'll get a small window with a few options - one of which is fsck - do that09:11
SashcoGimmel: tried installing from terminal as you imply, but nothing happened.09:11
GIMMELi should probably stop trying to help people, ha09:11
Sashcojust told me that there are no new things to install.09:11
elfylet it check then try rebooting09:11
SashcoGIMMEL, :-)09:11
SashcoI appreciate your help!09:11
GIMMELi try, thanks09:12
Sashcoelfy: Is there a program on xubuntu that mounts the isos automatically09:12
Sashco?09:12
SashcoOr will the system itself detect this iso at startup?09:12
elfyas far as the USB goes - there are numerous thunar bugs with usb not mounting09:12
elfySashco: no - you will need to burn it to something09:12
elfySashco: just do the recovery mode fsck first09:13
Sashcookey. But, if the usb should start working, than I can run the reboot from the usb stick?09:13
GIMMELi'd use this http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ made bootable on another machine09:13
GIMMELit's amazing. it let me make my xubuntu iso bootable09:14
SashcoI seem only to find for usb booting for Windows09:15
GIMMELsoftware for windows?09:15
Sashcothis is the error I get when I mount my usb: "Failed to mount : Volume" - Not authorized to perform operation"09:16
GIMMELthere is knoppix if you want a linux rescue disk09:16
SashcoGIMMEL, how can I make my iso bootable at hirens?09:17
GIMMELit includes tons of apps for just about anything09:18
Sashcoaha09:18
GIMMELi dont remember the name09:18
GIMMELbut they're sorted so it's easy to find09:18
elfyGIMMEL: exactly what help do you think hirens will give ?09:18
GIMMELit has internet access and worked for me09:18
GIMMELwhat do you think would be best elfy09:19
GIMMEL?09:19
SashcoWell guys, I'll see what happens when the iso is downloaded. I will try another usb stick...maybe this got broken overnight. Who knows.09:20
elfyto run fsck for a start - then I would boot with a live session - install the disks program - check the smart data for the drives09:20
GIMMELall right09:21
GIMMELlisten to him Sashco !09:22
SashcoWhat is fsck?09:24
elfy!fsck09:24
ubottufsck is the FileSystem ChecKer, which runs automatically when you boot if you didn't shutdown cleanly. Type "man fsck" for information on running it manually. The command "sudo touch /forcefsck && sudo shutdown -r now" will force a reboot and a filesystem check; "sudo touch /fastboot" will skip a filesystem check at next reboot09:24
SashcoAh! thx! I def. need a system check. Since I know there is something wrong!09:26
Sashcothx!09:26
elfyyou can use one of those commands to run it without recovery mode ^^09:31
elfysudo touch /forcefsck && sudo shutdown -r now09:31
SashcoI am purging some programs now just to make sure they are not creating the conflict somewhere in the system. Once that is finished I will perform the fsck09:32
SashcoIt may well be something to do with me isntalling pipelight yesterday aswell. So getting rid of that for now.09:33
elfyI thought you said that package manager wasn't working?09:34
Sashcoyeah09:34
Sashcoin terminal it works, for some reason.09:34
SashcoCan't run it from desktop09:34
Sashconothing happens09:34
elfyok - so it is just ubuntu software centre giving issues?09:34
SashcoAlright. reboot now to see whether this thing works now. the red "sign" on top of my desktop is now gone :-) lol. I'll be back here in a minute09:35
Sashcoyeah, seems like its just the softwhare centre that is malfunctioning.09:36
Sashcooh crap...well, I no longer have privilages to preform system updates through ubuntu software centre...09:37
Sashcowhich means something is wrong.09:37
elfylet's just worry about one thing at a time09:38
Sashcookey, I am rebooting. If there is no change now after the purge, I'll do the fsck. brb09:39
CyborgCygnusI ran an fsck/grub upgrade before in recovery mode & it just hung with a flashing dash for likr 10 minutes.09:40
CyborgCygnuslike*09:40
Sashconah, didn't work.09:42
Sashcostill can't shut the system down. It doesn't even reboot. It just kind of logs off and restarts from there...09:43
Sashcowhat was that cmd again, for fsck09:43
Sashcoin terminal09:43
CyborgCygnusCtrl+Alt+Delete09:43
CyborgCygnusYou tried booting into recovery mode a the grub boot?09:45
CyborgCygnusat*09:45
elfySashco: sudo touch /forcefsck && sudo shutdown -r now09:46
SashcoNope, nothing yet. Just waiting for elfy to post the cmd09:46
Sashcothere it is :-)09:46
G1MMELHahaha someone regged my usual nick09:58
G1MMELClever, forgot you could do that09:59
Sashcowell...I ran a System Recovery(f11), and the system seems to be operating quite smoothly compared to prior. But still I don't have permission for mounting usb sticks(tried 3 different) and I still get 2 windows that pop up saying that "System program problem"10:03
Sashcowhich renders me unable to run a complete reboot from the usb stick. Only hope now is to burn a cd with the iso on another comp and mount it here.10:04
elfySashco: ok - let's look at the system program problem - what actaully happens when you let it report it10:04
Sashconothing at all. I think I've reported it several times already.10:08
SashcoAfter that, nothing. The window just closes. There are always 2 identical window popups.10:09
SashcoAt the start up, after I've typed in my password and the system is starting up from black screen, those two popup windows with System problem show up first. But, for the first few seconds they show up in low resolution. Like the safety mode you run in windows(16 bit color)10:11
Sashcothat is why I was curios if there is a way to produce some sort of report in the terminal.10:12
SashcoSome sort of a command that I type in and the system performs a check and than shows what is wrong...10:13
elfySashco: hang on and I'll be back shortly10:13
Sashcosure, np10:13
elfyls /var/crash/10:14
elfydoes that show a list of files with .crash10:15
=== haos_ is now known as haos
Sashcogive me sec10:21

elfysudo rm /var/crash/*10:22
elfyplease copy and paste that - don't type it and get it wrong10:22
Sashcoit is done correctly :-)10:22
Sashcobut nothing happened.10:22
SashcoI just typed in my pw and that was it10:23
elfyyep - if it returns to the prompt it has done as you asked without error10:23
Sashcothoug when I run ls /var/crash/ now, the list is empty10:23
Sashcoalright10:24
Sashcoshould I do a reboot now?10:24
elfyyep - should be - you rm'd them :)10:24
Sashcoto see if the error msgs still appear?10:24
elfyno - that removed the old crash reports10:24
Sashcoaha10:24
elfyif you get them again then you need to try report and see what happens10:25
Sashcostill can't run package manager from my scroll window :-(10:25
elfyok - now plug in a usb stick please and then run this command10:25
elfylsusb | pastebinit10:26
elfygive us the url10:26
SashcoI'll do a reboot now and see if they pop up, and what happens when I press report.10:26
elfyif you want10:26
Sashcowait..I'll do that first with the usb stick10:26
Sashcosee if it works10:26
Sashcocan't mount. "Not authoraized to perform operation".10:27
Sashcoweird10:27
Sashconone of the ports10:27
elfyand what url did the command give you10:28
Sashcogive me a sec10:28
Sashcohttp://paste.ubuntu.com/7161945/10:28
elfyI think that the cd12:ef18 is the stick, not sure10:29
elfysomeone else can help you with that - I'm running down on time10:29
elfylet's have a quick look at the software centre issue - run this in a terminal10:30
elfysoftware-center10:30
elfylet it try and open, then when it doesn't Ctrl+C in terminal10:30
elfythen copy and paste all of the terminal output to paste.ubuntu.com - sort the paste out then give us the url10:31
Sashcoit won't stop hehe10:31

andryyes, it does10:38
Sashcoandry: should I type in the cmd in the terminal?10:38
andryyes10:38
andrymaybe you need to sudo, because it does not belong to you10:38
Sashcowhen I used without sudo, I get permission denied. When I add sudo to it I get no such file or directory10:41
andrySashco, chown -R `id -u`:`id -g` /home/sasha/.cache/dconf/user10:41
andrywith sudo10:41

Sashcoin both cases it says: cannot access that given cmd10:42

andry(it wants to create user, sorry)10:42
Sashconothing....10:43
andryyes, thats fine10:43
Sashcothis is weird...last night it worked fine. And than the system all froze up. After the manual shutdown, everything got messed up.10:44
andrycan you try to access software-center again?10:44
Sashcoyeah, worked10:44
Sashcomake a new paste in ubuntu pastebin?10:45

SashcoI'll do a reboot again, see if my usb is working or whether I still get a system error msg after login10:49
Sashco_same error msg. Sent the report. And aslo, I cannot shut down my system. Whenever I try it doesn't even reboot. It kind of just logs off and starts from login again.10:52
Sashco_the only way to shut it down is manually.10:53

deltwhat was the file for the global PATH environment variable again?12:33
delt(setting up new ubuntu studio box)12:33
delti added it to /etc/environment but it doesn't work :/12:34
TheSheepdelt: you need to start a new terminal window for it to take effect12:35
TheSheepdelt: you can also add it to ~/.bashrc12:36
TheSheepor ~/.bash_profile12:36
deltTheSheep: i did12:36
TheSheepthen you did something wrong12:36
deltTheSheep: yeah but the problem with ~/.bash* is that it would only affect terminal windows, and not for ex. the alt+f2 box for running commands12:36
deltah, got it...had to reboot12:41
MalMenhello, i ha here with one big problem12:53
MalMenmalmen@mining:~$ sudo su12:53
MalMen[sudo] password for root:12:53
MalMensudo is asking me password for root12:53
MalMeni never defined any password for root :X12:53
cfhowlett!root|MalMen,12:54
ubottuMalMen,: Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo12:54
MalMencfhowlett i know there is no root password12:54
MalMenbut sudo is askting me password for root insted of my own password12:54
MalMendont you see ?12:55
MalMen[sudo] password for root:12:55
MalMeni am executing sudo withh my own user12:55
Juv1228MalMen, sudo asking for a password and root having a password have nothing to do with eachother12:56
Juv1228sudo will require your own users password and that you be allowed to use sudo by /etc/sudoers12:56
Juv1228su root would ask for the root password (and probably not work without a password on root)12:56
cfhowlettJuv1228, good explanation - thanks!12:56
MalMeni know that12:57
Juv1228MalMen, http://www.ducea.com/2006/06/18/linux-tips-password-usage-in-sudo-passwd-nopasswd/12:57
Juv1228I highly suggest you do NOT allow sudo without a password in general12:58
Juv1228there are some circumstances where it is useful, but a blanket 'allow all' is a good way to get rooted12:58
Juv1228oh, MalMen malmen@mining:~$ sudo su12:59
Juv1228sorry, I didn't see your initial question12:59
MalMenahhh, so you see it now12:59
Juv1228sudo -i is what you want12:59
Juv1228not sudo su root12:59
MalMensudo -i is asking me the password for root the same way13:00
Juv1228hmm, how did you disable the root password?13:00
MalMeni never seted root password13:00
MalMen*ubuntu dont usualy need that13:00
Juv1228cat /etc/passwd | grep root13:00
cfhowlettMalMen, paste your output13:00
Juv1228root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash13:01
Juv1228the output should look like that13:01
MalMenroot:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash13:01
Juv1228ok, also check /etc/shadow in the same way13:01
Juv1228you will have to use sudo13:01
Juv1228root:!:16053:0:99999:7:::13:02
Juv1228the second field is the important bit13:02
Juv1228!13:02
Juv1228in place of a password hash, which means no password will ever work13:02
Juv1228however, I am unsure why sudo su root would ask you for a root password13:02
MalMenhow can i check /etc/shadow if sudo dont allow me? :X13:02
MalMeni cant use sudo remember ?13:03
Juv1228you can't use sudo at all?13:03
Juv1228I thought only sudo su root didn't work13:03
MalMenno sudo at all13:03
Juv1228show me the output of id13:03
MalMenwhat id ?13:03
Juv1228run the command 'id'13:03
MalMenah, sorry13:03
MalMenuid=1000(malmen) gid=1000(malmen) grupos=1000(malmen),4(adm),24(cdrom),27(sudo),30(dip),46(plugdev),107(lpadmin),124(sambashare)13:03
Juv1228the only thing I can think of is having the 'rootpw' option enabled in /etc/sudoers13:05
Juv1228which you can only check as root13:05
MalMeni dont have any idea with this is happening, i never saw anything like this13:05
MalMensudo asking for a password of another user13:05
Juv1228If you are completely locked out of root on the system, boot a livecd and check the file /etc/sudoers on your HDD for anything like this13:06
Juv1228Defaults rootpw13:06
Juv1228or any line with the text 'rootpw'13:06
MalMen:|13:06
Juv1228sudoers has an option named 'rootpw' which requires the root password instead of each users password, but I have no clue how it would have been enabled13:07
Juv1228it is definitely not the default13:07
MalMeni was using sudo a few hours ago13:07
MalMenand everything work sooth13:08
cfhowlettMalMen, could be you changed something.  check your bash history13:08
Juv1228what did you do between then and now13:08
MalMenthere is any graphic sudo ?13:08
Juv1228some programs will ask for your password in a graphical manor, yes13:09
Juv1228the xubuntu package updater for example13:09
cfhowlettMalMen, gksudo13:09
MalMenwill try some of that13:09
MalMengksudo cool13:09
Juv1228but this works in the same way, using the sudo daemon13:09
Juv1228daemon is probably a bad term for sudo actually13:09
Juv1228but for whatever reason it has an /etc/init.d/ script13:10
elfygksudo is not installed by default anymore13:10
MalMeni am using xubuntu 12.1013:10
MalMenis instaled13:11
MalMenand its not working13:11
elfysudo -i is not asking for root password - it just wants your password13:11
elfybut as cfhowlett says - check bash history if it was working earlier13:11
Juv1228MalMen, elfy has a good point, show us the output of sudo -i13:11
Juv1228elfy, for sudo su root it was asking for root password13:12
MalMenmalmen@mining:~$ sudo -i13:12
MalMen[sudo] password for root:13:12
Juv1228but I really don't see why it would ask with sudo -i unless he or another admin changed /etc/sudoers13:12
MalMenlol13:13
Juv1228MalMen, do other people have root/sudo access on this box?13:13
MalMeninstaling one package by software manager13:13
MalMenit asked my password13:13
MalMeni put my password and bam13:13
MalMenin progress13:13
MalMenomg13:19
MalMencan add users by gui13:19

rydenhello, ive a question13:41
deltinstalling this kernel..... ---> linux-image-3.13.0-19-lowlatency13:41
rydenwhich is the last xfce stable version?13:42
cfhowlettryden, 3.2.0-60-lowlatency13:42
cfhowlettryden, well, at least on 12.04.4 ...13:42
rydenxfce 4.12?13:42
rydenno xubuntu version13:42
rydenxfce13:43
cfhowlettryden, ubuntustudio IS xubuntu13:43
rydenxfce.org the las update is about 201213:43
cfhowlettryden, xfce413:44
holsteindelt: id have to have the hardware in front of me.. if i were going back, id go back to 12.04, since it is supported longer than 13.1013:45
rydendo you know something about its developement?13:45
rydenxfce4.?13:47
cfhowlettryden, see xfce.org for details13:48
holsteinryden: http://www.xfce.org/13:48
holsteinryden: xubuntu uses xfce13:48
rydenthat site is not updated anymore13:48
rydenapril 28 2011213:49
ryden201213:49
holsteinryden: let them know you would like to help them maintain the information there, if you are intertested13:49
holsteinryden: that *is* the xfce site... xubuntu uses xfce13:49
rydeni know it13:49
cfhowletthttps://wiki.xfce.org/13:49
rydenholstein13:49
rydenmy question is why the xfce site is not updated anymore13:50
rydenjust that13:50
cfhowlettryden, contact the team - the wiki site lists them13:50
holsteinyeah, https://wiki.xfce.org/#release_information looks like you can get all the information you need13:50
holsteinryden: ask them.. xubuntu just uses XFCE.. could be they dont have the help to maintain it.. or, maybe they are not using it anymore13:50
rydenthankss13:51
deltholstein: seems to be a kernel issue... just booted in 3.13.0-19-lowlatency and now there's the same error but at least it recognizes the brand (m-audio)13:51
deltholstein: apt-cache search lowlatency is not showing earlier kernel versions... how do i install the same one that's in 13.10?13:51
holsteindelt: i wouldnt.. but, you can get a .deb for it13:52
holsteindelt: i would just test with, and try the generic one13:52
holsteindelt: try and get the hardware working, and the OS booting, then go from there with latency configuration as needed13:52
deltholstein: this package? linux-generic-lts-saucy13:53
holsteindelt: i would be using live CD's at this point.. i would be using xubuntu live CD's to see that the OS is working on my hardware13:54
holsteindelt: that would be using the generic kernel13:54
deltholstein: i booted the machine off the 13.10 usb stick and the keyboard is working fine13:54
holsteindelt: what "keyboard", though.. an audio keyboard that has guaranteed no linux support?13:55
deltholstein: except i installed 14.04 b1 and the kernel is giving me errors when i plug in / turn on the keyboard13:55
holsteindelt: usually, they just work. and as i stated, i would get the OS booting and running stable *then* address other issues13:55
holsteinif i were going back, i would run 12.04, not 13.1013:56
deltdo you recommend keeping 14.04b for now? i really don't feel like reinstalling...13:56
delteverything else seems to work fine.13:56
deltalso what features would be missing in 12.04 compared to 13.x or 14.x?13:57
holsteindelt: the features missing from 13.x compared to 12.04 is support13:57
deltholstein: still not working with the generic kernel :/14:07
holsteindelt: sure.. is it something that promises no linux support?14:08
holsteindelt: i would get the OS working, and go from there.. if it did work, then, you can typically easily make it work14:09
holsteindelt: could be that a module is not installed, or support has been removed.. or anything, really14:09
deltwell, the OS is working14:09
deltyeah, i have a feeling it's something ridiculously simple like that....14:09
delthmm.... midisport-firmware - Firmware loader for M-Audio's MidiSport devices14:10
holsteinright.. i need that for a few things i have laying around..14:10
deltnope... no go :/14:11
holsteindelt: sure.. and it may *never* go again. since they havent promised you to support linux14:11
delt*sigh* ok... so you recommend i install 12.04?14:12
holsteindelt: but, i really dont think it will be a big deal.. i would keep it simple, and start ffrom the beginning.. is the hardware functioning properly? which could be tested from a live CD, or another box.. is it showing in lsusb.. etc14:12
deltholstein: yes, i tested from the live cd and the hardware is working perfectly.14:13
holsteindelt: i dont let usb devices that dont support linux dictate what operating system i load. but, thats a personal decision i made14:13
deltand on the laptop, works perfectly as well.14:13
holsteindelt: what i said was, going back, i would choose 12.04 instead of 13.10, due to the support length14:13
deltah ok.. i would personally prefer to keep 14 beta14:13
holsteindelt: i think i asked before.. but, what keyboard?14:14

ash_mCan anyone walk me through a reinstall? I always end up with a GRUB error when I try to do it alone.18:38
cfhowlettash_m, have your verified your ISO?18:39
ash_mI got diconnected18:44
elfycfhowlett: iirc this is about installs to usb and grub ending up in the wrong place18:44
Shirt_Hi, Im looking to make a startup script for xubuntu that asks some basic questions like server IP username and pass, then insert it into a web browser can someone point me in the right direction of where to start?18:45
holsteindelt: that would support a hardware problem, and not a kernel issue.. though, i would power the unit off, and unplug the power in between tests18:46
holsteindelt: and, i see you are trying to address it with bios settings.. .sounds like a good idea.. good lucj18:47

Sashcoare you here?19:18
Artemis3serge, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype19:18
sergeспасибо, сейчас попробую.19:18
sergeпонял, большое спасибо.19:19
knomeserge, english only please.19:19
sergeok.19:19
Sashcowell, I was here ealier trying to figure out what is wrong with my xubuntu. Obviously there is quite a bit wrong. So, how do I format my entire system??19:21
knomeSashco, you'll have that option when you install xubuntu19:21
Artemis3redo the install and at some point choose the option to use entire disk19:21
knomeSashco, but take backups if you need to save any information19:21
SashcoI have dl and burnt an iso of xubuntu 13.10 BUT, I do not have permission to mount the cd. In fact, I can't do anything. Even when I restart my computer with the cd in, press Esc, I still don't get any options to do anything.19:21
elfyArtemis3: that's ok if they only have one install on it19:22
Artemis3don't they all? ;) i'll leave the complex don't kill windows partitions to others :319:22
SashcoI am like this cloes |--| to putting this thing out of its misery...19:22
Sashcoclose*19:22
Sashcoelfy: I actually found out that I no longer have sound. It just doesn't work anymore. And along with having no permission to my usb ports, I also don't have permission to run a cd from the tray.19:23
Artemis3Sashco, you should be able to boot from the iso and see the logo press key to show menu19:24
Artemis3Sashco, you do only want Xubuntu in there right?19:24
Sashcoso, when I run the force fsck cmd, and restart, even when I press Esc it goes straight to checking the disc and to the loginsection. Bypassing everything else.19:24
Sashcoyeah, I only have xubuntu here. So no need for anything else.19:25
Artemis3then, reinstall away :)19:25
elfyat a guess given that you had to chown this morning to get permission, I would think you did something to permissions prior to your issue19:25
elfySashco: ^^19:25
SashcoTo tell you the truth, I have no idea what is going on. I'll do another restart and see if I get an option w/o the iso cd in.19:26

xubuntu360thanks20:30
knomeyou're welcome20:30
xubuntu360 I have a problem with my wifi card, RTL8723, can you help me?20:31
xubuntu360thanks in advance20:33
wabblahi xubuntu360, what problem do you have?20:43
xubuntu360xubuntu is not recognized20:46
TausenOn xubuntu, I'm looking for a way to lock a modifier key. For example, if I have to press ctrl-n ctrl-n ctrl-p, I'd rather press ctrl-ctrl n n p or caps n n p. Any ideas?20:48
xubuntu360I tried several ways, lowering the driver, make, make install and modprobe rtl8723, and does not work, what's going?20:49
holsteinxubuntu360: i would want to confirm that the device is functioning properly, then, that the device is on or initialized.. both of which are independed of xubuntu support.. then, i would move on to support, if needed.. which, i usually do by trying other live CD's20:51
wabblatausen: i think that's called sticky keys. you can enabe it in xubuntu in settings -> accesibility -> keyboard20:56
Tausenwabbla: Thanks, I tried sticky keys and it is nearly what I want, but "lock sticky keys" doesn't seem to work. It seems like ticking "lock sticky keys" has no effect :/21:06
wabblatausen: i just ticked "sticky keys", no lock, and i can do, ctrl, c, ctrl, v, (one after another)  for copy paste21:10
Tausenwabble: Yeah, I get that behaviour too, but what I'm looking for is a way to sort of toggle control for more than just one key, so I could do for instance ctrl c v instead of ctrl-c ctrl-v21:11
TausenAnd I thought "lock sticky keys" could do that (or at least a bit like it)21:13
wabblatausen: i think i have the same, lock doesn't do anything.21:14
Tausenwabbla: alright, thanks - at least it is not just me then :P I wonder if I'm missing something21:16
wabblatausen: you could look if there's a bug report in launchpad, and make one if there's none21:17
wabblatausen: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/124566221:21
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1245662 in xorg-server (Ubuntu) "Sticky Keys not released after mouse action." [Low,Confirmed]21:21
Tausenwabble: Good find, thanks!21:27
wabblatausen: if you have a launchpad account, you can say it affects you and report your xubuntu version, so it gets more attention.21:28
Tausenwabbla: I'll do that :)21:29

ash_momg, one problem after the next. I tried to come in here earlier to get some help but my laptop wasn't working. Evenutally I tried to use a little tablet to connect to here, but the connection kept dropping, so I ended up having to fix my laptop to get help for my desktop.23:49
ash_mhah.23:49
ash_mcan anyone walk me through a xubuntu 13.10 reinstall? I am running it off of a Flash drive and everytime I do it by myself, I always get a GRUB rescue error23:50
ash_manyone?23:51
holsteinash_m: sure23:53
ash_mHooray!23:53
holsteinash_m: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair is what i use23:54
ash_mokay, so right now I'm live booting to my installer (which is also on a usb)23:54
ash_mthe way that I've been doing this (and failing) is using the live version to boot up; use gparted to clear the drive I want to install on; and then install to that drive23:54
holsteinok.. just install. not sure why you are not able to install grub, but some possible issues are.. bad hardware.. a bad image. .bad installation media.. etc23:54
holsteinash_m: clear the drive? to you have more than one drive? then?23:55
holsteinash_m: that can be the issue, if you are putting grub on the incorrrect drive, and the bios is trying to boot a different one23:55
holsteinash_m: regardless.. just install, get an install to complete.. and if you have an issue, you can use the guide i gave to repair grub from the live media you used to install23:56
ash_mholstein: I don't have an HDD, just usbs for this machine. I have 1 usb to install xubuntu and 1 usb to have xubuntu installed on. It seems to work fine when I have a fresh usb drive to install to; but when I try to reinstall I always seem to have problems23:56
holsteinash_m: so, you have *no* hard drives in the machine? correct?23:56
ash_mwell, what I'd really like to know is why I always have these problems in the first place. I read a lot of forums saying people accidentally installed it to the wrong place.23:57
ash_mholstein: correct23:57
holsteinash_m: the only drives you have are 2 usb sticks?23:57
ash_mholstein: correct again23:57
holsteinash_m: i have no idea why you are having a problem. nor am i sure you are having a problem23:57
holsteinash_m: i have done what you seem to be trying to do many times.. and im happy to try and help23:57
ash_mholstein:  I have succeeded in this feat many times as well, but ONLY with new usb sticks; after I install once, I'm ka-put23:58
holsteinash_m: you can "zero the usb stick" if you want, and start from scratch.. and use the tool i linked if you have issues with grub afterwards23:58
ash_msomeone gave me a cat command to do that23:58
holsteinash_m: ok.. i have not encountered that same issue. .so, feel free and do this23:58
ash_mis that any different from deleting the partitions using gparted?23:59
holsteinash_m: use gparted.. clear the drive.. reinstall.. test.. use the boot repair if boot is broken23:59
ash_mholstein: guess that's what I'll do...23:59
holsteinash_m: i do what is needed with the gparted tool.. if i need to delelt a partition, i do so. if i need to do more, i do23:59
